Head Coach Mark Wick Coach Wick’s leadership qualities were evident during a brief stint at Augsburg College where he was the assistant in the 1988-89 season then served as a co-head coach and head coach from 1990-96. He helped lead the Auggies to MIAC prominence during that time, recording a 36-34-3 overall record.

Mark Wick Head Coach 10th Season

Mark Wick begins his 10th season behind the bench for the Saints in 2013-14. Wick, who is the program’s winningest coach with 119 wins in nine seasons, is a two-time NCHA Coach of the Year being named in 2008-09 and then again in 2011-12. The Saints finished second in the league in 2011-12 for the second time in the past three seasons. The Saints have advanced past the NCHA Peters Cup quarterfinals six of the last sevens seasons. In 2009, Wick guided CSS to its second NCAA Tournament appearance and first since the 1982 season.

Following his time at Augsburg, Wick became an assistant coach at UW-Superior from 19962000. While at Superior he helped lead the Yellowjackets to three NCAA Frozen Four appearances (1997, 1999, 2000) and two NCHA playoff championships (1997, 2000). He is married to Linda and has three children Anders, Carly, and Jonathon.

During the 2008-09 season, the Saints peaked at the No. 2 spot in the weekly U.S. College Hockey Online Division-III poll, holding the spot for three straight weeks starting January 19th. In 200910, the Saints were ranked in the top 10 of the USCHO poll for 15 straight weeks, peaking at No. 4. The Saints were back in the polls last season in the top 15 for five straight weeks, beginning on January 23rd. Wick was hired just two days before the first practice of the 2004-05 season, but still earned honorable results in the first year. Since then, Wick has brought the program back to a former glory of national recognition last seen in the 1970s. Wick turned the program around quickly in 200506 as the Saints had their first winning season in twenty years. The record caught more than a few people by surprise, but not many within the Saints hockey community because Wick has had success in every stop throughout his career. A Hermantown native, the 1985 graduate of St. Scholastica transferred from Gustavus Adolphus College prior to his junior year. He was the team’s second leading scorer his senior year with 41 points and was a scholar-athlete both years at Scholastica. After graduating, he earned a Master of Education degree from Bowling Green State University in 1989.

Assistant Coaches

Tyson Terry

Brant Nicklin

Assistant Coach 3rd Season

Assistant Coach 9th Season

Tyson Terry begins his third season on Coach Wick’s staff for the 2013-14 season. Terry, a native of Abbotsford, British Columbia, came to St. Scholastica prior to the 2011-12 season after spending one season as an assistant with the Wenatchee Wild in the NAHL. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Manhattanville College for two seasons, where he worked with the defensemen and guided the Valiants to a top 10 ranking statistically in goals-against-average both seasons.

Brant Nicklin enters his ninth season with the men’s hockey program in 2013-14. He played four years at UMD (‘96-’00) and then signed a free agent contract with Pittsburg Penguins and played in two training camps with the team. Nicklin played four years of pro hockey in the AHL, ECHL, UHL, and CHL. He currently lives in Superior, Wis., with wife Kelly and daughter Reese.

In his two years with Manhattanville, the Valiants had a combined record of 36-10-6 and were the 2010 ECAC West Conference Tournament Championship. Terry was also heavily involved in scouting/recruiting, video and statistics at Manhattanville. He monitored academic progress of players and the team had a GPA above 3.3 in his two years. Prior to coaching, Terry played college hockey at SUNY-Geneseo where he was part of an NCAA Tournament and conference championship team in 2006. He then went on to sign a pro contract with the Colorado Eagles of the CHL in 2007. Terry earned his Masters Degree in Sport Business Management in 2010 and married former UWSuperior softball standout Erin Kegley in the summer of 2012.

