2008 Buccaneer Baseball Coaching Staff

Jason Murray – Head Coach Fourth Season at CSU Jason Murray became the eighth head coach in the program’s 40-year history on August 28, 2004, bringing with him a championship mentality centering on discipline. “Baseball is a game of discipline, and we want our players to be young men of high character and discipline, on and off the field,” says Murray. “We will have high expectations, and we will do all things in a first-class manner. We will be a program that everyone associated with the University, past and present, can be proud of. I look forward to the challenge of making this program one of the elite in the Big South conference.” Murray suffered some ups and downs in his first season as head coach, guiding the Buccaneers to a 24-29 record. The Bucs just missed out on being a part of the Big South Conference tournament, but Murray remains unwavered in his belief that CSU will become a contender in the Big South. With a 22-34 record in his third year at the helm of the Buccaneer baseball program, Murrary reached the 20-win mark for the second time in three seasons. CSU split the season series with The Citadel and took a game from the College of Charleston. The Buccaneers swept Radford and won two out of three against High Point, and also recorded victories against Liberty and UNC Asheville. Senior catcher Stephen Herzog was named all-conference second team, and Ryan Rowland earned a spot on the all-academic team under the direction of Murray. In his second season, the 18-38 record didn’t reflect the success that Murray and the Buccaneers saw, as two CSU players, juniors Justin Fyle and David Perkins were each named to the all-conference second-team. The Buccaneers also recorded victories over the College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and Liberty. Murray brought with him to CSU impressive credentials as both a player and coach on the collegiate level. As a player at Ball State University, Murray was a first team All Mid-American Conference selection at shortstop after hitting .425 in 1997. He helped lead that team to a 40-19 record. His college coach, Rich Maloney, was instrumental in Murray becoming a coach. He served one season as a student assistant at Ball State before taking a year off to try his hand as a teacher. It was not long, however, before he got the coaching bug again. Murray took his efforts South, starting at Winthrop University (a member of the Big South Conference) and helped lead the Eagles to

a 48-16 record and a berth in the NCAA Regionals in 2001. Murray’s next stop was the University of Florida. The 2002 Gators posted a 46-19 record and earned an NCAA Regional berth. Following that season, Murray joined Maloney’s staff again, this time at the University of Michigan. Murray was all set to begin his third season as recruiting coordinator with the Wolverines when the Charleston Southern job became available. Murray’s varied background in the Midwest and South was appealing to Small, who wanted a coach who could recruit all areas and one that had learned under some of the best. “Jason has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience by working for some outstanding coaches over the last few years,” said CSU Athletics Director Hank Small. “He knows the Big South Conference from having served on the Winthrop staff. He has coached in the Southeastern Conference and in the Big 10 conference. He’s a good fit for our University and for our baseball program, and we’re extremely happy to have him on board.” Murray, 33, is married to the former Mindy L. Curtis, and currently resides in Charleston.

What others are saying about Jason Murray “Charleston Southern got a great person and a great young baseball coach. He’s going to make a positive impact on the baseball program and the University. He’s a tireless worker, an excellent recruiter, and has a great understanding of the game. Jason has done everything possible to prepare himself for this opportunity and given the support, he will do an outstanding job.” Rich Maloney Head Baseball Coach-University of Michigan “He’s an outstanding coach and person and a first-class young man. I have no doubt that he will be a tremendous asset to the baseball program, the University, and the Charleston community. They (CSU) got themselves a good one in Jason.” Pat McMahon Special Assistant for Player Development and Scouting for the New York Yankees

Tim Lau – Assistant Coach Second Season at CSU Coach Lau enters his second season at Charleston Southern University and first as the recruiting coordinator. Coach Lau’s on-field responsibilities include instructing the catchers and outfielders as well as assisting in the offensive objectives. Prior to CSU, Lau served as an assistant coach at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wis. At Viterbo, Lau had a variety of duties that included working with infielders and outfielders but primarily worked with catchers. Under Lau’s tutelage several offensive and team records were broken. In the summer of 2005 Coach Lau found a home in the Northwoods League. He was an assistant coach for the Rochester Honkers. Lau teamed with former CSU pitcher D.J. Throneburg to help the Honkers win the South Division title in the second half and clinch the team’s first playoff berth since 2002. The Honkers also boasted the league’s best record that summer at 44-24. Lau started his coaching career at his alma mater. He served as an assistant coach at Holmen High School and was the head coach of Holmen’s American Legion Team. At HHS, he helped lead the team to three regional and two sectional titles and two consecutive state tournament appearances, including a second place finish in 2002. As the American Legion

