2009 Season Preview
2009 Season Preview
14
The Team The Saints begin their second season of competition this fall as they look to build upon their 1-7 inaugural season. Even though St. Scholastica had just one win in 2008, there were about three other games where the Saints had a chance to win in the fourth quarter. CSS returns most of its skilled players on the offensive side of the ball. The Saints ranked 49th in NCAA Division III in pass offense last season. The catalyst, quarterback Jake Olson (So.-Esko, Minn.), returns after throwing for 1,649 yards in eight games. He had 12 touchdowns passes and a completion percentage of 52-percent. Olson’s favorite target, wide receiver Mike VanMassenhove (So.-Superior, Wis.), also returns. VanMassenhove was a first team All-UMAC selection last season after catching 52 passes for 898 yards. VanMassenhove was ninth in the country with 112.3 receiving yards per game. He also led the conference with 6.5 receptions per contest. Returning with VanMassenhove at receiver will be Jonny Bennett (So.-Blackduck, Minn.), Keegan O’Neill (So.-Superior, Wis.), and Matthew Johnson (So.-Superior, Wis.). Bennett was the second-leading CSS receiver last season with 33 catches. Keegan O’Neill had 17 grabs and Matthew Johnson had 16 receptions. Coaches have been impressed with Johnson in the offseason. Freshmen Tyler Olson (Fr.-Washburn, Wis.) and Don Anderson (Fr.-Prentice, Wis.) will add even further depth to receiving corps. Olson and Anderson were the two fastest players in preseason testing. Freshmen Nick Thiry (Fr.-Braham, Minn.) and Justin Hanson (Fr.-Atwater, Minn./ACGC) are also expected to contribute. In the backfield, Christopher Henagin (Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) is back after accumulating 1,411 all-purpose yards last season, which led the UMAC and was 14th in NCAA Division III. Henagin averaged 102. 5 yards rushing per game and reached the end zone nine times. Geoff Torzewski (Jr.-Superior, Wis.) and Carl Switzer (Sr.-Barnum, Minn.) will back-up Henagin. Switzer, along with Henagin, was one of the strongest in preseason testing. Up front, the young offensive line returns second team AllUMAC tackle Stephen Voelkner (So.-Duluth, Minn./Central). Center Ross Dockter (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) and guards Kyle Groves (So.-Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Darnell Tienter (So.-Hudson, Wis./Somerset) are also back after starting at least five games last season. Adam Anderson (So.-Duluth, Minn./Central) will also see more action this season after he started one game in 2008. For specialists, the Saints needed to find a place kicker after not attempting a field goal last season, which led to 67-percent red zone scoring percentage. Freshman Matt Holter (Fr.-Proctor, Minn.) will look to take over the kicking duties this season. Keegan O’Neill returns as the punter. O’Neill led the UMAC last year with 33.5 yards per punt. Newcomers Alex Duea (Fr.Royalton, Minn.) and Jon Burns (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) should also add strength to the kicking and punting game. If the Saints want to bring up their win total from last year it will have to improve on the defensive side of the ball. A couple of big losses for the Saints this offseason were defensive end Travis Larson, who graduated early, and safety Phil DesMarais, who is unable to play due to injury. On the defensive line, tackle Doug Moore (So.-Ladysmith, Wis.) returns after he was a second team All-UMAC choice in
2008. Moore was second in the conference with 3.5 sacks and was fifth in the league with 9.5 tackles for a loss. Nose guard Joe Berg (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) comes back to plug up the middle. He had 21 tackles last season. Freshmen Zach Dubanoski (Fr.-New Prague, Minn.) and Chas Lemon (Fr.-Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) will also see a lot of playing time. At linebacker, JP Leary III (So.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./ South St. Paul) returns in the middle of the defense. Even though Leary missed some time due to injury last season he still finished third on the squad with 47 tackles, including five tackles for a loss. Ryan Bernsdorf (So.-Meadowlands, Minn./ Floodwood) is also back in the inside after starting four games last season. At outside linebacker, returner Mike Evans (So.Andover, Minn./St. Francis), who started seven games last season, and freshman Chris Doran (Fr.-Andover, Minn.) are contending for the starting positions. Returner Michael Kaplan (So.-Elysian, Minn./W-E-M) will also contribute at the linebacker position. In the secondary, the Saints return little experience from last season. Cornerback Adrian Greene (So.-Hermantown, Minn./ Duluth Central) played in three games and started one, while the other cornerback, Justin Trautmiller (So.-Somerset, Wis.) was injured in the season opener. Preston Gunderson (So.Virginia, Minn.), who had one of the two CSS interceptions last season will also see time in the secondary. Freshman Sean Graskey (Fr.-Superior, Wis.) and transfer Scott Greening (Fr.Antigo, Wis.) will look to step right in at the safety positions. The Schedule Unlike its inaugural season, which featured just eight games, CSS will play a full 10-game schedule its second go-around. The Saints will play three of their first four games at home. The Saints open at home with Concordia University of Chicago on Saturday, September 5th at Public Schools Stadium. St. Scholastica then goes on the road the following week to Maranatha Baptist Bible College (Wis.) on Saturday, September 12th. The team returns home on September 19th where they will face Wisconsin Lutheran College at Ole Haugsrud Field across the bridge in Superior. Wisconsin Lutheran was CSS’s first-ever opponent last season. St. Scholastica then will host its second-ever Homecoming football game on September 26th when they open up conference action against the University of Minnesota-Morris at Malosky Stadium. The Saints leave town for their second road game of the season in the first Saturday in October at Crown College on the third. CSS will have its final home game on October 10th when it will face Macalester College at Public Schools Stadium. The Saints and the Scots went to overtime last season. The Saints hit the road for the rest of the season with a conference contest against the defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Champions Northwestern College on October 17th. The Saints then will head to Ellendale, N.D. to face Trinity Bible College on October 24th. CSS defeated Trinity Bible last season for the team’s first victory. On Friday, October 30th, the Saints head to the Metrodome for UMAC Dome Day against new UMAC Associate member Eureka College (Ill.). The Saints close out their season at Martin Luther College on Saturday, November 7th.

