Miami Rec Center Celebrates 30th Anniversary

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Miami University’s Recreational Sports Center, a facility that has become central to promoting wellness and recreation on campus. Since its opening, the Rec Center has served countless students, faculty, staff, and community members, providing top-tier fitness programs and services for three decades.

In 1992, the Miami Board of Trustees approved construction for a new recreation facility on Miami University's Oxford campus. On September 16, 1994, the newly constructed Rec Center, built at a cost of about twenty-two million dollars, opened its doors for the first time. The construction of the Rec Center was funded from two major sources: the university sold bond instruments, and the state of Ohio also contributed in recognition of the educational and general instructional uses of the Aquatics Center. Subsequently, the Aquatics Center was named in recognition of a longtime legislator, Corwin Nixon, who was retiring.

The objectives behind this new construction were:

• Promote and enhance wellness in the lives of Miami students, members, and guests.

• Provide exceptional customer service by acting on the needs of those we serve, internally and externally.

• Offer quality programs and facilities to meet the diverse recreational needs of their patrons.

• Develop the full potential of our student employees as an extension of their education experience.

• Encourage and provide personal and professional development for all levels of their team.

Since 1994, Miami Recreation has added a new indoor Equestrian Center, renovated the Outdoor Pursuit Center, expanded to four satellite facilities (Clawson, North Quad, Chestnut, and Sawyer), created a disc golf course, and added synthetic turf to Cook Field to promote health and wellness for Miami University and the Oxford community. The Rec Center also underwent one major renovation that added a walk-in pro shop and 3,000 additional square feet of fitness space.

In the university's history, there have been many different locations on campus that have been home to recreational sports and programs. Miami Recreation currently hosts over 40 health and recreation programs serving faculty, staff, students, and the community, with participants ranging in age from 1 to 101 years old and totaling roughly 1 million participant hours.

Celebrating Our First 90 Days with Workday!

As we mark the completion of our first 90 days with Workday, it’s time to celebrate the collective efforts and achievements that have transformed our processes and improved our workplace experience. Our transition to this new system has been nothing short of remarkable, characterized by engagement, collaboration, and innovation.

A Connected Community

We’ve established a Miami-wide shared Google Chat Space, Workday at Miami, that invites all employees with a Miami email account to join. This platform has fostered a vibrant community where colleagues share insights, ask questions, and provide support to one another, exemplifying the power of crowdsourced information sharing.

Impressive Statistics

In just three months, the volume of activity has been significant:

• Timecards Processed: 11,612

• Leaves of Absences: 317

• Approved Time Off Requests: 24,959

• Total Completed Reqs./Purchase Orders: 5,624

• Total Contract Requests: 247

• New Supplier Requests Processed: 391

• Supplier Invoices Processed: 8,113

These numbers highlight the system’s extensive use and the hard work of various departments.

Enhancements and Upgrades

Since our launch, we have already experienced our first major Workday version upgrade, implementing 668 of 1,054 product enhancements. Notable improvements include:

1. A refreshed look for the Related Items action item.

2. Enhanced display for Benefit Elections, providing a more user-friendly experience.

3. A simplified search function to make navigating the system easier.

Mobile Accessibility

The introduction of the Workday app has proven beneficial, with many employees utilizing it for on-the-go access to their Workday accounts.

Support and Feedback

We've received valuable feedback through support tickets, with submissions peaking at 400 in the first week and gradually decreasing as users become more adept with the system. This feedback is crucial in helping us address issues and improve the Workday experience for everyone.

It’s that time of year again! Open enrollment is now open through October 31 and provides you the opportunity to make changes to your benefit selections for the plan year beginning January 1, 2025.

Please note the following important details:

• If you do not make any changes during the 2024 open enrollment period, your current benefits (medical, dental, vision, and voluntary selections) will continue into 2025.

• Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions must be elected during open enrollment; contributions from 2024 cannot be rolled over automatically.

HR is excited to announce that Health Advocate has replaced Cerner Wellness as the new Healthy Miami vendor! The new Healthy Miami website is now live, and you can access it to learn more about the program or schedule your annual biometric screening.

