Coaches and Staff

Head coach Dave Reyelts enters his 10th season at the helm of The College of St. Scholastica’s women’s soccer team. He is the winningest coach in program history with 128 wins at the college. His 2008 team again claimed the UMAC Regular Season and the Postseason UMAC Tourney Title with a perfect 14-0 record in the conference. He led his team to a second straight NCAA Division III national tournament. His teams have won either the regular season or conference tournament title in each of the past nine years. The ’06 Saints hosted the UMAC Tournament as the top seed but fell in the championship game in double overtime. A five-time winner of the UMAC Coach-of-the-Year award, Reyelts has compiled an overall record of 128-60-9 since taking over the program in 2000. That includes a stretch of 44 consecutive wins in regular season UMAC play including the final two conference games of the 2003 schedule. DAVE REYELTS Head Coach, 10th Season Under Reyelts’ tutelage, the Saints have produced one NAIA All-American, 19 NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans, an NAIA Region-III Player-of-the-Year, four UMAC Players-of-the-Year, (218) 723-6603 22 NAIA Region-III All-Region players, and 46 UMAC All-Conference performers. dreyelts@css.edu A proponent of excellence in the classroom as well as on the soccer pitch, 47 of Reyelts’ players have earned Academic All-UMAC honors while nine have been named to an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete Team. During his playing days, Reyelts—also an assistant with the hockey program and men’s and women’s track teams—was a goalkeeper on St. Scholastica men’s soccer team (1995-97). The Duluth, Minn., native holds records for career saves and saves percentage for the Saints. Nimble outside the keepers’ box, he was also a hard-checking forward on the Saints hockey team during those years. Coach Reyelts owns a lengthy resume of coaching positions in the Northland having coached hockey, softball, and track and field at the youth, high school, and college levels. In the summer months Reyelts continues to work with the local Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club. Reyelts is married to Ann, a Duluth/Superior teacher. They are the parents of 5-year old Kennan and 3-year old Andrew.

Coach Kresky enters his sixth season with the Saints. He was the CSS women’s assistant coach in 2001 and 2002 and returned to work with the women’s team in 2007 after spending three seasons as the head coach of the Duluth Denfeld High School girl’s team. A two year captain and four year player for the Saints men’s program, Kresky also has valuable on-field experience. During his CHAD KRESKY playing years from 1997-2000, the Asst. Coach, 6th Season midfielder was named UMAC AllConference Honorable Mention (1999) and All-Conference Second Team (2000). An ’01 CSS graduate, Kresky earned his Master’s of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation from the College during his first coaching stint with the women’s team. Kresky is also employed with United Health Care in Duluth.

MacLean begins his fifth season as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach. A local graduate from Duluth East High School, MacLean played four years with the Greyhound varsity program but suffered a career-ending injury following his senior campaign. Morgan stepped across the sideline directly into a coaches role after high school as he joined the highly successful Greyhound MORGAN MACLEAN girls’ program where he led the Asst. Coach, 5th Season ninth grade squad for three years while assisting with the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. He then coached in the Marshall School boy’s program for a season before joining St. Scholastica the following year. MacLean leads the Saints JV program along with helping both the men’s and women’s programs with recruiting. In the summer, he coaches for the Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club.

The College of St. Scholastica | Duluth, Minn.

WOMEN’S SOCCER 2009 Lammi returns for her fourth season on the sidelines as a coach for the Saints. Following a stellar career in which she set nearly every goalkeeping record for the Saints, Lammi made the transition from player to coach where she lends her talents to work with the team’s keepers. Kristin was a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, KRISTIN LAMMI three-time NAIA All-Region-III Asst. Coach, 4th Season team member, and a three-time All-UMAC performer. She was also an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete as well as Academic AllUMAC in both ‘04 and ‘05. Kristin lives in Duluth with her son Evan.

Lahti returns for her second season as an assistant to Coach Reyelts’ Saints. Like much of the staff, Lahti comes to the coaching staff after a four-year playing career at the college in which she earned plenty of honors as a defender. The Duluth native is a two-team All-American Honorable Mention on the Saints’ 2004 and 2005 NAIA Regional Tournament PAM LAHTI Asst. Coach, 2nd Season team. She was also named to the all-region first team both seasons.

Injuries hampered the career of first-year graduate assistant Alyssa Wilson during her threeyear career with the Saints, but her intelligence and skill made assigning her to coaching duties an easy decision for head Coach Dave Reyelts. Wilson is in her first year in the College’s Occupational Therapy Master’s program. ALYSSA WILSON Grad. Asst., 1st Season

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS Coach Dave Reyelts had one of his most successful campaigns in 2008 as the Saints earned their second straight trip to the NCAA Regional tournament. The team also set a new program record for wins in a second with 20 while having just three losses and will return the vast majority of the key players with one major subtraction -- all-time St. Scholastica leading scorer Robin Johnson (’08). The Saints will be looking for people to step up on offense, but much of a strong defensive corps returns, so 2009 looks to be another successful season for CSS.

