Preschool–Year 13

Welcome Welcome to Chilton Saint James School. We are very proud of this fine School where girls in Years 1 to 13 and both girls and boys in our co-educational Preschool are challenged and supported to achieve their very best. We are a School that values its heritage and, in 2018, will celebrate reaching the milestone of our centenary. Achievement for each student is of utmost importance. Despite our relatively small size, we continue to attain success across academic, sporting and cultural activities, both locally and nationally, and in addition to this our renowned Chilton Dance Centre provides first class opportunities for students of all ages. Jude Fawcett Principal

Schools alone cannot foster learning in students, therefore we consider our home/school partnership as top priority. We encourage parents to be part of the team in developing a passion for learning in our students, knowing that this is achieved in a caring and friendly environment where each individual feels nurtured. Students from Years 4 to 13 have their own internet capable devices allowing them to be guided by their teachers, but at the same time they have the opportunity to take some individual responsibility for their own learning. This helps develop students’ readiness for the challenges ahead in the changing world. Please come and visit Chilton and experience the creative haven where students’ curiosity is encouraged to prepare them for the future.

A creative haven Founded in 1918, Chilton Saint James School delivers a world-class education experience through a unique blend of academic learning and creative, physical and social expression. We cater for girls in Years 1 to 13 and for girls and boys in our co-educational Preschool – both located within a single, expansive campus in the heart of Lower Hutt, a mere 15 minutes from Wellington city. The world has changed a great deal since Geraldine FitzGerald established Chilton almost 100 years ago. However, her philosophy remains true today; to provide students with a stimulating environment in which to learn, and diverse experiences that help them to grow, flourish and achieve their dreams. Our goal is to create that most elusive and valuable of commodities in today’s challenging world – creativity in thought, word and deed. As a private Anglican school, Chilton offers a curriculum shaped by the demands of the modern world and underpinned by Christian values and beliefs.

Visit Chilton and you’ll see that we offer a wonderful learning environment, with expansive playing fields, an outdoor swimming pool, a combination of historic and modern buildings and plenty of space for future development. Our classrooms are well resourced and our teaching programme successfully integrates early childhood, primary and secondary education – beginning with the globally renowned International Baccalaureate (from Preschool to Year 6) and leading to compulsory and elective programmes and NCEA and Scholarship/ university-level courses for Years 7 to 13. Through academic and personal rigour, students are challenged to excel in their studies and in their personal development, and encouraged to make the most of the recreational and creative opportunities on offer.

Preschool Chilton Saint James Preschool has earned an excellent reputation for its focused and nurturing approach, and attentive and dedicated teachers. Offering a great balance of structured and free play – with specialist classes that include music, dance and physical education – the Preschool is a great place for children to embark on their education. To make their journey even easier, it’s nestled within and closely linked with Chilton Primary School, enabling the students to make a seamless transition from early learning to the more disciplined school experience. Preschool students have access to the campus facilities such as the library and playgrounds. The three schools unite at many levels, including at Primary School assemblies, concerts, athletics days and the popular Grandparents’ Day. With modern, purpose-designed facilities, including two age-appropriate playgrounds, the Preschool provides a

safe and welcoming environment for children. Their education is equally tailored, with streams of learning according to their ages – one for those aged two, three and four. The children’s programme focuses on helping them to experience thinking, learning, social and emotional changes while exploring and making sense of the world around them. Once they turn three the focus shifts to preparing them for school, using the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) and the New Zealand Curriculum (Te Whāriki). These combine to help students approach the next exciting stage in their lives with confidence in their ability to cope, on social, emotional and practical levels.

Primary school Chilton Saint James Primary School supports students in Years 1 to 6 in realising their potential – helping them to acquire the skills and knowledge to become curious learners, creative thinkers and effective leaders. Employing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), the School focuses on equipping students for their future in the academic environment, both at Chilton and beyond. It is a holistic curriculum that focuses on the developing child – incorporating social, physical, emotional and cultural growth, and encouraging them to ask challenging questions, reflect critically, develop research skills, and learn how to learn. This approach, developed through extensive research on international best practice, provides a relevant, engaging

and challenging educational framework through which the students connect their existing knowledge to new learning. The Primary School teaching programme acknowledges the increasingly important role of technology in our children’s lives. The students start using iPads from Year 1, and from Year 4 we encourage them to bring their own devices to school, so that they can learn and extend their skills using an iPad. In turn, we ensure that our teachers maintain their technological literacy through professional development opportunities.

