WELCOME Hello and welcome to the first ever print edition of Cruise Adviser. This issue focuses on ex-UK cruising and is your guide to the industry for 2015. River, luxury, family and expedition specials will follow next year
Cruise Adviser
— Ex-UK 2015
Cruise Adviser is aimed squarely at UK front line travel agents. The idea behind our publication is to keep you informed about the cruise industry – and to help you sell more cruises. There is no reason why cruise sales in the UK can’t be higher. While the UK market stands at around 1.7 million passengers, some analysts forecast the number as potentially being as high as 17 million (as we’ve outlined on p56). Given that over 70 per cent of cruises are sold through the trade, the potential earning power is huge. This is where Cruise Adviser can help. Our magazine is the only selling guide in the UK aimed at front line agents. This, the first edition, focuses on cruises departing from UK ports and includes features, analysis, a comprehensive list of sailings (p57) and a directory of major UK operators (p43). There is also a step-by-step ‘How to sell’ guide (p23), which offers examples of cruises to suit certain tastes and styles. This magazine is your guide to ex-UK cruising for all of 2015 and is intended to be kept for the whole year. Our specialist guides on river, family, luxury and expedition cruises will follow from February 2015. Keep an eye out for our monthly email challenges too. There will be some great prizes on offer to those travel agents that successfully use this guide to increase their cruise sales. We hope you enjoy reading. Kind regards,

––––– THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN –––––
INTERVIEW We speak to P&O and Royal Caribbean as they bring their newest toys to British shores
I
n March, P&O’s Britannia will sail its maiden voyage and become the biggest cruise ship built for the UK market. A month later, it will be joined by Royal Caribbean International’s (RCI) second Quantum-class vessel, Anthem of the Seas. Both ships undoubtedly represent a major boost to the travel industry – but what gives P&O and RCI the confidence that their new vessels will be a success in an area that many lines have traditionally struggled with? We asked Chris Edgington, marketing director for P&O, and Ben Bouldin, sales director for RCI, why they are confident of success. Chris Edgington, marketing director, P&O Cruises
Britannia will be home-ported in Southampton. Talk us through that decision Chris Edgington: We want to show Britannia as the newest version of P&O’s expertise and we believe Southampton is where she needs to call home. There is capacity in the marketplace and we know we can create an extraordinary holiday experience.
8
P&O’s Britannia and, right, RCI’s Anthem of the Seas
What gives you the impression there is capacity? Such a small percentage of the UK population regularly cruise yet it is fantastic value and an exciting holiday option. The facilities onboard modern cruise ships will help people realise that cruising isn’t just for the older generation. How strong would you say the UK cruise market is right now? The British cruise market is in fantastic shape. There are some wonderful ships coming to Southampton, which will bring in millions to the local economy. If you think of the celebrity chefs and the entertainment onboard, this is a strong time for cruising. How is P&O trying to attract the ‘new to cruise’ market? Dining is a big factor and we have the best offering using our five-food heroes: these guys are at the very epicentre of what is great about British food. Something else that we need to highlight to new
cruise passengers is that you can wake up in five, 10 or 15 different places, immerse yourself in those cultures and then get back onboard a ship which is fundamentally British at heart. What part does the trade play to P&O’s future strategy? They are the very lifeblood of what we do. It is impossible for me to go out and talk to the 450,000 passengers we have over the course of the year, but travel agents have that access across their network. These talented people do everything they can to bring our holidays to life on the high street. How do agents get onboard? We would welcome any agent who wants to work with us or improve their existing relationship with us. As a company, we are creating strong marketing materials that we will share with anyone interested. Contact a member of our team and we can arrange that for you.
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
Ben Bouldin, sales director, Royal Caribbean International
Why will Anthem of the Seas be sailing out of the UK? Ben Bouldin: When we look at our markets around the world, Southampton is one of our most strategically important. We believe the growth is here to support that new ship and we’re proving it by bringing a ship into Southampton that holds 500 passengers more than the ship it is replacing. How do you define your British market? From its marketing materials Royal Caribbean looks like it targets an adventure traveller.
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
That is a position I’m keen to change; it is not entirely who we are. The Quantumclass vessels will help us redefine our brand because they have something on [them] for everyone. The big family brands (Carnival, MSC, Norwegian) have all shied away from the UK in recent times. Why will Royal Caribbean succeed where they have failed? We believe in the product we have. I know we have a great product and I know we have great service and I know that the UK is where we need to be. We are prepared to go head-to-head with anyone who wants to support the market here. I would argue that we are restricting ourselves by just being seen as a family product. How are you going to get this message out to the trade? As we approach the launch of the ship we will be announcing
more about what’s going to be onboard. We have already had Dynamic Dining where we sent boxes of Jamie Oliver goodies out to trade partners and invited people to eat in his restaurants. We will run similar initiatives with the entertainment too. The launch of Quantum [of the Seas] was a great opportunity to get the trade on a similar product before the launch of its UKbased sister ship [Anthem]. How can agents get onboard and see for themselves? I buy into the idea that agents will need to experience the product properly to be able to sell it. When you sail on a ship it comes to life. We will be taking close to 80 agents out to the Caribbean. Agents need to complete our Cruising for Excellence program online and gain Captain status. So, the first step would be to speak to a local Royal Caribbean representative.

