AT A GLANCE
SEASON OUTLOOK The Lady Bucs won’t have any seniors on the 2008 roster but will return four starters who are no strangers to CSU volleyball. Head coach Danyel Bellush is confident that what the Lady Bucs lack in experience, they will make up for with athleticism. “This feels like a new team at times,” Bellush says, “Fortunately, we are able to rely on the experience of our juniors and the talent of our younger players.” Junior Sam Sasan will be directing the traffic for the third-straight season as the team’s setter. Sasan reached the single season 1000 assist plateau last year with a total of 1032 assists. “We’re going to be focused on ball control this season,” Bellush says. “Sam brings so much to the table and is really able to quarterback our team.” Sasan currently sits in fifth place on the all-time assist leaders in school history, after only two years on the court. Adding depth and versatility to the roster is junior outside hitter, Ashlee Kadatz. Kadatz seems to excel at whatever position she is put in and will see some significant time as the team’s libero this season. She recorded 301 digs last season, at an average of 3.07 per game to lead the team. Junior Nichole Diller, a 6-3 right side hitter, led the team with 72 blocks on the season
and managed to tally 224 kills in the process. She also was named to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team. CSU will depend heavily on the six sophomores that have grown up quick in their collegiate careers. Rounding out the offensive attack is sophomore outside hitter, Amanda Hill, who exploded onto the scene in her freshman campaign. Hill led the Lady Bucs in both kills and digs, while posting a team best 14 double-doubles for the year. She also managed to take home a number of postseason accolades. Hill was named to the All-Freshman team as well as Second Team All-Conference. Completing the sophomore class, there are five more players to add experience of their own; Cori Holeman, Emily Libertowski, Amy Nokes, Tricia Rodl, and Amberle Trinder, all of whom made appearances in 60 or more games in 2007. CSU has three new faces in freshmen, Katelyn Headrick, Crissy Skokan, and Brianna Razete. All three freshmen have the potential to impact the team in 2008. “This team is so easy to coach because of their willingness to learn and improve every day.” says Bellush. The youth for CSU certainly has a great upside. When you add into the mix some stand out juniors and an experienced coaching staff, 2008 could be a memorable year for the Lady Bucs.
MEET THE HEAD COACH: DANYEL BELLUSH Danyel Bellush enters her 12th season at the helm of the Lady Buccaneer volleyball program. Bellush brings years of playing and coaching experience to the team and is no stranger to CSU volleyball. She played four years for the Lady Bucs and was the team captain and lone senior in her last season. In each of the last three years, Bellush has led a strong cast of players, including 2007 All-Freshman Team and Second Team All-Conference performer Amanda Hill, 2006 first-team all-conference performer Jenni Shepherd, and 2005 second-team selection Katie O’Riordan. Under her direction, O’Riordan broke the all-time assist record, while the team set season records in kills and assists during the 2003 season. Her senior year she led the team in digs (242) and digs per game (2.521) while recording 137 kills and 17 aces. Her junior year was shortened with a severe knee injury 12 matches into the season that required surgery on her anterior cruciate ligament and cost her the rest of her junior year. As a sophomore she played in 104 of 106 possible
games and finished fourth in kills per game (1.337) and digs per game (2.510). She played in 28 of 33 matches as a freshman. Bellush was an all-state selection and team most valuable player at Osbourn Park High School. She coaches for the USVBA, serving as coach for the Charleston Junior Olympic girls team. The Manassas, Virginia, native graduated from Charleston Southern in the spring of 1997 with a degree in physical education and a minor in secondary education. She received her master’s degree in elementary education in 2001. Formerly known around the league as Danyel Lonigro, she was married to former CSU baseball standout B.J. Bellush in July of 2000. She is now the proud mother of two daughters, Tanner and Reece Bellush.