coach, he guided his team to a top four finish in the 2003 State Tournament. In the two years at HHS eight of Lau’s former players went on to play college baseball. As a player, Lau played 2nd base and Catcher for Western Wisconsin College. Two broken wrists forced an early end to his playing career. Lau has a degree in turf management from Western Wisconsin College and is currently finishing his leaching licensure in secondary education. In June of 2006 Tim and his wife, Natalie, welcomed the birth of their daughter, Maya. Along with Maya, the Lau family includes sons Austin (11) and Tayvis (5). The Lau family resides in North Charleston.

David Wolfe – Assistant Coach First Season at CSU David Wolfe will serve as the pitching coach for the 20072008 season, having held the same position for San Fransisco State University. Prior to his stint at San Fransisco State, Wolfe also served as the pitching coach and substitute head coach for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League. Wolfe has coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels after taking his pitching career to the Arizona-Mexico Professional League. While at San Fransisco State, Wolfe helped improve the team’s ERA from 8.63 in 2006 down to 5.61 in 2007. He assisted in all facets of the program including pitching staff management, recruiting, team conditioning and game decisions. Prior to his time at San Fransisco State, Wolfe coached with Patten University of the NAIA in the fall of 2006. While with Patten, he lowered the fall pitching staff ERA to 1.67 and helped administer the strength and conditioning program for the entire team. From 2004-2006, Wolfe was the head baseball coach at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in Tucson, Ariz. While at the 2A High School, he improved the team record to the best in school history at 17-8 in 2006. The pitching staff finished first in the conference that season with a 2.23 ERA.

Wolfe has worked with multiple camps including stints with the University of San Fransisco and Santa Clara University. He also served as a training center coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks summer camp in 2004. Wolfe graduated from the University of Arizona in 2003 with a B.S. in business administration and marketing, finishing with a 3.3 GPA. Prior to his time at Arizona, he was a left-handed middle relief pitcher for Central Arizona College from 1999-2001. After winning the ACCAC Championship in 2000 and 2001, Central Arizona captured the National Championship in 2002. Wolfe was the team captain of Sabino High School, helping lead the team to the 4A Arizona State Championship in 1997 as a left-handed starting pitcher.

2008 Buccaneer Baseball Season Outlook Outfield

Overview In his efforts to rebuild the CSU baseball program over the last three seasons, head coach Jason Murray has had a consistent vision for Buccaneer baseball. “Since day one of taking over this program, our goal has been to have pitching and defense as the pillars of our program,” Murray said. The pitching staff will anchor the 2008 squad. Junior Andrew White led CSU with a 2.80 ERA last season, and senior Payton Tweddale, the all-time leader in saves, will anchor the staff. In the field, 17 new faces to the Buccaneer program will look to shore up the team defense. “This year, with our key returners and experience, I think we should be in a position to compete every day,” said Murray. “I also like the fact that we have talented freshmen who can push our upperclassmen to get better.”

Up

the

This will be a season of change in the CSU outfield. Gone is the trio of the Buccaneer lineup Justin Fyle, Wes Brundridge and Chris Krogmeier, who started all 165 combined games they played in. Murray called this the most open competition. “My goal is to have the most speed possible in the outfield, while still allowing us to do the most damage possible at the plate,” Murray said. Three to four players will compete for time in centerfield, Murray said, with freshmen Tom Burkett and Brantley Meier pushing junior Keith Hustedt. On the corners, Hustedt brings a strong arm, and Murray said freshman Tyler Thornburg is blessed with a great arm and the ability to hit at this level. Juniors Steven Lynch and Michael Obuchowski bring lefthanded bats to the lineup. Meier, along with fellow freshmen Steve Antolik and Scotty Radabaugh, could see action, too.