NORWAY
––––– JOURNEY TO THE NORWEGIAN FJORDS –––––
10
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
NORWAY Departing from the historic port of Tilbury in Essex, Sam Ballard sails on Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ Marco Polo to West Norway, taking in the likes of Fjaerland, Balestrand and Bergen. Here, he explains why the gentle journey north is as enchanting as the fjords themselves
I
n 2015, Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ flagship vessel, the Marco Polo, will celebrate its 50th anniversary. There is something undeniably comforting about this. In an era when cruise lines boast of their younger fleets, it’s refreshing to highlight such vintage. Given that the ship’s operator is at record capacity for next year’s sailings, it’s a strategy that is paying off. The ship, which holds a maximum of 800 passengers, sailed under the name Alexandr Pushkin in a previous life, servicing clientele from the USSR. It’s this connection with the so-called golden age of cruising that makes it so popular amongst cruise lovers today: you’ll often hear it said that the Marco Polo is a real ship. For our cruise, we sail north from London Tilbury to the Norwegian fjords. The voyage is heralded as an iconic sailing for a number of reasons, primarily because of the stunning scenery for which the fjords are renowned but also because passengers can do exactly what we’re doing and board the ship without leaving the UK. The lure of Norway – and northern Europe in general – has proved popular across the UK cruise market. According to statistics from CLIA UK and Ireland, cruises to the region will overtake the Mediterranean if the trend continues. Considering the history of the Mediterranean, and the ports that lie on its waters, that’s a startling statistic.
12
The voyage departs Tilbury in blazing sunshine and we toast the forthcoming journey with a cold beer out on deck. If there is a better feeling than this then I am yet to experience it. The eight-night itinerary will see the Marco Polo travel to distant sounding lands with names like Fjaerland and
Sitting precariously on the edge of Hardangerfjord, the views from the window are stunning: crashing waterfalls, dramatic gorges and deep valleys. Until relatively recently, these areas were only accessible by ship. While there are now roads connecting the small settlements dotted along the side of the

Balestrand. It sounds more like travelling back to the land of the Vikings than hopping across the North Sea. The feeling is helped by the whole day and night we spend on the ocean before arriving at our first destination. When we wake up we are in a scene taken straight from a film. Eidfjord is breathtaking. The colossal green landscape dwarfs everything in sight. Our ship looks like a child’s model in a giant bathtub. You can see why myths about trolls are prevalent in the area. We tender from the ship and set foot on Norwegian soil for the first time, taking in the sights – the towering hills, which provide a backdrop throughout West Norway, and the colourful, immaculately kept wooden houses that sit so prettily amongst the natural green. While there we visit the Fossli hotel, which was built over 100 years ago and is still run by the same family today.
”
fjords, the water is still the lifeblood of West Norway. The fjords are without crowded cities, stifling commutes and suffocating congestion: you can almost feel yourself growing healthier with every intake of Norwegian air. And it persists throughout our journey as the Marco Polo weaves delicately through the meandering fjords. We are treated to a steep mountain train ride in Flåm, our second stop, which is capped off with a visit to Aegir brewery where we meet Chris, the manager. He serves us a selection of the company’s award-winning beers that are so good we decide to stay behind for a couple. The prices are almost as steep as the mountain we’ve just scaled. We had been warned about the high prices, but had been sheltered by the prices onboard the Marco Polo. Of course, it’s another of the major selling points of a

