Ex-UK 2016
There’s something special about an ex-UK cruise. Not only is it one of the most relaxing and convenient ways to travel (who wants to be stuck in an airport lounge when you could be on deck with a cocktail?), it also manages to feel both quaint and adventurous at the same time. There are cruise lines that have tapped into this market brilliantly, and truly perfected the ex-UK holiday. Not least among these is Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which takes our cover feature (p12), with its fantastic sailing from Tilbury — just 40 minutes from London — to Copenhagen and back. We take an in-depth look at Cunard (p27), one of the most historic cruise lines in the world, and how its ex-UK sailings continue to combine classic and modern travel, while we chat to Paul Ludlow from P&O Cruises — which launched Britannia, the largest cruise ship ever built for the UK market, in 2015 — on p8. But, while these lines are flying the flag for the ex-UK market, 2016 will see great change, some positive, some negative. For example, MSC Cruises has returned to the market, but Holland America Line has left. Harwich cruise port has gone from more than 30 cruise departures in 2015 to just five this year, while many other ports have seen departure numbers drop. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of choice for your customers, as our How To guide (p30), which takes a regional look at cruise departures, and our extensive Port Listings (p45) and Directory (p57) prove. This Ex-UK guide also hopes to encourage you to think outside the box: we look at pre- and post-cruise packages on p23 and how, with Eurostar, cruises on Europe’s magnificent rivers fall firmly in the no-fly category (p19). Remember to look out for great competitions in the coming weeks — we hope you enjoy reading. JANUARY 2016

ruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) is a company with ambition. Having been founded less than 10 years ago — as what was then a charter business — it has grown exponentially. It now operates a fleet of four ships (Marco Polo, Astor, Astoria and Magellan) as well as its relatively new river cruise division, CMV Signature. This, along with a burgeoning trade sales team, really do show that the firm is heading full steam ahead. While operating far and wide — with a particular emphasis on Australia — it is first and foremost an exUK operator, specialising in regional departures. It is bigger and newer than its last flagship, Marco Polo, and offers guests something a little different while still being on brand. Formerly the Grand Holiday, a ship catering for the Spanish family market and operated by Iberocruises, it has needed some reworking for the CMV customer. The best example of this is the former kids’ pool, at the back of the ship, which has been fitted with artificial turf and decorated with garden furniture. It’s not a million miles away from

INTERVIEW
Paul Ludlow, the new senior vice-president, sales and marketing at P&O Cruises, chats to cruise adviser about the impact of Britannia and the ex-UK market’s huge potential
L
ast year was a busy one for P&O Cruises. Not only did the cruise line launch its new flagship, Britannia, the largest vessel ever built for the UK market, with the Queen as its godmother, it also underwent several staff changes as part of a wider restructure at Carnival UK, its parent company. The headline news was that Paul Ludlow, a Carnival veteran of 16 years, had returned to P&O Cruises, after six years working at sister band Princess Cruises, to take up the role of senior vice-president, sales and marketing. “With Britannia having launched just last year, there’s a real buzz around the place,” he tells cruise adviser. Here he discusses the

enduring importance of travel agents and how the “yet to cruise” UK market has the potential for “exponential growth”. cruise adviser:
How do you attract new to cruise customers? One thing is television advertising — we’ve now developed a great relationship with Rob Brydon [who appears in the line’s ‘This is the Life’ adverts]. I think people really empathise with Rob; when he’s enjoying himself on our holidays, I think they can see themselves in his place. We’ve also taken out a lot of the jargon that used to be associated with cruise holidays, and we’ve really worked with our travel agent partners to give them better tools and more comprehensive information, so they can answer customers’ questions. It’s really a combination of doing all those things, opening people’s eyes to cruise. I think once they do, they can see the value it represents. How much room for growth is there in the ex-UK market? There’s huge room for growth. We spend a lot of time surveying the ‘yetto-cruise’ passengers, as we refer to them. We don’t talk about people who haven’t cruised —
we talk about people who are yet to cruise. We look at a number of a different ‘lenses’ of the UK population, whether it be the ability to buy a certain product over a certain price, or, say, time available to them to take a cruise. When we look at that there are literally millions of people in the UK market who are yet to cruise. The market has huge potential. We are still only getting started with the number of people who are going to cruise in the next few years. Is this growth reliant on new ships and thus greater capacity? What the cruise lines are increasingly doing better is differentiating their products. When you take one brand versus another, it’s become much clearer to customers about what each of those brands offer. I think as long as we, and our competitors, continue to differentiate, the market can expand exponentially. Everyone is different; one cruise passenger is not the same as the next. If we group them as one homogenous group, with all the same tastes and interests, we won’t expand the market as well as we could do. If we can appeal to individuality, we will expand the market even more.

