6 season th

Nicklin enters his fifth season as an assistant. He played four years at UMD (‘96-’00) … signed Free Agent contract with the Pittsburg Penguins and played in two training camps with the team. Nicklin played four years of pro hockey in the AHL, ECHL, UHL, and CHL. He currently lives in Duluth, with wife Kelly, daughter Reese, and son Alexander.

Lenny Hofmann Assistant Coach 2nd season

Hofmann enters his second season as assistant men’s hockey coach at the College of St. Scholastica. Hofmann was a four-year letterwinner and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) All-Conference selection at Saint Mary’s Univ. (Minn.). At Saint Mary’s, Hofmann graduated with a B.A. in Public Relations in 2004. After a brief professional stint with the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League, he served four years as assistant men’s hockey coach at Saint Mary’s, before joining CSS in August of 2008.

Dave Reyelts Assistant Coach 5th season

Reyelts enters his fourth season as an assistant coach. Reyelts played for the Saints from ’94-’97. He played Junior Hockey for the Fargo-Moorhead Bears, ’93-’94. Coaching Staff

The NCHA’s 2008-09 Coach of the Year, Mark Wick, returns for his sixth season behind the bench for the Saints after guiding CSS to their first NCAA National Tournament appearance last season. Coach Wick was hired just two days before the first practice of the 2004-05 season, but still earned honorable results in the first year of a five-season campaign. Wick brought the program back to a former glory of national recognition last seen in the 1970s. In 2009, the Saints peaked at the No. 2 spot in the weekly U.S. College Hockey Online Division-III poll, holding the spot for three straight weeks starting January 19th, and also earned a number-two selection in the first official NCAA Division-III poll used to set playoff positioning released in mid-February. Wick turned the program around quickly in 2005-06 as the Saints had their first winning season in twenty years. The record caught more than a few people by surprise, but not many within the Saints hockey community as Wick has had success in every stop throughout his career. A Hermantown native, the 1985 graduate of St. Scholastica transferred from Gustavus Adolphus College prior to his junior year. He was the team’s second leading scorer his senior year with 41 points and was a scholar-athlete both years at Scholastica. After graduating, he earned a Master of Education degree from Bowling Green State University in 1989. Coach Wick’s leadership qualities were evident during a brief stint at Augsburg College where he was the assistant in the 198889 season then served as co-head coach and head coach from 1990-96. He helped lead the Auggies to MIAC prominence during that time, recording a 36-34-3 overall record. Following his time at Augsburg, Wick became an assistant coach at Wis.-Superior from 1996-2000. While at Superior he helped lead the Yellowjackets to three NCAA Frozen Four appearances (1997, 1999, 2000) and two NCHA playoff championships (1997, 2000). He is married to Linda and has three children - Anders, Carly, and Jonathon.

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The Saints saw the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows, in a matter of minutes to close their 2008-09 season. In reaching the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals, the Saints achieved a program-first when they faced off against NCHA rival Wis.-Stout in Menomonie on Mar. 14, but just two hours later, they experienced the heartbreak of defeat as the Blue Devils scored with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 1-1 tie and send Stout to the NCAA Semifinals. “It was a great hockey game,” Head Coach Mark Wick said after the contest. “Our 10 seniors put it all on the line tonight. It’s not the outcome that hurt the most; it was going into the locker room and seeing 10 senior careers come to an end.” The Saints did lose 10 players as a result of graduation, but with other departures, will return just 14 players from last year’s squad.

2009-10 Season Outlook

WHO’S BACK?