he next day is truly special: the Bøyabreen glacier at Fjaerland. The area hosts one of only two glacier museums in the world. The frozen river of ice that looms over the mountain is a majestic sight, but the message is a stark one: if environmental concerns are not addressed, the glaciers will eventually melt completely. The scenery for our entire journey has been consistently spectacular. In just a few days we’ve taken in some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world, travelling hundreds of miles. It’s perhaps the key attraction of cruises: the Marco Polo has delivered us to these CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
most inaccessible Norwegian towns. We have checked into a hotel that has taken us to where we want to be. Olden is arguably the most stunning location on our whole itinerary. The Briksdal glacier is often cited as one of the most reachable plains of ice in the world. We take a tour of the surrounding national park in a golf buggy that whizzes past cascading waterfalls and dizzying drops. When we eventually reach a lagoon, the ice itself – an arm of Jostedalsbreen glacier – is just a few metres away. Unsurprisingly, the water itself is ice cold and we decline our guide’s invitation to take a swim. Bergen, our final stop in Norway, is the visit that we’ve been most looking forward to.
It’s the second biggest city in Norway, but is remarkably small with a population of 250,000 (given we’ve become used to tiny settlements on hillsides, it feels bigger than London). Cafés, record stores and trendy boutiques tell of a city that boasts Norwegian cool. It’s small enough to explore by foot, too, which is how we managed to get our bearings. A visit up the mountain is a must and takes just minutes with the funicular. And, with that, it’s time to head home. No expensive transfers or airport check-in queues – just another gorgeous day at sea, a good book and a cold beer. Not a bad way to end a holiday.

elebrity Cruises is constantly pushing the boundaries of the cruise experience with its unique take on modern luxury. So it should come as no surprise that the winner of Ocean Cruise Line of the Year at the 2014 Food and Travel Reader Awards is adding some fantastic new features to Celebrity Eclipse, its dedicated ex-UK ship, throughout April 2015. Celebrity Cruises has been voted as one of the Top 100 travel experiences for 2014 by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller and recognised in the Wine Spectator 2014 Restaurant Wine List Awards. And, now, wine bar Cellar Masters will enjoy a renaissance as Gastrobar – a brand-new concept onboard Celebrity Eclipse that will feature artisanal cocktails and over 40 boutique beers. The ship’s poolside area will be transformed into Slush, a frozen drinks bar, while the onboard casino will feature more

British-style slot machines as well as a revamped bar area. The Studio will specialise in fine art photography and give guests the chance to take home a unique memento of their time onboard Celebrity Eclipse. The line is set to introduce fleet-wide Suite Class features: guests staying in a suite will have access to an exclusive range of benefits including a suitesonly restaurant, VIP lounge and complementary premium drinks. All Celebrity Eclipse’s new features will be ready for customers to enjoy from May 2015 with itineraries that include sun-kissed coastal Spain and the wonders of the Norwegian fjords. Before that, there are trips to the Caribbean and Canary Islands. Agents, too, can join in with the fun. The cruise line has already put its 2016-2017 season on sale – four months earlier than in previous years – giving agents more time than ever before to maximise early booking opportunities with
the returning 123Go! offer. Bookings made between November 2014 and the end of February 2015 also allow agents to earn an additional bonus in the recently launched Celebrity Rewards loyalty programme. Agents can exchange their points for a host of gifts – including a Celebrity Cruises holiday – by registering at celebrityrewards.com. There will be initiatives and schemes launched throughout 2015 in a bid to maintain the great relationship it has with the trade. Nicki Tempest Mitchell, director of sales, UK and Ireland, said: “Our agent partners tell us that they need time ahead of the peak wave season to plan and understand what is on offer. We’re announcing our turn-of-year offer really early, and adding the excitement of sharing news on our new 2016-17 cruises.” For more information see p45 and celebritycruises.co.uk

