DEAR WORLD LEADERSHIP AWARDS GUESTS, Welcome to the New Look Foundation’s inaugural World Leadership Awards. Thank you all for your support of youth as global leaders. Young people represent nearly half of the world’s population and they are quite possibly the greatest asset our communities have now and for the future. Young people are and have always been the leaders of important changes that occur in our society. Every great movement, every fight for justice, and every spark of innovation has been started by young people. To ensure we—as a community—continue to see progress it is essential to invest in today’s youth. The individuals and organizations we are honoring tonight recognize and value youth leadership. We are humbled to recognize them as partners as well as giants in our field. People like Michelle Nunn, Hital Muraj and President William J. Clinton represent the local, national and international pioneers who have inspired our work and set the course for our collective success. By being here tonight, you demonstrate your recognition and support for the beliefs which I embraced when I founded the New Look Foundation in 1999. Without the tools, resources and support, not only will we deny youth opportunities for growth, but all of us will miss the opportunity to find truth in the pursuit of change. That is why supporting New Look’s work must be a piece of the puzzle to improve communities. New Look understands that youth are not merely leaders in waiting; they are ready to achieve greatness today. Over the past 11 years, New Look has refined its work to provide young leaders with a unique mix of talent development, business skills training, service opportunities and educational support. Providing training, mentorship and experiences in these areas has led to the astounding successes of the New Look Foundation.
This purposeful combination of supports has led to James Harris, New Look’s first youth member of the Board of Directors, to turn away from a life of gangs and violence and embrace a world of education, service and leadership. And, is the reason Chantia Robinson discovered that she not only had talent as a dancer, but she had a calling as a civic leader. It is tremendous to know that every year New Look mentors hundreds of youth who go on to mobilize thousands of their peers as global leaders. They are the 10% that will go on to lead 90% of their generation. As New Look grows, I am continually impressed by the impact our youth have in their communities and around the world. I hope that tonight is just the beginning of your involvement with us, and you too will have a chance to meet, mentor and support some of these leaders. While New Look will always recognize the success and achievement of our youth first, it is also important to recognize that this work would not be possible without the unending support of New Look’s Board of Directors and the tireless passion and commitment of our staff. In order to support more amazing leaders like James and Chantia, we must ensure the growth and sustainability of this incredible team and organization. Your generous support and belief in the power of young people allows New Look to fulfill its bold vision. As we reflect on world leadership tonight, I hope you share my confidence that the future is full of hope and promise. The youth of this generation have embraced their true power and potential as global leaders and I am certain that we are in good hands.
Thank you again for joining us tonight as we celebrate these remarkable leaders!
Yours In Service
USHER RAYMOND IV
− DEAR Friends, Thank you all for joining us at the inaugural World Leadership Awards. By being here tonight, you are demonstrating commitment and generosity to the world’s youth. As we celebrate the accomplishments of these young people, we would like you to remember that there is still much work to be done. Supporting young people and their opportunities to grow and develop as leaders is extremely important. Knowing that so many youth around the world are faced with difficult circumstances and hard choices, it fills us with hope to know that organizations like the New Look Foundation are training young men and women to be leaders in their communities. The New Look Foundation has a unique approach and an outstanding track record for allowing young people to succeed as leaders and change agents. The World Leadership Awards gives us an opportunity to join together as a community to demonstrate support. In the room tonight we are joined by business leaders, philanthropists, artists, activists and, most importantly, young people. We all have a role to play to ensure that this generation is prepared to be the leaders of today and tomorrow. Please take this time to learn more about the New Look Foundation. We trust that this is only the beginning of your support for its vision and mission.
Sincerely,
CAMMIE & JOHN RICE

− EW THE N LOOKDATION’S FOUNAL GLOBERS IN LEAD N ACTIO
James Harris, age 20, from Kansas City, KS, has led Powered By Service projects on malaria prevention and gang awareness. Because of New Look he is a peer role model, non-profit board member, international traveler, college student and successful entrepreneur. Nyea Garner, age 16, from New York, NY used a Powered By Service grant to start her own organization—The Evolutionary Movement to give youth a space to learn and practice performing arts. She is in New Look’s Moguls In Training program learning about strategic philanthropy, peer training and mobilization, and social change.