Middle

Defense will be the key to playing time in the middle infield, Murray said. “The great thing about some of our infielders is our versatility,” the coach said. “I want consistent defense. And when guys do that, they can solidify themselves in the lineup.” Junior college transfer Corey Trudell will be asked to take over at shortstop, while freshman Taylor Black will get the look at second base. Another junior transfer, Kory Morian, will push Black at second, and Radabaugh could also see action in the middle infield.

Pitching

Corners

With all the change on the rest of the roster, familiar faces will key the CSU pitching staff. The lone Buccaneer seniors, Tweddale and Cody Higgins will be counted on to lead the team. Tweddale became the CSU all-time saves leader last year, recording a school-record eight saves. Higgins returns as the top starter, going 6-2 in 10 starts to lead the Buccaneers. After leading the team in ERA as a reliever last season, Murray said White will get the chance to change roles this year and serve as a weekend starter for CSU. Juniors Brandon Roberts, who started 10 games last season, and TJ Green, a top reliever, will once again be integral parts of the staff, while junior Eric McGough will be asked to step up and be a more consistent asset for the Bucs. “These core players will be called upon to lead by example this season,” Murray said. From the group of incoming freshmen, Murray believes Thornburg, who will be a two-way player for the Bucs, has the talent to be a starter early in his career. Anthony Markham is a potential starter or long reliever; Stew Brase could serve as a starter, reliever or closer, and catcher Jesse Cadenhead is another two-way player with a “great curveball” who could serve as a relief pitcher.

Catching

After playing shortstop last season, junior Mark Perry will move over to third base for the Bucs this season. Sophomore Will Rodriguez will also push for time at the hot corner. There is a wide open competition at the other corner infield spot. Switch-hitting freshman Nick Chinners could see time at first, while Lynch and Obuchowski will also be in the running. Freshman Derek Smith can also play first, but will be looked at as a designated hitter.

The loss of all-conference catcher Stephen Herzog has made it an open competition at the catcher position this fall. Murray believes Junior Jake Cox and sophomore Mike Beattie provide the Buccaneers the opportunity to have two of the best defensive catchers in the conference. With Cadenhead and freshman Blake Hunt also in the mix, the spot is still up for grabs. But the battle for the position hasn’t caused them to abandon the team principle. “They could be competing daily,” Murray said. “These young men do a great job of helping each other out and competing in a team atmosphere.”

Charleston Southern Training Facilities

T

he Athletic Training Program at Charleston Southern University strives to provide comprehensive athletic training services to almost 300 Division I student-athletes, participating in 17 varsity sports. Athletic training services include the recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, education, and prevention of injuries that occur during intercollegiate athletic competition. The Charleston Southern University Athletic Training Center is located inside the CSU Field House. The facility is equipped with the tools necessary to provide extensive injury care and rehabilitative services for the Buccaneers. The CSU sports medicine department works in conjunction with South Carolina Sports Medicine. This group of highly talented and trusted physicians has been serving the Charleston area for the past 15 years. Dr. Joseph Calandra, Dr. Gary Windler, Dr. Seth Kupferman, Dr. James Dalton, Dr. William Wilson, Dr. Jon DeVries, and Dr. Eric Stem, along with Physician Assistants Michael Byers and Christopher Schafer, work directly with the Charleston Southern Athletic Training staff to provide the highest quality orthopedic care for our student-athletes. Charleston Southern also works directly with Dr. Brian Keller, family practitioner, and Dr. Michael Engel as team dentist. The athletic training staff at Charleston Southern consists of five Certified Athletic Trainers. Toby Harkins has served as Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director for Medical Services at CSU since 2005. Tuesday Patterson (Erskine) and Tadd Turnquist (UW-Eau Claire) return for their second years of service, while Brad Drake (Presbyterian) and Erin Weaver (Valdosta State) join the team this year to complete the athletic training staff and provide daily healthcare services to all CSU student-athletes. They also serve as approved clinical instructors for CSU’s nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program.

The Bucs would like to thank CSU alumni Matt Brownlee, Stan Kowalski, Hardy Ferguson, and Kevin Futrell for their efforts to kickstart the “Building Buccaneer Baseball” development project.