ith a seemingly endless supply of theatre, food and live music, some cruise ships feel like floating cities. Even smaller vessels are like theme parks at sea. Whether you are looking for shows straight from Broadway, symphony orchestras or murder mystery parties, there are cruise lines to cater for your every entertainment need. What is truly remarkable is the diversity of what is on offer: here, the old cliché of ‘something for everyone’ rings true. We look at the best on offer on ex-UK cruises. Drinking A holiday is nothing without a good knees-up – and cruise lines, from Royal Caribbean to Cunard, know that. But how you go about enjoying the odd tipple differs dramatically
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
between operators. The former offers a futuristic experience while the latter prefers things a little more rustic. Onboard RCI’s innovative Quantum of the Seas are the Bionic Bar’s martinimaking robotic barmen. The bartenders, powered by Makr Shakr, and known as B1-0 and N1-C, can produce two laser-precision drinks per minute for a total of 1,000 drinks a day. On Cunard, by contrast, is the proper British pub, The Golden Lion, which offers quizzes, karaoke and live sports on its televisions – with human barstaff. On P&O’s newest ship, Britannia, it’s all about variety – the vessel boasts 13 bars to go with its 13 restaurants (see p20). Themed cruises In 2015, P&O Cruises is offering four dedicated Strictly Come Dancing-themed cruises – including a 14-night cruise to
Portugal, Gibraltar and Spain on Aurora and a 14-night cruise to the Canary Islands and Iberia on Britannia. Each cruise will have two pairs of the BBC programme’s professional dancers as well as a judge and special celebrity. Fred. Olsen’s unique Poison, Murder & Mystery cruise – which sails from Edinburgh on 10 July, 2015 – is one of the most inventive themed-cruises on the waves but, perhaps, it is the operator’s You Choose Your Cruise which steals the show. Guests on the Braemar voyage, departing from Southampton in October 2015, have the incredible opportunity to vote for the next port of call as the cruise progresses, with two choices each time. The same ship also offers a comedy cruise during the same month, once again departing from Southampton, where the satirical singing trio Fascinating Aida will headline. 17
ENTERTAINMENT Theatre Thespians at sea are more common than you may think. Cunard’s Royal Court, with the resident Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company, presents musical productions and abridged Shakespeare on its cruises, while P&O’s Britannia will feature a 936-seat theatre. Royal Caribbean, as the first cruise line to feature fully licensed, Tony Award-winning productions from Broadway, has announced plans to feature Ben Elton’s We Will Rock You onboard Anthem of the Seas when the ship sails from Southampton in April 2015. In addition to the show, built around 24 of Queen’s greatest hits, the cruise operator’s Broadway at Sea includes the likes of Mamma Mia! on Quantum of the Seas.
18
Live music As well as theatre, Cunard is known for its highbrow musical offerings, particularly through its partnership with the National Symphony Orchestra. The Midships Bar hosts music each evening from Queen Elizabeth’s resident pianist, while the string quartet accompanies afternoon tea and soundtracks the Royal Night Theme Balls. But musical cruises don’t have to be of the classical variety: in 2014, Cruise & Maritime Voyages offered a northern soul-themed cruise to celebrate 50 years of pirate radio, while Fred. Olsen has ’60s- and ’70s-themed cruises sailing in 2015. The cruise line’s threenight Balmoral cruise, which departs from Southampton in December 2015 and heads for
Antwerp, promises a chance to get on your dancing shoes. Art Culture need not be confined to art galleries on land. Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas boasts a fascinating art collection, including “interactive art created by the world’s best digital and video artists” within the theme of What Makes Life Worth Living. Oceania Cruises, meanwhile, is so proud of its artistic eye that it has released a book detailing the multi-million dollar collections available to view on its ships. The cruise line’s Artist Loft also offers hands-on lessons for budding painters.