OPINION TITLE
Britannia, with the striking, 308ft Union Flag on its bow
Is the ex-UK market too heavily weighted towards the south? No – and the reason I don’t think so is because Southampton is one of the best cities in the UK in terms of access, whether people take trains or drive or even fly — as we’re increasingly seeing some of our northern cruise passengers do. Southampton is also an incredibly efficient port, which really does help people with their journey arrangements, and there are few other ports around the country that have reached the same level of capacity opportunity that Southampton offers us at the moment. We are always looking at this stuff — but we do really respond to our guests’ feedback and at the moment they are telling us it works for them.
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
How important is the trade to P&O Cruises? It’s incredibly important. The vast majority of our bookings come through our trade partners. Since my short time in the role, I’ve expressed several times the importance of the trade. One of the first moves I made was to appoint Alex White who very successfully led sales efforts for Princess Cruises with our travel trade partners, and really strengthened Princesses’ partnership with the trade. I have brought Alex in to do that same work and evolve it for P&O Cruises. How can agents find out more? Many ways. We’ve got our team, who they can speak to, we can go visit them or speak to them on the phone, whatever their preference might be.
We also have a number of online tools, such as completecruisesolution. com. We’ve done a series of webinars, and we also do ship visits, and an online training journey, on our academy. The list is extensive! We want agents to tell us what they need and we’ll serve them however they choose. What impact has Britannia had so far? It has really evolved the P&O Cruises’ brand. There are many things that we’ve done on Britannia that we’d never done before, such as the cookery school, led by James Martin, to give just one example. It’s enabling us to offer options to our guests that we’ve never had before. It’s been very well received — it gives us a great platform for the future.

