ABOUT US Centre for Social Research Development (CSRD) is a Hue-based non-government organisation (NGO) working for justice of vulnerable communities affected by external factors. We strengthen and promote community resilience to threats from climate change, hydropower construction, agricultural and industrial economic development.

KEY ACTIVITIES 1. Research the real issues at the grassroots level and make the latest information available at all stages of project implementation. 2. Create changes and raise awareness by training and advocacy. 3. Empower the vulnerable people, particularly women, to help them understand more and then can speak up about their own problems. 4. Develop pilot projects on educating for awareness and behavior changes

CSRD works in partnership with local communities in Thua Thien Hue province and others in the Central of Vietnam, as well as locations across Vietnam and others neighboring countries. CSRD provide support to disadvantaged and vulnerable people with information, empowerment, advocacy and other practical assistances. All projects are well managed in close cooperation with local residents and local government with skilled and experienced staffs. We work to ensure a positive change for the future of the Vietnamese.

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF CSRD Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Centre for Social Research Development (CSRD), I would like to express my sincere thanks to all sponsors, partners, friends, colleagues, and communities who are always by our side and support us during the development process of CSRD. Among the achievements that CSRD has today, which cannot be lack of your contribution. We are always aware and respectful of that. 2020 is a year with too many difficulties including the COVID-19 pandemic and the natural disaster events in the Central region and leaving a lot of serious consequences for the residents. This year also went by with challenges as well as successes for CSRD. However, above all, we still see that our activities and projects have been benefiting the communities and society. This is the main motivation for us to confidently embark on our long adventure. During the last year, we have continued to carry out activities related to water resources, gender violence, and livelihood support for communities in Dak Lak, Quang Nam, and Thua Thien Hue provinces. Moreover, we continue to implement advanced projects on genderbased assessment of hydroelectricity and women's empowerment in livelihood development. These projects are aimed at supporting the affected communities and vulnerable groups so that they can take control of their own lives. The year 2021 is coming, and many challenges and opportunities are waiting. All members of CSRD will make efforts to bring as many benefits as possible to our society and community. PROJECT PREVENTION OF ALL FORMS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, BOYS, AND GIRLS IN THUA THIEN HUE PROVINCE

INTRODUCTION AND ACTIVITIES Sexual violence and abuse tend to increase in both urban and rural areas for women, girls, and students, especially poor women working in manual labor. The main reasons leading to this increase are the lack of knowledge about gender equality and gender-based sexual violence, as well as the victims' feeling of inferiority and the reluctance to speak about the suffered violent acts. This is an urgent social issue, which needs the help of the whole community to resolve. From August 2020 to March 2021, with funding from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) of the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam, the Center for Social Development Studies (CSRD) has implemented the project "Prevention of various forms of sexual violence against women, boys, and girls in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam".

Awareness training, expert talk, contests on related topics, and community communication... will be held regularly throughout this project.

WOMEN AND CLIMATE CHANGE Vietnam is an extremely vulnerable country to the negative effects of climate change. Communities are increasingly sensitive to climate variation and the negative

impacts

are

worsened

Many Vietnamese people, including men, women, and children, are vulnerable to and affected by extreme climatic events such as storms and floods and their consequences such as riverbank erosion and mudslide. The number of challenges in climate change is increasing dramatically. Therefore, climate change adaptation is a vital solution in both the short and long

terms.

In the resettlement and downstream areas of A Vuong hydropower plant, people are also reaching solutions to improve their own livelihoods because of local environmental and economic pressures, which are exacerbated as a result of climate change.

In 2019-2020, CSRD conducts the study on Climate Change: Empowering Women through the Promotion of Gender Equality in Quang Nam Province - Vietnam, sponsored by APWLD.

RESEARCH

This study uses the FPAR methodology, focusing on women's rights. FPAR allows researchers, communities, and women to participate explicitly in the research process. Women are the focused object of research with an active role in this methodology. Communities need to promote women's capacities and initiatives in preventing and mitigating natural disasters and responding to climate change. The project will promote the participation of women's groups in Dong Giang, Tay Giang and Dai Hong district in supporting the people to access and control local land and natural resources. Project implementation will enhance capacity and create conditions for local women. Therefore, they can solve their problems in sustainable and in-place ways, contribute to building a climate-resilient community, and improve the access to finance public services and clean water resources through policy dialogue. CSRD will build livelihood development groups of women in the resettlement and downstream areas of A Vuong hydropower plant to address environmental issues and develop sustainably.

PROJECT IMPROVE CAPACITY OF NATURAL DISASTER RESPONSE FOR 06 LOCALITIES IN THE CENTRAL & CENTRAL HIGHLANDS REGION. Since 2019, the Center for Social Development Studies, with the sponsorship of Development Workshop France (DWF), has conducted surveys to assess the capacity, conditions, and needs of natural disaster prevention (NDP) of localities. This project is implemented in 06 localities, namely Thuan Loc and Hai Duong communes (Huong Tra town) of Thua Thien Hue province, An My ward (Tam Ky city) and Dai Hong commune (Dai Loc district) of Quang Nam province, Hoa Phu and Ea Nuol communes (Buon Don District) of Dak Lak province. These localities have specific climatic conditions, often affected by natural disasters such as floods, droughts, landslides, storms, and cyclones. NDP tools are purchased and handed over for use. After this assessment of awareness and needs, we found that the residents really want to supplement knowledge and update information in the field of NDP in order to increase their resilience and recovery. The Disaster Prevention Plan is built annually by the local authorities. However, if natural disasters occur, they can cause several unnecessary damages because of the lack of knowledge, skills, and even equipment at the local level. Based on the needs from the initial survey activities, the project has supported 20 million VND for each community, which means that the total funding support for 06 communities is 120 million VND, to help these communities be proactive in response to natural disasters and climate change.

