CLASSES, EVENTS, WORKSHOPS, AND SERVICES AT THE CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

DONNA COTE n DIRECTOR Before we all return to our fall routines, let’s take a quick look back at summer reading. Thousands of kids, teens, and adults joined our Summer Reading Clubs this year. Many of you posted pictures of where and what you were reading, tagged with #ireadeverywhere. We all enjoyed checking out the great titles and places where our library customers were reading this summer. Thanks for sharing!

This fall, you’ll find library staff out and about in the schools, introducing students and teachers to library resources. Look for the CRRL staff at back-to-school events in August and September. They’ll be promoting homework help from the library for students (see page 5 for details), along with curriculum help for teachers (see page 16). Even if you’re no longer enrolled in school, you can enjoy lifelong learning through the library. Check out pages 5–6 for suggestions.

You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. - C.S. Lewis 3

Fall 2015

October brings a focus on healthy living. Find out how to raise a happy, healthy eater with Dr. Yum at Salem Church. You can meet all three of the health providers pictured on our cover this fall. See page 20 for details on their classes about healthy eating, chair yoga, and age-related memory issues. Stop by the Porter Library for a Saturday afternoon filled with yoga, meditation, and vegetarian cooking tips. Our youngest library customers are invited to special Alphabet Soup classes with an emphasis on getting everyone up and moving while they enjoy some highenergy picture books. Find more health resources on pages 19–20. It’s not too early to start preparing for the holidays. Join us for Halloween events for kids and teens, a Veterans Day exhibit from the Museum of Valor, and Thanksgiving programs for all ages. Ready to try your hand at holiday crafting? Turn to pages 27–28 for a cornucopia of ideas and resources. As always, you can find something for everyone at the library. Browse through this issue of to find classes and events ranging from knitting to robotics to book groups. Whether you want to learn something new or you’re just looking for a good book, we look forward to seeing you At the Library this fall.

behind the scenes How did you get involved with libraries? As a child, I loved reading more than anything else. My father was a library trustee, so our tiny local library was my second home. I’ve wanted to be a librarian ever since Career Day in second grade, when I set up my own little library with stamps and checkout cards! What was your first library job? I started with a work study job in the Education Library at my university. I loved helping all kinds of people, from grad students to professors, to folks just visiting the campus. What do you like best about the work you do? I love that the public library has something for everyone, and that we are so nonpartisan, free, and open to helping all kinds of people ac-

complish great things. I love working with our teen volunteers, and most of all, helping teens find great books to read! What is one of the best-kept secrets in the library that you wish people knew? Our awesome teen events, such as The Cage! (see page 17 for details). We have up to 50 teens each month who make art, play video games, watch movies, and hang out. They are a great group of teens and welcoming to newcomers.

Christine Carlson Youth Services Librarian Salem Church Branch What are you reading/watching/ listening to now? I just finished Unfriended by Rachel Vail. I’m also reading bios from How They Choked: Failures, Flops, and Flaws of the Awfully Famous by Georgia Bragg. In the kitchen, I’m reading Salad Samurai by Terry Hope Romero and Rawsome Vegan Baking by Emily Von Euw.

When you’re not at the library, what do you like to do? Besides hiking with our kids, I try to make time to work out (I plan on running the Marine Corps Half next year) and prepare nutritious meals. I’m a foodie and vegan, so we have endless fun with food at our house!

Commuter Corner Music is hot at the library! Our customers have checked out an increasing number of music CDs recently, the most popular being the tried and true. If you’re in a nostalgic mood like many of your fellow road warriors, you may want to chill during your commute with some of these favorites:

Louis Armstrong’s All Time Greatest Hits

Bette Midler It’s the Girls

Elvis Presley The Million Dollar Quartet

David Bowie Best of Bowie

All summer long, school librarians from 14 area schools meet with public library teen specialists to read and discuss recently published teen books. They join forces to create a list of books that 7th and 8th grade students will enjoy, but will also elicit the best discussion. Our tremendously successful Café Book program would not be possible without their hard work and willingness to give part of their summer for their students. Here are two of these dedicated teachers:

Partners in Health The library works with area health, fitness, and medical professionals to promote wellness.

Dr. Nimali Fernando aka Dr. Yum Pediatrician, founder of The Doctor Yum Project doctororyum.org We hope to lower the rates of diet-related illness in children and their families with nutrition education and cooking instruction. We offer family-tested recipes, cooking classes for kids and families in our teaching kitchen and garden, and preschool nutrition curriculum that is being implemented in 16 area preschools. We partner with the library’s summer reading program for children and area Farmers’ Markets to reward kids for reading with fresh fruits and vegetables. This is a great way to introduce kids to the wonderful and healthy produce growing right in our region. At the Doctor Yum Project we like to show the importance of getting back into the kitchen as a family. The family dinner starts with preparing a meal, and those moments can be so valuable. The time you invest in preparing meals teaches your kids that what goes into your body is important. Meals don’t need to be fussy or complicated. The most healthy meals are made simply with fresh local produce from our area markets.

I am a geriatric physician working for Comfort Keepers. I recently joined the local Board of the Alzheimer’s Association and volunteer monthly in the Moss Free Clinic. I have partnered with the library most recently by presenting a program to the community on memory loss. Primarily I utilize the library as a wonderful resource for literature both scientific and fictional. The library is a tremendous resource. I believe health awareness, exercise, and reasonable dietary habits can make a huge and favorable impact on your longevity and fitness as you age.

The Family Cooks by Laurie David with recipes by Kirstin Uhrenholdt, has one hundred plus healthy and easy to make recipes. More encouraging than preachy, they offer good information and tips on picky eaters, and ways to involve kids in cooking. Some of the recipes include “play with it,” suggestions for fine-tuning the recipes to your family’s taste or for what you have in your refrigerator. Beautiful, full page, color photographs make this book a pleasure to peruse. I hate to admit it, but when choosing a recipe I look at the number of ingredients; more than 10 and I’m unlikely to follow through. All of the recipes in Baking with Kids

by Camilla Perez and Lisa Flodin meet my criteria! Each recipe includes photos to illustrate a few of the steps, sometime for instructional purposes and sometimes to demonstrate which children can complete independently. A Williams-Sonoma cookbook, Holiday Cooking with Kids: Recipes for Kids Ages 9 to 13, includes recipes by Susan Manlin Katzman. Organized by season, Katzman makes it easy to choose recipes that will add something special no matter the time of year. One recipe enhances delicious fall apples with caramel and a variety of toppings that children will love to make and then eat! Turn leftover turkey into a sandwich melt with an easy to follow recipe for all ages. Some recipes are more complicated than others, but all look equally scrumptious.
