ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The St. Scholastica Saints women’s volleyball team saw the highs and lows of a season in 2008, but ended the season strong, fighting their way into the UMAC Championship game, where they fell to the one UMAC team they could not beat last season, Northwestern. Coach Dana Moore has consistently led the Saints to strong seasons, and 2008’s success should be an indication that, despite a large amount of turnover in the roster, we should expect nothing less than continued success from her team.

The Veterans… The Saints will be missing eight players from last year’s squad, including a great senior class which made up five of the team’s six starters. Rightside hitter Megan Baartman (Sr.-Andover, Minn.) and middle blockers Taryn McCue (Sr.-Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Rebecca Udermann (Sr.-Rosemount, Minn.) make up this year’s senior class. Baartman started 21 matches last season while the others combined for six starts, but their strong leadership goes beyond what’s seen on the court, and they will all have plenty of additional time on the court in 2009. Defensive specialist Molly Roith (Jr.Plymouth, Minn.) played in 14 matches last season while spelling then-senior Cassie Roden at the libero position. Last season’s freshman class did not see much action, but Nikki Hughes (So.-Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern HS) will be returning with one season under her belt which will undoubtedly help the Saints in 2009.

The Newcomers…

2009 Season Outlook

Coach Moore has a large recruting class joining the team, representing schools from all over Minnesota. The newcomers will play multiple roles for the Saints and try to fill the void left by eight players who will not return in 2009. Taylor Tyllia (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS), who will also play basketball for the Saints, was an Academic All-State honoree in both basketball and volleyball. She also participated in two volleyball all-star games while with the Greyhounds.

8

Alyssa McDonald (Fr.-Chisholm, Minn), a setter/outside hitter, was an all-conference selection in 2006, ’07, and ’08. She is a twotime member of the All-Duluth News Tribune team and honorable mention all-area

in 2006. She was part of the Section 7A championship team in 2007, which led to a fourth place finish at state. Paige Hardy (Fr.-Hibbing, Minn.), an outside hitter, was named All-Hibbing Daily Tribune and All-Duluth News Tribune this past season. She also was an honorable mention all-area choice and an all-conference selection.

The first half of the season will be entirely non-conference, highlighted by matches against Wis.-Eau Claire and Gustavus Adolphus, who were both ranked in the final AVCA Division-III Coaches’ Poll of 2008. The Saints fell to the Gusties last season, but CSS defeated them as recently as 2006. Wis.-Eau Claire, on the other hand, is undefeated against CSS, who they have not faced since 2005. The Saints will look to change that fortune this year.

VOLLEYBALL 2009 ALPHABETICAL ROSTER

One team the Saints are very familiar with is Wis.-Superior, who CSS will face twice this season, once on Homecoming weekend. The Saints defeated the ’Jackets 3-1 last season, and will hope that continues in 2009.

18 Megan Baartman 11 Jordan Beach

The Saints’ longest road trip of the year will be to Bloomington, Ill. to take on IllinoisWesleyan and Webster University. CSS is 1-2 all-time agaisnt Wesleyan, but have never faced Webster in the history of the two programs. Illinois-Wesleyan qualified for the NCAA Central Regional last season.

3

Paige Hardy

9

Amber Hogen

2

Nikki Hughes

The Saints went 3-1 against the WIAC, but with additional matches against Wis.-Stout, River Falls, and Stevens Point, who the Saints are a combined 6-14 against, it will not be easy to see continued success.

8

Rounding out the non-conference schedule are matches against the NAIA’s Judson University, Augsburg and Hamline of the MIAC, and one opponent to be determined. Highlighting the conference schedule for the Saints is the home opener, which will take place 24 days into the season on Sept. 25 when the Saints face off against Martin Luther just one day before Homecoming Saturday, when they will face both Bethany Lutheran and Wis.-Superior. One week later, the Saints play a match against Northwestern. These first three matches will be a great barometer of the success that CSS should expect as they were, undoubtedly, the toughest three UMAC opponents for CSS last season. The Saints then have two home games in four weeks agaisnt Minn.-Morris and Presentation before closing out the season with four straight home games against Northland, Crown, and Northwestern. The season ends with one last non-conference match-up against Wis.-Stevens Point on Halloween.

2009 Season Outlook

The Saints should qualify for the UMAC tournament, which takes place November 4 and 7 this season. With half the team experiencing the playoff atmosphere last season, this may finally be the year that an experienced squad pulls through and earns Coach Moore her third UMAC Championship.

Upper Midwest Athletic Conference

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) began in 1972 as the Twin Rivers Conference and was renamed to its current title in 1983. Seventeen schools have been a part of the UMAC over the past 30 years, and the conference currently has eight full members and four associate members in football. The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference has been successful not only on the regional level in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), but also on the national level as the league has been well-represented at numerous national tournaments. Starting in 2010-11, the UMAC will be considered an official National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-III conference, meaning the conference tournaments will feature an automatic bid to the NCAA regional or national tournament. Several participating institutions, including CSS, already boast NCAA Div.-III status. UMAC Mission/Vision Statement “The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference shall provide for its member institutions opportunity to be recognized in its region as institutions which are in the forefront of academic excellence and athletic competitiveness. UMAC Philosophy Statement The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference is a group of strong, yet diverse, colleges. We will strive to enrich the college careers of student athletes by offering a range of highly competitive amateur athletic opportunities. Our primary focus is on student athletes, with an uncompromising commitment to athletic equity and to the primacy of student academic progress. We will seek to enhance the overall richness of our collegiate programs, for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni, by supporting teams who will consistently demonstrate the values of hard work, community service, and good sportsmanship. We believe a strong intercollegiate athletics conference can also serve the economic and entertainment needs of our communities by providing consistently high quality exciting sports options. The UMAC fully endorses the NCAA Division-III philosophy, including the centralpolicy making role of fully engaged college presidents and Chancellors.

UMAC - Postseason Honors and Kruse Award

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its studentathletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conference-sponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College. The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence of young football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.