Secondary school Chilton Saint James Secondary School provides a broad programme of study for girls in Years 7 to 13. Beginning with a compulsory core programme in Years 7 and 8, they progress towards NCEA and Scholarship qualifications, with opportunities for university study available in some subjects at Year 13. Our aim is always to give students a well balanced education that identifies and responds to their personal strengths, while enabling them to gain essential skills and knowledge that will last them a lifetime. During Years 7 and 8 the students study two languages (French and Chinese) and participate in half-year programmes in Dance, Visual Arts, Materials Technology, Food Technology, Digital Technology and Music. In Year 9 they concentrate on one language course, and can choose two elective subjects. We also offer learning skills programmes to students who need help with literacy, numeracy and study skills.

Between Years 10 and 13 Chilton’s timetabling approach enables students to move fluidly through NCEA. We encourage them to consider multi-level study programmes, with all Year 10 students experiencing a range of NCEA standards. Where appropriate, students can also take full NCEA papers in their areas of strength. This means that, in practice, a student can take a Level 1 NCEA subject at Year 10 and accelerate to Level 3 and Scholarship by Year 12. The opportunities then abound for them to study for Scholarship and/or undertake university studies in the subjects that interest them, while continuing with a variety of other subjects to ensure an all-round education.

The Chilton Dance Centre The Chilton Dance Centre is one of New Zealand’s leading private dance schools. It is an exemplar of outstanding teaching practice for everyone from preschool students to adults in the wider community – and an internationally recognised springboard to professional dance in New Zealand and around the world. Located within the School grounds, the Dance Centre’s facilities include four custom-designed, mirror-lined studios complete with dance floors. It spans the dance genres, from classical ballet to jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, tap and musical theatre dance. No matter what your child’s forté, the Dance Centre will provide them with a supportive environment in which to discover the exhilarating magic of dance. The facilities are used by both girls and boys – from Preschoolers to adults.

Performing arts The Performing Arts programme is a vital part of the Chilton experience, with students encouraged to attend, speech, drama and musical instrument classes, join auditioned and all-comers choirs, try out for the Chilton Amadeus Orchestra, get to their feet with Chilton dance groups, and express their musicianship with ensembles including rock bands and drum corps. Our Primary and Secondary Schools offer music, drama and dance in all their forms. At group level the students love our annual House Music competitions, while our Dance and Music Academy programmes enable talented Secondary School students to build on their abilities and develop their repertoire. An extensive network of itinerant tutors offers students a range of arts and music activities catering to a wide spectrum of interests.

Service and leadership The Christian values of respect and compassion are at the heart of Chilton’s Service Programme. Each student year group takes part in the programme, and the year levels combine each year to lead a service project of their choice. At every stage the students are in control, with a student committee taking the lead in the decision-making process. We also have a School Leadership Programme, which seeks to develop young women who understand the principles of leadership. Our students are equipped and empowered to be leaders in their own lives – inspiring and motivating others and making their mark upon the world.

Sport Chilton has a strong sporting tradition. Many students in Years 3 to 13 participate in one or more sporting activity. We have something for every student with more than 75 teams competing in summer and winter sports. We recognise the value of sport in helping students to develop their skills, confidence, competitive spirit and for many lifelong friendships. Students are encouraged to experience a wide range of sports over their years at Chilton. Coaches are always looking for promising new talent and assist the individual to find a sport through which to develop their abilities. We actively manage and monitor student academic commitments alongside high performance sporting involvement and achievement.

Choose Chilton Chilton has been guiding young women on their paths to academic and creative excellence for almost 100 years. Today we are proud to offer the kind of education you can expect from a private school: a modern, relevant and broadly based curriculum, highly qualified and dedicated teachers, small class sizes, the best available resources both inside and outside the classroom, and a commitment to providing your child with a learning experience in which they are encouraged to explore new horizons, test their potential and develop into a confident, contributing citizen of the world. Past students have told us of their pride in wearing the Chilton red blazer, of the value they gained from attending a school with an exceptional pedigree and record of success, and of the School’s spirit of excellence, which enabled them to grow intellectually, spiritually and creatively into the confident and successful women they are today. Enrol your child at Chilton and you will give them an education they will thank you for. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Enrolment Talking to someone who really understands the School and the enrolment process helps to make the decision about your child’s schooling a little easier. Getting Started The first point of contact at Chilton for families enquiring about entry is our Registrar, Leigh Whitelaw. She can provide a clear overview of the School and help you to gain a real insight into how your child would fit into school life and the kinds of opportunities and facilities we provide. While students may be able to enrol at any year level and at different points throughout the school year, the main intake levels are for Preschool (for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old), new entrants at Year 1 and then in Year 7 (beginning of Secondary School). If you are considering sending your daughter to Chilton for her secondary schooling, we recommend that you enrol at Year 7 as this is the beginning of secondary education at Chilton. We operate a waiting list system and when there are more applications than places available, the following criteria are applied: 1) 2) 3)

sister in the School or other family connection such as the daughter or granddaughter of a Chilton old girl length of time on application list readiness for the programmes offered.