We docked in the Dutch capital the following day and walked two minutes from the ship onto a canal boat for our tour of the city. Amsterdam is beautiful and we urge anyone who has not been before to go: it has more canals than Venice, while the narrow houses that line the waterside are often more than 300 years old. The waterways are far busier than those of the UK, with houseboats dotted along the canals. Many locals take advantage of a warm afternoon by taking their own boats out and spend a day on the water, with a few cold beers on board. The tour, which was organised by the Blue Boat Company, was excellent. With our guide offering an informative and funny history of the city. of the Rijksmuseum, where we spent the rest of our day in the company of Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh. After burning through our shoe leather (and our breakfast) we headed out on our own steam, to eat at a Dutch café, Singel 404. The canal-side eatery is renowned for serving up the best sandwiches in Amsterdam and they didn’t do their reputation any harm on our visit. The following day we docked in the German city of Hamburg, which lies on the banks of the Elbe River. Our day would consist of three parts: a walking tour of the Unesco world heritage warehouse area, an open-top bus tour of the rest of the city and an evening excursion around The Beatles’ old haunts, in the city’s seedy Red Light District, St Pauli. Hamburg’s docks are an area in transition. The city has been an important trading post for centuries, and now has the largest container port in the northern hemisphere. The vast brick warehouses that dominate much of the landscape — the biggest bonded warehouse complex in the world — are now filled with creative start-ups and small businesses. Around them, however, are huge swathes of wasteland that, in time, will become part of the new city, which they hope will be populated by 50,000 new residents.
15
CMV But, it wasn’t until the bus tour of the city, beyond the deserted docks which promise a great future, that we saw what felt like the real, vibrant Hamburg of the present. Around the lakes, past the mansions that belong to the Niveas and Klitchkos, and the five Lutheran churches that dominate its landscape. We spent our evening in the company of Stefanie Hempl’s Magical Musical Tour. The walk, which centred on St Pauli’s Reperbahn takes us to the places where The Beatles — then a five-piece — spent their formative years. Here, between 1960 and 1962 the young band played more shows as The Beatles than in any other city in the world. They honed their craft — and met a certain Ringo Starr — before returning to Liverpool. After a day at sea we arrive in Helsingborg, the beautiful city that sits on the Swedish side of the narrow strait that separates Sweden and Denmark. Having been a contested region for centuries, it now boasts a number of tourist attractions that draw in people from around Sweden and far further afield, including Sofiero Palace, the former summer residence of the Swedish royal family. The palace itself has a relaxed feel to it, which is in keeping with the more informal attitude that Scandinavians have towards their royal families. The princess who
16
renovated the palace — Princess Sofia — was known for her green fingers, and it is the gardens themselves that are the most impressive aspect of Sofiero. During the early summer 10,000 rhododendrons are in bloom. The restaurant, which is part of the former palace itself, looks out across the water onto the Oresund. You can see Denmark across the sea. In the evening we sail across the Oresund to Copenhagen. The capital of Denmark is one of the most popular cruise calls in the region and for good reason too, like most major cities it has something for everyone. From the fairytales of Hans Christian Anderson, whose name is splashed all over the city, to modern areas such as the Meat Packing District and Christiana, an anarchist republic on an old air force base. We start our day bright and early with a rickshaw ride around the major sites. The famous statue of the little mermaid is only a few hundred metres away from where our ship is berthed and we get there before the crowds surround her little island. The statue’s appeal is such that it was loaned to Shanghai in 2010 for the World Expo. After that we are taken past the Churchill Gardens and stop in Amalienborg, a large square that is home to four palaces occupied by the Danish royal family. It’s
the poshest cul-de-sac you are ever likely to see and one of the finest examples of Danish Rococco architecture in existence. Our rickshaw ride ends at the food market near Norreport station. Here we are treated to two hours of tasting the local fare brought to market by specialist sellers from regions around Denmark. We taste honey made in the botanical gardens around the corner, liquorice from the Danish island of Bornholm as well as local cheeses, meats and wines. Our day also includes a visit to the second oldest theme park in the world: Tivoli Gardens. It has rides, bars and stages for what seems to be a predominantly foreign crowd. We are swept up in the throngs of merrymakers and soon decide to make our exit and walk up the Vesterbrogade road, to see the city’s emerging Meatpacking District. The area, which is centred around a former Bosch showroom, now houses new restaurants and bars in and around the abattoirs, many of which are still in business. It’s a great area that offers something a little different from the major tourism attractions. The final call of our Scandinavian adventure is a big deal for CMV. However, it’s an even bigger day for the city of Aalborg. The northern Danish port, once a shipbuilding mecca, hit

