ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS Tara Croteau
Stacy Deadrick
Assistant Coach
Head Coach
9th season
16th season
Deadrick enters her 16th season as the head coach for the St. Scholastica women’s basketball program. In her coaching career, Deadrick has coached ten All-American Scholar-Athletes. During the 2001-02 season, Deadrick and her Saints won the UMAC postseason title and played in the NAIA National Tournament. Her 2003-04 squad finished one point shy of a repeat NAIA tournament appearance, and the 2004-05 Saints took third in the UMAC regular season and qualified for the conference’s postseason tournament. As a player, Deadrick, then Pelletier, played at St. Scholastica from 1987-1991. She was a starter on the 1988-89 NLCAA National Championship team. She also earned NLCAA All-American honors as a junior and was an NAIA All-District selection for the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons. Deadrick finished her playing career at St. Scholastica as the leader in steals (436) and was third in assists (265) and eighth in scoring (1,036 points). Deadrick graduated from CSS in 1991 with a B.A. in English Education. She was an assistant coach for the Saints during the 1991-92 season. She went on to earn her M. A. in Physical Education/Athletic Administration from Idaho State University in 1994. She is married to her husband, Troy, and they reside in Esko, Minn.
Janice Sayovitz Assistant Coach 14th season
Brad Vieths Assistant Coach 2nd season
Vieths enters his second season as an assistant under Coach Deadrick. He joined the Saints in 2008 after serving four years as the head girls basketball coach in Cloquet, where his teams made the Section 7AAA semifinals three out of four years and were never ranked lower than fifth. Prior to that, he served as the head girls coach in Floodwood. Vieths, a graduate of Pillager Public schools in 1997, attended the College of St. Scholastica from 1997-2001 where he ran cross country and graduated with dual degrees in Elementary Education and Broad Area Social Sciences with a Secondary Education Licensure. Vieths also completed his M.A in Experiential Education through Minnesota State University Mankato and is working on his C.T.E through Bemidji State University. His duties include working primarily with the post positions and scouting; recruiting; running camps and clinics as well as program development. He is currently teaching Culinary Arts and Social Studies at Proctor High School.
Coaching Staff
Sayovitz returns to Coach Deadrick’s coaching staff for her 14th season with the Saints. Among her many duties, Sayovitz works with the post players where she herself played during her standout career at St. Scholastica from 1984-1988. Starting at center for the 1987-1988 National Championship team, Sayovitz ended her playing career as the program’s leading scorer (1,310) and all-time leading rebounder (812). Sayovitz, then Monsaas, also played local basketball during her high school years at Duluth Central. As a registered nurse, Sayovitz has spent the past 20 years working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Duluth Clinic. She is married to former CSS hockey standout Steve Sayovitz, and they reside in Duluth with their 13-year-old son Braeden and 10-year-old daughter Raeanna.
Croteau enters her ninth season as an assistant coach on Deadrick’s staff. Her primary duties include the development of guards as well as scouting and recruiting for the Saints. Like fellow coaches, Croteau also played for the Saints; her playing career was from 1996-2000. She left her mark on the Saints’ record books at second all-time in steals (347) and assists (266) and ninth in scoring (1,026). She was also a two-time NAIA AllAmerican Scholar-Athlete. Croteau graduated in 2000 from St. Scholastica with a B.A. in Accounting. She currently resides in Duluth and works as an accountant for Minnesota Power.

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS
2009-10 Season Outlook
The Saints return all five starters from last season and now a young team a year ago is an experienced team. About 93-percent of the team’s total scoring out-put last season is back this season. CSS struggled out of the gate, losing its first five games in 2008-09, but had nice wins over Northland College and Bethany Lutheran College at the end of the season to make the UMAC Postseason Tournament. If the Saints can get more consistent scoring and limit the turnovers, then they should compete for a UMAC Championship.
8
Who’s Back The Saints will be led by senior guard Kirsten Haukom (Sr.-Marshall, Minn.), who was a first team AllUMAC selection last season. Haukom led the Saints in scoring (11.3) and rebounds (5.4) in 2008-09. Haukom, who was the team’s Most Valuable Player last year, is 19th in program history in career points. Joining Haukom in the backcourt will be senior Katie Christensen (Sr.-Elk River, Minn.) and sophomore Erin Morstad (So.-Fergus Falls, Minn.). After suffering injuries her first two seasons, Christensen had a relatively healthy 2008-09 season and was second on the team in scoring, averaging 8.7 points per game. For the second straight season, Christensen was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. Morstad led the Saints with 80 assists in her freshman campaign. She was fifth in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio. Also back on the perimeter is junior Katie Kimm (Jr.-Mora, Minn.) and sophomores Taylor Fellbaum (So.-Minong, Wis./Northwood) and Shannon Lehikoinen (So.-Superior, Wis.). Kimm played in all 26 games last season and was valuable off the bench. Both Fellbaum and Lehikoinen are streaky shooters and can be dangerous from beyond the arc. Fellbaum was named the team’s Best First-Year Player and also received the Hustle Award. Inside, senior Alexa Leighton (Sr.-
Superior, Wis.), junior Kelly Cinquegrani (Jr.-Buffalo, Minn.), sophomore Laura Amys (So.-South Range, Wis./ Superior) lead the returnees. Leighton had 106 rebounds and was second on the squad with 16, 3-point field goals. Cinquegrani was third on the team in scoring averaging 6.8 points per game and in rebounds with 127. Amys had a solid freshman season as she led the team with 43 blocked shots and was second with 138 rebounds. Also returning down low is senior Christine Bryant (Sr.-Carlton, Minn.) and sophomore Laura Wappes (So.Cloquet, Minn.). Both saw limited action last season and will look to see more playing time this year. Who’s New Stacy Deadrick landed a solid recruiting class of five freshmen that will fit the program’s needs. Also, joining the squad is senior Britta Suek (Sr.-Fergus Falls, Minn.), who participated on the CSS track & field team the last three years. Guard Ashlee Blegen (Fr.-Minong, Wis./Northwood) was the Superior Daily Telegram Player of the Year her senior season. She also was selected to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division 4 All-Star Game. She led Northwood High School to the program’s first conference championship and regional championship. Forward Bri Allen (Fr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) was an honorable mention all-conference selection her junior season and was captain her senior year at Henry Sibley High School. Allen scored 723 points and collected 548 rebounds in three years at Henry Sibley and also recorded 74 blocked shots. Center Taylor Tyllia (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./East) was an Academic AllState recipient in both basketball and volleyball. Tyllia had 73 blocked shots last season at Duluth East High School. Tyllia also plays for the CSS volleyball team. Guard Tina Ewing (Fr.-Maple Grove, The College of St. Scholastica | Duluth, Minn.
Minn./Osseo) was named the Most Improved player by her team her senior season. Ewing was part of the section champion Osseo High School team in 2008. She also runs cross country for the Saints. Guard/forward Katy Mickelson (Fr.-Saginaw, Minn./Proctor) was an Academic All-State basketball and softball player at Proctor High School. Mickelson was an all-conference selection in soccer and basketball. Schedule The Saints will have just two home games before the end of the calendar year, but will be at home for six of their eight games in the month of January. CSS opens up the season at North Central University on November 17th. They will then participate once again in the Pointer Tip-off Tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin2009-10 SCHEDULE Nov. 17