College of St. Scholastica Football 2009 About St. Scholastica The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in “Tier 1” of Midwestern Universities– Master’s level. The magazine’s rankings are based upon criteria that include academic reputation, student retention, class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni support. St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The College was founded in 1912 in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by Benedictine values. With a vision of sending forth thoughtful leaders – graduates who are committed to serving and transforming the world – St. Scholastica is an academic community that offers “learning to touch the world.” The College has programs in the liberal arts and sciences along with professional career fields, in addition to 19 varsity intercollegiate athletics programs and more than 60 extracurricular opportunities. St. Scholastica has graduated more than 13,000 alumni; 97 percent of St. Scholastica graduates are typically in career fields or graduate school within six months of graduation. Location: One of the most distinctive aspects of the College is its location. Found in scenic Duluth, Minnesota, St. Scholastica’s 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior from a wooded ridge in a tranquil residential area. You are minutes from the region’s best shopping areas and a downtown that features plenty of cultural excitement. There are great opportunities in terms of internships and career contacts, as well as extraordinary social and recreational activities.
Financial Aid: Of course, college costs money. But the smart money thinks of this as an investment that will pay personal and financial dividends for a lifetime. Over 3,500 students currently enrolled at The College of St. Scholastica believe that the quality and benefits of their education outweigh the costs. Over 98 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid. In fact, the average annual award in 2009-10 was $19,000. Plus, there are literally hundreds of need and non-need based scholarships available. Campus Community: Spend any length of time on this beautiful campus and you can’t help but notice how friendly everyone is. With countless things happening on and off campus, boredom is not a problem at St. Scholastica. From the city’s Lakewalk near the shores of Lake Superior to its Skyline Drive along the hilltops, and from the College’s Reif Recreation Center and new Wellness Center to its classic Tower Hall, the combination of Duluth and St. Scholastica creates an exciting place to attend college.
About St. Scholastica
Size and Faculty: If personal attention is what you want, this is the right place. With a total enrollment over 3,500, the student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1. If you take the opportunity, you can get to know your professors and they will get to know you – usually on a first-name basis. Collectively, the faculty members’ experiences, education and teaching positions have taken them through decades and around the globe. Now they’re all right here for you.