The Veterans… Ten seniors return for CSS, all of which have experience starting for the Saints, but CSS is far from top-heavy as several underclassmen have and will continue to contribute mightly for Coach Reyelts’ club. Jen Krokum (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) has continued to improve over her career for CSS and had a breakout season in 2008, scoring 16 goals and proving herself a reliable scoring option for Coach Reyelts. Losing the team’s leading scorer for the past four seasons in Johnson, the Saints will need continued production from Krokum to stay strong on offense. Midfielder Angie Groh (Sr.-Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) will get more touches in 2009 in addition to Krokum. She has been consistent for the Saints in her career, scoring at least five goals in each of the past three seasons.

2009 Season Outlook

Defenders Abby Arrowsmith (Sr.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), Amanda Hakala (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central HS), Cortney McKenzie (Sr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Ellyn Litecky (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) all return, as they, along with goaltenders Bailey Mahlum (So.Bismarck, N.D.) and Erin Olejnicak (So.Brainerd, Minn.) allowed just 18 goals last season compared to 70 scored by the Saints’ offense. Rounding out the senior class are versatile midfielder/defender Beth Flesvig (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS) and forwards Katie Gaydos (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Melisa Entinger (Mound, Minn./Holy Trinity HS).

in Mahlum and Olejnicak. At the rate she played in her first 10 appearances, Olejnicak looks on-pace to shatter records in goals against and save percentage, saving nearly 90% of the shots against her and posting a 0.33 GAA in 2008. Mahlum’s numbers were also impressive as she posted a 1.05 GAA and a 12-2-0 record in the net. Another young defender, Megan Flesvig (So.-Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS) saw signifcant playing time including a few starts in 2008 and should continue to contribute for CSS. On the offensive side, the Saints have forwards Nicole Brandt (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./ Lourdes HS) who played in a career-high 21 games in 2008, and pair of sophomores, Bailey Campbell (So.-Clancy, Mont./Helena HS) and Amanda Smerz (So.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) who appeared in 17 games each last season. The Saints had six other members of last year’s recruiting class see action in 2008, so Coach Reyelts has plenty of reason to expect continued success, especially taken into consideration the deep freshman class he will bring to CSS for 2009 to join them.

2009 Season Outlook

Additionally, Coach Reyelts has seven local products joining his squad for 2009. Joey Moore (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) joins the team as a defender who played on two Minn. State Tournament teams. If the name seems familiar, it is because she is the daughter of Saints head volleyball coach Dana Moore. Joining her is a former Duluth East teammate, Megan Stingle (So.Duluth, Minn.), who is a two-time Duluth News Tribune Player of the Year as well as a three-time all-area selection.

Cassandra Alverez (Fr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) joins the Saints as a multi-year starter for her Two Harbors Agttes during her prep career, and midfielder Tessa Jacobson (Fr.-Evelth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) brings six years of varsity soccer experience to the program. Hannah Roy (Fr.-Cloquet, Minn.) led her team in scoring in 2008 while also being named to her second Duluth News Tribune All-Area team and being named All-Lake Superior Conference as a forward. Theresa Magliano (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) rounds out the class as a three-year starter and 2008 All-Lake Superior Conference selection. (cont’d on page 13) www.csssaints.com

The Saints kick off their season with a trip to London, England which will include exhibition games against some of the best talent from across the pond, including the London Academy team and Chester City. Upon returning stateside, the attention shifts to key opponents in the midwest regional, starting with the home opener against Wis.Superior. The two teams have not met since 2002, but CSS is 7-0-0 against the Yellowjackets. From there, CSS takes on Macalester College. The Saints defeated the lady Scots in the second game of last season by a 3-1 score. Wis.-River Falls has proven to be a tough opponent for the Saints over the years, with a scoreless tie and a Saints’ 3-2 overtime victory between the teams in the past two seasons. For the second straight season, the Saints will travel to Moorhead, Minn. for the Cobber Classic. This year, they take on the host Cobbers, who narrowly defeated the Saints last season, as well as Principia College, who St. Scholastica has never faced before. Rounding out the non-conference schedule is Augsburg College, who handed St. Scholastiuca one of two regular season losses last season by a 1-0 score. The Saints will be looking for payback in Minneapolis on Oct. 7. St. Scholastica has had no problems capturing the UMAC regular season championship the past few seasons, but slowly, the field has been catching up, and the race for the title University of Wis.-Superior (Non-Conf.) may be closer than ever in 2009. Through their first 13 match-ups with conference opponents in 2008, the Saints won by at least two goals in each game, but in the regular season finale, Northland held them to just one goal and the Saints had to rely on strong defense to pick up the victory. In the UMAC postseason tournament, the tough play continued as Minn.-Morris and Northwestern both took the Saints to the wire in one-goal games. The young Morris squad will return a large portion of their team and Northwestern has been a perennial challenger to the Saints, so the challenges will continue for St. Scholastica The home opener, as stated, is Sept. 1 against Wis.-Superior, with the road opener just three days later at Macalester College. Homecoming weekend is Sept. 25-26, with the Saints hosting Martin Luther and Bethany Lutheran in conference play.