the peak of its powers 30 years ago with the construction of the Grand Holiday, which is now sailing under CMV’s colours as Magellan. Back in 1985 it was the jewel in Carnival’s crown. It was the largest ship that the line operated until the introduction of its Fantasyclass in 1990. A statistic that puts the development of the cruise industry into some perspective. Magellan carries about 1,250 passengers across its 726 cabins. It represents a huge step forward for CMV, increasing its capacity by about 40 per cent. It also further diversifies its offering — allowing it to take the much-loved Marco Polo out to the UK’s regional ports, and bringing Magellan into Tilbury. In the morning we are whisked off to receive the honour of being welcomed into the Christian IV guild. After a short drive we are led into the oldest building in Aalborg, the Jens Bang’s
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
Stone House where we are sat at tables surrounding an empty head table. The elders of the guild walk in, wearing full ceremonial dress, and we are unsure what to expect. However, what follows is an hour of pure theatre. The nine elderly gentlemen sit down and read their rules and commence to rib and wisecrack at their own expense as we are immediately put at ease. We drink aquavit (the local liquor of choice), eat sausages and are given the key to the city. After our initiation we are taken to Lindholm, a local Viking burial site, where we are taught about burial rituals, farming communities and the grizzly fate that was left to Viking slaves (many skeletons were found buried with a smaller headless skeleton). After our tour we meet Jesper Lynge, a chef and storyteller who cooks us up a storm by the burial site
and recounts some of his favourite Viking yarns. As we head back to the ship, I’m reminded that a lot of travel agents we have spoken with recently have told me how much success they are having selling CMV. With a new ship and new brand launches happening in recent years, it is taking on its sector with ever louder enthusiasm. The three-star, ex-UK market is a huge area within the British cruise industry, and because it doesn’t have dodgems, ice skating rinks or vertical waterslides, it can often be neglected by the press. However, having been a regular guest with CMV over the years, it is clear that when it comes to serving the cruise market outside of Southampton, it is among the best at what it does. Its loyal following — both agent and passenger alike – have certainly proved that they have a place in this industry. See Directory, p65

T
here are many reasons why people choose to take an ex-UK cruise — but the most common one we’ve heard is that they avoid airports altogether. Some passengers simply don’t want the hassle of flying; others are unable to fly at all. But staying grounded doesn’t totally limit travel options or mean lengthy, complicated journeys as some would have you believe. Not only are there several hundred cruise departures from UK ports in 2016 (see our extensive listings, p45), there are many more European river cruises that can be reached without boarding a plane. While ex-UK cruises, of course, refer to itineraries that depart from UK ports, it seems an oversight to ignore the ever-growing river cruise market when you have a customer

looking for a no-fly option. Paris is just over two hours from London St Pancras International on the high-speed Eurostar, as is Brussels, where Thalys trains go on to Amsterdam (excitingly, as of 2017, a direct train will run between London and the Dutch capital). The company’s additional stops make things easier still. In Kent, there are Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International stations, as well as CalaisFréthun and Lille-Europe across the English Channel, offering connecting trains at each point. Indeed, Europe’s vast network of railway lines and waterways combine to allow travellers enormous freedom to explore the entire continent, from cities to villages and vineyards. Whether your customers want an extended holiday or a short Parisian getaway
with a river cruise included, the Eurostar has made things very easy indeed.
London links St Pancras International, which combines a striking red-brick Victorian façade with impressive modern interiors, renovated to the cost of £800million in 2007, is fantastic place to begin an adventure. Holidaymakers can be in Paris, at the Gare du Nord station, in just two hours and 17 minutes. For those living in and around London, in Kent, or even further afield, it’s a no brainer when compared with air travel. In the time it would take to check in, shuffle through security and board an aeroplane, you could have arrived and already be indulging in a bit of Parisian café culture. Of course, the French capital isn’t somewhere you want to be leaving in a hurry, so before your thoughts turn to the Seine, which snakes through the city, it’s worth looking at pre and post stays (remember, London, too, shouldn’t simply be seen as somewhere to depart from, especially for those travelling from farther afield — see p23). But while the Seine doesn’t offer as many itineraries as the Danube or Rhine (see below), it does offer the unmissable chance to see Paris, perhaps the world’s prettiest city, from the water, as well as trips that include stops at Claude

Monet’s garden at Giverny and the palace and grounds of Versailles. Tauck, for example, offers a 14-night trip that starts and ends in London, taking in Paris and the above, as well as Rouen and Aubers-sur-Oise on theSeine, as well as a visit to the beaches of Normandy. Avalon Waterways also promotes train travel with its eightday Paris to Paris Seine cruise, which also offers an excursion to the Normandy beaches, while its extended 11-day cruise comes with three nights in London at the end. Of course, given Europe’s excellent network of railways — which stretch beyond the continent itself