10

Leading the Saints will be another sizeable class of eight seniors, who all play key roles for CSS. Coach Wick has one junior returning from last year’s squad, and will depend heavily on the five returning sophomores from 2008-09. Offensively, the Saints lost three of their top five scorers, but return Jordan Chong (Sr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) and Jeremy Dawes (So.-Winnipeg, Man.), who each had a 20-plus point season in 2008-09. Chong has seen his scoring production go up in each of his previous three seasons with the Saints, and CSS will depend on his scoring prowess this season as well. Dawes came on as a pleasant surprise for Saints fans, and after having one of the best freshman campaigns in Saints history, will look to improve his game even more. Jordan Baird (Sr.-Port McNeill, B.C.) and Carter Davis (So.-Moose Jaw, Sask.) each scored double-digit points last season and will look to add to impressive resumes in 2009. While forwards Aaron Spotts (Sr.-Spokane, Wash.) and Jeff Gagnon (Sr.-Quesnel, B.C.) haven’t always lit up the scoreboards in their careers, they each scored key goals in the Saints’ playoff run last season. The lone junior, Riley Riddell (Jr.-Wawota, Sask.), will look for additional playing time in this season after coming over from Wis.-River Falls in the middle of last year. Defensively, the Saints lose iron man Kelly Reynolds and starting goaltender

Steve Bounds to graduation, but return four key defenders in Austin Brown (So.Lathrup Village, Mich.), Chris Meagher (Sr.-Victoria, B.C.), Dustin DeGagne (Sr.Winnipeg, Man.), and Daman Milsom (So.-Kelowna, B.C.). Their experience will be helpful for goaltenders Zach Kleiman (Sr.-Ottawa, Ont.) and Brennan Poderzay (So.-Tower, Minn.). Kleiman has played in eight career games for the Saints and has a 2-2-0 record with 73 saves for a 4.77 goals against average. Joining the 14 returners for CSS will be a young group of newcomers that Coach Wick will likely look to see contributions from immediately.

WHO’S NEW? This year’s incoming class features eight forwards, three defensemen, and two goaltenders. Three players come to the Saints by way of the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior League. Defenders Brenden Bradbury (Fr.-Monticello, Ill.) and Cody Danychuk (Fr.-Biggar, Sask.) will battle for playing time in the back line while Paul Marcoux (Fr.-Ottawa, Ont.) will fight for time as a forward. Goalie Patrick Sullivan (Fr.-Kelowna B.C.) and forward Joel Langevin (Fr.-Nanaimo, B.C.) come to the Saints by way of the Ft. William North Stars of the SIJHL. A pair of hometown teammates, forwards Chris Sinclair (Fr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) and Tyler Miller (Fr.-Fort Frances, Ont.), also played in the Superior League for Fort Frances and Thunder Bay, respectively. Forwards Garet Chumley (Fr.-Cambridge, Minn.), Brendan Kapella (Hibbing, Minn.) and walk-on goaltender Kyle Moody (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) are the lone Minnesota natives joining the team. Chumley played for the Jersey Hitmen of the EJHL, while Kapella played for the Dubuque Thunderbirds. Moody played on the Saints’ baseball team last season, but prior to that was an All-State goalie at Osseo HS. Another Jersey Hitmen, defenseman Colin Trachsel (Fr.-St. Louis, Mo.), joins the Saints as well. Brett Corcoran (Fr.-Parksville, B.C.) is the last of the junior hockey players to join the Saints, coming from the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia league. The lone transfer in this year’s incoming class is Stephane Phaneuf (So.-Winnipeg, Man./Buffalo State). The College of St. Scholastica | Duluth, Minn.

THE SCHEDULE The Saints will face off against several familiar foes in 2009-10, but with a completely new dynamic. With Lake Forest leaving the NCHA, the conference will again feature weekend series, so CSS will see more of the likes of Wis.-Superior, Wis.-Stout, St. Norbert, and the rest of the conference powerhouses. The schedule won’t be easy, but if last season’s 9-4-1 conference record is any indication, CSS will be up to the task. CSS also exorcised the demons of a 16-year regular season losing streak against Superior with a 7-2 victory over the Yellowjackets last season, and had at least one win against every team in the conference. In non-conference play, CSS will play Saint John’s (Minn.) University in Duluth for the first time in over a decade, as well as Concordia College-Moorhead, who the Saints last faced in 2006-07. The Saints will face Salem State (Mass.) College for the first time in program history and Lawrence (Wis.) University in their Thanksgiving Classic. CSS defeated Lawrence last season by a 4-3 overtime score. The Saints will face Northland College just once this season after sweeping them in a home-and-home series last year, and will travel to Hamline University after defeating

