welcome

DONNA COTE n DIRECTOR We are pleased to announce that the CRRL has embarked on a strategic planning process that will help to guide the library into the future. What do you appreciate most about the library? What new services or resources would you like to see us provide? Tell us at librarypoint.org, where during the month of November you’ll find a short online survey that will help guide our work. Thanks for letting your voice be heard!

What does winter mean to you? Getting a jumpstart on holiday crafting? Planning to master your new electronics? Looking for a cozy read in front of the fire? Whatever your plans, the library can help. In December, we invite you to enjoy the many gifts of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library. Check out the blog on our website where we’ll be highlighting a dozen different library services. Some are well-known, like our free mobile app. Others may be new to you, like the Job Help Center at England Run, or the Books and Beer Group. Find more details on pages 9 and 10. January brings lots of library customers who received new electronics over the holidays and come into our libraries for help. Sign up for a free one-on-one Training on Demand session at any branch and bring your new e-Reader, phone, tablet or other device. Our friendly research staff will help you to download e-materials from your library and answer any other questions you might have.

Winter 2014

Also debuting in January is Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference. The CRRL is proud to be chosen as one of 13 libraries in the country to host this interactive exhibit for all ages. Learn how engineering provides solutions to better meet human needs and explores how engineers create new technologies to solve problems. Stop by the England Run branch between January 21 and March 15 to enjoy the exhibit, and stay tuned for news about a special guest who will open the exhibit. See pages 5-6 for details. If your family starts feeling a little stir-crazy as winter lingers on, take a look at all the ways the library can help your family thrive. You and your family can watch a movie, listen to an audiobook, read aloud or read alone. Come to a library class or event, whether an early literacy class for the youngest or an author talk or cooking demonstration for the grownups.

Be sure to stop by your closest branch on Take Your child to the Library Day on Saturday, February 7, to enjoy a child-friendly activity and win a prize. But if the weather outside is frightful, just use the library’s mobile app to download your reading or listening titles from home. See pages 9-12 for more ideas.

getting to know the library How did you get involved with libraries? My mom started taking me to the library at a very young age. I was thrilled to go up and down the stacks choosing a huge pile of books to take home. I always looked forward to our weekly visits to the library as a family so that I could return those books and leave with a fresh batch. This began my lifelong love of libraries. What was your first library job? In high school I was a page at the Oceanside Public Library in California working in the magazine room. I became a real whiz at loading the microfilm reader for customers. One huge bonus was that the library was located just 3 blocks from the ocean! I loved to walk down to the beach after work and watch the sun set.

What do you like best about the work you do? I love to connect kids and teens with books. Finding just the right book for someone is so satisfying because reading is an awesome way to let our imaginations soar. What would you like to tell the public about libraries that they may not know? Libraries are centers of lifelong learning for all ages. To support this effort the England Run Library has a MakerLab with a 3D printer, robot arms, paper rocket launcher and so much more (equipment provided by the CRRL and the University of Mary Washington, College of Education). Check the England Run Classes & Events online calendar for dates the lab is open.

Joy McIntire Youth Services Manager England Run Branch What are you reading/watching/ listening to now? I’m reading Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs, listening to The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights by Steve Sheinkin, and watching Call the Midwife and Mr. Selfridge (the library has all seasons of both shows on DVD).

Commuter Corner In this installment, we’re selling you on how taking the library on the way to work will help you keep your New Year’s resolutions. Savor these suggestions to set you on the path to a new improved you for 2015! Swipe through a health/fitness magazine on your mobile device: Eating Well, Kung Fu Tai Chi (practicing the moves in the commuter van is not advised), Natural Health, Prevention, Shape, Spirituality and Health, Weight Watchers, Yoga Journal, and more. Download freely from Zinio via librarypoint.org/ebooks. Swiping burns calories, too, right? Listen to an eAudiobook. More