— customers can head where they want. But for those looking to take a river cruise, Amsterdam is the place to be. While a direct train is still a year away, the journey (which takes four hours and 44 minutes with a connection in Brussels) is worth it for those who don’t want to fly. There are any number of itineraries, many of which begin and end in Amsterdam, making the return simple. Viking River Cruises, for example, offers a 10-day Tulips & Windmills cruise, which takes in the lively Dutch capital and Kinderdijk as well as Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges in Belgium. Similarly, Riviera Travel has its Amsterdam,
Volendam & the Dutch Bulbfields River Cruise, which includes a canal tour in Amsterdam and then a visit to Keukenhof Park, the 19th-century tulip park, which is as expansive as it is beautiful. On some itineraries, the line also offers customers supplemented travel from regional stations to St Pancras. One great option is the Rhine & Moselle cruise. Riviera Travel offers a coach transfer from Brussels, where the Eurostar arrives, over the border to Germany, where the cruise begins. PRE AND POST
T
he pre or post-stay makes perfect sense when a cruise begins or ends in the likes of Rome or Venice. Even with a stopover, customers will know there is more to see and do than could possibly be squeezed into a day or two. The temptation to extend a holiday can be overwhelming when you’re faced with such beauty, history and culture. But what about ex-UK cruises? Aside from being closer and more familiar, do Dover, Southampton and the like hold enough allure to make customers want to bookend a trip with stays there? Is there enough to keep them entertained? The truth is it depends how you frame the question. True, there is no coliseum on the south coast: but
there is considerable beauty to be found — from Winchester to the white cliffs of Dover. And there is plenty to do. Thinking slightly outside the box can help you reap the rewards in commission: your customer could spend a spa day in Hampshire before sailing from Southampton, explore the coast at Dover or take in a show in the West End of London before hopping on a train to Tilbury the next morning. Customers travelling long distance to the south of England — where most of the cruise departures are weighted — will often want to travel down the evening before to avoid a red-eye early-morning drive or train journey. So why not try to convince them to make the most of their extra
night and try something a little different?
City break Greenwich cruise terminal is still under construction, but there are a handful cruise departures that leave from London. But with south coast departures it can still be the focal point of a preor post-cruise stay. By train, the capital is an hour and a half from Southampton and Dover, 40 minutes from Tilbury and two hours from both Paris and Brussels on the Eurostar (see p19). The obvious suggestion is a West End show, but London is a veritable collection of great bars, restaurants and tourist spots. Although notoriously expensive, most of its galleries, museums and most famous sights are free.

Another option is Winchester, just 13 miles from Southampton. The city’s Holiday Inn (at the end of A34 and just off the M3) is five minutes from the centre, and offers a Park and Cruise package from £185 per room, per night (based on two people sharing) with breakfast, and transfer to the docks. customer is heading to a port anyway, it would be a shame not to enjoy the seaside for a day before or after departure. With the likes of The Dover Marina Hotel — which is on the coast and just 15 minutes’ walk from the port — customers can take in the South Foreland lighthouse and Dover castle.
Spa relaxation Sea view With many ex-UK cruises heading to the sun-kissed, crumbling cities of the Adriatic, or the majestic Norwegian fjords, it’s easy to dismiss the English coast as second best. But there is some stunning scenery on these shores, as anyone who has ever walked Dover’s magnificent white cliffs (pictured left) can attest. Indeed, if your
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
Your customers may not necessarily want to explore Southampton or Harwich for a day or two before jumping on a cruise ship, but ask them how they would feel about an extra day of relaxation pre- or post-cruise and, chances are, they would be pretty keen. Hampshire, in particularly, is blessed with luxury country houses with spectacular spa
facilities. For example, Chilworth Manor Hotel, which is just five miles from Southampton, offers an ozone cleansed pool, sauna and steam room, gym and beauty treatment suite.
Euro trip With Paris and Brussels directly connected to London St Pancras, we believe European river cruises can be considered the equivalent of ex-UK departures (see p19), opening up hundreds of options for airport-shy travellers. The French capital is a city to luxuriate in, where customers will want to indulge in its unbeatable food and culture, like a true Parisian. Explore hotel deals for those thinking of cruising on the Seine or heading on a wider adventure.