CAPACITY TO PREVENT DISASTERS Therefore, the communities have carried out many diverse activities. The solutions focused on raising awareness of the residents: training for disaster prevention officers and village leaders in Hai Duong commune, training on rescue by boat on the river of Thuan Loc ward (Hue city), and communication on natural disasters in Ea Nuol commune (Dak Lak) and An My ward (Quang Nam).

In addition, there are other solutions in progress: preparing more rescue equipment such as boats and cole machines in Thuan Loc ward (Thua Thien Hue); buying life jackets, hand saws, ropes, flashlights, communication speakers... in Hoa Phu commune and Ea Nuol commune (Dak Lak), Hai Duong commune (Thua Thien Hue), and An My ward (Quang Nam); building a disaster prevention fund to support the residents in Hoa Phu commune (Dak Lak)... The community of Dai Hong commune (Quang Nam) has a plan to prevent landslide, protect property, lives and cultivated land of the people along the Vu Gia Thu Bon downstream, by planting trees along the 3km riverbank of Dau Dom area in November 2020.

Supporting 488 Informal Waste Collectors

The Centre for Social Research Development (CSRD), with funding from the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and the Vietnam Zero Waste Alliance (VZWA), gave 488 gift sets to people who work as informal waste collectors in Hue city.

THE OBJECTS OF THIS ACTIVITY ARE WORKERS AND AGENTS WHO BUY OR COLLECT WASTE AND SCRAPS.

Activities take place in June and July of 2020 in 20/27 wards of Hue city, Thua Thien Hue province. The objects of this activity are workers and agents who buy or collect waste and scraps in Hue city.

The purpose of the activity is to raise awareness, protect public health, and contribute to the epidemic prevention and control, especially in the ongoing COVID - 19 epidemic. Each gift bag includes rice, labor gloves, masks, and garbage tongs.

PROJECT REDUCING PLASTIC WASTE POLLUTION BY BRAND AUDIT

INTRODUCTION In the context of the ever-increasing volume of plastic waste leading to the destruction of the habitats of both humans and animals, plastic manufacturing companies have no interest in reducing plastic usage or offering alternative solutions to disposable plastic. The numbers of plastic packaging and single-use plastic products discharged by so many brands are large and rapidly increasing year by year. Responsible manufacturing aims to cut the amount of disposable plastic and promote long-term solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. This means plastic solutions would be achieved across the plastic value chain, from extraction to disposal, focusing on prevention and minimization. It is necessary to prove the actual amount of plastic that corporations and companies have produced as well as discarded to increase the compulsion of collection and treatment solutions. Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) has been in operation since 2016, is a global movement to demand a drastic reduction of plastic and promote sustainable solutions to this crisis. A waste audit is an environmental management tool, aims to prevent and minimize pollution from the production stage. A waste audit is considered as one of the effective tools in pollution control to contribute to the implementation of the national green growth strategy.

ACTIVITIES CSRD is one of 197 organizations worldwide that performed a brand audit and then contributed observations to the total data of the global waste audit in 2020 (Break Free From Plastic). Operating in 2 days on 14th-15th October 2020, CSRD cooperated with 10 scrap collectors to classify plastics, indicate using purposes and

brands, and produce quantity statistics. In addition, CSRD learns many plastic problems from the experience of longtime plastic waste collectors contributing to the global statistics of the program # BreakFreeFromPlastic2020.

SURVEY ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION DIEN HUONG COMMUNE - THUA THIEN HUE PROVINCE

In recent years, the issue of environmental pollution, especially water pollution, has always been a hot topic that has attracted a lot of attention from the whole society. Both domestic and international studies show that the construction of hydroelectricity, coal-fired thermal plants, and supporting industrial zones as well as the discharge of waste into the environment have resulted in narrowing the area of natural ecosystems and decreasing diverse biodiversity. In order to contribute to building research orientation and forming community development projects in the coming time, CSRD conducted a survey with 100 short questionnaires in Dien Huong commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province.

CONDUCTING SURVEYS The main content is to learn about the concerns and perceptions of the community about energy, the environment, and related policies. These results will contribute to the realization of the energy development orientation of Vietnam "Prioritize rapid and sustainable energy development, associated with protecting ecological environment, ensuring national defense and security, implementing social progress and equity are of particular importance and are a central task throughout the process of national industrialization and modernization ”.

This research is also a significant activity to contribute to policy advocacy, in particular, the 8th Energy Development Plan of Vietnam, and to carry out the river and water protection mission of the Vietnam River Network.

PROJECT DONATE AND SUPPORT FLOODED COMMUNITIES IN CENTRAL VIETNAM

ACTIVITIES In addition to the implementation of projects, through the fan page "LŨ LỤT MIỀN TRUNG" (means the flood in the Central), CSRD carried out some activities to call, donate, and support the severely flooded communities in Central Vietnam.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

CSRD organized a collection of cash, clothes, and books… to send to them. After nearly 2 months, CSRD received 162,466,352 VND (One hundred sixtytwo million four hundred sixty-six thousand three hundred fifty-two dong) with other items of many kind hearts. Subsequent support activities were then carried out in Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri, and Quang Binh provinces.

The activities were small-scale but partly share these difficulties. Next time, CSRD will continue to carry out these volunteer activities and expect to support more than other disadvantaged communities.

Handbook: Reducing - Classifying - Recycling plastic waste This Handbook is the very first publication that is developed and published by CSRD within the framework of the project. The problem of PLASTIC WASTE has been more burning than ever before. Therefore, educating and raising awareness of the communities in general and of students in particular and the public, in general, are critical demands and in need of long-term efforts and orientations.
