Head Coach Kirk Nauman accolades in the long jump at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships and Becky Huberty garnering AllAmerican accolades in the hammer throw at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Kirk Nauman Head Coach 7th Season

Prior to arriving at CSS, Nauman coached four seasons at Saint Mary’s University in Winona. During his four years at Saint Mary’s, Nauman’s success reached from the program level -- 72 Cardinal event records broken -- to the national level.

Kirk Nauman begins his seventh season as the men’s and women’s track & field coach in 2013-14. In his first six years at CSS, Coach Nauman coached the school’s first All-American in 2009, having 13 NCAA qualifiers, including five each of the past two seasons. Nauman has guided the Saints to six consecutive UMAC Women’s Outdoor Championships and four UMAC Men’s Outdoor Championships, including the last two years. His men’s and women’s teams have also won four consecutive UMAC Indoor Championships. He has been named UMAC Women’s Outdoor Coach of the Year on four occasions and the women’s indoor coach of the year the past four seasons. He was also the UMAC Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year the past two seasons. He has recruited both All-Americans in program history with Wendell Booth earning All-American

He landed at least one Cardinal athlete at an NCAA Division III Championship meet in each of his four years leading the program in Winona. Of the 17 NCAA participants from SMU, four achieved All-American status. Two Cardinal surpassed championship automatic qualifying standards while 37 more bettered provisional qualifying cuts. Eighteen of his athletes also were honored with USTFCCCA AllAcademic Team selection. Within the MIAC conference, Nauman coached 13 conference champions, three MIAC record-holders, 60 all-conference selections, and a pair of field athletes of the meet. He was also named the 2005 MIAC Indoor Coach of the Year. Nauman resides in Duluth with his wife, current CSS Intramural Sports Coordinator/Assistant Burns Wellness Commons Facility Manager Jamie Nauman.

Todd Bouchie

Robb Winterfeld

Throws, High Jump, Pole Vault Coach 4th Season

Todd Bouchie enters his fourth season as a full time track & field assistant in 2013-14. Bouchie had been a part-time assistant for the Saints since the 2005 season, coaching the throwers and high jumpers. Bouchie coached the women’s program’s first NCAA AllAmerican in 2013 as Becky Huberty placed fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Huberty also was the first Saint to compete in multiple events at a NCAA championship event as she also competed in the shot put at those championships. Bouchie also coached the first Decathlete to compete at the NCAA Championships in 2013, when Kevin Wagner placed ninth. During the 2011-12 season, Bouchie had three throwers and one multi-event athlete qualify for the NCAA Championships, including thrower Alec Seeley, who became the first Saint to qualify for both the indoor and outdoor championships in the same season. In his first two seasons he has coached four athletes named Field Athlete of the Meet at the UMAC Championships. Prior to coming over to CSS, Bouchie coached for seven years (five as an assistant, two as a head coach) at Cloquet High School. As the throwing coach for the Lumberjacks, he guided his throwers to six qualifications for the Minnesota State Track & field Championship meet. At Cloquet, he also coached many individual conference champions, and one school record holder. Bouchie was a member of the 1996 and 1997 University of Minnesota Duluth track & field teams that captured the indoor and outdoor Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) championships in both years. He was the indoor NSIC shot put champion in 1996. Bouchie graduated from UMD in 1998 with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education Teaching. He currently lives in Cloquet with his wife Jenny and daughter Alex.

The Belvidere, Illinois native graduated from Saint Mary’s in 2007 and moved on to be an assistant coach at Johnsburg Junior High School in Illinois for a year where he coached five state qualifiers. He then moved on to be the assistant track & field and cross country coach at Eastern New Mexico University where he coached sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi for two years. In his time, he had athletes break 14 school records and coached Kyle Harris to a 14th place finish in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II championships. The last two years, Gerber was the assistant track & field and cross country coach at Abilene Christian University in Texas. There he coached three national champions in LaVance Williams in the long jump (outdoor) and Amanda Ouedraogo in the triple jump (indoor) in 2012 and Desmond Jackson in the 200-meter dash in 2011. 2014 Track & Field Yearbook

Upper Midwest Athletic Conference The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the longtime athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

(1) Most amount of points = Kruse Award Winner (2) Points are determined by the number of teams participating in that particular sport. First place points will be given equivalent to the number of teams competing in that particular sport. Second place, third place, etc. in descending order. EXAMPLE If there are 8 teams competing = 1st place gets 8 points, 2nd place gets 7 points, 3rd place gets 6 points, etc. If there are 5 teams competing = 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 4 points, 3rd place gets 4 points, etc. (3) Provisionary schools and associate members are not eligible for Kruse Award and are not considered in awarding points for regular season finishes (4) If two or more teams tie for the same regular season finish spot, the point value for their corresponding finishes are added together and divided by the number of teams tied, which is then awarded to all of the tied teams. Example - If there is a two-way tie for first place, you would add 8+7 and then divide by 2 so that each team receives 7.5 points.