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in “Tier 1” of Midwestern Universities– Master’s level. The magazine’s rankings are based upon criteria that include academic reputation, student retention, class sizes, student-faculty ratio and alumni support. St. Scholastica provides intellectual and moral preparation for responsible living and meaningful work. The College was founded in 1912 in the Catholic intellectual tradition and is shaped by Benedictine values. With a vision of sending forth thoughtful leaders – graduates who are committed to serving and transforming the world – St. Scholastica is an academic community that offers “learning to touch the world.” The College has programs in the liberal arts and sciences along with professional career fields, in addition to 19 varsity intercollegiate athletics programs and more than 60 extracurricular opportunities. St. Scholastica has graduated more than 13,000 alumni; 97 percent of St. Scholastica graduates are typically in career fields or graduate school within six months of graduation. Location: One of the most distinctive aspects of the College is its location. Found in scenic Duluth, Minnesota, St. Scholastica’s 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior from a wooded ridge in a tranquil residential area. You are minutes from the region’s best shopping areas and a downtown that features plenty of cultural excitement. There are great opportunities in terms of internships and career contacts, as well as extraordinary social and recreational activities.
Financial Aid: Of course, college costs money. But the smart money thinks of this as an investment that will pay personal and financial dividends for a lifetime. Over 3,500 students currently enrolled at The College of St. Scholastica believe that the quality and benefits of their education outweigh the costs. Over 98 percent of full-time undergraduate students receive financial aid. In fact, the average annual award in 2009-10 was $19,000. Plus, there are literally hundreds of need and non-need based scholarships available. Campus Community: Spend any length of time on this beautiful campus and you can’t help but notice how friendly everyone is. With countless things happening on and off campus, boredom is not a problem at St. Scholastica. From the city’s Lakewalk near the shores of Lake Superior to its Skyline Drive along the hilltops, and from the College’s Reif Recreation Center and new Wellness Center to its classic Tower Hall, the combination of Duluth and St. Scholastica creates an exciting place to attend college.
About St. Scholastica
Size and Faculty: If personal attention is what you want, this is the right place. With a total enrollment over 3,500, the student to teacher ratio is 13 to 1. If you take the opportunity, you can get to know your professors and they will get to know you – usually on a first-name basis. Collectively, the faculty members’ experiences, education and teaching positions have taken them through decades and around the globe. Now they’re all right here for you.
Resources and Facilities: St. Scholastica has well-equipped classrooms, computer labs, laboratories, and learning resource centers. The science center is packed with laboratories that you won’t find at many, if any, other colleges. In addition, the College offers a number of study abroad and service learning opportunities. The acoustically superb Mitchell Auditorium hosts dozens of speakers, bands and other events throughout the school year. A Wellness Center, which opened in autumn 2004 and grew in size the summer of 2008 due to additions, houses a six-lane indoor running track, four multi-purpose courts, a climbing wall, aerobic room, state-of-the-art locker rooms, and a new weightlifting facility, as well as other features for ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

THE SAINTS ATHLETICS CLUB The College of St. Scholastica’s Athletics Department has the goal of becoming a nationally-known NCAA Division III sports program. This goal reflects our deeply held view that strong and successful sports teams benefit everyone associated with the College. The positive image generated by winning teams frequently is the first impression prospective students and their families have of our school. Winning teams give alumni and current students a source of pride and “bragging rights.” It is our commitment to keep our athletics program the best in the league and competitive with the best in the country. Our teams will always be a positive reflection of St. Scholastica’s past, present and future. We have taken many steps to strengthen our foundation and we are prepared to move forward. One step is the Saints Athletics Club, an organization dedicated to connecting supporters of CSS sports with each other and with current student-athletes while also generating the resources needed to supplement the Athletics Department’s traditional budget. As the College grows, there will always be widespread need for additional resources. The success of the Saints Athletics Club will allow the Athletics Department some degree of independence as we fund initiatives we consider essential for our future growth. If you would like to join or would like more information regarding the Saints Athletics Club please contact: Don Olson at 218-723-5934 or dolson4@css.edu

Upper Midwest Athletic Conference
The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conference-sponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College. The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.
