LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL n DIRECTOR

As fall breezes begin to blow and school bus pickups are once again a daily occurrence, don’t forget CRRL can help with your back to school needs for all ages. We offer not just books, but research expertise and excellent resources like Lynda.com, which allow you to earn certification on a variety of subjects, and Credo Online Reference which offers live homework help for students in grades 3-12. (pages 5-6, 18)

In September, we’re encouraging you to Focus on Your Health by partnering with local agencies to provide free screenings, demonstrations, and information for the whole family. Join us at the Community Health Fair at the Salem Church Branch on Saturday, September 23 from 12:00-4:00. (page 30) Of course, I always have a good book nearby, but in October I’ll (Re)Discover Reading by exploring new authors. Join me on Tuesday, October 10, 7:00–8:30 and Meet Bestselling Author Jamie Ford at Headquarters. I recently listened to Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and it’s one of my new favorites. He’ll discuss his work followed by a Q&A session and book signing. (page 10) On Thursday, October 19, families can visit their local branch and participate in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, the world’s largest shared reading experience. We’ll have activities and extra copies of this year’s title, Quackers by Liz Wong. So get your ducks in a row and join us in making this the biggest shared reading event ever! If a visit

to a branch isn’t possible, you can still enjoy the title online at librarypoint.org. (back cover) We’ll Remember in November those who have served our country. The Museum of Valor will honor WWI veterans with a special exhibit at our Headquarters Library, November 10–11. John Hennessy from the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park will be back for Hallowed Places to discuss how the nation’s view of these areas has evolved over time. (pages 31-32) We’re partnering with University of Mary Washington’s Great Lives to bring author Marc Tyler Nobleman to England Run on September 9. He will talk about the unknown stories behind the creation of comic book favorites Batman and Superman (page 9). From September 18– October 28 our Porter Branch will host Flora of Virginia, a special exhibit on loan from the Library of Virginia (page 7). This fall our England Run and Salem Church Branches will each host a Human Library, where participants can spend some time with members of our community who might offer a new perspective. (page 25)

Our MakerLab badging that allows customers who complete training to use our 3D printers independently has now expanded to three branches. (page 8) I look forward to seeing you in a branch or in the community this fall!