DINING With celebrity chefs, themed cruises and a range of restaurants, the best options on the waves now rival the best on land. We look at dining in the ex-UK cruise market
T
he best holidays are not just about relaxing and unwinding but immersing yourself in different cultures. It’s why so many cruise lines are committed to serving food that is as innovative and exciting as it is diverse. For many passengers, the food served on ship is as alluring as the sights off it: the dining experience is as important as the itinerary. Whether through big-name chefs, fusion cooking or secret ingredients, there are some superb options on the waves. Here we look at the best cruise lines for food-lovers. The Brit pack P&O is not exaggerating when it says that its newest ship, Britannia (see our interview with marketing director Chris Edgington on p6), combines the excitement of cruising with the sophistication of a five-star hotel. And at the forefront of that is P&O’s commitment to food. The line’s ‘Food Heroes’ are gods of the culinary world – James Martin, Marco Pierre White, Atul Kochhar, Eric Lanlard and wine expert Olly Smith – and are represented everywhere on Britannia: from restaurants to bars, cookery schools and the market café (which will serve charcuterie, including smoked lamb and venison, from Britain’s best artisan producers, as well as delicate cakes and pastries).
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
As Chris Edgington puts it: “Traditionally people thought cruise ship food was all about quantity. On Britannia and on the rest of our fleet it is all about quality. “Our mantra at the moment is ‘think differently’ – particularly where it applies to the quality of food, variety, ingredients used and the expertise we have called upon to deliver this.” Among the ship’s 13 bars and 13 restaurants is the Epicurean restaurant, dedicated to fine dining, which will offer a contemporary menu of molecular cooking, home smoking – and even flaming jellies – as well as the chefsponsored cookery clubs. Which food legend accompanies you to faraway lands depends on the cruise and the ship. Master pâtissier Eric Lanlard and chef James Martin will travel with Britannia on its maiden cruise on 14 March, 2015 (Lanlard will be onboard for a number of cruises including Guernsey, Spain and France on 23 May and the Canary Islands on 25 September, while Martin will join for the Mediterranean on 13 June and the British Isles on 6 July, among others). Marco Pierre White, the three Michelin-star chef, will be travelling on Oceana on 22 March (to the Mediterranean), Ventura on 6 May (Iberia) and on Britannia on 30 May (Baltic), among others. For which chef is travelling where, see pocruises.com.
Royal cuisine The theory behind Dynamic Dining, Royal Caribbean’s innovative new culinary experience, is to let your appetite guide you. While everyone enjoys a formal night – they’re a huge part of what makes dining on cruise ships so exciting – a little flexibility can be nice. This means that on the cruise line’s groundbreaking ‘smart ships’, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas (see our interview with Royal Caribbean’s Ben Bouldin on p6), there are no required formal nights or set dinner times. At the centre of this is Royal Caribbean’s planning tool, which provides guests with full control of their dining experience before they even board ship. According to the cruise line, Dynamic Dining will “reinvent the traditional, common main dining room experience” by replacing it with five fullservice restaurants including its American Icon Grill, Silk (panAsian) and Coastal Kitchen (Mediterranean) eateries. It’s not simply flexibility that the operator offers, though, but variety and excellence: guests on Quantum and Anthem have, in total, 18 restaurant concepts to choose from. The next-level signature dining options on the two ships include the inventive Wonderland, Michael’s, an American-style gastropub, and Devinly Decadence at the
21
DINING Solarium Bistro, which serves Devin Alexander’s super healthy fare. Most excitingly, however, is Jamie Oliver’s inclusion. The award-winning chef, whose Jamie’s Italian restaurant will feature on board, says: “Royal Caribbean shares my approach to food and dining, which is to serve simple, fresh ingredients in a warm, inviting ambience.” Celebrity fare Celebrity Cruises, which took home the coveted ‘Ocean Cruise Line of the Year’ award at the Food and Travel Reader Awards in 2014, is dedicated to serving superb food on its luxury ships.
22
On top of its association with the Great British Chefs website – which counts over 100 chefs with 120 Michelin stars between them among its contributors – is its excellent onboard fare and food-themed cruises. On offer is wine-tasting in Tuscany – where guests learn about the art of winemaking and tour a local vineyard – and gelato sampling in Naples. Passengers on the latter will take a tour of Sorrento mapped out by Celebrity’s resident travel expert Ben Fogle. The cruise line also offers a tour of Sicily, which takes in a Catania fish market and includes a hands-on cooking lesson.
Class acts While Oceania Cruises does not offer as many ex-UK cruises as Royal Caribbean and P&O, their food is exemplary. The line says its onboard restaurants rival the best ashore – and it would be difficult to argue: the cruise line’s trophy cabinet is bursting with best-food awards. With specialist restaurants onboard each of its five ships, the operator’s delicious dishes include prime rib of beef (dry aged for at least 28 days), seabass marinated in miso, as well as fine Asian-fusion dishes in the Red Ginger restaurants, while its Culinary Centre classes offer a chance to get hands-on with the cooking.

