10 season th

The Wellsville, N.Y., native enters his seventh season as an assistant coach with the Saints. He previously spent one season as the program’s Student Assistant giving him a total of eight seasons with St. Scholastica basketball, all with Coach Staniger. Hennessy assists in all phases of the basketball program. He works primarily with the perimeter players and is in charge of the defense. In the past, Hennessy has also served as the junior varsity head coach. Off the court, he arranges team travel and coordinates the Saints’ national recruiting efforts.

Owen Johnson Assistant Coach 1st season

Johnson enters his first season as an assistant on Coach Staniger’s staff. Johnson played for the Saints from 2004-08. The Saints won two Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championships during Johnson’s time as a player and he looks for the program to continue that success. Johnson will work with the defense and the team’s strength and conditioning.

Coaching Staff

Coach Staniger begins his 10th season as the head coach at The College of St. Scholastica. Staniger is the winningest coach in program history with 116 wins at the college. His Saints squads have won two shared regular season conference crowns (‘05-’06, ’08-‘09) and four tournament titles (‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘09). Staniger led the Saints to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history in 2004. Through his first nine seasons, Staniger has produced two AllAmericans and 25 all-conference players. A fiery competitor, his teams are consistently known for their aggressive defensive pressure and up-tempo running game. “We play defense to generate offense, not to stop the other team,” says Staniger. Before coming to St. Scholastica, Coach Staniger was the head assistant coach at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. During his five seasons at Augsburg, the Auggies compiled a 94-35 record, won two MIAC championships, and he was part of a two-time coach of the year staff. He also helped direct the Auggies to two NCAA National Tournament appearances in 1998 and 1999. While at Augsburg, Staniger helped develop Devean George into a first round NBA draft choice. George was selected 23rd overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1999 NBA draft. George was the first Division III player ever selected in the first round and now has three NBA championship rings. George is currently with the Golden State Warriors. Including his success with George, Staniger has now coached the leading 3-point shooter (3-pt FG Made) in school history at both Augsburg and St. Scholastica. Staniger graduated from St. Scholastica in 1989 with dual degrees in Business Management and Sports/Recreation Management. A Chisholm, Minn., native, he played for legendary high school coach Bob McDonald who is currently the all-time winningest coach in Minnesota high school history. Before joining the coaching ranks, Staniger worked for the Fargo-Moorhead Fever of the Continental Basketball Association. A respected coach by his peers, Staniger is a former Pool ‘B’ (Independent) Representative on the West Region NCAA D-III Basketball Committee that ranks west region men’s basketball.

2009-10 Preview

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS

8

Eleven straight home victories. Eleven straight victories overall. That’s what the Saints did last season to earn the UMAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. St. Scholastica’s athletic teams have always had a flair for the dramatic, but hopefully, this season, they can earn success in a more traditional fashion. The conference championship game played out as a metaphor of the season: the Bethany Lutheran Vikings pulled out ahead of the Saints early, leading by nine points with just over two minutes left, when UMAC Tournament MVP Chris Hamers (Jr.-Onamia, Minn.) went on a tear, scoring three of four CSS three-pointers that put the Saints up for good. The fans rushed the court and celebrated an intense, hard-fought victory with the Saints, as CSS sent their four seniors out on an all-time high note. The Saints will enter the 2009-10 season with NCAA Division III’s longest current winning streak at 11 games. The Saints will have to replace four seniors, who were the heart and soul of last year’s team. Who’s Back? Despite losing the four seniors, the Saints will return key leaders from last year’s team in guards Hamers, Max Dibrell (Sr.-Duluth, Minn.), and Danny Schmitz (Jr.-Hinckley, Minn.). Schmitz was first on the team in scoring en route to receiving First Team All-UMAC honors. Schmitz averaged over 12 points per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 79% from the free-throw line. Dibrell started every game for the Saints last year and was second on the team in assists and fourth in steals. He was the defensive stopper for the Saints on the perimeter, which led him to be named the team’s co-Defensive Player of the Year. His three years of key experience under his belt will help

lead a young squad. Hamers started just four games last season, but played key minutes, averaging nearly 20 per game. He was fourth in team scoring, averaging just under 10 points per game. Hamers is a streaky shooter and can be deadly when he is on. Also returning are forward Derek Anderson (Jr.-Cook, Minn.) and guard Bryan Johnson (So.-Randolph, Wis.), who each played in over 20 of the Saints 27 games last season. Johnson scored over eight points per game, while bringing down 40 boards and amounting 22 steals. Anderson has shot 42% from the field in his career, including 37% from beyond the arc. The Saints also return a bit of size in centers Logan Schultz (Jr.-Perham, Minn.) and Evan Klema (So.-Bagley, Minn.). The duo has just 25 combined career games played under their belts, but will likely play key roles going forward for the Saints. Who’s New? Head coach David Staniger has brought in one of his largest recruiting classes in years, as eight players join the ranks of the Saints, all members of the freshman class. Key newcomers in this year’s class are Jonah Dahlman (Fr. Braham, Minn.), Brett Tester (Fr. Andover, Minn.), and Josh Kosloske (Fr. Oakfield, Wis.). Dahlman will see a lot of time in the backcourt for CSS. He was a three-time all-conference selection at Braham and won a state title his freshman year. Tester and Kosloske will be key players in the paint this season. Tester was a two-time all-conference performer for Andover and Kosloske was an AllState selection in Wisconsin. The other five newcomers are all forwards. Thad Picott (Fr.-Fridley, Minn.) joins the Saints from Fridley. Picott was an honorable mention all-conference choice. Fordes Lodin (Fr.-Two Harbors,

The College of St. Scholastica | Duluth, Minn.

