July / August 2018 | Forward EDITOR’S LETTER

Seattle is more than just somewhere to leave from CRUISE ADVISER

Located in the West Coast state of Washington, Seattle is the gateway to some of North America’s most remarkable destinations. From the port city, cruises head either north to Canada and Alaska, or south to California and beyond. But Seattle is a worthy destination on its own, with a fascinating history, thriving food scene and beautiful natural backdrop, providing easy access to the ocean, as well as lakes, mountains and evergreen forests. It’s Pure Bliss also the summer homeport of Norwegian Cruise Line’s brand-new Norwegian Bliss, a ship that is really worth getting excited about. With a race track, laser tag and aqua park, it’s among the most fun vessels at sea, as Sam Ballard discovers on p38. In this issue, we also report on three more new ship launches. Sara Macefield joins agents (and Craig David) to celebrate Marella Explorer joining the Marella Cruises’ fleet (p30); Jill Sayles enjoys Crystal Debussy in Cologne, as Crystal Cruises launches its latest ultra-luxury river ship (p34); plus, Jane Archer is on board MSC Seaview as MSC Cruises continues its expansion at a dizzying pace (p48). Elsewhere, we share our tips for selling to new to cruise customers (p44), plus we chat to the fascinating Raul García, the man behind Manatee Amazon Explorer, which operates on the Rio Napo in Ecuador while giving back to the rainforest’s indigenous people. There’s all the usual news (from p7), fam trip round-ups and new hires (p22-23). There’s also a chance to win an incredible seven-night trip with Marella Cruises in Panana. Turn to p55 and answer the simple question to be in with a chance. Good luck, and we hope you enjoy reading.

TAKEOVER

Royal Caribbean buys Silversea

The cruise giant taps into the growing luxury market after acquiring a 66.7% stake in what it describes as the “crown jewel” of ultra-luxury cruise Royal Caribbean Cruises’ decision to acquire a 66.7 per cent stake in luxury line Silversea Cruises will add “financial backing for further growth and expertise all around the world”, according to Peter Shanks, the managing director of Silversea in the UK. Speaking to cruise adviser, Shanks added that he expected growth within the brand to speed up. Silversea currently has a fleet of nine ultra-luxury ships with two on order, as well as an option for one more. Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, added: “Silversea is a crown jewel, and the acknowledged leader in luxury and

expedition cruising, two key markets that are poised for growth.” “Uniting our two companies presents an extraordinary opportunity to expand vacation options for guests and create revenue in strategic growth areas.” Royal Caribbean currently consists of three brands – Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises – it also has stakes in Spanish line Pullmantur and Tui Cruises, which focuses on the German-speaking market. “We are proud to welcome aboard Manfredi Lefebvre [Silversea chairman], a visionary leader whose high standards and history of

innovation we deeply respect,” Fain said. “Manfredi will remain executive chairman of Silversea, continuing to lead its strategy long term.” The Silversea executive team, including CEO Roberto Martinoli, will continue in their roles. Ben Bouldin, the UK boss of Royal Caribbean International, told cruise adviser: “We’ve got three brands which all have their niche in the marketplace. “What we’ve acquired is a six-star, ultra-luxury line. They’ve got nine ships with two on order. It’s a popular sector at the moment and it gives us the potential to tap into some of that growth.”

Bliss joins fleet in Seattle

Norwegian Cruise Line welcomes new ship in event in US city Norwegian Cruise Line has launched its latest ship, Norwegian Bliss, at a star-studded event in Seattle, which included music from the likes of Gloria Gaynor, Train and Tone Loc playing in different venues on board the ship (see p38 for more). The 4,100-passenger vessel is to sail seven-day Alaska cruises until September, after which it will head down to the Caribbean. The ship will return for its second season in Alaska in 2019. A typical seven-day roundtrip cruise will call at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria.

Frank del Rio, the president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, said that Bliss was the best booked ship in Norwegian’s history. Norwegian said that Bliss, which is the largest ship ever to homeport in Seattle, has been purpose built for Alaskan cruises – boasting a 1,900 square metre Observation Lounge.

Harry Sommer, vice president of international business development, said that travel agents could “really grow with the company”. He added that they would have 64,000 beds by 2026 – 50 per cent more than it currently has. The UK underwent a 20 per cent growth in gross ticket sales between 2015 and 2017.

Three ships on order

Founder Galli Zugaro announces expansion to expediton line’s fleet Boutique river cruise company Aqua Expeditions is stepping up its UK marketing efforts as it embarks on the biggest expansion since its launch 11 years ago, writes Sara Macefield. Founder and chief executive Francesco Galli Zugaro confirmed that the upscale operator planned to add three more vessels to its two-strong fleet, which currently comprises the Aria Amazon on the Peruvian Amazon and the Aqua Mekong on the Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia.

Financing for the new 20-cabin vessels is still being negotiated, but he hoped this would be completed by the end of the year, with the new luxury river craft following in 2019/2020. “We are not only looking at river cruising, but coastal cruising too,” Galli Zugaro added. The company is keen to build UK business through the trade having

appointed a full-time UK sales manager, Katerina Gavrilova, last September. She is based in London and also looks after the Russian market. Aqua Expeditions has also unveiled an improved travel agent portal on its website, giving agents more control over bookings from start to finish and allowing them to book larger numbers of passengers in one hit.