unard has been carrying guests across the Atlantic since July 1840 when its first ship, Britannia, set sail from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia. But even as commercial airlines turned the journey from days to hours, Cunard has maintained an unbroken link between the two continents for 176 years. While much has changed since the ‘golden era’ of ocean liners, Cunard keeps one foot firmly in the past, from its décor to black-tie dress code and jazz-themed nights — even in an age when its luxury cruises serve destinations all over the world. Here, Cunard’s own historian, Michael Gallagher, chats to cruise adviser about

why the line’s past continues to inform its future. cruise adviser:
What sets Cunard apart from the pack? Michael Gallagher: I do think the company has a unique history — it has been around for so long. Cunard has had such an impact on people’s lives over the century. The lives and aspirations of millions of people around the world have depended on Cunard since 1840, including the two and half million immigrants who went off to America for a new life. War records show that the company has answered the country’s call in every war from the Crimea all the way up to the first Gulf war. The ports of Liverpool
and Boston and New York grew substantially because of Cunard, and it was a Cunard ship that rescued all the survivors from the Titanic. Also, since 1840, this transatlantic link between England and America has never broken. Cunard has managed to retain a ‘golden era’ feel, but how important has its ability to adapt been? We’ve had to adapt many times. The ships themselves are ocean liner in design, look and feel, although we’ve had to tweak the dress code over the years to appeal to a younger market. Everything changes; food changes, and the entertainment has had to change over the years. The fact that aeroplanes
CRUISE-ADVISER.COM
INFOCUS took over the transatlantic routes meant the company had to adapt to cruising. The company has changed according to circumstance and made those transitions ever so successfully [and at the same time innovated]. It was Cunard that invented the world cruise in 1972, Cunard cruised to Cuba in the 1920s; during prohibition we had booze cruises. Tell us about Cunard’s transatlantic cruises. The Atlantic is ours, really. No one else offers this regular transatlantic service, it’s seen as uniquely Cunard and it remains Cunard’s birthright. [The entertainment] is incredibly important and it’s what people come to expect, as well. That’s why we put an emphasis on our masquerade and Royal Ascot balls [among others]. Our signature ballroom on each of the ships is called the Queen’s Room, and has the biggest dancefloor at sea. There are still people who won’t fly across the Atlantic or people who want this a grand experience, a lot of people like the sea days. We get a lot of people who go from Southampton to New York and back, people who will only spend a few hours in New York. Others stay and come back much later or fly back. Sailing into New York, it’s always first thing in the morning as the city is just coming alive. It’s unusual

he south coast of England is where ex-UK cruises really start to come into their own. With destinations such as the Canaries, France and the Mediterranean within a few days sail, it’s not surprising that its popularity has grown. While Southampton has firmly ensconced itself as the country’s cruise capital, Dover and Portsmouth are among two of the busiest cruise ports in the country. While not included in our selection below, both Princess and Voyages to Antiquity are operating cruises out of Dover in 2016. So make sure you have a thorough look when you are researching the perfect ex-UK cruise for your client.

ruises from the UK’s eastern seaboard are something of a rarity in 2016. Harwich, which last year boasted more than 30 turnaround days, lost the business of Holland America Line, which halted all ex-UK departures, and Royal Caribbean International, which has dedicated itself to Southampton. This year it has just five cruises. However, three ex-UK specialists do still operate from the east: Cruise & Maritime, which has four departures from Hull, Voyages of Discovery and Fred Olsen. But beware, none of these three cruise lines advertise as a family-friendly company. These cruises are strictly for adults only.

