The memorial garden which sits adjacent to the new Veterinary Medicine Learning Center facility is designed for contemplation and inspiration. The garden reveals various moments of surprise while maintaining a certain level of serenity as you move through each space. I was involved in both design development and construction documentation stages of the project and produced marketing and fundraising material for the client.

MLK Extension The concept proposes an extension of MLK Street in a direct line piercing through an old Industrial site to the river. The resulting aerial walkway acts as a mediator between the city, the industrial corridor, and the river by allowing people to re-inhabit the post industrial landscapes, and integrate the waterfront back into the city. By re-using and rearranging materials and plants found on the site, the design carries the dialogue between people and the history of the area. The language of mediating lines is taken from the past and currently used roads and trails from each industrial site. This helped to anchor the design and give it the unique dialogue between the past and present conditions.

Re-imaging the urban fabric The Project involved the use of various planning strategies in order that the down town of the city of Auburn, Alabama served as a catalyst to project the vision of sustainable site initiatives. Water collecting and filtering strategies through a green roof and raingardens are utilized to educate people coming and going from the parking deck to the existing shops. Molding and re-shaping the topography was key to allow these processes to become legible that transform the urban fabric into a didactic landscape.
26
Both physical sketch models and computer modeling were essential to carrying out the idea of a multifunctional building that acted as additional public green space. This new building brings an additional 16,000+ square feet of interior space that could house a cafe and bike rental shop, promoting a healthy and sustainable life style.

Plan
Transformations for the site included enhanced access to the ‘back door’ of the existing downtown, maintaining the current parking deck accessible, as well as on site water filtration strategies.
28
The new structure is used in place of existing impermeable surface, as a model for creative, multi funtional use of space. This move helps to active the space at the pedestrian scale.

Inverse Figure Ground A conventional master plan is one which looks at the landscape as one entity. This approach often ignores various aspects of individuality found within the larger context which in tern misses enormous oportunity for each site. The idea of the Inverse Figure Ground explores individual characteristics of spaces, allowing each to develop its own language. Applying a fine brush to the landscape allows each space to have its own voice which brings unity from individuality. This process disregards the traditional master plan approach that applies a broad brush of design and forces alien elements over the landscape. 30

Interstitial Spaces
Auburn University Campus Framework The design concept was developed through a series of exploratory collage drawings resulting from an analysis of interstitial spaces that make the campus of Auburn University unique. The process of collage gave me the freedom to explore various ideas within a short amount of time. The result is the master plan its self as a collage that makes legible unique qualities and characteristics from within each space. 32

Historic Waterfront
University of Arkansas Rome Center Via Portuense Arsenal Rome, Italy 2012
The ancient Parta Portese
The site exists as a connection between Trastevere and the Aventine Hill running along side the Tiber River in the ancient city of Rome. The Lungotevere is the bike path stretching parallel to the river which provides the possibility of earthwater and city-river connectivity. The Arsenale Pontificio is the eighteenth century papal arsenal found in the south west corner of the elongated site which was dedicated for the fabrication and supply of military goods. The task of re-imagining the terrain with its situational components led to utilizing those multiple elements which make it singular and specific in order to serve as the community nursery. Each of the components were studied through processual drawings of material and space that express the activity involved in the study and supply of street plant life for the area.

Toomer’s investigation into metamorphosis & evoloution Auburn, AL 2012
The project involved looking at the possibility of change to the iconic area of Toomer’s Corner, one of the main entrances to Auburn University. The two ninety year old Live Oaks served as a cultural identity to both the students and the city, as they were rolled following a winning home game. My proposal looked at allowing the iconic trees to decay while a new range of diverse species emerged. By providing a temporary structure that could would serve as protection from falling limbs and allow for continued rolling, both the ground plane and new cannopy would show change through the seasons

The project was done through an exploration of a physical model, quick hand sketches and sectional drawings describing the potential of the area. The site sits adjacent to a metal recycling shipping yard in the Pitsburg neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia. A bosque was introduced in order to create a cannopy that would provide shade for workers and pedestrians as a kind of pocket park with in an urban industrial setting. The idea of re claiming some of the recycled metal provides moments for sitting.