Holland America Line is to run a series of destination rich cruises on board the Maasdam called EXC In-Depth Voyages – taking the concept of its new destination lounges even further. The 12 cruises – which will launch in September with a 48-day itinerary from Fort Lauderdale to Polynesia via Easter Island – include 154 ports in 36 countries, with 28 either maiden calls or ports that Holland America has not called at for years. Each cruise – with the exception of one repeat cruise in Tahiti – will be unique. The 1,200-passenger Maasdam will be running with just 1,000 people on board for the EXC In-Depth Voyages and also be fitted with eight inflatable zodiacs.

Saga has marked a milestone in the construction of its first ever newbuild vessel, the 999-passenger Spirit of Discovery. The event saw delegates and media witness the ship’s keel being laid at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. Spirit of Discovery is the first of two newbuilds being planned for Saga. The ship will start sailing from Dover in July 2019, cruising to the Channel Islands, Norwegian fjords, the Baltics and the Mediterranean. Spirit of Discovery will replace Saga Pearl II in July 2019, while Saga’s second ship, Spirit of Adventure, is planned to enter service in 2020.

OPINION

Why we need to embrace the growth of river cruise Janet Parton, sales director for Avalon Waterways

I

n recent years, river cruise has become the fastestgrowing sector in the cruise industry, with many companies reinventing themselves and their product to attract a more diverse customer base. The result? River cruises are now firmly trending and it’s a truly exciting time for the industry. This change of direction has seen a shift towards many companies featuring more luxurious ships and the introduction of themed itineraries that offer river cruise guests so much more than the opportunity to just sightsee in a few key ‘hop-on, hop-off ’ locations along their chosen river – and it’s the latter advancement that I’m keen to provide some insight into.

“Given the diversity of themed cruises, there is a real opportunity to attract new-to-cruise UK consumers” From culinary and Christmasthemed cruises to river holidays that feature increasingly diverse active adventures ashore; the availability of more enriching itineraries that allow customers to delve deeper into destinations is a winning formula. For customers sailing on France’s

Rhône or Seine rivers, excursions can include activities such as hiking or biking through the Camargue Regional Nature Park or visiting the Normandy Landing beaches, while music-themed cruises on the Danube allow travellers to explore cities and towns once popular with composers like Mozart and Beethoven. Given the diversity of themed cruises available, there is a real opportunity to attract new-to-cruise UK consumers who will be excited by the prospect of enjoying shorebased excursions that help them get under the skin of a destination. To achieve success in selling themed cruises, it’s vital that agents get to grips with the wide range of product offered by operators, be it trips tailored to suit a traditional cruise audience or those itineraries aimed at millennials or solo travellers. Our Avalon Waterways programme offers customers a diverse and exclusive choice of specially packaged themed river cruise holidays with itineraries focused on music, golf, history, food and drink, art, nature, active discovery and Christmas – each providing customers with the opportunity to indulge their passions at no additional cost while enjoying a refined luxury holiday to some of Europe’s best destinations. With shore excursions at every port of call led by Certified Local Guides and VIP access to must see sights included in the price, customers can really benefit from talking with these knowledgeable experts to help them get the inside track on the best ways to explore each location on their itinerary, be this through a guided tour or independent exploration.

MSC Cruises orders fifth Meraviglia class ship

MSC Cruises has signed a €900m order for the construction of a fifth Meraviglia-class cruise ship. The ship, which is due to be delivered in 2023, will be equipped with a new generation of dual-fuel engines designed to run on liquefied natural gas. It will also feature a number of other innovative environmental technologies, including an advanced wastewater treatment system compliant with the world’s most stringent regulatory standards. The ship will be built by STX France at the Saint-Nazaire shipyard, where three other ships are currently being constructed for MSC – the MSC Virtuosa, MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima. MSC Bellissima will be the first ship to feature a digital cruise personal assistant, called Zoe, for use in the cabins. Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ executive chairman, said: “Our fifth Meraviglia class cruise ship will bring a new generation of cuttingedge environmental technology to the market, benefitting from a new generation of liquefied natural gaspowered engines. “This will help us further reduce our environmental footprint and advance in our journey of constant improvement.” CRUISE-ADVISER.COM

Agent registration opens for Clia events in Manchester, Norwich and Malaga Agent registration has opened for three Clia UK and Ireland events for this autumn: two Luxury and River Cruise Showcases in Manchester and Norwich in September, and its inaugural European Luxury Cruise Showcase in Malaga in October. Andy Harmer, Clia senior vicepresident membership and director UK & Ireland, said: “We are delighted to announce that registration is open for agents for these three events.” At the Luxury and River Cruise Showcases in Manchester and Norwich, on September 13 and 20

respectively, around 100 agent places are available at each location. Following the two UK-based events, the association is hosting its inaugural European Luxury Cruise Showcase in Malaga on October 15 and 16. Harmer said: “This two-day event will include ship visits onboard

Silversea’s Silver Whisper and Seabourn’s Ovation, events courtesy of Visit Costa Del Sol and their partners and keynote conference sessions and a cruise trade fair. “This unique event has limited availability, due to maximum ship visit numbers, so please book early to guarantee your place. NEW HIRES

A-Rosa expands its UK team with new executive assistant

Riviera Travel expands agency sales team Riviera Travel has recruited its sixth agency sales team member. Emma Rodgers joined as sales development manager, north. She will be fieldbased, looking after agents in the north of England and Scotland. This is the first time the company has had a dedicated regional point of contact for travel agents in the north.