them in Duluth last year. Rounding out the non-conference schedule will be a meeting with Bethel University, who CSS last faced two years ago and fell by a 7-4 score. ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in “Tier 1” of Midwestern Universities– Master’s level. The magazine’s rankings are based upon criteria that include academic reputation, student retention, class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni support. St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The College was founded in 1912 in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by Benedictine values. With a vision of sending forth thoughtful leaders – graduates who are committed to serving and transforming the world – St. Scholastica is an academic community that offers “learning to touch the world.” The College has programs in the liberal arts and sciences along with professional career fields, in addition to 19 varsity intercollegiate athletics programs and more than 60 extracurricular opportunities. St. Scholastica has graduated more than 13,000 alumni; 97 percent of St. Scholastica graduates are typically in career fields or graduate school within six months of graduation. Location: One of the most distinctive aspects of the College is its location. Found in scenic Duluth, Minnesota, St. Scholastica’s 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior from a wooded ridge in a tranquil residential area. You are minutes from the region’s best shopping areas and a downtown that features plenty of cultural excitement. There are great opportunities in terms of internships and career contacts, as well as extraordinary social and recreational activities.

Financial Aid: Of course, college costs money. But the smart money thinks of this as an investment that will pay personal and financial dividends for a lifetime. Over 3,500 students currently enrolled at The College of St. Scholastica believe that the quality and benefits of their education outweigh the costs. Over 98 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid. In fact, the average annual award in 2009-10 was $19,000. Plus, there are literally hundreds of need and non-need based scholarships available. Campus Community: Spend any length of time on this beautiful campus and you can’t help but notice how friendly everyone is. With countless things happening on and off campus, boredom is not a problem at St. Scholastica. From the city’s Lakewalk near the shores of Lake Superior to its Skyline Drive along the hilltops, and from the College’s Reif Recreation Center and new Wellness Center to its classic Tower Hall, the combination of Duluth and St. Scholastica creates an exciting place to attend college.

About St. Scholastica

Size and Faculty: If personal attention is what you want, this is the right place. With a total enrollment over 3,500, the student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1. If you take the opportunity, you can get to know your professors and they will get to know you – usually on a first-name basis. Collectively, the faculty members’ experiences, education and teaching positions have taken them through decades and around the globe. Now they’re all right here for you.

Resources and Facilities: St. Scholastica has well-equipped classrooms, computer labs, laboratories, and learning resource centers. The science center is packed with laboratories that you won’t find at many, if any, other colleges. In addition, the College offers a number of study abroad and service learning opportunities. The acoustically superb Mitchell Auditorium hosts dozens of speakers, bands and other events throughout the school year. A Wellness Center, which opened in autumn 2004 and grew in size the summer of 2008 due to additions, houses a six-lane indoor running track, four multi-purpose courts, a climbing wall, aerobic room, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and a new weightlifting facility, as well as other features for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

