«Le Manoir d’Elles», a rustic inn on a farm
From the «Manoir de Bigeau», which combines a sheep farm producing organic cheese, a poultry farm and a rustic inn comes the Hostellerie du Manoir d’Elles in Saint-Romain and Saint-Clément, in northern Périgord. This small hotel with 7 rooms, including 2
suites which take their name from famous women, is composed of two restored old Périgord style buildings. The first, with a modern décor and design, seems to break free from the environment that surrounds it, unlike the old rustically decorated barn and authentic restaurant dining room, with the added charm of a beautiful large fireplace. In the kitchen, Catherine and Léopoldine prefer to use «organic», «homemade» products as well as local produce, to give their refined dishes traditional and inventive flavours. Located in one of the greenest corners of Périgord, in the heart of a private 60 hectare estate with woods, farmland and meadows farmed organically, this place will appeal to anyone who champions outstanding
environments. Surrounded by signposted footpaths, it is also a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. Thiviers and its foie gras museum are nearby, as well as the truffle museum in Sorges and even Brantôme Abbey and Villars caves. Languages spoken: FR/EN/ES (Castilian). Classified as a Historical Monument in 2005, this mountain fort was built (between 1840 and 1870) at Urdos, on a cliff, 765 meters high and it dominates the Aspe valley. Formerly charged with protecting the Somport Pass road against Spanish invasions, it owes its fame to the politicians who were interred there under the post-war Vichy regime. Nowadays it is open to the public, after having been subject to extensive safety work. The Aspe Valley Tourist Office organises sightseeing tours of the site by registration only, on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00, from 1 September to 31 October and at 14:00 from 1 November to 31 December.
Prices: €8 - Adults - €6 Children from 8 to 14 years - €23 per family (2 adults + 2 or 3 children) - Groups (+15 people) €7 per person. Children under 8 years are not allowed on the site.