Amanda Darrington leaves Royal Caribbean

A-Rosa river cruises has appointed Olivia Stephens (pictured above, right) in the newly created role of executive assistant. It is the first appointment made in the UK since the line entered the UK market. Stephens’ role will support Lucia Rowe (pictured above, left), head of A-Rosa UK & Ireland, and she will be responsible for liaising with both tour operator partners and travel

agents on regular basis, hosting training sessions, attending trade shows and more. Overall, the aim is to grow the visibility of A-Rosa and its products to help increase sales in all market segments. With new owners, a new ship under construction and further fleet expansion plans, this appointment forms part of A-Rosa’s ongoing growth strategy.

Royal Caribbean UK & Ireland sales director Amanda Darrington has left the company after just over a year. She will be replaced in the shortterm by Royal Caribbean’s insights director Stuart Byron, who joined the cruise line just six months ago. Royal Caribbean’s UK & Ireland managing director Ben Bouldin said Darrington was departing “to pursue personal projects”. He said Byron would take on the sales remit for the next six months, in addition to his insights brief, until a permanent replacement for Darrington is found.

Agents set sail on the Rhine with Viking Viking invited 10 agents on two-night cruise from Cologne to Amsterdam on Viking Kvasir. Jill Sayles joins them and find out how important fam trips are in selling the product Day 1 After arriving in the historic city of Cologne, Germany, the agents enjoy a buffet lunch onboard in Viking Kvasir’s elegant Aquavit Terrace, before checking into its Standard category staterooms. Afterwards, the group sets off on a walking tour and a visit to the stunning Gothic cathedral, a Unesco World Heritage Site. They also have the option of an excursion ascending one of the cathedral’s twin spires for incredible views across the city and beyond. Later in the afternoon, the group has some free time – some use it to explore further, while others kick back with a cocktail on the Sun Deck. Later in the day, there is another excursion available for guests to explore Cologne’s beer culture,

sampling Kölsch – a light, crisp beer brewed only in Cologne – and a Bauhaus dinner in the city, before returning to the ship for the lateevening departure. In the evening, the group eats a three-course dinner on the Aquavit Terrace with a choice of local speciality dishes, a vegetarian dish, and signature plates that are always available on Viking Longships and come paired with local wines. The evening’s entertainment in the Lounge is a violinist accompanied by a piano playing a selection of classical works by composers with a connection to the area. The ship sets off for the next part of its journey at midnight.

“Nothing beats first-hand experience, which is why we invest in sending our travel agent partners away to understand a Viking cruise. The knowledge gained from a fam trip is invaluable, so it is vital that we welcome as many agents on board as we can.” Andrew Schweitzer, key account manager, Viking

Day 2

The morning is spent enjoying breakfast while sailing along the Rhine from Germany into the Netherlands and taking in the beautiful scenery. There is a choice of onboard activities, such as sampling Dutch cheeses and jenever, a distilled juniper liquor, and a presentation on the Dutch Golden Age. After a buffet lunch in the Restaurant, the ship makes a brief stop at Gorinchem where most of the agents choose to go on an optional afternoon excursion exploring the local cheese industry, with plenty

Promotion of opportunity to sample some tasty Gouda. Following the tour, the ship sails on to Kinderdijk, a Unesco World Heritage Site featuring 19 historic windmills, where the agents learn about why the windmills were built and see how they work. There are a couple more optional excursions available here, including a trip on a vintage barge and a two-hour bike tour, which Claire Harris from Hays Travel enjoys. “I definitely recommend the cycling tour,” she enthuses. “I love the fact that you have your own personal device to be able to sync with the local guide who is extremely informative.” Back onboard, the group attends the Captain’s Cocktail Party before Viking Kvasir casts off at 7pm. Another tasty dinner is served in the Restaurant and the agents enjoy a lively evening of music and dancing in the Lounge, before the ship arrives in Amsterdam at around midnight.

Day 3

After breakfast, guests enjoy an added post-cruise tour of Amsterdam, taking advantage of the Dutch capital’s incredible art and architecture, while the agents head to the airport, their perceptions suitably changed. “I enjoyed the luxury, the relaxed atmosphere and the top notch food,” says Binie Shah from Affinion International Travel. “The rooms have everything you need. I would never have thought of going on a cruise, but this has made me think again.”

INTERVIEW

“It’s a magic circle of conservationism’ Anthony Pearce talks to Raúl Garcia – who runs Advantage Ecuador on the Amazon – about working in harmony with local communities and the environment

The Manatee Amazon Explorer (top left) and the sights of the Ecuadorian rainforest, including the rare pink river dolphin (bottom right)

Raúl Garcia is the real deal. The owner of two tiny ships based in Ecuador – the Manatee Amazon Explorer and the Anakonda Amazon Explorer – is an environmentalist and explorer who has combined conservationism and adventure in a way few others have. For 25 years, Advantage Ecuador – sold in the UK through eWaterways – has been running cruises through the Ecuadorian rainforest on the narrow Rio Napo tributary, exploring one of the world’s most fascinating and biodiverse regions – all while encouraging guests and

indigenous people alike to protect the environment. After disassembling the original Manatee, he built another, more luxurious version, which carries 30 guests, in July 2017. The 280 tonne ship has a draft of just 75cm, allowing it to navigate the difficult passage, where water depth fluctuates. Itineraries explore the upper basins of the Napo and Aguarico Rivers, around Limoncocha National Biological Reserve and the Yasuni National Park, Ecuador’s largest animal reserve. “The Amazon rainforest is very rich in wildlife,” says Garcia when we