health/fitness: Listening to an exciting audiobook may cause your heart to pump faster which, in turn, will cause you to burn more calories. So, insert earbuds and listen to Thinner This Year: A Diet and Exercise Program for Living Strong, Fit, and Sexy by Chris Crowley and Jennifer Sacheck, PhD. Download it from OneClickdigital via librarypoint.org/ebooks. Pop in a CD and meditate. Everyone but the driver, that is. We like this audiobook to share with the entire commuter van pool: Real Happiness at Work: Meditations for Accomplishment, Achievement, and Peace by Sharon Salzberg. It promises to improve your work life “through mindful-

ness, compassion, and ingenuity.” It’s a hot title, so put it on hold now. Read a book on how to destress. Saving the best for last! We recommend these new books with real pages you can turn, burning even more calories in the process: 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-help that Actually Works: A True Story by Dan Harris. How to Sit by Thich Nhat Hanh The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload by Daniel J. Levitin

Imagine: it’s Fabulous Friday and one hundred small children crowd around ten even smaller baby chicks. One girl giggles when the bird’s wings tickle her fingers, and one boy quickly clutches to his mother’s side. As a Salem Church volunteer, I think I’ve discovered the true value of the library. It’s not just a quiet place with books; it’s a living museum, an interactive classroom, a breathing encyclopedia of experiences and human interactions. More than a building somewhere along the road, the library is knowledge you hold in your heart and mind your entire life. So love your library. Odds are it will love you back.

TEEN ART SHOW

Yuwei Chen, 2014

20th Annual

For the past 20 years, the CRRL has provided every student in our service area with a unique opportunity–the chance to exhibit their work as a professional artist. Teen artists in grades 9-12 submit their work for a month long display at the Headquarters Library. Students in grades 11 and 12 also develop critical evaluation skills by judging the work of younger participants. Almost every year, the older students’ work has been judged by the internationally renowned, local artist Johnny Johnson. When the art show began in 1994 it fit comfortably in the theater with a few pieces in the atrium. Now, the show consistently fills both of those spaces and a hallway. This is truly a system-wide event representing three counties and the city. For years a Westmoreland County art teacher’s father has dropped off student art on his way to selling produce at the Fredericksburg Farmers’ Market. It’s also not uncommon for library customers to express an interest in purchasing art or commissioning personal pieces from the teens. The library is proud to provide a forum for young artists to be recognized for their work. This year for the first time, The Teen Art Show will be a stop on Fredericksburg’s First Friday. If you are unable to visit during regular library hours, be sure to visit Friday, March 6, 6:00 - 9:00.

by Leslie C., mother of Karah, age 12, and Logan, age 10 Why do you come to the library? We have found so many things the library offers! This is our first year homeschooling and our kids attend classes in the library’s spacious meeting rooms twice per week. While they are in class, I take “quiet time” to work on my first novel in an out of the way nook. The library is a great space to just hang out and read, as our son Logan has discovered. He is obsessed with the egg chairs in the Teen Lounge and can read there for hours, curled up facing the window. Our daughter Karah enjoys checking books out every week. How do you expect to use the library in the future? I will be attending the Inklings Writers workshops and quite possibly the Books and Beer Club. The kids are excited to check out their first Mobile MakerLab and STEM classes. There are so many offerings of classes, events, and workshops available for anyone who is interested. This year we are happy to have been introduced to our local library. What do you think people would be surprised to know about the library? There are so many classes for personal help, help for small businesses, and events to bring the community together. Favorite book/movie/music? Logan is enjoying the Harry Potter series of books and is checking out the movies as well. Karah and I are reading The Hunger Games together, then we will watch the movie, too. We are a family of avid readers. I am excited to have the opportunity to check books out in so many formats! Right now, I’m reading a couple of books but my favorite is an audiobook checked out from OverDrive called The Forgetting Tree by Tatjana Soli.

