2012 Induction Class Bill Courchaine – Men’s Hockey – 1974-78

Courchaine was the netminder for St. Scholastica’s two NAIA National Men’s Hockey Championships in 1975 and ‘77. He was named the NAIA National Tournament Most Valuable Player in the 1977 and was twice named to the alltournament team. In the 1977 National Tournament he tied the record for the most saves (97) in the three games. The three-time NAIA All-American ranks third in career saves and shutouts and is fourth in career save percentage in program history. Courchaine was also recognized in the April 25, 1977 issue of Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd column.

Janice Monsaas Sayovitz – Women’s Basketball – 1984-88

Current women’s basketball assistant coach Janice Sayovitz was a standout for the Saints in the mid 80s. Known then as Janice Monsaas, she was named to the National Little College Athletic Association (NLCAA) All-Tournament team in 1988 where she was the starting center on the NLCAA National Championship team. The Duluth Central graduate was also a Midwestern Women’s Collegiate Conference (MWCC) all-league selection in 1986-87 and named to the Northern District All-Tournament team that same year. She still ranks high in many statistical categories, including the program’s leader in rebounds (812), second-most field goals made in a season (544) and fourth on the program’s all-time scoring list (1,310 points).

Tim Radosevich – Men’s Basketball – 1988-91

The men’s basketball program’s all-time leading scorer Tim Radosevich was a force for the Saints in the late 80s early 90s. Radosevich, who was the first All-American in program history, was twice named to the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) All-American team in 1990 and 1991. He was a member of two NSCAA National Tournament teams and was also named to the National Christian Basketball All-American and All-Tournament team in 1991. The two-year team captain scored a program best 1,666 points in his three seasons and ranks third with 635 career rebounds. Prior to Radosevich’s arrival the CSS men’s basketball program had a sub-.500 record. He was instrumental in turning the program around.

Desiree Budd Essler – Women’s Cross Country – 1999-2002

There may not have been a better athlete, let alone runner in St. Scholastica history than Desiree Budd. Budd becomes the first athlete to be inducted into the CSS Athletics Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. She was a three-time NAIA All-American and made the NAIA National Championship meet all four years of her career. Budd was a runnerup at the 2001 NAIA National meet and placed fourth overall in 2002. She was a two-time regional champion and twice won the title at the NAIA Mid-States Championship. In 2002, she was the individual champion at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational. She finished no lower than third in a meet in the 2001 season and holds the fastest 5k time in program history (17:41). Budd was a three-time All-UMAC choice and a three-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete All-American. The four-year team captain also won the women’s division of the Garry Bjorkland Half Marathon, part of Grandma’s Marathon weekend, in 2006.

Francis X. Shea – College President – 1971-74

Father Shea was the first male president at the college’s then 60-year history and the first chief executive who was not a member of the Duluth Benedictine order. Father Shea thought the school needed higher enrollment from its male population so he decided to start intercollegiate athletics and began with a men’s hockey program in 1972. In an address at the East High School Hockey Banquet, President Shea outlined the college’s plans for varsity hockey in the fall of 1972. He predicted that the college would produce an All-American in four years. He insisted the purpose of the program was to invite students a total educational experience. Shea was right as the men’s hockey program not only produced All-Americans by year four, but also won a NAIA National Championship. However, Shea left the college in 1974 and did not oversee the national championship. Shea was also credited in starting the all-school Christmas Party and Holiday Celebration at CSS. Shea passed away in 1977.

1987-88 Women’s Basketball Team

A year removed from losing to Concordia-Seward (Neb.) 78-76 in overtime in the NLCAA Championship, the 1987-88 women’s basketball team sought revenge in the 1988 NLCAA Championship game in Davenport, Iowa with 72-65 victory over Concordia to capture the program’s first and only national championship. En route to the national championship, the team captured its third straight MWCC championship with a perfect 10-0 mark. The team finished with a 25-6 record in which the 25 wins matched the previous year’s total matching the highest in program history. Dar Johnson, Janice Monsaas and Jodie Radosevich were named to the alltournament team. Johnson, Denise Groth and Lisa Riebel were All-MWCC selections that season.