meet in London. “It was covered in ice millions of years ago, but Ecuador was without ice, allowing the plants and animals to survive. “It is why Ecuador, this tiny country, is so mega diverse. One part of the Amazon is totally different to the next. In the whole of the US they have just 700 species of birds – we have more than 1,680.” Guests on these three, four and seven-night itineraries learn about the geological formation of the Amazon, the culture of its inhabitants and, of course, its wildlife: grey and fresh water pink dolphins, stingrays, CRUISE-ADVISER.COM

snakes, sloths and elusive manatees, to name just a few. “Sloths, all the animals, the monkeys, they can swim,” says Garcia of the unique ecosystem. “They have to. It’s a water world. We have a lot of rain.” A key part of Garcia’s work is conservationism, which crucially involves working with the region’s indigenous people. “Every day there is a lot of damage,” he says. “At this minute, someone is cutting the forest. I want to demonstrate with my type of tourism the way to be more sustainable. This is why we built the ship.

“I just have the ship on the river. The community is the owner of the land. I’ve started to do a deal with them – no contracts signed. Your word is better than a contract. “One project we’re running with the community is protection of river turtles. In season, they used to pick up all the turtles’ eggs and eat them. But now, every week, we go with our guests and release a turtle into the wild, and we pay the community for that.” Then there are the remarkable pink river dolphins. Garcia says that getting up close to them will “change your life – believe me”.

CRUISE-ADVISER.COM

“They live like a family, eight members. But they are often killed and used as bait to catch the small catfish, which are sold by the indigenous people to Peruvians. That’s how they make money. “We’ve spent eight years working on this project to protect them. We started out with six dolphins, now we have 18.” By paying the community and protecting the dolphins Garcia says they create a “magical circle of conservationism”. It’s proof that cruise tourism can have a positive impact.

PORTS OF CALL

Lyon

Sam Ballard explores the fabulous French city which is a focal point for river cruises on the Rhône and Saône Located in the heart of France, at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon is one of the jewels of European river cruising. Renowned for its cuisine, in a country that prides itself on its gastronomy, the city has numerous feathers in its cap, including a charming old town, beautiful cathedral and incredible history. This is quintessential France, but without the Parisian prices. It’s also the gateway to some of the best wines in the world. Given all of that, it’s little wonder that most of the major river cruise lines operate on the Rhône/Saône. Itineraries will typically start in Lyon, first going north (on the Saône) to Mâcon, which is a short transfer from Beaune with its stunning Unescolisted medieval hospital. Then it’s south, back through Lyon, and on to the Rhône’s famous valleys and vineyards with calls at pretty French villages, such as Viviers, before finishing up at Arles and Avignon. Lyon is foodie heaven. Birthplace of the renowned chef Paul Bocuse – the genius behind nouvelle cuisine. His influence is everywhere. Not surprising for a man who was given

the accolade of Chef of the Century. There are plenty of Michelin star restaurants in the city – and many that have been awarded multiple stars, among the most famous being La Mère Brazier and Bocuse’s own L’Auberge du Pont de Collonges, a three Michelin star restaurant that is often simply referred to as Bocuse. Needless to say, booking early is recommended. The city boasts an imposing gothic cathedral, which sits in the middle of the Old Town and took 300 years to build, as well as an equally impressive basilica – the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere – which overlooks the whole city from an imposing perch high on a hill. Despite only being about 150 years old, its white walls make it look like something out of a fairytale. Take the opportunity to head up to the basilica at night for the best views. One of the most unique features of Lyon are the traboules – secret passageways that were used by silk tradesman in the fourth century. The corridors allowed workers to move quickly around a city where the maze of streets often do not connect –

26

July / August 2018 | Forward opening up to small courtyards with winding staircases that lead up to apartments. Locals say that you are not a true Lyonnaise until you are able to navigate the 400 or so passageways that slice through the Old Town. The traboules took on a different use during the Second World War, however, when local Resistance fighters would use them for clandestine meetings to thwart the invading Nazi troops. They’re widely credited for being the reason why Lyon was never fully occupied – giving them an even more special place in locals’ hearts. When in Lyon – or most cities in France for that matter – it is clear that the country’s fascination with cycling permeates day-to-day life. So, our advice to you is to do as the French do and use two wheels to get around. The city has mile upon mile of marked cycle lanes – not to mention a large amount of space on the banks of the river. Sure enough, a tour around the city on bike proves to consistently be one of the most popular shore excursions offered on a Rhône/Saône river cruise. If your ship doesn’t offer one then look up a private tour guide. It really is a great way to see the city within a limited time. Whether on bike or on foot, the Parc de la Tête d’or is a must. Located on the banks of the river – and not far from many of the river ship moorings

– the manicured grounds and elegant orangeries offer up the very best in 19th century French sophistication. There’s even a zoo inside the sprawling 117-hectre site. However you choose to spend your time in Lyon, a good time is guaranteed. The city’s Old Town is walkable – although beware that it is cobbled – and if you want to scale the Fourviere Hill and are worried

about mobility, there is a charming funicular that dates back to 1862. Like most things in Lyon it is done with a measure of elegance that the French do so well. The city really is a special place to visit on a river cruise and its proximity to the French Riviera and the vineyards of the Rhône valley is also a real bonus. A combination that makes for a holiday you will never forget.