Application Process Please complete the Application for Entry form and return to the Registrar with the Application fee of $100. We then send written confirmation that we have received the Application form and processing fee. The Registrar will then be in touch to arrange a School tour if you have not already attended a School in Action morning (where tours are operated by students). We will also arrange for your daughter to spend the day with us, to give them a feel for what life at Chilton would be like and help with your schooling decision. Please note that while submitting an Application for Entry form secures your daughter’s place on the waiting list, it does not guarantee a position as a student. Positions in the Secondary School can only be confirmed after an enrolment interview with the Principal, Mrs Jude Fawcett.

Enrolment Enrolment interviews are usually held 6 to 9 months prior to the student’s intended entry date. You will be asked to bring any School reports and other documentation to the enrolment interview with your daughter. Following the interview, we review the information gathered and make an overall assessment of the suitability of your daughter to the School. A letter will then be sent either with an offer of a place or allocating a priority place on the waiting list. Once we have made a formal offer of a student position, you will be asked to complete an Enrolment Confirmation form and pay the Acceptance fee of $500 to secure a place.

* In 2015 Chilton Preschool will close on Friday 18 December reopening on 26 January 2016. Chilton Preschool is also closed on weekends and statutory holidays. Children are entitled to the widest possible opportunities to learn. This applies particularly to every preschooler as their capacity for learning is at its peak. Chilton Preschool classes encourage all children to develop to their fullest potential. Our Preschool offers a sound ‘preparation for school’ through its engaging programmes and ensures that your child's introduction to school is a happy experience. The child is gradually introduced to the organisation and discipline she or he must accept at school by regular participation in activities with the whole Junior School, such as sports day, assemblies and concerts. Our Preschool curriculum is based on the Preschool’s Charter requirement, the guidelines of DOPS (desirable objectives and practices), using Te Whāriki as well as the International Baccalaureate, Primary Years Programme and Ethos in Practice. We provide a trans-disciplinary curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners from three years of age. Regular assessment of progress for every child is provided for parents by the fully qualified teaching staff.

Inspiring creative, curious and confident little citizens 2 Year Old (toddler programme) Children of 2 years are at a turning point in their lives, they are embarking on the road toward separation and independence. In their struggle for autonomy, these children are eager to assert a mind of their own, to have their own say. They yearn to be individuals. They are just learning to use their language, to express strong feelings, often revealing this through their actions. If children are to become autonomous and competent they must develop a clear sense of self. The foundation is laid during their toddler years. Only then can children develop traits such as self-motivation, pride, self-respect and accountability. Our programme for 2 – 3 year olds enables our children to experience thinking, learning, social and emotional changes whilst exploring and making sense of the world around them. We link our observations and learning stories to Te Whāriki and the Chilton Preschool curriculum.

What is Te Whāriki? Te Whāriki is the Ministry of Education’s early childhood curriculum policy statement. Te Whāriki is a framework for providing children’s early learning and development within a sociocultural context. It emphasises the learning partnership between teachers, parents, and families. Teachers weave a holistic curriculum in response to children’s learning and development in the early childhood setting and the wider context of the child’s world.

3 – 4 Years Old, Preschool International Baccalaureate (PYP) The curriculum for 3 and 4 year olds is based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) using Te Whāriki , and the Chilton curriculum. Our Preschool is essentially a ‘preparation for school’ programme giving children a head-start to ensure their transition to school is a happy experience. At Chilton we believe passionately that every child is entitled to have the widest possible opportunity to learn. This applies particularly to the young child whose capacity for learning is at its peak. Did you know? Chilton runs the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme from Preschool (from age 3) and Primary School to Year 6.

Activities Preschool activities are centred on the Units of Inquiry which are engaging, relevant, challenging and significant to our preschoolers. Each session is divided into large blocks of time for specific activities, both indoor and outdoor which include: 1)

Activities promoting inquiry by the child, the foundations of reading, writing, language, numeracy, colour recognition, texture sensitivity and developing eye/hand co-ordination and fine motor control.

2)

The programme is balanced with play. Indoor and outdoor activities include fantasy play, block construction, climbing, carpentry and activities involving balls, sand and water, which develop large motor skills, spatial knowledge, physical strength, balance, mathematical, scientific and socialisation skills.

3)

Teacher-directed group activities include mat time, shared reading, music and movement. Discussion, story and evaluation time develop cognitive skills as children recall events and draw and write about them, review events and items of interest and join in reading groups – all of which stimulate the enjoyment of language.

4) Music is an integral part of the programme designed to develop group cohesion as well as music and movement skills. In addition, children also have a music session each week with our specialist music teacher.

The Performing Arts programme in place at our Junior School provides exceptional opportunities to enhance your child’s experience at Chilton. Our Performing Arts tutors are qualified teachers with highly specialised skills, many of whom work, or have worked, professionally in the performing arts arena.
