DONNA COTE n DIRECTOR One of the best parts of my job is getting feedback from our library customers. I’ve been stopped in the grocery store, at church, and out and about in town by people who want to tell me about a great experience they had at the library. It always warms my heart to hear how important the library is in our community. Of course, once in a while I hear about an experience that didn’t go so well. I truly appreciate these stories, too, since they offer us an opportunity to make things right.
We have a number of ways for you to communicate with us about your library experience. This winter, we initiated a Strategic Planning process, starting with a community survey. We were delighted that thousands of you responded. Your comments as well as the feedback from our focus groups and community forums are invaluable as we develop our plan. Visit librarypoint.org/strategicplan for updates, and look for a final report in late summer. On an ongoing basis, the CRRL surveys library customers twice a year, in October and April, to find out how you use the library, what you like, and what suggestions you might have for us. We also welcome your comments on Facebook and Twitter. These channels allow staff to respond quickly to your questions and suggestions. Finally, you can get in touch with us via the Contact Us link at the bottom of our website, send a comment through the library catalog, or text, chat or email us via our Ask A Librarian page.

So when you want to pass on a compliment or a questions, please take a moment tell us in person or online. We love to hear from you! This spring we are encouraging library customers to download eBooks, eAudio, and eMagazines from the library’s website, librarypoint.org. Need help with your new device, or just want a refresher? Bring in your eReader, phone or tablet and ask at the Research desk for tips on how to take advantage of the CRRL’s growing collection of digital reading. In April, we hope to see lots of you at CRRL-Con, the library’s celebration of superheroes, graphic novels, and more. Check out the lineup on page 5, and look for related classes and events throughout March and April.
Gardening is the focus for our May events, not least the vegetable gardens maintained at the Salem Church and Porter libraries. Find out more about the gardens, how the CRRL is supporting local food banks, and how you can take part on page 27. Until next time, Happy reading, listening and viewing!

getting to know the library How did you get involved with libraries? I grew up in Prince William County and went to the library with my dad who loved the library. As a customer in the mid-80s, I started taking my kids to the old North Stafford library where we attended storytime in the basement. What was your first library job? I started as a page at Porter. I could drop the kids off at school, go to work, then pick them up after school. I only planned on working for a year or two, then it turned out to be such a good fit, I stayed on! Next, I worked in Circulation, then in 1999 I became the Meeting Room Coordinator.
What do you like best about the work you do? The people! My co-workers/work family, volunteers and customers. I like to make people happy and if I can do something in a small way to make their day go better, I’m happy to do it. What would you like to tell the public about libraries that they may not know? Because the CRRL is a regional system, we share things, we make things available to everyone in the system. Sharing makes so much available and our couriers make it all happen by delivering to all the branches. Plus, we’re not the “old” library anymore. We make quiet spaces available but we’re more community oriented than in the old days. We want people to feel welcome.

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. One of the best audiobooks ever. Six novellas set in six different eras.
The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. You expect great characters from Dickens, and you get them here.
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Be prepared to pull off the road if you start laughing too hard.
Bossypants by Tina Fey. Memoir of the life, so far, of a self-deprecating comedian.

on the web Have you ever been frustrated trying to use a website from your smartphone that just doesn’t work on your device? We recently redesigned librarypoint.org to be usable by all sorts of mobile devices, from small smartphone screens to larger tablets, in addition to standard desktops. Now when you come to the site, images resize to be the right size for your device, and menus become dropdowns through which you can easily scroll to select your option.

How Does It Work? OneClickdigital OneClickdigital is Recorded Books’ digital audiobooks platform and offers more than 5,000 audio titles and adds 30 new titles each month. There is also a limited selection of classic eBook titles. How do I find titles? 1. Through the catalog at librarypoint.bibliocommons. com. Click on “Advanced Search” and then check the “Downloadable Audiobook” box. 2. By clicking on the OneClickdigital link in our mobile app under eBooks & eAudio. These results will just be audiobooks available to download now. 3. Our OneClickdigital site at librarypoint.org/ebooks.
How many can I check out? You can check out as many as 10 titles and keep them for up to two weeks. Are these titles always available? Some titles are only available for one checkout at a
time, while others are always available. To find the latter, click on “Advanced Search” at the top of the page, and change the DRM type to “Not Protected.”
How do I download an audiobook? 1. You can download right from your computer or your smartphone. This example depicts how to do it from your computer. 2. To create an account, go to librarypoint.org/ebooks and click on OneClickdigital. You will choose a username and enter basic personal information. 3. Find an available title and click the button that says “Checkout Now!” on its page. 4. Save the .ocdf file locally. Click on that - you will be prompted to install the OneClickdigital Media Manager. Follow the directions accordingly to install it. 5. Your file will begin downloading. You can play the title right from the Media Manager or transfer it to a plugged-in device by clicking on “Transfer.” What if I need help? • Start with your friendly librarian at your local branch. We are happy to walk you through setting up your accounts and loading titles to your device. • Watch tutorials in the OneClickdigital Help section. • Call OneClickdigital support toll-free at 877-77AUDIO or email support@oneclickdigital.com.