SHIP LAUNCH

Reborn to do it Sara Macefield joins Craig David for the deck party to christen Marella Cruises’ new ship Marella Explorer The arrival of Marella Cruises’ latest ship, Marella Explorer, in May – amid the fanfare of a dazzling deck party in Palma, Majorca headlined by singer Craig David and filled with the enthusiastic whooping of Tui agents – marked the latest milestone in the line’s transformation. In just two years the former Thomson Cruises has undergone a name change and launched three larger and more modern ships, with a fourth to follow next spring. Each one has upped the ante for the brand, ushering in notable facilities lacking on its older ships, which are steadily being let go. Marella Explorer is the latest ground-breaker to join the fleet with its expanded choice of dining venues, a wider range of onboard shops (including the first Cath Kidston store at sea) and a ramped-up entertainment programme. But the real star of this ship is its spa – the first Champneys at sea

which has to be one of the most impressive pampering havens afloat. This sybaritic retreat is a potent mix of opulence and indulgence, with a jaw-dropping thermal suite of Turkish-style hammams, an Arabianstyled rasul, steam rooms and one of the biggest saunas I’ve ever seen. It’s also one of the best value. With treatments mirroring Champneys’ charges on land with 50-minute massages from £75 and day passes to the thermal suite costing just £15, rates are lower than on other ships. Such plush pampering facilities are the legacy of the time Marella Explorer spent sailing for Hamburgbased Tui Cruises, when the spa was expanded to cater for its wellnessloving German clientele. However, this ship started life in 1996 as Celebrity Cruises’ Galaxy – the setting of the BBC reality series The Cruise, which propelled singer Jane McDonald to fame, before moving to Tui in 2009.

Launched as MV Galaxy and sailed for Tui as Mein Schiff. Renamed Marella Explorer in May 2018 following a multimillion pound makeover.

July / August 2018 | Midship After joining Marella in April, the 1,924-passenger ship underwent a multi-million pound bow to stern revamp, emerging complete with the spruced up spa and a host of other new features. Indigo is the other new headline attraction – a new cool bar, club and casino combo ideally positioned at the top of the ship with 180-degree wraparound windows. At night it comes alive with a thumping nightclub vibe conducted from a DJ booth with a much-hyped transparent touchscreen DJ system called the Emulator – claimed to be the world’s first. But there are plenty of other night-time haunts to choose from, including Marella’s first onboard pub, the Squid & Anchor, with its specialist gin and whisky bar; the speakeasy Aperitif bar; and The Lounge where pianists tinkle the ivories of the hot pink piano. Passengers heading to the theatre can enjoy 12 new shows that turn up the beat, with themes from movie tracks and sing-alongs to pop icons and soul sounds. My appetite is sparked by the 10-strong line-up of dining venues where the sophisticated Dining Club makes its debut, charging £34.95pp for its blend of experimental French cuisine. The new Umi Sushi restaurant serves Japanese fare for £9.95pp, but one of the most appealing new areas is the conservatory-like Mediterranean lounge where its two speciality eateries serve free pizza and pasta or Portuguese tapas for £9.95pp. The range of cabins is similarly appealing, with 11 different categories catering for single travellers up to families of five, although I loved the cabins that came complete with hammocks strung across the balconies. Marella Explorer is certainly big on all-round appeal, with its kids’ clubs and teen hangout zone, giant movie screen and blissful adult-only deck where iPad carrying waiters can be summoned at the touch of each lounger’s call button. It’s not surprising that more agents are keen to sell the Marella product,

Fun and fireworks at the deck party for Marella Explorer in Palma, Majorca on May 17

but independent retailers complain that inhouse Tui shops are given preferential rates. It’s a charge Marella managing director Chris Hackney disputes, stressing there is no difference

in pricing between Tui shops and independents. “The price in the system is the same regardless and third-party agents get their commission on top,” he confirmed.

SHIP CHRISTENING

Crystal Debussy redefines true luxury in the river cruise industry Jill Sayles joins Crystal River Cruises for the christening of its newest ship in Amsterdam, the latest in the luxury line’s rapidly expanding river fleet Expanding at a rate of five river ships over the last two years, Crystal River Cruises recently welcomed its newest ship, Crystal Debussy, to its fleet at a christening ceremony in Amsterdam. Debussy is the sister ship to Crystal Ravel, Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler, as well as the redesigned Crystal Mozart, which launched the luxury line’s river cruise product back in 2016. The event was attended by Crystal’s president and CEO, Tom Wolber; Crystal River Cruises’ vice president and managing director, Walter Littlejohn; and the ship’s godmother, Broadway star Rachel York.

Wolber joined the cruise line in September 2017 following the departure of Edie Rodriguez, under whose leadership the company added Crystal Yacht Expedition Cruises, Crystal Air and Crystal River Cruises. Of the latter, he said: “Crystal River Cruises has raised the bar of excellence with each new ship, and now again as Crystal Debussy joins the fleet, effectively redefining true luxury in the river industry.” On the subject of expansion, Littlejohn said how the line is “changing the face of river cruising in Europe” with its high-end, luxury river cruise experience.

