1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS Three exercises were complete to explore architectural techtonics. These exercises would help us in designing and developing our final design project.
1.1 POINT/LINE/PLANE
PRECEDENT
A place to lie down, sit up, stand and walk
Straight lines and sections combine to create a volumetric form that gives the illusion of a curving seat.
This project explores the progression of a point to a line, and a line to a plane.
PRECEDENT Hollow square sections are put together at different angles to create the illusion of a curved form.
1.1 POINT/LINE/PLANE ON GROUND My model creates a space for people to gather, sit, walk, lie down and stand. It begins at a POINT and flows and curves through the space with LINE that slopes down to create slightly elevated PLANES for people to occupy
MODEL Made of 300gsm paper, scored to fold at different angles and curves and arranged into a curved landform. The different angles of the planes reflects light and plays with shade and shadow.
1.2 MASS Solid and void, darkness and light, touch and see This project involves making a section cut through the ground to expose a carved space beneath the surface.
PRECEDENT COLLOSEUM Mass rock structure. Its scale creates sense of importance. Solid material adds to sense of mass and gravity.
PRECEDENT
TADAO ANDO | CHURCH OF LIGHT Interesting use of light to create emphasis on the solidity of the space's material. Allows streaks of light to stream through the cross to create stark contrast between dark and light.
1.2 MASS BELOW GROUND I have created 3 distinct carved spaces below ground as well as two access points. The ground mass that has been cut is shown as white to create more of a contrast between the cut and the dark spaces underground.
NARRATIVE The narrative of these spaces is that it represents a person's experience of grief. A person will fall into the dark space, faced with the choice to struggle up the rocky, narrow tunnel upwards or farther down . The first space filters concentrated light into the space, the second lowest space has muted light from the space above, and the third is where the y experience a heavy atmosphere, surrounded by darkness and solid impenetrable mass.
1.3 FRAME & INFILL View of the sky, view of the horizon, view of the ground.
PRECEDENT
This project explores focusing and controlling views outwards using frames and infill elements.
ROTORUA MUSEUM, NEW ZEALAND Similar design to vernacular german architecture (Fachwerkhauser) and consists of intricate timber frames with plaster and glass infill.
PRECEDENT
SHIKI TOU | AZUMA MAKOTO
Sculptural piece uses simple steel cubic frame and a fine tree suspended with rope as the infill element. Infill seems to defy gravity and creates illusion of floating in frame.
1.3 FRAME & INFILL ABOVE GROUND In this model, I played with the idea of the frame being temporary and the infill being static. The frames look light, broken and disjointed while the cube infill looks like a floating mass structure with platforms and walls orbiting it. When a person enters the space, the cube immediately demands their attention. As they ascend the platforms, the walls control their view inwards until the final highest platform where their view to the outside is clear.
MODEL The frame is made of balsa sticks while the infill is made of white card, black foam core for the cube and string.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS
4
Herring Island seems to be a quiet retreat in the middle of a busy city. The tall patches of vegetation that line the trail seem to create a sense of intrigue for visitors, making them wonder what is around the corner of the trail or what hides in the clearing.
2 0
My chosen site enhances these elements of intrigue, exploration and isolation because of its dense vegetation. It lies away from the trail and on the edge of the island, creating a bridge between the outside world and the quiet environment of the island.

Vegetation
When deciding my site, I considered vegetaion and the circulation of people to be imporatant as I wanted my site to be somewhere away from the normal flow of people and partially hidden in vegetation to bring an element of exploration and discovery. I also considered sites that were on the edge of the island so that the pavilion would have both peaceful and noisy sections.
2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN Exploration, noise and silence, discovery, chaos, peace
CONCEPT #1
My first conceptacle explored the idea of the three zones being arranged vertically, as well as using walls or panels to control the user's view. I also liked the idea of the columns from the zone ABOVE GROUND crossing zones and going down to the BELOW GROUND zone. This would create a connection between the zones.
CONCEPT #2
It was difficult to develop my concept. I tried to develop the underground space this time, as my first conceptacle played with the other two zones. The BELOW GROUND aspect would go into the hill and would be connected to the other zones with a ramp. Columns from above would create obstacles for the visitors to navigate around. I also did research on how to design an entrance to suggest an interior space without showing all of it.
CONCEPT #3
I returned to my frame and infill model and my first concept and decided to adjust the scale. The original concept of exploration was too vague, therefore I developed the contrast between Herring Island and its surroundings, chaos and clarity, noise and silence. I wanted to make the cube in the centre the most interesting space, possibly holding the secret, as it draws people's attention.
2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT While developing the design, I took on a phenomenological approach and developed my ideas with the visitor's journey and experience in mind. In terms of the circulation between the three zones, ramps and stairs would connect each zone. The visitor would enter into the BELOW GROUND space first, then ascend into the ON GROUND zone, then to ABOVE GROUND zone inside the cube and platforms. The ramps and the cube would guide the visitors' journey through the pavilion so that they would discover the secret inside the cube. PLAN
I wanted to find a way that I could show all the spaces in my pavilion clearly, as a floor plan may oversimplify it given that the frames, beams and columns aren't restricted to one zone. So I decided to make an axonometric floor plan that would show all the spaces and how the zones come together. SECTION A-A
3.0 FINAL DESIGN Chaos and Clarity, Noise and Peace My final design explores the idea of chaos and clarity which reflects how Herring Island is a quiet retreat into nature in the middle of a busy city. This is explored through the disjointed and chaotic beams and and pillars, which in turn create a chaotic journey through the space. The moment of clarity comes when they find their way into the cube which gives a retreat from the chaotic journey. They find the secret of the pavilion inside the cube.
3.0 FINAL DESIGN Chaos and Clarity, Noise and Peace People would journey to the pavilion with a ramp that connects from the existing trail and directly into the under ground space.

Existing Trail Path to Pavilion Trees

BELOW GROUND
The inside of the cube gives a sense of peace with its minimalistic design. Light is only allowed through the space through the entry points. There is only space for one person to view the time capsule.