The Giving Tree by Jacob H., age 17 You could view the library as shelves upon shelves of dead trees—fossils of the past. But in reality, the library lives and grows beyond the small space between the covers of a book. Library resources help families start their own gardens, and fun activities at local farmers’ markets teach you important agricultural processes. These programs expand the library’s field into a flowering garden of community growth, nourishment, and renewal of knowledge. So I suppose it would be better to view the library as a giving tree, helping you grow not only crops but also relationships with the surrounding community and the wonderful earth beneath you.

Entries will be judged by Amanda Rutstein, Adjunct English Instructor at the University of Mary Washington. Winners are awarded cash prizes and invited to read their work. We would not be celebrating our 12th Annual Teen Poetry Contest if not for the help and guidance of Claudia Emerson, a Pulitzer prize winning professor at the University of Mary Washington who also served as Virginia’s poet laureate. She judged the Teen Poetry Contest and hosted the Teen Poetry Night from its inception, encouraging countless young poets and gently shaping the event as it grew to over 300 entries. Before each winning poem was read, Claudia shared what it was about that poem that moved her. Her goal was to empower the young poets and her comments showed the depth of thought and attention she had given to their works. Claudia’s talent as a poet was equaled by her generosity of spirit and passion for developing young poets. 1957-2014

The Films of Charlie Chaplin

How did you get involved with the library? I spoke at a career event for the Salem Church Branch in 2008 as part of a Youth After School Club. Since then, my sons and I have volunteered time to adorn the Teen Lounge of the England Run Branch with chalk murals and participated in other kid-based events. What do you find valuable about the library’s resources? As a painter, the library has been invaluable as a means of collecting source material for inspiration and reference. As a parent, our weekly routine to the England Run Branch allows my kids to explore the Maker Lab and select their reading for the week.

What is one thing about the library that people may not know? There’s a misconception that a library is a quiet and private place, but there’s a lot of simultaneous activity within the building - in fact the last time we were there for the teen after party, there was a live band playing, a nintendo Wii tournament and our live painting all at the same time! What is your favorite book/movie/music? I love reading about late 80’s hip-hop like in the 33 1/3 series. I’ve just read the making of the Beastie Boys’ 1989 album Paul’s Boutique and Public Enemy’s It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. Both books recommended by England Run staff!

Gardens Grow at the Library! Gardening education is one of many ways that the CRRL contributes to the health and welfare of the community, and what better way to educate than through hands-on gardens at the library! Collaboration has been key to the success of the library gardens. In 2012, the Porter Branch partnered with the North Stafford Rotary Club to establish a garden with the purpose of donating fresh vegetables to SERVE, the Stafford County Food Pantry. Eagle Scouts built the beds, the Rotary Club purchased plants at wholesale from The Corner Garden Center, and local Master Gardeners set the plants after adding mulch and soil donated by Stone and Mulch Center. The library offered classes and events on food, gardens and healthy living, and none was more popular than the garden grand opening with pints of earthworms. One young customer even took a worm home in her pocket! Over the past three growing seasons, volunteers have harvested and donated nearly 1,100 pounds of fresh vegetables to SERVE! In 2014, the Salem Church Branch teamed up with the Spotsylvania Education Foundation (SEF) and Grow For Your Neighbor (GFYN) to further the concept of organic
and pesticide free gardening, to help connect the community to their food sources, and to contribute fresh produce to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. GFYN is a new, regional program which is committed to improving community health through gardening and education. They provided 4’x4’ garden kits complete with soil and instructions for a nominal cost. Thanks to Roxbury Mills, Home Depot, Meadows Farms, Green Hand Nursery and Bonnie Plants, GFYN was also able to give away bedding plants with the kits. Gardeners in turn donated part of their bounty to the Food Bank. This growing season, their Food Bank donations of fresh produce totaled 8,500 pounds! FOR THE LATEST NEWS AND MORE INFORMATION, GO TO LIBRARYPOINT.ORG, FACEBOOK, OR TWITTER In the spring, Salem Church Branch offered a Square Foot Gardening workshop to demonstrate how easy it is to start a small but mighty garden plot. Three donated Grow For Your Neighbor garden kits were set up at the library and planted with seeds donated by community members and Johnny’s Selected Seeds. Those three beds produced over 160 pounds of vegetables, which were donated to the Food Bank. We have since expanded to seven beds, thanks to volunteers of all ages and library staff, who have planted, maintained, and harvested tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and more. Library gardens continue to grow through every season. Spearheaded by staff member Leslie Duvall, the Salem Church garden has double-stacked growing beds with box hoops and covers for cold weather crops such as carrots, turnips, collard greens, and broccoli. Future goals are to organically enhance the soil, increase the number of beds, set up an automatic watering system and erect a greenhouse. Currently the England Run Branch has a new, small garden bed, but there are big plans to partner with the Friends of the Library to raise vegetables for SERVE. Learn more and get involved!