Set over four decks – named Harmony, Seahorse, Crystal and Vista – Crystal Debussy accommodates 106 guests in 53 rooms and has a crew of 68. It follows the luxury model of all Crystal’s river vessels as an all-suite, all-butler vessel, with every category of accommodation positioned above the waterline and the butler service offered in every room category. Suites also have the company’s Panoramic Balcony-Windows that lower from the ceiling to incorporate a balcony allowing for a more spacious room. Rooms are in the following categories: two-bedroom Crystal Suite with connecting rooms,

The king-sized beds face the river and there are walk-in closets and dual vanity units in the bathrooms in most categories. The high standard continues with Etro toiletries, robes and slippers, a pillow menu, wall-mounted flat-screen HD TVs, iPads, mini-bar, quiet box system for excursions and a complimentary bottle of Blanc de Blancs. Dining options include the Waterside Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open dining set-up. The menu consists of farm-to-table local dishes and traditional choices all prepared with fresh produce sourced locally each day. At the informal Bistro Café, guests can choose from a light buffet throughout the day, tapas-style dinner options and freshly made ice-cream made on board. The Vintage Room is a small, intimate dining area that can be booked for special occasions; it can also be converted to a meeting room. The Pantry near the reception area offers snacks thought the day. The Palm Court is the social hub where there’s an onboard pianist and local entertainers (if moored at a destination overnight), plus enrichment presentations. It’s a light and airy space with a glass roof and floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the views. All drinks in the lounge are included apart from a selection of speciality drinks. On the top Vista deck, guests can relax on loungers and there’s a small bar. Elsewhere, the ship has a spa and fitness room and there’s a small indoor pool at the stern. The vessel embarked on its maiden voyage along the Rhine on April 9, sailing itineraries between Amsterdam and Basel. In the line’s 2019 river programme, 14-night sailings have been replaced with seven-night and 10-night itineraries. Littlejohn said there has been a lot of support from the travel trade, with good growth from the UK market which has helped with the expansion of the river product. However, he indicated that, going forward, new plans will be rolled out at a slower rate.

NORWEGIAN BLISS

Speechless in Seattle Sam Ballard boards Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship Norwegian Bliss in its Pacific Northwest homeport and is blown away by both

July / August 2018 | Midship Walking through Seattle’s Pike Place Market, wandering in and out of old curio shops and dodging the seafood vendors hurling fish at one another, it’s easy to fall in love with the city. With a downtown that’s small enough to be walkable and an atmosphere that’s warm and friendly, it’s no wonder that Norwegian Cruise Line picked Seattle to be the home for its latest ship, Norwegian Bliss. During three days in the city we are given the full tour. We learn about famous residents, including Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, both of whom left their mark on the city – the former quite literally in the form of MoPOP, the city’s museum of pop culture, which was designed to look like one of his smashed electric guitars. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Hendrix memorabilia and a huge tower of guitars, as well as archival pieces from Star Trek and Star Wars. The museum stands next to Seattle’s soaring Space Needle, the city’s most famous landmark. The 184m tall observation tower was built for the 1962 World’s Fair and includes a revolving restaurant. The entire Space Needle is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation – which includes replacing wire and steel on the observation deck and adding a glass floor to the restaurant. Everything, barring the restaurant, has remained open throughout the work, although on our visit it did feel like a bit of a building site. Another popular tourist attraction in the region, and an absolute must for anyone with even the remotest interest in planes, is the massive Boeing factory in Everett, about 40km north of Seattle. The building, which is the largest in the world by volume, is where the company builds its wide-bodied 747, 767, 777 and 787 Dreamliner aircraft. We’re walked through one of the factory’s main passageways (which is so long that you can’t even see the end of it) and are taken up to one of a series of viewing platforms where we look out at aircraft in different stages of construction. It’s an incredible thing to behold: as far as the eye can see there are aircraft bearing the

July / August 2018 | Midship famous insignias of British Airways, Emirates and American Airlines being worked on by the factory’s 30,000 experts. There’s even a single Dreamliner for Air Tanzania, looking resplendent after a paint-job that included a rather regal looking handpainted giraffe. It’s a plane spotter’s dream. Seattle sits within sprawling Washington in the Pacific Northwest – arguably the most diverse state in America. There are glaciers in the Canadian-bordered north, deserts in the east, rainforests in the west and vineyards to the south. This makes for a big outdoors culture and the state boasts National Parks, volcanoes and mountains, the latter of which dominate the skyline. It is also the gateway to Alaska for the cruise guests who board in Seattle. Making a stay in the city an ideal pre or postcruise experience. The decision by Norwegian Cruise Line to position Norwegian Bliss in Seattle was seen by many as a surprising move. It’s not something that often happens. More often than not, new ships are launched in spring/early summer and complete a season in the Mediterranean before heading over to the Caribbean. To put new tonnage in Alaska is to highlight just what a cruise there has to offer: the chance to see incredible glaciers, learn more about goldrush history and spot the Alaska Big Five: bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou and wolves. There’s a reason why it’s called America’s Last Frontier. For its Alaska season, which will last until late September, Norwegian Bliss will be operating seven-day Seattle round-trip cruises calling at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria. With any Alaskan cruise the itinerary is always going to be king. However, what’s curious about this season is that the ship isn’t going to sit out of the limelight. First, the numbers. Norwegian Bliss has a maximum capacity of just over 4,000 guests and boasts more than 20 places to eat on board, including the all new Los Lobos, an upmarket Mexican, and Q, a Texas smokehouse, which serves up barbecued food to the sound of live country music. CRUISE-ADVISER.COM