ruises from London are always going to grab people’s attention. The capital may not be the force it once was in the maritime world but by boasting both Tilbury and Tower Bridge as potential starting points for a cruise – and with a third, at Greenwich, on its way – chances are that it will be commanding more and more departures in the future. A typical rule of thumb is that Tower Bridge (in central London) is the playground of luxury ships, however in 2016 ultra-luxury cruise line Crystal has bucked that trend by opting to use Tilbury for all of its ex-UK departures.
Line: Crystal Cruises Departure port: London Tilbury Departure date: July 23, 2016 Destination: Round Britain Duration: 14 days Ship: Crystal Symphony Single price from: £5,624 Double price from: £4,207 (oceanview, per person)

cotland’s ports offer a wealth of cruise departures, from Edinburgh’s Leith and Rosyth to Glasgow’s Greenock, Dundee and the smaller ports to the north. Its departures are usually aimed at either British Isles or Norwegian fjords, with passengers on the latter being able to cut their journey time down by a considerable margin. However, that’s not to say that you can’t find cruises further afield if you take a look, as our examples below highlight.

f you live in the north of England and want to take a cruise from a neaby port your options are fairly (although not completely) limited. Given that it is quicker to drive to a Scottish port than it is to Southampton, really it depends on where your client wants to go. Below we have selected three cruises from Newcastle and Liverpool that show just where you can travel to. However, neither Cruise & Maritime or Fred Olsen markets themselves as a family cruise line. So, while the destinations themselves are varied, families need not apply.

EXPERT CRUISE FINDER
Damian Gevertz, the founder of Widgety, talks cruise adviser through the newly launched Expert Cruise Finder, which promises to make travel agents’ lives easier
I
t has long been a widely known fact — albeit for a long unsolved problem — that searching for the perfect itinerary is a major issue for travel agents. How do you work your way through the hundreds of cruise lines, regions and months, weeks and days of the year while still feeding the latest pricing back to your clients? That’s before you even take into account the number of restaurants, the type of cuisine, style of rooms, and whether the kids’ facilities and spa are up to scratch. That is, until now. The recently launched Expert Cruise Finder — powered by Net Effect, Choosing Cruising and Widgety — aims to change all of that, and make travel agents’ lives a whole lot easier in the process. We sat down with Damian Gevertz, the founder of Widgety to find out more.
cruise adviser:
Talk us through the new product. Damian Gevertz: The collaboration between NetEffect, Choosing Cruising and Widgety is a new type of enquiry based cruise search, which merges together each company’s strongest products to provide a global, hasslefree solution for travel agents looking for the best option for their client.
44
Why is it going to make travel agents’ lives easier? The new cruise search is going to give agents a fast search for any ocean or river cruise. That includes pricing. The flexibility of the search, its speed are also key factors. There is also no minimum solution. An agent can take as much or as little as they like from the content to either complement what they already have, or to build a new solution from scratch. It is easy to implement and works across any platform and is very flexible. How do agents sign up to it? We are working to upgrade more than 400 existing clients that the group has between them. Those who are not included in this number, can either call us or get a demo at expertcruisefinder.co.uk
What does it offer that is currently unavailable on the market? The Expert Cruise Finder is a new way of searching for cruise. Current searches are always limited to ship, place or date. We offer great content about the ships themselves. So a family looking for a two week Mediterranean cruise in June, with great kids’ facilities, will get exactly what they are looking for, which isn’t always the easiest thing to find. Can you tell us your plans for how the system will be added to/improved in the coming months? We will be adding to the search flexibility in the coming months as well as uploading a huge, very visual and exciting destinations database to the system, plus lots more. Cruise & Maritime Voyages is a specialist in traditional no-fly cruising holidays and is one of Britain’s few remaining independently owned cruise lines. Its smaller, more intimate fleet of four classic ships offer a more leisurely and traditional home from home country house style of cruising with the emphasis very much on personal service and going that extra mile. That’s why more than 40 per cent of CMV’s passengers cruise with it again and again and why more than 95 per cent of its guests are satisfied and enjoy their cruising experience. 2016 heralds CMV’s seventh year of operation.
