Head Coach Steve Pfingsten His coaching style is one of encouragement, support and positive reinforcement. Each and every team member is valued and respected. Coach Pfingsten emphasizes improvement, and the Cross Country physiology-based training program is designed to enable each runner to become the best runner he or she can be.
Steve Pfingsten Head Coach 25th Season
Dr. Steve Pfingsten enters his 25th season coaching cross country at The College of St. Scholastica in 2014. He has been the head coach for 23 years. Under the guidance of Coach Pfingsten, six teams and 18 individuals have competed in National Cross Country Championships. The Saints have won 19 UMAC championships in the past 12 years and have earned a total of 131 all-conference awards and 10 individual championships. Coach Pfingsten has been named conference coach of the year 18 times. In 2013, he coached Chelsea Johnson to the school’s first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship. As a former professor in the School of Education at the College, Dr. Pfingsten knows and recognizes the importance and demands of the students’ education and is very supportive of team members in their pursuit of academic excellence. The cross country teams excel in the classroom year in and year out. Coach Pfingsten’s Christian faith is very important to him and is reflected in his approach to life and coaching. The Pfingstens live in Duluth less than two miles from campus.
Pfingsten also guided the women’s team to a national ranking in 2013 and had three runners earn AllRegion laurels, the most in a given season in program history. Coach Pfingsten is known as an enthusiastic, positive, and knowledgeable coach with a great love for cross country. He believes the sport greatly enriches the college experience. He brings a wealth of cross country and life experiences to his coaching. Coach Pfingsten’s teams train hard and intelligently while having fun at the same time.

2014 Induction Class Del Genereau – Men’s Hockey Coach/Athletic Director – 1972-1977
Genereau was hired by fellow St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Famer President Father Francis X. Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 7236-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.
Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77
Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.
Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96
Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.
Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000
Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. She currently ranks second all-time in the St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball program with 1,574 career points. She led the team in scoring in three different seasons and was a member of back-to-back UMAC Championship squads. Quale has the most field goals made in a career in program history (624) and also ranks in the top 10 in career rebounds (497), free throws made (196) and steals (190). She was a four-time All-UMAC selection and was also named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Quale was the recipient of the 1997-98 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.
Chris Lorentz – Softball – 1997-2001
Lorentz holds numerous program records for the CSS Softball team. She is the only player in program history to record at least 100 hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases in a career. The two-time NAIA All-Region selection holds program records for games played in a career (183), runs scored in a career (175) and season (50), triples in a career (18) and stolen bases in a season (32) and career (109). The 109 stolen bases is tied for the Minnesota Collegiate record. She ranks second all-time in career hits (209) and is a four-time All-UMAC selection. She is a member of CSS Softball’s 25th Anniversary Team and was a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2001. She was also a two-time NAIA ScholarAthlete nominee. Lorentz also played soccer at CSS where she was named all-conference and a team captain in 1998.
Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002
Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five. Runbeck was named NAIA First Team All-Region, Honorable Mention NAIA AllAmerican, UMAC Player of the Year and Team MVP that season. Career goals was another record that Runbeck had to relinquish last fall to Andrew Jenkins. Runbeck has the second-most career goals (57) and assists (43) in program history. Runbeck was a four-time all-conference selection, including a two-time first team choice. Runbeck also played four years as defenseman on the men’s hockey team and was named to the NCHA All-Academic Team in 2002.