MEN’S HOCKEY 2009-10

THE SAINTS ATHLETICS CLUB The College of St. Scholastica’s Athletics Department has the goal of becoming a nationally-known NCAA Division III sports program. This goal reflects our deeply held view that strong and successful sports teams benefit everyone associated with the College. The positive image generated by winning teams frequently is the first impression prospective students and their families have of our school. Winning teams give alumni and current students a source of pride and “bragging rights.” It is our commitment to keep our athletics program the best in the league and competitive with the best in the country. Our teams will always be a positive reflection of St. Scholastica’s past, present and future. We have taken many steps to strengthen our foundation and we are prepared to move forward. One step is the Saints Athletics Club, an organization dedicated to connecting supporters of CSS sports with each other and with current student-athletes while also generating the resources needed to supplement the Athletics Department’s traditional budget. As the College grows, there will always be widespread need for additional resources. The success of the Saints Athletics Club will allow the Athletics Department some degree of independence as we fund initiatives we consider essential for our future growth. If you would like to join or would like more information regarding the Saints Athletics Club please contact: Don Olson at 218-723-5934 or dolson4@css.edu

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS

T

he Northern Collegiate Hockey Association was created during the early 1980s from a combination of college teams belonging to the now-defunct International College Hockey Association and the Western Intercollegiate Hockey Association. Since its inception in 1980, the league has grown into a closelyknit group of nine strong NCAA Division III collegiate hockey programs featuring heated rivalries and intense competition. The league officially formed on June 1, 1980, when formal approval came from the administrators of the six charter members: Bemidji State University, Mankato State University, St. Cloud State University, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls and UW-Superior. League play began on an unofficial basis during the 1980-81 campaign with the six teams playing an unbalanced schedule. The 1981-82 season marked the first formal schedule of NCHA play. The College of St. Scholastica entered the league in 1983-84 to bring the team total to seven. St. Cloud State dropped out after the 1986-87 season to move to the NCAA Division I level, but with the addition of UWStevens Point at the same time, the number of league teams stayed at seven. St. Scholastica dropped out of the league following the 1990-91 season. More changes came at the end of the 1991-92 season when Mankato State moved to the Division I level and left the league. Lake Forest College was admitted in 1992-93. In the spring of 1994 St. Norbert College joined and St. Scholastica was readmitted to make it an eight team league. UW-Stout joined the NCHA in 1996-97. After the 1999 season Bemidji State, which was the only team remaining in the league affiliated with Division II, left the conference after moving to Division I. At the April 10, 2000 spring meeting the NCHA added a women’s division. Lake Forest, UW-Eau Claire, UWRiver Falls, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Superior were the five women’s teams that joined the league. UWSuperior had started a varsity women’s program in 1998-99 and UW-River Falls moved to a varsity program for the first time in 1999-2000. The Lake Forest, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point teams were all in their first year of competition in 2000-01. Finlandia University joined the league for the 2003-04 season. Marian University and Adrian College joins the women’s league this season, while St. Scholastica and St. Norbert will make it an 11-team league in 2010-11. In the men’s division the teams will play an 18-game schedule. Each team will face the six other teams three times with one school hosting a two-game series and the other one game. A league post-season tournament was instituted in 1985-86 and will consist of seven teams playing best of three (two games, plus a mini-game if needed) series in the first round. The regular season champion will get a first round bye. The semifinals will be played the following week at the top remaining seeds. The champion will be crowned the week after at the highest remaining seed. Year after year, the NCHA is recognized as one of the top small-college hockey leagues in the country. UWSuperior won its first men’s NCAA Division III national title in 2002. Five NCHA men’s teams have won NCAA Division III titles: St. Norbert College (2008), UW-Superior (2002), UW-River Falls (1988, 1994), UW-Stevens Point (1989, 1990, 1991, 1993) and Bemidji State (1984, 1986). Bemidji also won four NCAA Division II titles (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997). In 1993 and 1994 it was an all NCHA final. In 1993, UW-Stevens Point beat UW-River Falls, 4-3 in overtime, and in 1994, River Falls beat UW-Superior, 6-4.

About the NCHA

With the mission of providing quality competition for student-athletes, the NCHA’s caliber of play has risen to the point where member institutions are producing both quality players and teams. Joel Otto, a member of the 1989 Stanley Cup champion Calgary Flames, played for Bemidji State from 1981-85. In addition to the national championships, NCHA teams also play a rugged non-conference schedule.