The Final Word… The UMAC has gotten stronger and stronger, and the St. Scholastica Saints will have to fight harder than ever if they hope to win the regular season championship, and contend for an NCAA tournament bid.

Upper Midwest Athletic Conference

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) began in 1972 as the Twin Rivers Conference and was renamed to its current title in 1983. Seventeen schools have been a part of the UMAC over the past 30 years, and the conference currently has eight full members and four associate members in football. The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference has been successful not only on the regional level in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), but also on the national level as the league has been well-represented at numerous national tournaments. Starting in 2010-11, the UMAC will be considered an official National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-III conference, meaning the conference tournaments will feature an automatic bid to the NCAA regional or national tournament. Several participating institutions, including CSS, already boast NCAA Div.-III status. UMAC Mission/Vision Statement “The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference shall provide for its member institutions opportunity to be recognized in its region as institutions which are in the forefront of academic excellence and athletic competitiveness. UMAC Philosophy Statement The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference is a group of strong, yet diverse, colleges. We will strive to enrich the college careers of student athletes by offering a range of highly competitive amateur athletic opportunities. Our primary focus is on student athletes, with an uncompromising commitment to athletic equity and to the primacy of student academic progress. We will seek to enhance the overall richness of our collegiate programs, for all students, faculty, staff, and alumni, by supporting teams who will consistently demonstrate the values of hard work, community service, and good sportsmanship. We believe a strong intercollegiate athletics conference can also serve the economic and entertainment needs of our communities by providing consistently high quality exciting sports options. The UMAC fully endorses the NCAA Division-III philosophy, including the centralpolicy making role of fully engaged college presidents and Chancellors.

UMAC - Postseason Honors and Kruse Award

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its studentathletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 16 conference-sponsored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their first outright victory since 1998 and first overall since 2000. The Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contender Northwestern College. The 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season conference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place finishes. The second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet field teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence of young football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.

ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS The 2008 season kicked off on a high note for the Saints, as they edged out a key Central Region rival in Aurora (Ill.) College by a double overtime score of 2-1. It was a start of a series of close games for the cardiac kids, who started the season out 5-0-0 including two more double overtime victories over Wis-River Falls and Wis.-Oshkosh. The Saints positioned themselves perfectly after five games, the best start in coach Dave Reyelts’ nine-yeer career, but saw their win streak come to an end at home when facing Augsburg College. The Saints played the Auggies tough, but weren’t able to solve their goaltender and walked away with their first loss of the season by an 0-1 score. CSS came back three days later and faced another tough opponent in Concordia-Moorhead, and again, were unable to solve the defense and fell for the second straight game at home for the first time since 2003. Coach Reyelts’ squad righted the ship quickly, as three days later, conference play opened with a pair of victories against Northwestern and Crown where CSS outscored their opponents 8-1. It would be the first of 14 straight victories for CSS as the Saints went undefeated in conference play including seven wins by at least four goals and ten by at least three. During that time, the Saints saw some record-setting performances, including the pinacle of the career of Robin Johnson (’08), who, after four spectacular seasons with the Saints, became the school’s all-time scoring leader with 168 points including 65 goals. Johnson broke the record on Oct. 11 against Martin Luther in the same game that the Saints earned the 200th victory in program history. Earning her spot in the record books, Angie Groh (Sr.-Andover, Minn.) tied a program single-game record when she earned four assists against Northwestern on Sept. 19. The Saints set a team records in wins in a season with 20, as well as tying the record for fewest losses with three. The record setters weren’t the only ones having impressive

seasons, as Jen Krokum (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) broke out in 2008 with 34 points, doubling her output through two seasons. The Saints defense, led by Amanda Hakala (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central HS) and Ellyn Litecky (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./ East HS), allowed just 18 goals on the season, including nine shutouts by goaltenders Bailey Mahlum (So.-Bismarck, N.D.) and Erin Olejnicak (So.-Brainerd, Minn.). The frosh combined for a goals against average under one (0.77) and a near-.800 save percentage. Altogether, it added up to the Saints’ first NCAA Central regional ranking -- 12th on Oct. 22 -- and another UMAC regular season championship. Despite some challenges in the postseason tournament, the Saints were able to sweep the UMAC titles for 2008 with a pair of one-goal victories over Minn.-Morris and Northwestern and earn their second-straight bid to the NCAA Championship. The Saints faced off with Carleton College on a cold, wet field in Northfield, Minn. in their first round match-up and coud not get their offense started, mustering two shots against a stout Carleton defense. It, of course, would not be enough. The Saints played strong defensively, but the Knights were able to slip two goals past them for the victory. The Saints said goodbye to a strong senior class, including Johnson, and midfielders Kristen Stangel (’08) and Sara Olson (’08). The two combined for 28 points in their senior campaigns, and helped lead the Saints to four succesful seasons. Olson finished 18th on the program’s all-time scoring list with 54 points in three seasons. The 2008 season finished on a low note, but still with plenty of reason for optimism for the future as 11 freshman each saw plenty of playing time and a junior class of 10 gained another year of experience before moving into the role of seniors for 2009.