41

July / August 2018 | Midship There are classic Norwegian restaurants, such as Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Sea – which serves up the biggest plate of nachos I’ve seen in my life – La Cucina, a classy Italian affair and the ever-popular Cagney’s Steakhouse. There’s also a fine selection of bars on board – with The District Brew House showcasing the best that local craft breweries have to offer. The bar boasts 22 craft beers and ciders on tap – including a Big Ballard’s IPA from Seattle brewery Redhook. There are also bars which each specialise in mojitos (Sugarcane Mojito Bar), wine (Cellars) and whisky (Maltings) respectively. This being Norwegian Cruise Line, the new ship is not short of entertainment. There is the intimate Cavern Club – a replica of the Liverpool original – where a Beatles cover band play the Fab Four’s hits every night. On our cruise the band played two sets each evening, splitting them between early and late material. This partnership with the Cavern Club is a brilliant idea – given The Beatles’ enduring popularity with Americans and Brits alike. The ship’s main theatre includes an almost full-length production of Jersey Boys, which is like being in the West End, as well as Havana, a Cuban dance show created especially for Norwegian. Out on deck, Bliss boasts the biggest race track at sea, which proves to be a lot of fun, despite my initial reservations (priced at $9.95). Laser tag ($5) is the other part of Bliss’ blockbuster entertainment options that will keep the kids (and the young at heart) entertained on those days at sea. Although they will both probably be more popular during the ship’s Caribbean season. Norwegian’s Aqua Park includes two slides – the sedate Aqua Racer and the heart-stopping Ocean Loops, which involves standing on a platform which is whipped away after a short countdown – sending you hurtling down a slide and then steeply up in a big circle – if you’ve built up enough speed. If not, you slide back down and have to be rescued by one of the slide’s attendants.

Decks: 20 Capacity: 4,004 Cabins: 2,038

Brand new energy efficient ship, designed to sail to both Alaska and the Caribbean and combining quality with fun

Norwegian says that Bliss has been built for Alaskan cruises. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the 1,800 square metre Observation Lounge up on deck 15. The huge space – with 180-degree views – is perfect for a scenic sail through the Inside Passage. The lounge is incredibly well designed, with sophisticated furniture and a classy colour palette. You could say it’s more Oceania than traditional Norwegian Cruise Line – and it’s one of the best examples I have seen of the influence that Frank del Rio has had on the company since the deal with his ultra-luxury lines Regent Seven Seas and Oceania. It seems that Norwegian has massively upped its game on Norwegian Bliss. This is a ship that is going to spend its time between Alaska and the Caribbean – a difficult balancing act. However, under the company’s current stewardship, it is getting it exactly right.

NEW-TO-CRUISE CUSTOMERS Abta’s Holiday Habits Report 2017 shows that nearly half of UK holidaymakers (42 per cent) who have never been on a cruise are interested in going on one. It stated that cruises appeal to the growing market of potential cruisers because they offer new experiences, provide a greater range of wellness, educational, culinary, cultural onboard activities and entertainment. When selling cruise, it’s important to identify your market by appealing to the emerging adventurer, the lone traveller, the special interest cruiser, families and couples. To attract first time cruisers point to new destinations, itineraries, departure ports and duration of cruises. It’s also important to match new customers to the correct ship as they are more likely to book – and rebook – when paired with the right product. Here are examples of itineraries suitable for new-to-cruise customers travelling solo, as a couple and as a family.

Solo A cruise is ideal for solo travellers. Meeting other people on a ship is not difficult, especially when participating in entertainment and excursion activities. There are often other passengers travelling alone they can buddy up with and the open seating at meal times makes it easy to mingle. Alternatively, the solo traveller can spend time alone if they wish. More and more cruise lines are offering no single supplement, as well as staterooms, social spaces and activities for people travelling alone.

Some ships are adult-only and couples can even get married, renew vows, or celebrate an anniversary on board. Below are options for a city break, a great way to see places without the hassle of unpacking, a sunny getaway from Southamption without the stress of an airport, and an exotic expedition in the South Pacific.

This is a voyage of adventure and guests will interact with local communities and learn about the geology, wildlife and botany with the expedition team.

Family Choosing a family cruise as a first-timer might be a bit daunting, but only because there’s so much to choose from. Ask your clients what kind of holiday they want to take and then find a cruise line to suit. They can then decide the size of ship they want be on and what onboard facilities best suit the age of their children or other members of the family group. Ocean cruises are the most family-friendly, but there are cruises that offer something for everyone when travelling with multiple generations.

NEW SHIP

MSC’s new ship Seaview – the first of 11 on order – is seriously glitzy Jane Archer attends the christening in Genoa and is impressed with the innovations – including the longest zipline at sea – and food offerings MSC’s new ship Seaview is packed with the latest innovations – boasting everything from a slide-boarding flume to a spa treatment where you can get rubbed in wine. The vessel, christened by Italian actress Sophia Loren in a gala ceremony in Genoa in June, is the second MSC ship with an unusual Miami condo-style design at the back and lots of outdoor space. It is also the first of a huge order for 11 new ships between now and 2026. “Seaview is designed to bring passengers closer to the sea,” said UK managing director Antonio Paradiso. “Almost three-quarters of cabins have balconies, there is an outdoor buffet and booths on the deck sell snacks.” There is also a large Yacht Club – an exclusive ship within a ship area that has featured on every new MSC ship since Fantasia launched in 2008, but which Paradiso dubbed “our best kept secret in the UK”.

