JMZ BEYOND EMPIRE STATE OF MIND

NYC MAPPING + RESEARCH | WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY SPRING 2015

Introduction In the studio “JMZ Beyond Empire State of Mind, our objective was to examine the territory created by the JMZ Subway line as it travels through Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. These linear transportation corridors of the JMZ subway lines traverse many neighborhoods, creating territorial divisions, awkward street geometries, compromised ecologies, acoustical problems and storm water and sea level challenges. There is also a connective tissue of a growing city facilitating development, jobs, communities and micro climates. Our research documents the physical qualities the train creates as it operates above and below ground passing through different geographic conditions. Issues of climate change, immigration, security, population growth, financial inequity, alternative transportation, urban ecology are also considered. The goal of this research is to develop projects that will operate across scales in considering enhanced connectivity at the city and neighborhood level and also more specific formal proposals at the building scale.