Resources and Facilities: St. Scholastica has well-equipped classrooms, computer labs, laboratories, and learning resource centers. The science center is packed with laboratories that you won’t find at many, if any, other colleges. In addition, the College offers a number of study abroad and service learning opportunities. The acoustically superb Mitchell Auditorium hosts dozens of speakers, bands and other events throughout the school year. A Wellness Center, which opened in autumn 2004 and grew in size the summer of 2008 due to additions, houses a six-lane indoor running track, four multi-purpose courts, a climbing wall, aerobic room, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and a new weightlifting facility, as well as other features for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

THE SAINTS ATHLETICS CLUB The College of St. Scholastica’s Athletics Department has the goal of becoming a nationally-known NCAA Division III sports program. This goal reflects our deeply held view that strong and successful sports teams benefit everyone associated with the College. The positive image generated by winning teams frequently is the first impression prospective students and their families have of our school. Winning teams give alumni and current students a source of pride and “bragging rights.” It is our commitment to keep our athletics program the best in the league and competitive with the best in the country. Our teams will always be a positive reflection of St. Scholastica’s past, present and future. We have taken many steps to strengthen our foundation and we are prepared to move forward. One step is the Saints Athletics Club, an organization dedicated to connecting supporters of CSS sports with each other and with current student-athletes while also generating the resources needed to supplement the Athletics Department’s traditional budget. As the College grows, there will always be widespread need for additional resources. The success of the Saints Athletics Club will allow the Athletics Department some degree of independence as we fund initiatives we consider essential for our future growth. If you would like to join or would like more information regarding the Saints Athletics Club please contact: Don Olson at 218-723-5934 or dolson4@css.edu

College of St. Scholastica Football 2009 About the UMAC UMAC ALL-SPORTS TROPHY The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the placefinishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conferencesponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven secondplace finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won regular season championships in 2008-09 as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The St. Scholastica football team made its first game one to remember, falling just short to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors by a score of 36-29 at Raabe Stadium. CSS was playing a team that had already played two games this season and has fielded a varsity program for nine years. However, the Saints gave the Warriors the best effort they had and gave the over 100 St. Scholastica fans, who made the trip, an exciting show. After the Saints went threeand-out on their first possession, Keegan O’Neill struck a 51-yard punt down to the Warriors seven yard line. On the first play of the drive for Wisconsin Lutheran, the snap went over the quarterback’s head and out of the end zone for a safety, the first points in St. Scholastica football history. The Saints scored their first touchdown halfway through the second quarter when Matthew Johnson got the option pitch from quarterback Jake Olson and dove into the end zone to make the score 21-9. With the score 36-15 Warriors in the fourth, Olson connected with Keegan O’Neill for a sevenyard touchdown strike to make the score 36-22. The Saints cut the margin to seven when Olson threw his third touchdown pass of the afternoon, hitting VanMassenhove again from 12 yards out to make the score 36-29 with 2:14 left in the game. CSS’s Kyle Hoffman then executed a prefect on-side kick as the Saints recovered and had a chance. The Saints drove into Warrior territory, before a gameending interception on thirdand-long.
MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team dropped its second game at the University of Minnesota-Morris 21-7 at Big Cat Stadium in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener. Minnesota-Morris (2-1, 1-0) jumped out quickly on the Saints, scoring on its first two possessions. With the score 14-0 in favor of Morris, CSS quarterback Alex Thiry, in his first action of the season, went 2-for-2 on the scoring drive capped off on a Christopher Henagin 2-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-7 at the half. Morris took the opening possession of the second half down the field and extended its lead to 21-7 On the Saints’ opening possession of the second half, they took the ball all the way down to the Morris 25-yard-line, but once again turned it over on downs. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Saints got the ball to the 31-yardline of Minnesota-Morris, but failed to convert on fourth down. St. Scholastica threw a couple of interceptions at the end of the game as the Cougars prevailed 21-7. Third and fourth down conversions were the story of the game. CSS was just 5-for-19 on third and fourth downs. On six of their 11 possessions, the Saints had the ball in Cougars territory.
DULUTH, Minn. – It wasn’t the result the St. Scholastica football team was looking for, but the buzz around Malosky Stadium was satisfying enough as 3,547 people packed into the University of Minnesota-Duluth stadium and cheered on the first Saints football team on the school’s inaugural homecoming and the team’s first home contest tonight. Crown College arrived in Duluth and spoiled the party, however, defeating the Saints by a score of 51-13. It was Crown’s first road and conference win this season. The Saints got on the scoreboard at the end of the first half on a Christopher Henagin 8-yard touchdown run. Later in the game, Henagin scored again from seven yards out, but it wasn’t enough as the Storm prevailed 51-13. Christopher Henagin rushed for 92 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Olson was 10-of-20 for 188 yards. Keegan O’Neill had four catches for 94 yards to lead CSS in receiving. Jonathan Bennett also had four catches for 28 yards. Phil DesMarais had eight tackles to lead the Saints defensively.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team looked like it was possibly on its way to its first-ever win, but it wasn’t meant to be as the Macalester College Scots defeated the Saints 27-21 in overtime at Macalester Stadium. The Saints had many chances on the day, entering Macalester’s red zone seven times. However, CSS only capitalized on three of those chances. The Saints did convert a red zone opportunity late in the fourth quarter when it trailed 2114 with less than five minutes to play. Back-up quarterback Alex Thiry found Mike VanMassenhove on 4th-and-goal to cut the lead to 21-20 with 4:20 left to play in regulation. Kyle Hoffman then added the extra point to tie it up. The game went to overtime and CSS started with the ball. The Saints got the ball down to the 4-yard-line. On fourth down, the Saints rolled out, but no one was open and the Saints turned it over on downs. On Macalester’s second play of its possession, the Scots connected on a 22-yard touchdown pass to down the CSS 27-21. Jake Olson threw for 221 yards on 17-of-29 passing. Backup Alex Thiry threw for 57 yards on 4-of12 passing. Mike VanMassenhove had a huge day for the Saints with 11 receptions for 158 yards. Christopher Henagin rushed for 81 yards on 25 carries. Robert Bishop had seven tackles to lead the CSS defense.