by George Meadows, Professor of Education, University of Mary Washington How did you get involved with the library? I thought it would be good to have my Science Inquiry students gain practical experience working with small groups of children. I spoke with library staff during the Discover Earth travelling exhibit at England Run and came up with handson, interactive science activities we could offer library customers. The classes we’ve been able to offer in the MakerLab have been very popular. What do you find valuable about the library’s resources? I think the MakerLab provides an extremely valuable community resource. It exposes people to some of the newest advances in technology—things that you might be surprised to find in a library. Many students rarely get to see, much less gain experience using these kinds of tools. This really is the face of new technology and children need to be given the opportunity to experience it. What do you find valuable about the library’s partnership with you? It provides UMW students the opportunity to work with children and some really interesting hands-on materials. The fact that parents or older brothers and sisters are often involved as well adds a very different and valuable component to the teaching experience.

CLASSES, EVENTS, WORKSHOPS, AND SERVICES AT THE CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY

Friends of the Library For more Friends’ Book Sales, visit librarypoint.org/book_sales.

Our sorters share a few fun facts about what they did before volunteering with the Friends:

If your New Year’s resolutions include paring down your possessions, don’t forget the Friends of the Library. You can bring your surplus books (and CDs and DVDs) to any branch of the CRRL to be included in upcoming book sales. Clear out your bookshelves and support a good cause, all at the same time! Meet the dedicated folks who sort through all the donations to Headquarters. Each week they gather to open boxes and bags, looking for all kinds of treasures donated by our generous library customers. They sort the donations into categories - children’s books, travel, mysteries, and so on - and pack them into labeled boxes to be stored until the next big HQ book sale. Some special books are set aside for the Year-Round Book Sale at Headquarters, where on a recent day you could find everything from 10 Minute Feng Shui to mysteries by Nevada Barr and Harlan Coben, plus children’s classics like Goodnight Moon and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

• Joyce Bathke has worked with various Friends of the Library groups for over thirty years. • Rose Mary Muick is a former school librarian who grew up speaking Croatian at home. Passionate gardener Barbara Arlin used to manage a deli.

Gene Kubal worked as a librarian for the Army and the Pentagon in Germany, Korea and Panama.

Betty Stephens used to work at USA Today and loves to travel.

Avid gardener Diane Powell worked in libraries in Connecticut before moving to Virginia.

• Miriam Parsons, a sorter since 1973, used to be a piano teacher and church organist. • Jim and Christine Rauth are a husband and wife team who come in every Thursday morning from Lake of the Woods.

Enjoy the fruits of their labors at the upcoming Spring Book Sale at Headquarters, April 18-22. The Preview Party for Friends of the Library will be on April 17.

To join the Friends of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, bring this form to any branch or mail to: Friends of CRRL, P.O. Box 201, Fredericksburg, VA 22404. You can also join online at librarypoint.org/friends. Your membership will be sent to your local chapter.

We couldn’t do it without the Friends of the Library The Friends bring in thousands of dollars through the big semi-annual sales as well as the ongoing sales at each branch. These funds provide valuable programs and resources not covered by the library’s operating budget. In the last year, the Friends have supported: • Music on the Steps - free Monday night concerts at Headquarters • New computer carrels and chairs at the Snow and Cooper branches • Artwork at the England Run branch • Uniquely Spotsylvania and Uniquely Stafford art exhibits • New study chairs at the Porter branch In addition, the Friends help fund publication of the At Your Library magazine as well as the annual report published in the Free Lance-Star. They also support the Summer Reading Clubs, including purchase of books for children. Help the Friends continue to support the library! Join today, and be sure to shop at the library book sales.

Kindergarten Library Card Campaign A library card is every community member’s ticket to lifelong learning and what better way to start a school career than with one in hand? Each winter we partner with area schools to give each kindergarten student a library card application. Parents simply complete the form and return it to their child’s teacher; the library card is then mailed to the student’s home. In March or April, bring your child to the library, tell staff at the children’s desk that he is in kindergarten, and he’ll receive a free book!