Kimberly McMillan, age 18, from New Orleans, LA was inspired by New Look’s call to action after the Haiti Earthquake to lead a Powered By Service project to raise recovery funds. Kimberly has explored her talent and leadership as a singer through New Look and is currently traveling abroad as a gospel singer. The EcoRyders, led by Victor Davila of the Bronx, New York are passionate about educating their community about environmental dangers, the prevalence of asthma, and the need for more health and fitness. They used a Powered By Service grant and the allure of skateboarding to train over 30 youth in community gardening, environmental justice and, of course, skateboard riding and design.
New Look alumna Philicia Roberts, age 18 of Los Angeles, CA, was disturbed by the recent budget cuts in her school. Using the business, arts and service skills she learned at New Look, she used a Powered By Service grant to organize her peers and create a documentary and awareness campaign about the dangers of budget cuts and realities of high school drop out. Misty Parks and a group of Atlanta New Look alumni were inspired by Michelle Obama’s recent call to action to prevent childhood obesity. Their response was to use a Powered By Service grant to run a skate-a-thon and physical fitness day for the community to educate people—especially younger youth—on fun and easy ways to stay active.
− UT ABO THE OREES N O H
− TH YOU LYST CATARD AWA The Youth Catalyst Award is given to a corporation or organization that is committed to breaking down or alleviating barriers to youth leadership in communities. Leading by example, this honoree provides us all with new perspectives on youth, leadership and community.
USTA The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is recognized as the first Youth Catalyst honoree for its demonstrated commitment to youth and leadership through the establishment and growth of National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL). Founded in 1969 by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell, and Sheridan Snyder, the USTA/NJTL network is a nationwide group of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. After over 40 years, NJTL has grown to reach over 250,000 youth a year across the United States. Seeing tennis as more than just a physical activity for youth, the USTA is helping youth build a foundation of leadership through personal development, mentorship, service and educational opportunities. This innovative approach to supporting young athletes has broken down barriers for these youth to use their talents and pursue new paths toward personal development and community improvement.
− L A B O L G TH YOU ERSHIP LEADRD AWA The Global Youth Leadership Award is presented to a young person who shows significant commitment and long-term potential as a leader in their community, their country, and the world. Individuals receiving this award embody the core values of New Look: service, civic engagement, business skills, education, talent and creativity.
JUSTIN BIEBER As one of the first recipients of the Global Youth Leadership Award, Justin Bieber, age 16, has embraced the responsibility of creating and inspiring good when blessed with the fortune and fame of celebrity. While probably best known as the popular teen singing sensation, Justin demonstrates all the qualities of a global youth leader and budding philanthropist through his work supporting Pencils of Promise—an organization dedicated to increasing educational opportunities in the developing world. Most recently, he is turning hundreds of thousands of his young fans into philanthropists by donating $1 to Pencils of Promise for each ticket sold to his concerts. With his early start as a philanthropist and peer mobilizer, Justin demonstrates the potential for a lifetime of service and leadership.
CHANTIA ROBINSON Chantia Robinson, age 21, is the first New Look Foundation alumna to be recognized with the Global Youth Leadership Award. An Atlanta native and recent graduate of Spelman, Chantia is on her way to Georgetown University in Washington D.C to pursue a graduate degree in Human Resources Management as well as an internship in dance and performance. While her passion for dance was the start of her path to excellence, when she joined New Look in 2005,
Chantia was quickly inspired to explore her talents as a civic leader. She became an instrumental mobilizer in New Look’s “I Can’t, But U Can” campaign which led to 126 youth mobilizing 4,000 peers to register 17,000 voters for the 2008 election. Chantia went on to be one of four youth selected to represent New Look at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration as well as complete an internship at the Library of Congress in D.C. where she gained more knowledge about politics and community. Her combined interests and success in talent, education, business and service makes her the model youth who has just begun her journey to inspire others to lead.
SUMMIT SERIES When Summit Series was founded in 2008 by a group of 20-somethings the idea was to be a mutual aid society for young, innovative entrepreneurs. Using inventive gathering strategies and fundraising efforts, the Summit Series has been able to bring together hundreds of the world’s emerging business and philanthropic leaders. In just its first two years, Summit Series has raised roughly $1.5 million for charitable organizations. One of Summit Series’ goals is to connect influential young entrepreneurs and inspire them to make socially conscious changes. The multi-sector approach and focus on young leaders personifies the values embodied in the Global Youth Leadership Award. The founders of Summit Series understand the importance of networking, continuous learning and knowledge sharing. Their efforts have helped hundreds of rising stars embrace the importance of public good, and they have only just begun. Mirroring their spirit of collaboration, rather than honoring a single individual, Summit Series becomes the first organization to receive the Global Youth Leadership Award.