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team took on the defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) champion Northwestern College Eagles and fell in its second home game 35-14 at Malosky Stadium. The story of the game for the Saints was defensive end Travis Larson, who had four sacks, all in the first half, including one for a safety. It was a fumble fest early on as the Eagles fumbled on their first possession of the game. After the Saints went three-and-out on its first possession, CSS added another first to the history books as Phil DesMarais intercepted the first pass in the program’s history. However, the Saints would fumble three plays later. Northwestern gave the ball back to the Saints when it fumbled on its second play. But, the fumbles were not done as the Saints gave it back to the Eagles on its second play. With the Eagles up 7-0 and deep in their own territory, CSS’s Travis Larson sacked the quarterback in the end zone for the safety to make the score 7-2. However, Northwestern scored the next 21 points to extend its lead to 28-2. Christopher Henagin scored a pair of touchdowns late, but the Eagles went on to win 35-14. Jake Olson was 11-of-25 for 83 yards on the night. Mike VanMassenhove had five receptions for 83 yards. Christopher Henagin had 44 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Jeremiah Martell added 11 tackles for the Saints defense.
DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team earned its first win, downing Trinity Bible College (N.D) 47-8 at Public Schools Stadium. After the Saints were stopped on fourth down at the Trinity Bible 20-yard-line on their first possession, the CSS defense would create a turnover as Phil DesMarais forced a fumble around midfield and the ball was recovered by Mike Evans. The Saints then took the ball down the field thanks to 23 yards on the ground from Christopher Henagin, who eventually punched it in from three yards out to make the score 7-0. The Saints struck again when Jake Olson connected with Mike VanMassenhove for a 44-yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-0. VanMassenhove had a big day for the Saints as he had 10 catches for 243 yards and three touchdowns. On the fourth play of the second quarter, Olson connected with VanMassenhove again, this time on a play action pass for 72 yards to make the score 21-0. Olson hooked up VanMassenhove for a third time, a 4-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-0. In the second half, Henagin scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, a two-yard option run, on the next possession to make the score 41-8. St. Scholastica followed that with its best drive of the afternoon, going 88 yards on 19 plays and taking up 12:01. The drive was capped off on a touchdown strike from back-up quarterback Alex Thiry to Harden Henry to make the score 47-8. That is how the game ended as players gave Head Coach Greg Carlson the Gatorade bath and celebrated their first win as a program.
MINNEAPOLIS – There were a lot of points scored in the Metrodome on Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Dome Day, but the St. Scholastica football team was not the squad to come out on top as Martin Luther College defeated the Saints 77-42. The Knights jumped out to a 27-7 lead, but the Saints battled back. Christopher Henagin scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to make it 27-14. The St. Scholastica defense held Martin Luther on the proceeding possession and then the Saints offense had an impressive drive going 80 yards on 14 plays, capped off by a Jake Olson, Mike VanMassenhove connection for a 26-yard touchdown to make the score 27-21. The teams exchanged touchdowns early in the second half and the score was 40-35 Martin Luther. However, the Knights then scored 30 unanswered points and won going away 77-42. Jake Olson was 21-of-36 for 258 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Christopher Henagin rushed for 78 yards on 18 carries and had one touchdown. Mike VanMassenhove had eight catches for 158 yards and three touchdowns.
DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica football team ended its inaugural season with a 49-20 loss against Martin Luther College at Public Schools Stadium. After the Knights got on the scoreboard, the Saints drove down the field and Jake Olson would sneak it in from a yard out on fourth down and the extra point by Kyle Hoffman gave the Saints a 7-6 lead. After a Preston Gunderson interception to end the first quarter, the Saints had key 41-yard pass play to Mike VanMassenhove called back due to a pass interference penalty. The Saints later fumbled on the drive. After that, Martin Luther scored the next 36 points and had a 42-7 lead. The Saints got their second touchdown of the afternoon thanks to its special teams when Tyler Hassel blocked a punt in the end zone and recovered the loose ball to make the score 42-14. After the Knights scored their final touchdown of the game, the Saints had their final score of the year when Jake Olson connected with Mike VanMassenhove for a 10-yard touchdown to make the final score 49-20. Jake Olson threw for 122 yards on 11-of-29 passing and one touchdown. Jonathan Bennett had four catches for 51 yards. Doug Moore and Shane Martin each had 11 tackles to lead the CSS defense. Moore had 3.5 tackles for a loss.