Arts & Music Center Civil Rights trail stop Montgomery, AL 2010
This arts & music center was proposed as an amenity to the community in which may reflect the arts that thrived during the known Civil Rights Movement as well as the local contemporary arts.. The site was chosen directly along what is unofficially marked as the trail march which took place from Selma to Montgomery Alabama and ended at the Capitol building. This urban jewel becomes part of other possible “trail stops that doesn’t simply remind its users of the tragic past, but allows them to become embeded into the rich culture e that thrives in the Capital City of Montgomery Alabama.

Relevant Work Ephemeral Openings ‘ribbon flow’ Temporary Instalation Auburn University Campus 2012
Targeting both the social and institutional entities that shape the University, the installation hovered over some 300 feet of a wide pedestrian path. Composed only of a light weight plastic table cover and fishing line, the social ribbon attracted attention through out its ten hour installation process. This piece allowed for instant re-shaping of the path and adjacent spaces and was used as a platform to question our role and interaction with the landscape. The main question and drive for the success of the project surged with colleague Matt Phillips and my self discussed the different type of barriers embodied by the institution, both physical and social.

Kitchen Renovation Cruz Residence
Albertville, Alabama 2012 Following a kitchen fire, which fortunately did not consume any major structural components of the four bedroom, two and a half bath house, both the kitchen and living room underwent through major renovations. With functionality and aesthetic as the driving components, I was able to provide a series of interior renderings as well as technical drawings that aided both the client and the general contractor in choosing materials, fixtures and color for a speedy renovation process. In order to help Mrs. Cruz cope from the unfortunate accident, the layout of the kitchen was transformed, giving it better flow and an updated, contemporary look. Among those responsibilities was a careful budgeting of materials and fixtures. Through the use of floor plans, a ceiling plan for lighting, interior elevations and computer renderings, the Cruz Residence received a new life for its residents.

Kitchen Extension Design & Construction Newbern Alabama 2010
In collaboration with the Auburn Rural Studio (Photographs provided by Rural Studio)
The Rural Studio gave me the great privilege of being involved in the project of adding to the student kitchen in what is known as the Morrisette House, head quarters of the program. The project involved two phases of design and construction that each included a group of ten to fifteen students. My role and responsibilities came at the second phase of final design and construction for the ‘Chef’s kitchen’. In a collaborative manner, I was exposed to an extensive amount of research of programmatic layout, materials, as well as some work for an inhouse vegetable garden which was realized through diagrams, sketching and drawings. I was also involved in the rigorous yet fast paced process of construction which helped me gain knowledge to various methods of construction. Though each student had individual roles, we met daily, having team discussions about design refining and final construction. The result was an elegant, yet well functional kitchen that incorporated rich materiality, sustainable design and an aesthetic that will be pleasing for the house chef.

In collaboration with Lifepoint Church Lifepoint Church Stage was a project that involved a fast paced design build approach in which both the design and construction of the project were driven by a need for aesthetic and cost effectiveness. The concept began with the idea of using recycled wood pallets in order to involve a play with light, shadow, and depth. Although the initial drawings called for stacking the wood pallets in their original form, we decided to construct our own custom 4’x8’ panels to give us the freedom of arranging the individual pallet boards. Though the boards appear to have been placed at random, each board was carefully placed in an attempt to vary in texture, size, and width. The result was a back drop rich with texture and depth that hints at the previous uses for the wood pallets. The light is carefully used in 72 order to illuminate through strategically placed slits along the wall, as well as contrasting the individuality presented by each panel.

As a recent graduate from Auburn University, I have compiled a number of selected works ranging from both Architecture and Landscape Architecture projects. This portfolio exemplifies my desire to deliver and enhance my interdisciplinary assets into a fully integrated design and to which have been applied to each project. As they vary in function and scale, knowledge from both fields enables me to work across each in order to employ innovative and thoughtful solutions that become fluid social and environmental systems.