Key updates include:

The Healthy Miami program activities (including tobacco-free initiatives and steps tracking by age and gender) will remain the same.

• Health Advocate will provide additional advocacy and health navigation services for participants.

• Employees and covered spouses will need to register for individual accounts, similar to the previous system.

• After registration, users will see a "Your Alerts" bar on the homepage, which provides a link to the 2024 Healthy Miami program information.

If you have already completed steps for your 2025 discount, please ensure you fill out the required Health Plan Provider Consent Form to update your points.

DAVID GOODMAN: COMPETITOR TO COACH

At the heart of every skater lies a unique story—a journey defined by passion, perseverance, and the thrill of gliding on ice. For one dedicated coach and former competitor, that journey began in New Bedford, Massachusetts, at the age of 14. Despite a challenging start, his relentless attitude transformed a late beginning into a successful career spanning competitions, coaching, and ultimately, a life at Miami University.

“I had never been to an ice rink before,” he recalls, reflecting on his first experience on the ice. After a rough introduction involving rental skates and an unkind hockey player, it seemed like skating might not be for him. Yet, curiosity won over fear, and just a month later, he found himself back on the ice, this time with a newfound determination. “I skated a lot better and found it a lot of fun,” he says, sparking a passion that would carry him through years of dedication and competition.

As he honed his skills, he progressed from basic lessons to competing at higher levels. “I started private lessons and got exposed to skills competitions,” he explains. His journey culminated in senior pairs competitions after a transition from singles skating. “There was a girl at my rink interested in pairs, so we decided to give it a try,” he recalls, noting how that initial partnership turned into a serious competitive effort.

The thrill of competing soon became a defining aspect of his life. He reminisces fondly about competing at the national level in stunning locations like Denver and Salt Lake City, where the beauty of the mountains added to the excitement. “Competing at Skate America internationally was definitely the height of my career,” he reflects, proud of being selected to represent Team USA.

Throughout his skating journey, he credits significant influences in his life, especially his father and two remarkable coaches who became like second mothers to him. “They were instrumental in exposing me to other coaches and opportunities,” he notes, emphasizing the importance of support and mentorship in sports. These relationships helped shape his approach to coaching, which he would later carry into his role at Goggin Ice Center at Miami.

After stepping back from competition, he took a detour into entrepreneurship, running a party planning business that employed skaters from the University of Delaware. “We had about 20 skaters working as characters for parties and events,” he shares. This innovative venture not only supported his skating endeavors but also created a community where skaters could work and train simultaneously.

His journey eventually led him to New York, where he performed in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. It was there that he met his future wife, who was a dancer in the show. After starting a family, the couple decided to move closer to her roots at Miami, paving the way for a new chapter in their lives.

All roads really do lead back to Oxford.

Upon arriving at Miami, he encountered an opportunity to coach at the Goggin Ice Center. “There was a need for coaches, and I was fortunate to fill that role,” he explains. Initially coaching without an official title, he eventually worked his way up to the director position. His biggest accomplishment, he notes, is fostering a supportive environment for skaters at Goggin, ensuring they have the resources and encouragement to thrive.

One of his proudest achievements is the growth of the Learn to Skate program and the annual ice show, which brings together skaters of all ages. “It’s rewarding to see skaters who grew up here continue their journey,” he says, reflecting on the heartwarming moments when former young skaters return as Miami students, adding to the community.

For him, coaching goes beyond technical skills; it’s about building relationships and creating a welcoming environment. “I love meeting students during orientation and showing them our facility,” he shares. “It’s amazing to see them appreciate this space and realize they can continue skating while pursuing their education.” His commitment to fostering a love for skating resonates deeply with students, many of whom find their passion reignited while at Goggin.