Minn.) scored over 1,000 career points in high school. Pat Franko (Fr.-Rochester, Minn.) was an all-conference selection his junior and senior season. Matt Feuling (Fr.-Foley, Minn.) was an all-conference selection and an honorable mention all-area his senior season. Evan Gray (Fr.-Brooklyn Center, Minn.) was an all-city nominee at Patrick Henry HS. The eight newest Saints will join the seven veterans and need to bond quickly as Coach Staniger will have to rely on the talented youth to step up in key situations early in the 2009-10 season. The Schedule Along with fourteen conference match-ups, the Saints have several opponents, both familiar and unfamiliar, lining their nonconference schedule. 2009-10 SCHEDULE Nov. 15

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in “Tier 1” of Midwestern Universities– Master’s level. The magazine’s rankings are based upon criteria that include academic reputation, student retention, class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni support. St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The College was founded in 1912 in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by Benedictine values. With a vision of sending forth thoughtful leaders – graduates who are committed to serving and transforming the world – St. Scholastica is an academic community that offers “learning to touch the world.” The College has programs in the liberal arts and sciences along with professional career fields, in addition to 19 varsity intercollegiate athletics programs and more than 60 extracurricular opportunities. St. Scholastica has graduated more than 13,000 alumni; 97 percent of St. Scholastica graduates are typically in career fields or graduate school within six months of graduation. Location: One of the most distinctive aspects of the College is its location. Found in scenic Duluth, Minnesota, St. Scholastica’s 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior from a wooded ridge in a tranquil residential area. You are minutes from the region’s best shopping areas and a downtown that features plenty of cultural excitement. There are great opportunities in terms of internships and career contacts, as well as extraordinary social and recreational activities.

Financial Aid: Of course, college costs money. But the smart money thinks of this as an investment that will pay personal and financial dividends for a lifetime. Over 3,500 students currently enrolled at The College of St. Scholastica believe that the quality and benefits of their education outweigh the costs. Over 98 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid. In fact, the average annual award in 2009-10 was $19,000. Plus, there are literally hundreds of need and non-need based scholarships available. Campus Community: Spend any length of time on this beautiful campus and you can’t help but notice how friendly everyone is. With countless things happening on and off campus, boredom is not a problem at St. Scholastica. From the city’s Lakewalk near the shores of Lake Superior to its Skyline Drive along the hilltops, and from the College’s Reif Recreation Center and new Wellness Center to its classic Tower Hall, the combination of Duluth and St. Scholastica creates an exciting place to attend college.

About St. Scholastica

Size and Faculty: If personal attention is what you want, this is the right place. With a total enrollment over 3,500, the student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1. If you take the opportunity, you can get to know your professors and they will get to know you – usually on a first-name basis. Collectively, the faculty members’ experiences, education and teaching positions have taken them through decades and around the globe. Now they’re all right here for you.

Resources and Facilities: St. Scholastica has well-equipped classrooms, computer labs, laboratories, and learning resource centers. The science center is packed with laboratories that you won’t find at many, if any, other colleges. In addition, the College offers a number of study abroad and service learning opportunities. The acoustically superb Mitchell Auditorium hosts dozens of speakers, bands and other events throughout the school year. A Wellness Center, which opened in autumn 2004 and grew in size the summer of 2008 due to additions, houses a six-lane indoor running track, four multi-purpose courts, a climbing wall, aerobic room, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and a new weightlifting facility, as well as other features for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

MEN’S BASKETBALL 2009-10

THE SAINTS ATHLETICS CLUB The College of St. Scholastica’s Athletics Department has the goal of becoming a nationally-known NCAA Division III sports program. This goal reflects our deeply held view that strong and successful sports teams benefit everyone associated with the College. The positive image generated by winning teams frequently is the first impression prospective students and their families have of our school. Winning teams give alumni and current students a source of pride and “bragging rights.” It is our commitment to keep our athletics program the best in the league and competitive with the best in the country. Our teams will always be a positive reflection of St. Scholastica’s past, present and future. We have taken many steps to strengthen our foundation and we are prepared to move forward. One step is the Saints Athletics Club, an organization dedicated to connecting supporters of CSS sports with each other and with current student-athletes while also generating the resources needed to supplement the Athletics Department’s traditional budget. As the College grows, there will always be widespread need for additional resources. The success of the Saints Athletics Club will allow the Athletics Department some degree of independence as we fund initiatives we consider essential for our future growth. If you would like to join or would like more information regarding the Saints Athletics Club please contact: Don Olson at 218-723-5934 or dolson4@css.edu

About the UMAC

The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conference-sponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College. The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.