2013 Induction Class Dan Seeler – Men’s Soccer/Men’s Hockey – 1978-82

Seeler initially came to St. Scholastica because of the hockey program, but decided to also play soccer when the team was introduced in 1978. He was named the team’s MVP three times and still holds the men’s soccer program record for most goals scored in a game when he netted five against UMD in 1979. Seeler is only one of four players to record 10 points in a game in program history. He ranks second all-time in career goals (56) and third in points (130). He recorded the first hat trick in program history, scoring three against Mount Senario College (Wis.) in 1978. He ranks fourth on the program list with 19 goals during the 1981 season. While he was scoring goals for the soccer team, he was preventing goals for the hockey team as a goaltender. Seeler was named the team’s MVP for the 1981-82 season.

Greg Cane – Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach – 1985-93

Cane was part of the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s soccer programs for 15 years, coaching both programs and also as a player. He played for the men’s team from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter as a defender. He was a captain his senior season. However, even before he played for the Saints, Cane was the equipment manager of the CSS Hockey team, beginning when he was 15 years old and until his sophomore year of college. After his playing days, Cane then stepped in the coaching box as an assistant from 1983-84 before becoming head coach of the men’s team for nine years from 1985-1993. Cane accumulated a record of 104-55-12 in nine seasons and led the Saints to the 1988 and 1989 National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) National Championships. He was named the NSCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. He had just one losing season in his nine years as the men’s coach. In 1990, Cane became the first-ever coach of the CSS Women’s Soccer program. He coached both the men’s and women’s programs from 1990-1993 before becoming the first head coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth women’s soccer program in 1994.

Jill Tribble Koszarek – Women’s Soccer – 1992-95

Tribble was recruited to St. Scholastica by fellow Hall of Fame inductee Greg Cane in 1992. Tribble finished her soccer career third on the scoring list with 146 points. She ranks third all-time in goals scored (55) and fourth in assists (36). Tribble had an historic 1995 season for the Saints, setting program records for points (73), goals (26) and assists (21) in a season. She was named the team’s Most Valuable Player that season in leading the Saints to the program’s first winning season and first NAIA Regional appearance. Tribble is just one of two players in program history to record at least 10 points in a contest when she recorded 10 against Viterbo University (Wis.) in 1995. She is also tied for the program record for assists in a game as she recorded four assists in back-to-back games during the 1995 season. Tribble earned the NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award in 1994.

Leland Swenson – Baseball – 1997-2000

Swenson was the first CSS baseball player to a sign a professional contract with a Major League Baseball organization when he signed with the Texas Rangers. Swenson is dubbed “the greatest shortstop” in the baseball program’s history. He was named the team’s Rookie of the Year in 1997 and was a four-time first team All-UMAC selection. In 1999, he was named a NCAA Division III All-American and a first team All-Midwest Region choice. In 2000, Swenson was named the NAIA Region 3 Player of the Year and a second team NAIA All-American. Swenson was also named the UMAC Player of the Year in 2000. The two-time team gold glove recipient is tied for the program record for most hits (83) and holds the program record for RBIs (77) in a season, doing so in 2000. Swenson ranks fourth in program history in career hits (225) and fifth in runs scored (173). Swenson was part of the 1999 NCAA Division III Tournament squad and 2000 NAIA Super Regional Tournament team.

1999 Baseball Team

The 1999 CSS baseball team put the program on the map. Led by late head coach John Baggs, the Saints qualified for its first NCAA Division III baseball tournament. CSS would play three extra inning games at the regional, two with top-ranked and host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and another with 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Saints would fall twice to the No.1-ranked Titans, both in 11 innings, but defeated the Pointers for the program’s first NCAA Regional Tournament victory on a Justin Harriman walk-off home run in the 10th. The squad featured eight All-UMAC first team selections. Kevin Kuklinski was named the UMAC Player of the Year and Dave Schlangen was the UMAC Pitcher of the Year. Schlangen, Harriman and Leland Swenson were first team All-Midwest Region choices, while Swenson was also named an All-American. The pitching staff set a single season program record with a 1.97 earned run average, which ranked third in the nation. The staff also tied a then-NCAA record with 13 shutouts. The team’s .965 fielding percentage ranked second in the country.