W
elcome to our guide on how to sell cruises. Over the past year we have spoken to a number of people at cruise lines, travel agencies and industry bodies about why cruise sales aren’t higher than they currently are. There are a host of factors at play but, for a lot of agents, it all boils down to a perception that cruises are complicated and that it is often easier – and better value – to sell a land-based holiday instead. We are here to change that perception. In our opinion, there is no better way for your clients to spend their hard-earned holiday time. The retention rates speak for themselves, too. That is why we have compiled this guide, which is designed to walk you through some of the basic questions when faced with a potential cruise customer. We have included some sample cruises, too, and remember to check our 2015 port listings (p57) and directory (p43) for any extra information you may need.

These three voyages are for those who are prepared to think a little outside the box. Certainly not your typical sailing, this voyage has that little bit extra to make it something really worth talking about. Plus, with overnight stays in both Dublin and Reykjavik, it’s the cruise that keeps on giving.
Yes that’s right: a Strictly Come Dancing-themed cruise – and one that features famous faces from the BBC’s flagship ballroom programme too. Samba, rumba and waltz with your favourite stars – all onboard P&O’s beautiful Azura, on a cruise through the Baltic. Calls will include Bruges, Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Tallinn. This is certainly one to remember.
This summer sailing onboard All Leisure Group’s Minerva is something a little special. Titled ‘Grand Island Vistas’ the ship departs Portsmouth and heads south to Rome. s there anything better than lying on a sun lounger, basking in the warm and watching the world go by? We somehow think not and, we hope, that you agree too. For us, a sunny time is more often than not a good time. And a warm day at sea is worth a lot more than one frankly wasted anywhere else. Bearing that in mind, we have rounded up three cruises below that are sure to put a smile on your face – and give you a decent tan.
Line: Cruise & Maritime Voyages Departure port: Bristol Departure date: January 26, 2015 Destination: West Indies Duration: 30 nights Ship: Azores Price: £4,858
Line: Oceania Cruises Departure port: Southampton Departure date: September 8, 2015 Destination: Continental Coasts Duration: 14 days Ship: Nautica Price: £2,059
Line: Holland America Line Departure port: Harwich Departure date: May 4, 2015 Destination: Western Europe Duration: 12 days Ship: Ryndam Price: £998
This mega journey with Cruise & Maritime Voyages departs from the west coast of England and heads straight to the warm. After two calls in Portugal (Lisbon and Madeira) you will enjoy six lazy days at sea before arriving in the Caribbean for ten days of real sun. The voyage will finish in Bristol with the same return journey, this time with a stop off in the Azores. If you have the time then this is the ultimate way to relax.
This sailing with foodobsessed cruise line Oceania Cruises takes you right through some of Europe’s most romantic cities: from Bordeaux to Lisbon, Barcelona and Monte Carlo. The sailing will finish with calls in Florence and Rome. Not a bad way to spend time with your loved one. All in the lap of luxury on one of the industry’s most gastronomic galleons.
This 12-night roundtrip from Harwich is not just a great option for potential passengers who live on England’s east coast. It’s well worth travelling from further afield too. Calling in at Cherbourg, La Coruna, Porto and Gibraltar before turning back and stopping at Seville and Lisbon on the return journey, this is a cruise that takes guests through some of the greatest wine country in the world. It would be rude not to have a glass or two along the way.