As he continues to shape the future of skating at Goggin Ice Center, his journey remains a testament to resilience and the importance of community. “It feels fortunate to walk in every day and know that this is the rink I'm working in, or this is the rink I get to skate in. You know, we look around and we go, ‘OK, we’ve got a pretty nice place to do our thing,’” he concludes, embodying the joy and pride that comes from being a part of Goggin Ice Center. Whether through competition or coaching, his story serves as an inspiring reminder that a love for skating can create lasting bonds and transformative experiences, both on and off the ice.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE DEMSKE CULINARY SUPPORT CENTER: A HUB OF CAMPUS OPERATIONS

The Demske Culinary Support Center (DCSC) may be located off-campus, but it plays a crucial role in keeping Miami University running smoothly. Home to FBS Marketing and the university’s Vending and Transportation Delivery teams, as well as housing support services for vending machines across campus, DCSC is a busy hub of activity. Located next to DCSC is Staff Development and the Miami Dietitian Resource Center. During move-in weekend, this vital work takes on an even greater scale, with hydration stations prepared and stocked to ensure Miami students and families stay refreshed. This year, Miami’s football team lent a helping hand, preparing approximately 6,000 bottles of water for distribution at hydration stations across campus.

The collaboration with the football team is just one example of the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into major events like move-in weekend. As the team filled containers with water bottles, they worked alongside the staff at DCSC, who ensure daily operations run seamlessly. The Transportation Delivery Assistants, including Ron Downard, Thomas Canada, J.D. Smith, and Trish Staton, lead the charge in stocking vending machines and delivering goods around campus. Also part of the DCSC team is Darris King who maintains the facility and surrounding areas of the building. They’re supported by the leadership of Scott Smith, General Manager of Vending and Dock Operations.

Throughout the academic year, the Vending team manages an impressive operation. With 207 vending machines spread across 73 buildings, the team stocks between 5,000 and 6,000 products each day, ensuring students and staff have access to snacks and beverages 24/7. In September alone, over 129,000 products were sold through the vending machines. Top items include popular beverages like Life WTR and Dr. Pepper, as well as snacks like Cheez-Its and Gatorade bars.

This operation wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of DCSC’s full-time team, along with a dedicated crew of about 20 student employees. These students assist with everything from warehouse operations to working on routes alongside the Transportation Delivery team. Their role is vital, especially when it comes to the physically demanding work of loading vending trucks and maintaining stock levels. It’s a fast-paced job that starts early each day, with crews pulling stock, loading trucks, and navigating the campus to ensure machines are always filled.

The vending operation relies heavily on state-of-the-art telemetry and payment systems to track inventory in real-time, but it’s the hands-on work of the team that truly keeps things running. Every day, they move thousands of cases of product, all while ensuring the Miami community has access to the food and drinks they rely on.

WELCOMING COACH NOREEN

Anthony Noreen was hired in April to become the seventh head coach in Miami hockey history. Noreen, the previous coach of the Tri-City Storm in the United States Hockey League (USHL) hopes to bring success to the Miami Hockey team that ended last season with a 16 game winless streak. Finance and Business Services Marketing (FBSM) helped design and produce Coach Noreen's coach's mural at Goggin Ice Center (pictured below).

Alicia Rizzo

Stephanie Dailey, a 2016 kinesiology major from Miami University worked with the Conference and Event Services department to host the 2024 Find Your WayAccelerate Retreat this past June. Dailey, the Young Adult Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati, was excited about the idea of bringing her group to her alma mater.

Her three-day retreat was a big success. At its conclusion, Dailey shared: "I just wanted to reach out and say how much we enjoyed having our Accelerate Retreat at Miami this year. It was a great experience for our young adults and volunteers. The dorm and campus worked perfectly for our needs. You and your staff have been so great to work with and we appreciate how helpful everyone was throughout the weekend! Thank you for everything!!"

MIAMI ALUMNI HOSTS DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF GREATER CINCINNATI RETREAT ON CAMPUS

SGT. JONATHAN PRICE GRADUATES FROM PRESTIGIOUS POLICE COMMAND PROGRAM

The MUPD is pleased to announce the recent graduation of Sgt. Jonathan Price from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety. Sgt. Price successfully completed the 22-week Staff and Command program, which concluded on March 24, 2024.

The School of Police Staff and Command offers upper-level college instruction through 27 core blocks of instruction, with additional optional blocks in each session. Major topics of study include leadership, human resources, employee relations, organizational behavior, applied statistics, planning and policy development, budgeting, and resource allocation.

Established in 1936, the Center for Public Safety at Northwestern University aims to expand university-based education and training for the law enforcement community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in police training, management training, and executive development.