They will feature in MSC’s first-ever TV ads in the UK, which Paradiso is planning to run in the lead up to the launch of the next newbie, MSC Bellissima, which is being named in Southampton on March 2. SHIP SHAPE MSC Seaview Built: 2018 Class: Seaside Decks: 20

Capacity: 4,132 (double); 5,331 (maximum)

A none-too-flattering Miamicondo look on the outside hides a fabulously glitzy interior packed with restaurants, bars and activities for all ages. “The UK accounts for about seven per cent of MSC’s bookings. I want to get that to 10 per cent,” he said Seaview is seriously glitzy, with sparkling Swarovski staircases, a stunning four-deck-high atrium

with a stage above the bar for live bands and huge LED screens that show everything from cityscapes to toothy sharks. There’s a new fish restaurant, Ocean Cay, which has been opened in partnership with Spanish two Michelin star chef Ramon Freixa and the Asian market kitchen (part sushi, teppanyaki, part pan-Asian) that debuted on MSC Seaside. They cost extra, as does my favourite, the French L’Atelier Bistrot. The play areas for babies and children, as well as separate teen hang-outs for 12 to 14 and 15 to 17-year-olds, are really impressive, but I suspect youngsters will prefer zapping aliens in the 4D cinema, racing on a F1 simulator, sliding down the water slides in the jungle-themed adventure park or taking on the longest zipline at sea – 105m, about the same length as a football pitch. A head for heights is a must. RECIPE

In the galley

The best recipes at sea. This month an indulgent and delicious Beef Wellington with Duchess potatoes and Bordelaise sauce courtesy of Princess Cruises

Ingredients 1.3kg beef tenderloin, trimmed Oil for searing Salt and pepper

1/2 cup double cream 5 tablespoons butter 2 egg yolks Salt & pepper

2 frozen puff pastry sheets 1 whole egg

Method Season the tenderloin and sear in a very hot pan on all sides. Set aside. Place all of the ingredients for the duxelles in a food processor and mince. Transfer the mix to a large sautĂŠ pan and cook over a moderate heat until the majority of the water has evaporated so the duxelles is wet, but not runny. Season well. Preheat the oven to 250C. Lay the puff pastry sheets out on a floured surface putting the ends together to form one long sheet. Spread the duxelles over the pastry. Place the tenderloin in the centre and roll it up so that the duxelles surrounds the tenderloin. Seal the edges well and place the Wellington on a greased baking tray. Use a pastry brush to coat the Wellington evenly with beaten egg. Place the Wellington in the oven

Duxelles 680g button mushrooms 2/3 cup onion 3/4 cup breadcrumbs 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Salt and pepper Bordelaise sauce 2 cups red wine 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 9 black peppercorns 1/4 cup mushroom stems and pieces 4 cups demi-glace Duchess potatoes 1.5kg russet potatoes, cut into chunks

and bake for 40 minutes for medium rare. Remove the Wellington and let rest for five minutes before slicing. Place the wine, thyme, bay leaf, peppercorns and mushrooms in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer until it has reduced by half. Add the demi-glace and reduce by one-third or until the sauce will coat a spoon. Adjust seasoning and strain the sauce. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and add salt. Boil until tender when pierced with a knife. Drain. Transfer potatoes to a large bowl and mash until smooth and free of lumps. Add cream, butter, egg yolks and salt and pepper. Mix well. Line two baking sheets with parchment. Spoon potato mixture into a pastry bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe swirled mounds about 5cm in diameter. Bake until tops are lightly browned, about 20 to 25 minutes. Use a serrated bread knife to slice the Wellington. Serve with the potatoes and bordelaise sauce. CRUISE-ADVISER.COM

FINAL WORD

Why we need a third runway at Heathrow Despite last month’s vote by MPs, the expansion of Heathrow faces further obstacles. But, says Sam Ballard, it has to happen for the prosperity of post-Brexit Britain Late last month, in the latest stage of the ongoing saga that is the UK’s airport expansion, MPs approved a bill that paves the way for Heathrow Airport to get its third runway. Cue the popping of champagne corks and much merriment. However, the path to expansion is unlikely to have tackled its last obstacle. Almost immediately after approval was given, Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, issued a statement saying that he would be mounting a legal challenge – arguing that Gatwick was a more logical place for expansion. Greenpeace said they would be joining him. But why is the Heathrow expansion such a controversial subject? Let’s look at the figures. Around 78 million people use Heathrow Airport every year. The airport claims it is operating at almost 100 per cent capacity. The third runway – which would cost around £14 billion and be paid

for privately – would be a massive infrastructure project, involving small matters like tunnelling off part of London’s orbital motorway, the M25, and building a sixth terminal. Economically, the decision not to expand Heathrow could have potentially disastrous effects, especially after Brexit. Lord Adonis, the government’s former infrastructure tsar, made the point recently that if Heathrow isn’t expanded new routes to emerging markets won’t be picked up by London’s other airports, such as Gatwick or Stansted, but instead by Europe’s other leading hubs, such as Amsterdam’s Schiphol or Paris’ Charles de Gaulle. This should be a real concern for the government. In a post-Brexit Britain the UK will no longer be seen as the gateway to the EU. If the Heathrow expansion doesn’t go ahead, the UK could be reduced to

a feeder airport for Europe’s major cities. London needs a world class airport to help bolster the UK’s appeal. Big infrastructure projects like Crossrail will also help access into central London and ease congestion. The issue of London airport expansion is a political minefield. Residents living under Heathrow’s flightpath are unsurprisingly against the idea, as are their MPs. Also, depending on where the political climate lies at the time, are the various parties in opposition. Appetite within governments themselves largely depends on how close we are to a general election. On top of all this, the clock is ticking. If things don’t progress, the Department for Transport has said that London’s airports will reach full capacity by 2034. If Britain wants to keep up in a post-Brexit world then Heathrow Airport has to get its third runway.