The landscape of the Men’s Conference was drastically changed when the University of Wisconsin state school members departed at the end of the 2012-13 season. Both the Men’s and Women’s conferences will retain their NCAA tournament automatic qualification status, meaning the conference playoff champions will gain automatic entry into the NCAA tournament. Along with the changes in membership, the NCHA Men’s and Women’s leagues will utilize common executive leadership while having separate administrative structure, constitutions and bylaws. Dr. G. Steven Larson will serve as Commissioner of both conferences, having previously served as Commissioner of the MCHA. “We are very pleased to announce these changes as we are moving into the transitional phases of our women’s and men’s conferences,” Larson said. “It was very important for us to respect and recognize the traditions of both associations while simultaneously moving forward with a new perspective to reflect the changes that have taken place. Needless to say, this is a very exciting period of progression for member institutions and our hockey programs.” Jim Olson, who served as the Director of Officials for the MCHA, will now serve in the same role for both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences. Chris Zills and Brian Monahan, who previously worked behind the scenes for the MCHA and NCHA to publicize their respective leagues, will be moving into similar, but different roles moving forward for the NCHA. Monahan will serve in the role of Director of Public Relations, taking an active role in promoting, social media, blogging and other “faces” of the media. Zills will be the Director of Sports Information, maintaining the behind-the-scenes aspect of the communications department. “Moving the eight current MCHA men’s programs forward as the NCHA brings together our men and women under one umbrella,” Adrian president & chair of the MCHA/NCHA president’s council Jeff Docking said. “We can now work on promoting growth on both fronts, while keeping 30-plus years of combined championship tradition alive.” Speaking of championships, the regular season winner in both conferences will now receive a trophy named after a significant leader in the growth of hockey. The Peters Cup - formerly given to the Men’s NCHA playoff champion - will now be given to the regular season champ. The Men’s playoff champ will win the Harris Cup, named after MSOE Director of Athletics Dan Harris, who served as the first president of the MCHA and helped get the league up and running. “We felt it was very important to honor and recognize the individuals who were so important in pioneering and fostering the development of the MCHA and NCHA,” Larson said. “Their leadership and vision have been instrumental in the success of both associations.” “I am really excited about the coming together of the two leagues and about both the synergy and energy that will result from having our men and women compete under the same name,” Slaats said. “I am also honored and humbled to have the new league playoff championship bear my name. It’s hard to believe how quickly, and how much, women’s hockey has grown since the initial formation of a women’s division in the spring of 2000. I honestly could not be happier or more proud of the outcome.” “Those of us at Concordia University are very excited to be a part of the new direction and strategic vision for our hockey conference,” MCHA DASC Chair Rob Barnhill said. “The level of competition in our new conference will be rigorous and the student-athlete experience will be greatly enhanced by participating with student-athletes from likeminded and like-missioned institutions.” The original Northern Collegiate Hockey Association dates back to 1980 and includes a lengthy history that consists of 12 NCAA National Championships won by six different members. Herb Brooks coached in the NCHA and Joel Otto played at Bemidji State before going on to win a Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames. The MCHA dates back to the 1998-99 season and has taken great strides in the past 15 years to rise to the level that is has achieved. The online home of both the NCHA Men’s and Women’s Conferences will be www.nchahockey.org. Changes to the web site will gradually take place in the coming months to reflect the exciting changes aforementioned.

2013 Induction Class Dan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82

Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.

Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93

Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season. However, even before he played for the Saints, Cane was the equipment manager of the CSS Hockey team, beginning when he was 15 years old and until his sophomore year of college. After his playing days, Cane then stepped in the coaching box as an assistant from 1983-84 before becoming head coach of the men’s team for nine years from 1985-1993. Cane accumulated a record of 104-55-12 in nine seasons and led the Saints to the 1988 and 1989 National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Championships. He was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. He had just one losing season in his nine years as the men’s coach. In 1990, Cane became the first-ever coach of the CSS Women’s Soccer program. He coached both the men’s and women’s programs from 1990-1993 before becoming the first head coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s soccer program in 1994.

1999 Baseball Team

The 1999 CSS baseball team put the program on the map. Led by late head coach John Baggs, the Saints qualified for its first NCAA Division III baseball tournament. CSS would play three extra inning games at the regional, two with top-ranked and host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and another with 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Saints would fall twice to the No.1-ranked Titans, both in 11 innings, but defeated the Pointers for the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament victory on a Justin Harriman walk-off home run in the 10th. The squad featured eight All-UMAC first team selections. Kevin Kuklinski was named the UMAC Player of the Year and Dave Schlangen was the UMAC Pitcher of the Year. Schlangen, Harriman and Leland Swenson were first team All-Midwest Region choices, while Swenson was also named an All-American. The pitching staff set a single season program record with a 1.97 earned run average, which ranked third in the nation. The staff also tied a then-NCAA record with 13 shutouts. The team’s .965 fielding percentage ranked second in the country.