Please join us in welcoming Sydney Wissmar, our new Print Production Assistant for FBS Marketing! Sydney is a recent Miami University graduate, earning a BFA in Communication Design in May 2024. She previously interned with FBS Marketing as a Graphic Design Intern, where she honed her skills and developed a passion for creative production. In her free time, Sydney enjoys reading, drawing, spending time with friends, and exploring her latest hobby, bouldering. We are excited to have her on our team and look forward to her contributions to our department!

Miami Dining Services' first Coffee Crawl was a hit, encouraging students to explore all the coffee locations on campus while collecting punches on a loyalty card for a chance to win a custom 24 oz. tumbler. This year's tumbler featured a beautiful design created by Caitlin Wong, a sophomore majoring in Communication Design and Emerging Technology in Business and Design.

Caitlin’s artwork showcases Pulley Tower framed by arches, inspired by her time living on Western Campus and hearing the bells ring throughout the day. Her design includes playful clouds, sun rays, and birds, adding a dynamic touch that captures the spirit of campus life. Congratulations to Caitlin on her fantastic design and for making the first Coffee Crawl a memorable success!

2024 COFFEE CRAWL

Anyone who knows me, knows I love to bake. This time of year is especially enjoyable with all the flavors of fall. One of my family's top requested items is pumpkin cream cheese muffins. Sweet, moist, and oh so creamy... A crowd-pleaser for sure. Maybe your family will enjoy them as well.

Start with your dry ingredients and get them all combined together in a medium bowl:

• 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

• 3/4 cup granulated sugar

• 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Then move onto mixing your wet ingredients in a large bowl:

• 15-ounce can of pumpkin puree

• 1/2 cup vegetable oil

• 2 eggs

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (maybe a smidge more for fun)

You are then going to add your dry ingredients into your wet ingredients, mixing until combined. Set aside.

In a small bowl you are going to mix the ingredients for your cream cheese filling:

• 1 block of cream cheese (softened)

• 6 Tablespoons granulated sugar

• 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour

• 2 teaspoons whole milk

Mix well with a spatula or hand mixer, trying to remove all clumps. Softening the cream cheese helps.

Place the mixture into a piping bag or plastic bag and cut the corner or tip.

Line a muffin tin with paper cups. Fill each cup about 2/3 full with batter. After all cups are filled insert the tip of your cream cheese bag half way into the center of the batter. Begin squeezing while you pull up. This will provide a generous cream cheese to muffin ratio.

Bake at 350 degrees for 22-25 minutes. Allow to cool and enjoy.

Friday Noon Skates are free for benefit-eligible Miami employees as a part of your Healthy Miami benefits. Starting now through April 18, you can come to Goggin Ice Center for a relaxing skate with your friends or coworkers. It's a great way to boost your mood, get some exercise, and connect with fellow employees. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or trying it for the first time, we encourage you to come out and have some fun!

Additionally, Goggin will be hosting faculty and staff curling workshops on Wednesdays, January 8, 15, and 22, 2025. Pick up a new skill while having fun on the ice with colleagues! All equipment will be provided, but athletic shoes and long pants are recommended.

Did you know that faculty and staff have free access to the Rec Center every Wednesday from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.? Whether you’re looking to unwind after a tough start to the week, squeeze in a midweek workout, or just explore all that the Rec Center has to offer, Wednesdays are the perfect opportunity to do so—for free!

Garden Dining Commons management and staff would like to express our immense gratitude for our dish room staff. Working mainly in the back of house doing all the dirty jobs and cleaning up after our messes, we never want them to feel forgotten. Day in and day out they are responsible for ensuring the clean and sanitary environment we have come to enjoy. As most operations are, we are short staffed and the team here has really banned together to help one another and ensure we are successful. Picking up overtime on their days off or staying late to ensure the next shift is set, they are truly remarkable people. We appreciate each and every one of you. Lissa has been instrumental in the success of our Workday Wednesday drop-in Zoom Q&A sessions with her continued presence and thoughtful questions— she's a bedrock of Miami knowledge and provides insight and clear questions for items that she's unable to resolve on her own, and by using existing training materials and information.
