LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL n DIRECTOR

Summer is a blissful time for enjoying some welldeserved R, R, and R (Relaxation, Recreation, and Reading.) Children, teens, and adults can join summer reading for great book recommendations, fun missions to earn virtual badges, and prizes! This year’s theme is Build a Better World, but you can read whatever you would like. Learn more on pages 5-6 and sign up starting June 1 at librarypoint.org/summer or at any library branch. The excitement continues throughout the summer, and we invite you to take the library with you as you Read Around the World. Check out eBooks, eAudios, and eMagazines from wherever you land this summer. See pages 9-10. In August, we’ll Explore New Worlds with special sun-filled classes culminating on August 21 with solar eclipse watch parties at many of our branches. For the complete list, see page 32. Today’s library also provides vital community services. Once again this summer, our Headquarters and Salem Church branches are partnering with Fredericksburg City Public Schools and the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank respectively to provide summer lunches to children under 18 on an almost daily basis. Our England Run Branch is partnering with The Heartwood Center to provide food bags for local children. See page 21 for details and complete schedule. Our mission is to build a better community by providing lifelong learning for all ages. Unfortunately, overdue fines can prohibit access to this invaluable resource for children and teens. Starting July 1, youth materials will no longer accrue overdue fines while fines for adult materials will have slight increases.

Summer 2017

We’re hosting a safety series with community partner TRIAD, a cooperative effort of law enforcement agencies, senior citizens, and community organizations who are interested in the welfare and safety of seniors. See page 28 for these events, designed for seniors but open to all. The library also provides unique cultural experiences. Our 32nd Annual Music on the Steps is fun for the whole family and happens every Monday evening at the Headquarters Library. In July and August, Porter will host Uniquely Stafford, a juried and judged show of original works inspired by the Stafford experience. The Headquarters Library is also the recipient of the Strong Men & Women in Virginia History Exhibition which honors seven African Americans for their contributions to the Commonwealth. Learn more about all of these exciting opportunities on pages 7-8. Pardon our dust! If you are a regular visitor to the Headquarters and Porter branches you may have noticed some moving and shaking. The Library’s administrative staff have moved from Headquarters, joining the team at the former Library Service Center. The best part about the move is that the Headquarters 3rd floor can become much needed public space. We’re planning to create quiet study rooms and to move the adult fiction collection upstairs, setting the 2nd floor aside for Youth Services only. Headquarters has a new Teen Space room for teens to lounge, go online, and play Xbox One games. Stafford County has also contracted for “bookstore” style shelving for the adult and teen collections at the Porter Branch which will allow for increased visibility and easier browsing for all. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

behind the scenes Travis Fox brings his experience as a corporate designer and multimedia specialist supporting the defense industry to CRRL’s fast-paced graphics production team. How did you get involved with library service? I never knew libraries had design departments and needed marketing, so I thought working for a library would be a nice change of pace from the design environment I had been used to. What has been a favorite or notable responsibility during your tenure so far? I love being part of the Graphics Team and knowing that we play a key role in getting publicity out to the community. What are your goals for the library’s future? I would love to see the library do even more for our community, specifically the youth and the elderly. Maybe we could have daycares in

branches, or active assistance for elderly customers. What do you like best about working for the library? The best part of working at the library are my co-workers. What is one of the best-kept secrets about the library that you wish people knew? I wish people knew about all of the services that the library provides for the community. We aren’t just books, movies, and a place to study. And I wish people knew how much time and effort goes into making a non-profit organization flow smoothly to provide for the community. When you’re not working, what do you like to do? I like to spend time with my family, write and compose music, and cook.

Travis Fox Graphic Designer What books are you reading, audiobooks are you listening to, or movies or series are you watching? Right now I’m listening to old vinyl. Anything between 1968 and 1981. Chick Corea, Todd Rundgren, Bob James, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), and Earl Klugh. That’s just my vinyl. It would take this whole magazine to list my CDs.

Commuter Corner The library’s summer reading theme of Build a Better World can be interpreted in many ways, as construction of beautiful buildings or sustainable gardens, as taking up the challenge to find creative solutions to social ills, or even as a more personal endeavor, such as strengthening relationships.

LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

Friends of the Library Book Sales Friends of the Library book sales are more than a fundraiser for a worthy cause. Volunteers faithfully sort and organize materials throughout the year preparing for on-going, monthly, and semi-annual sales at CRRL branches. Library booksales are social events for many and treasure troves of bargains for others. Customers line up waiting for the doors to open so that they can get the best deals. Strangers connect over books they love and recommend.

Some seek out certain categories like cookbooks, history, biography, self-help, religion, and kids books, DVDs and audiobooks. Pick up a collection of coffee table art books, leather bound classics, or Civil

War tomes. Christmas materials are included during the holiday months, but we also celebrate “Christmas in July” just for fun. Black History Month specialty items always go quickly, and many people pick up “Beach Reads” for vacation or poolside reading. It is common to have a selection of items signed by authors and brand new magazines priced to move. As a special event, Salem Church Branch hosted the Blast from the Past Book Sale, which included vintage books, vinyl records, VHS, cassettes, and other unusual items. With the 8-track deck playing and the turntable spinning, customers lingered to peruse the exceptional selection, soaked up the rhythm and blues, poured over old photographs, and hunted for goodies from yesteryear. Every Friends of the Library book sale is full of gems and the unexpected. Don’t miss out. Mark your calendars for the next FOL book sale near you!