− L A B O L G ASSADOR AMBOUTH OF Y RD AWA The Global Ambassador of Youth has consistently invested personal and organizational resources in young leaders around the globe. These individuals have changed the local, national and international perception of young people, guaranteeing that more people recognize the power and potential of youth leaders.
MICHELLE NUNN Michelle Nunn, CEO of Points of Light Institute and CoFounder of HandsOn Network, is honored as one of the first recipients of the Global Ambassador of Youth Award in recognition of her lifelong commitment to support youth, communities and service. Michelle began her career as the founding director of HandsOn Atlanta, a non-profit organization and now an affiliate of HandsOn Network that helps individuals, families and corporate and community groups find meaningful opportunities at nonprofits and schools. Under her leadership, HandsOn Atlanta grew from a grassroots startup in 1989 to one of the nation’s largest community-based volunteer organizations. As a Global Ambassador of Youth, Michelle has put a commitment to young people at the center of her organization creating new opportunities, resources and supports to help youth realize their full potential as leaders. Michelle’s work has inspired organizations around the globe to think more collaboratively and strategically about service and volunteerism. Michelle has been a pioneer in the world of service, youth leadership and civic engagement. She has been involved at every level of this movement and continues to redefine best practices and organizational models that lead to success.
HITAL MURAJ Hital Muraj of Cisco Networking Academy is honored as a Global Ambassador of Youth for her work supporting some of the most vulnerable, overlooked and under resourced youth in the world. In 2007, she undertook a bold effort to create an Information and Communications Technology skills training center in Kibera, Kenya. Kibera is the second largest slum in Africa and the desperately low incomes of the people living there make it an absolute necessity to support youth with skills and experiences to help break the cycle of poverty. Hital worked with the community to raise funds and donated computers to create the training center in Kibera that allows residents to enroll in Cisco’s Networking Academy IT Essentials course for free. During the first week of operation 80 students registered for Networking Academy courses. In addition to her work with Cisco, Hital contributes her own time and resources to support and highlight youth-led innovations in the Kibera community including youth-led schools, orphanages, businesses and media enterprise.
JY PARK JY Park, “JYP,” is an internationally recognized Korean pop singer and producer who has spent significant time increasing opportunities for young artists to develop as industry leaders. He demonstrates the qualities of the Global Ambassador of Youth Award by using his experience and knowledge of music and business to support new artists. He encourages them to not only excel using their talents, but also develop robust brands creating new intersections in business, philanthropy and music. JYP has a series of academies around the world where he trains the next generation of superstars. JYP has already supported the launch of artists like Rain and Wonder Girls. In addition to his work supporting young artists as a new wave of leaders, he has also been engaged in more traditional public service. JYP served as a Personal Advisor to President Lee Myung-bak for the “Future Planning Council” and launched the “I Love Asia” project, in collaboration with Jackie Chan, in the wake of the 2008 earthquake in China.
− E SERVICCY LEGARD AWA The Service Legacy Award is presented to an individual who has dedicated their life to service and community. The honoree has demonstrated significant global impact in the lives of youth, families and communities. Furthermore, he has inspired the activity of countless others to engage in service and leadership. Possessing an unwavering commitment to service and leadership, the recipient of the Service Legacy Award is a role model for all young leaders.
PRESIDENT WILLIAM J.CLINTON The 42nd President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton has led a life committed to public service. President Clinton’s accomplishments in the White House include increasing investment in education, providing tax relief for working families, helping millions of Americans move from welfare to work, expanding access to technology, encouraging investment in underserved communities, protecting the environment, countering the threat of terrorism and promoting peace and strengthening democracy around the world. His Administration’s economic policies fostered the largest peacetime economic expansion in history. Since 2001, President Clinton has dedicated himself to philanthropy and continued public service through the William J. Clinton Foundation, which is focused on finding practical and measurable solutions to address pressing challenges at home and abroad. In addition to his Foundation work, President Clinton joined with former President George H. W. Bush to help with relief and recovery following the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, and to lead a nationwide fundraising effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Following the disaster in Haiti, President Clinton joined forces with President George W. Bush to lead a fundraising effort for recovery and rebuilding. He was also named United Nations Special Envoy to Haiti. His many acts as a public servant and private citizen solidify his legacy as a global leader. He is a true role model for all aspiring leaders and the ideal recipient of the inaugural Service Legacy Award.