here is no holiday better suited to a family than a cruise. The reason? The versatility and choice that is on offer. One parent is luxuriating in the spa, the other is propping up the bar, all while the children are in the kids’ club having the time of their lives. Take a look at some of the cruises we have put forward for those sun-seeking families in 2015.
Line: Royal Caribbean Departure port: Southampton Departure date: June 20, 2015 Destination: Mediterranean Duration: 14 nights Ship: Anthem of the Seas Price: Ocean view cabin from £6,432 for four guests
Line: Celebrity Cruises Departure port: Southampton Departure date: August 22, 2015 Destination: Norwegian fjords Duration: Eight nights Ship: Celebrity Eclipse Price: Ocean view cabin from £5,050 for four guests
Line: Disney Cruise Line Departure port: Dover Departure date: July 22, 2015 Destination: Baltic Duration: 12 nights Ship: Disney Magic Price: Ocean view cabin from £11,797 for four guests
Sail with Royal Caribbean International on its brand new vessel, Anthem of the Seas. The ship has everything from robotic barmen, to bumper cars and a huge viewing platform 300ft above sea level. There is so much to do on this new ship that you won’t want to get off, even as you sail through some of the gems of the Mediterranean.
A Norwegian fjords cruise might not seem like the first choice for families but anyone who has seen Disney’s Frozen will instantly correct you. Especially when you reveal that you will be visiting Bergen, one of the cities that inspired the film. Taking a cruise during August to the fjords is a great experience; and the dramatic landscape is something best appreciated by sea. There are far worse ways to do it than onboard the award-winning Celebrity Eclipse too.
Disney Cruise Line is offering a limited number of ex-UK sailings in 2015, with this July voyage being one of only two. Departing on July 22, with Goofy, Mickey and Minnie in tow, this sailing is guaranteed to be one that is remembered by the entire family. It’s worth mentioning that while a Disney Cruise Line holiday will either fill you with dread or sound like the best thing in the world, the operator does have ample amounts of ‘adults only’ restaurants, bars and pools – so the Magic Kingdom has something for everyone.

This sailing, which takes passengers from Dover to Ireland and on to Iceland, is a great way to see a bit of the UK – and far further afield too.
Ever thought about taking the family on holiday for Christmas but the idea of an airport around the festive holiday brings you out in a cold chill? The answer is to take a cruise. This Southampton roundtrip departs on December 19 and includes calls at Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Bruges before pulling up in the UK for December 28. One way to ensure no one burns the turkey.
Departing from Harwich in July this 12-night sailing takes passengers to Copenhagen, Tallinn and Saint Petersburg. Guests will enjoy sea days to try out the rock climbing wall, spa and theatre as well as shore excursions to some of Europe’s most historical cities. One undoubted highlight is an overnight stay in Russia, where passengers will have the opportunity to visit some of the grandest palaces ever built.

Calls from there include Madeira, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Lisbon.

Line: Voyages of Discovery Departure port: Portsmouth Departure date: May 1, 2015 Destination: British Isles with the National Trust Duration: 12 days Ship: Voyager Price: From £1,990

