Season Outlook The Charleston Southern Softball Team will begin the 2009 season with a new look, a new attitude, and under new leadership as Shane Winkler takes the reigns of the Buccaneers. “We have decided to change every aspect of this program from our uniforms, bat contract and shoe deal in addition to the way we prepare and think,” says Coach Winkler. “We want a new culture for Buccaneer Softball, and everything we do is going to be done like a top Division I program. This program has done a solid job of competing in the past with other teams on its schedule, but the days of Buccaneer Softball merely competing have come to an end. I look forward to Charleston Southern being one of the top programs in the Big South for years to come.” The Bucs will have competition all over the field this season for starting positions and will look for contributions from 14 different players. PITCHER In the circle, CSU features three returners and one freshman. Jamie Wellons looks to build upon a solid first year for the Bucs which included a No-Hitter against World Series participant, Virginia Tech. Sondra Vetter is the hardest thrower on staff and looks to take on a bigger role during her sophomore campaign. Caitlin Allen is coming off of off-season surgery and will add depth to the rotation. Kristin Kelleher is the lone lefty on staff and will compete for innings during her first year. CATCHER Brittany York and Elaine Edwards will compete for time behind home plate in 2009. York missed her entire freshman season and after red-shirting will look to add power to the middle of the Buccaneer lineup and a solid defensive presence on the field. Elaine Edwards continues to improve at catcher and will see time at a few positions on the field during her senior year. INFIELD Megan Hall is the leading returning hitter for the Bucs and will split time at first base with Elaine Edwards. Hall will also see time as the Designated Player in the offensive lineup. At second base the Bucs will rotate two of the top offensive performers on the team in Amy Trenkamp and Lisa Rice. One of the most demanding positions on the field in softball is short stop, and CSU will count on freshman Megan Lombard to hold down the position. Gail Matsushima rounds out the infield as the third baseman and should be an anchor in the middle of the lineup. OUTFIELD Every good softball/baseball team is strong up the middle on defense. The Bucs have a very solid defensive centerfielder in
senior Brittany Giannini. Brittany will also be counted on near the top of the lineup and will be the biggest threat on the bases for Bucs. Melissa Adams will see a majority of the time in left field. Melissa possesses a very strong arm and great range in the outfield. Right field will see many different faces this year. Ashley Fowler had a very solid fall offensively and will be a solid option in right after moving from the infield. Amy Trenkamp has the ability to play anywhere on the field and can move into right. When not in the circle, Kristin Kelleher will look to make an impact in either right or left field. The 2009 Buccaneers will have the opportunity to enjoy a home-field advantage in 31 of their 56 total games this season. “I’m very pleased that we will get to play well over half of our schedule on our home field this year,” says Coach Winkler. “Obviously the home-field advantage will help us, but here at CSU we really stress academic success and having the girls play at home allows us to keep them in class rather than having to travel a majority of the season. We will take a great deal of pride in protecting our home field as one of our major goals will be to have a winning season on our home field.” The Bucs will open the season at home against North Carolina Central. NC Central is a second year Division I program who went 3-46 last year as an Independent program (without a conference). Prior to Big South competition the Navy and Gold will prepare themselves by playing in five preseason tournaments. CSU travels to Campbell for a four game tourney followed by a trip to Georgia Southern for five games. The Bucs will then host two tournaments on their home field before completing their preseason tourneys with a trip to Winthrop for the Adidas Invitational. CSU will host East Tennessee State, Furman, and USC Upstate in nonconference double headers and will play rival College of Charleston in home and home double headers. The nonconference portion of the schedule is highlighted by a trip to ACC power North Carolina State. “Everything we do during the year is to prepare us for Big South play and eventually the Big South Tournament,” adds Winkler. “We truly feel that we have the type of talent to compete with anyone in the Big South, and our schedule should put us in a position to be successful when it matters most in May.” During Big South play CSU will host Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, and Radford while playing a home and home with Coastal Carolina and traveling to Liberty and Winthrop.

During his three seasons the Thundering Herd had a combined record of 91-78. During his time with the Marshall offense, the team broke its homerun record twice, including a combined 52 homeruns in 2008 with an overall team batting average of .288. The Racers finished the 2007 season in 2nd place in the NPF standings earning a trip to Kimberly, Wisconsin, for the league playoffs. Prior to Marshall, Winkler spent one season as the Co-Head Coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois. He inherited a team at DACC that had won 11 games in 2004 and led the program to its first winning season in 12 years by posting a 28-25 record in 2005. Winkler began coaching softball while in high school as a volunteer with the Kentland, Indiana, Summer Softball Association. He also spent one season as the hitting coach for South Newton High School in Kentland while attending Purdue in 2002. A 2004 graduate from Butler University, Winkler competed for the Bulldog baseball team after also playing at Purdue University and Illinois Central College. The Big South Conference is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2008-09, a milestone coming on the heels of unprecedented achievements and unparalleled success in League history over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell University, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. Dr. Singleton’s tireless efforts the first three years of the League’s existence were so instrumental that in 2008, the Big South Executive Committee approved the creation of the Dr. Edward M. Singleton Leadership Award in his honor. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, close to 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship three times, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the national team and individual scoring leader in men’s basketball twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships - the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last four years, while its football playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