Line: Cruise & Maritime Voyages Departure port: Bristol Departure date: March 14, 2015 Destination: Solar eclipse and Northern Lights Duration: 12 nights Ship: Azores Price: From £2,149
Have a group of friends that have an interest in stately homes, castles and cathedrals? They could do much worse than this Voyages of Discovery cruise in partnership with the National Trust. Guest speakers will include naval expert Steve Ragnall and National Trust executive Catherine Leonard. Excursions will include various National Trust sites around the country, from Falmouth to Rosyth, across the 12-day itinerary.
The key to having a good time when travelling with a group of friends is being willing to occasionally go with what the majority wants to do. You can cut that easy-going streak right out with Regent though. The most inclusive cruise line at sea, Regent even puts shore excursions into the cost of the cruise. So, there will be no resentment if a certain somebody makes everyone go on that ‘expensive’ shore excursion – it’s all included in the price.
Cruise & Maritime Voyages is offering a real bucket-list cruise with this solar eclipse and Northern Lights sailing. Departing Bristol on March 14 (or Tilbury the day after), the cruise will call at Dublin, Reykjavik, the Faroe Islands, Shetlands, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides before returning to Bristol at the end of the month. ruise Europe is unique as an organisation in its geographical network, which spreads from Lisbon to St Petersburg and Iceland, encompassing an almost equal spread of member ports from both inside and outside the boundaries of the incoming ECA directive. Founded in 1992 with 27 ports, Cruise Europe has grown to a massive 115 members – and counting. This year alone it has recruited 15 more members; an achievement of which it is rightfully proud. It all goes towards making Cruise Europe even more relevant to cruise lines. Infrastructure in a safe region Cruise Europe’s member ports are keen to offer cruise lines the right level of infrastructure to attract ships. Its monthly newsletter
42
regularly brings stories about port development from all corners of Europe, showing the industry that ports in the region are investing in infrastructure in order to remain competitive in the future. The organisation can offer cruise lines a blend of large and modern turnaround ports married with very attractive ports of call, often situated close to each other. Combined with the fact that Northern and Atlantic Europe is a region without any major geopolitical issues, a year-round cruise destination that includes worldfamous regions and cities, there are many reasons to remain optimistic about the future of Cruise Europe’s 115 members. Importance of Cruise Europe Membership of Cruise Europe enables individual ports to market themselves to cruise
lines in a cost effective manner, and in particular the smaller ports that would otherwise not have the budget for large marketing and promotional campaigns. To assist cruise lines in planning, Cruise Europe produces a port handbook, and maintains a website that cruise lines use when planning itineraries. It also uploads articles, new developments and itineraries from our members regularly, and distributes them to key players in the industry through its newsletter. The day-to-day management of Cruise Europe is conducted by Jens Chr. Skrede, the group’s managing director, who works out of his office in Norway. The Chairman is Capt. Michael McCarthy from the Port of Cork.

Launched in 2011 with 240 European destinations, the company now has a choice of close to 10,000 excursions at more than 700 ports worldwide.

CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
ADVERTORIAL Smaller ship cruising – it’s the little things that make all the difference
W
hen customers think of their next holiday, choosing the destination is the natural starting point. A holiday where you can visit a string of mustsee places on one relaxed and stress-free trip is sure to appeal – cruising offers exactly that. Fred. Olsen’s classic, stylish ships are built to a smaller scale, creating a warmer, more intimate atmosphere on board. Plus, being smaller allows the ships to sail right into the heart of destinations and to ports that the larger ships cannot reach. Whether your customer prefers the still waters and soaring cliffs of Norway’s enchanting fjords; the energetic pace of Buenos Aires; the tapestry of architectural delights in St. Petersburg; or the expansive white-sand beaches in Antigua, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines can offer all this and more. With CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
the 2015/16 cruise programme, guests can choose from a range of unique itineraries, covering over 200 destinations, offering adventure, relaxation and culture on board Fred. Olsen’s four ships – Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Black Watch. If cruising is to be the ultimate in relaxation, then it should be easy from the moment your customer leaves their house. So if you’re looking for a local departure to suit your client, it’s great to know that Fred. Olsen’s ships operate from a choice of ten regional departure ports all around the UK, making it easier and quicker for guests to start their holiday. The cruise line offers sailings from Southampton, Dover, Avonmouth (Bristol), Harwich, Tilbury, Belfast, Liverpool, Port of Tyne (Newcastle), Greenock (Glasgow) and Rosyth (Edinburgh) – a greater
selection than any other mainstream cruise line. Having spent years refining the cruising experience – and winning awards to prove it – Fred. Olsen seems to have all the details down to a fine art. Describing their vessels as more country house hotel than Las Vegas resort, the company says the focus on personal service is one of the things that keeps guests cruising with them time and time again. Offering a service where guests are known by their name, not by a cabin number, and there’s every chance the bartender will remember guests’ favourite tipples – Fred. Olsen ships are proof that it’s the little things that make a big difference.
