Season Outlook will continue to build on that effort this year.” Middle Blockers The Bucs have an experienced group in the front line, led by senior Nichole Diller. Diller battled through injuries last year, but made an immediate impact when she returned with 1.72 kills per set. Look for Diller to be a constant on the floor as a potential starter this year. Junior Amberle Trinder catches a lot of teams by surprise, but coach Bellush can’t say enough good things about her. Just take a look at her team best .234 attack percent and .63 blocks per set from last year and you understand why she is on the court so much. Crissy Skokan comes into her sophomore campaign after being named to the 2008 Big South All-Freshman team. Skokan really came on late in the year, finishing with 55 kills and tying for second on the team with .61 blocks per game. This season could be more playing time and more numbers to follow for Skokan. “All of our players in the front line are really strong and great blockers,” said Bellush. “I am really confident in the play from Nichole and Amberle to start and with Crissy coming in on the rotation, it’s a great combination.” Right Side Hitters One of the most athletic performers in the lineup is junior Cori Holeman. Holeman is comfortable hitting anywhere in the front line and has taken great strides in the offseason. Last year she led the team in total blocks and was second on the team in total kills. After even more improvement, Holeman shows no signs of slowing down now. Amy Nokes, an extremely versatile player, will see time as a right side hitter, middle blocker and back up setter. With an athletic six foot frame, Nokes will bring a lift to the team when needed. Spreading her stats out last year, she was second on the team in assists, third in blocks and fourth in kills. “I’m pleased with the effort I have seen so far from both Cori and Amy,” said Bellush. “They are both some of the most versatile players in the Big South and will be an important part of our success.” Liberos Tricia Rodl will serve as the Libero for the 2008 Bucs. Last season, Rodl managed 2.50 digs per set and was a key factor in the defense. After a great preseason, coach Bellush is confident in Rodl’s ability and effectiveness at the position. Sophomore Katelyn Headrick will also see time at Libero this year with an added year of experience. Headrick has shown signs of becoming a great defensive player and will continue to improve over the course of the year. “Our defense has always been outstanding at CSU, and last year we had several players with over 250 digs,” said Bellush. “With Tricia and Katelyn at Libero, I expect more of the same and big numbers from them.” The 2008 Bucanners have a lot to shoot for this year, and coach Bellush believes that they have the players to do it. “Our goal is to get better every time we touch the ball,” said Bellush. “We are all focused on getting better every day in practice. If we can succeed in the little things, I think that our bigger goals will follow.”

Coming off one of the most exciting finishes to a season in school history; Charleston Southern Volleyball has high hopes for 2009. Last year’s relatively inexperienced group of players comes back with firm leadership and a roster dominated by upperclassmen. “I really thing the fact that we have matured a year will go a long way this season,” said Head Coach Danyel Bellush. “The girls have come in looking extremely fit and enthusiastic for this season. I feel like we have a great balance of veterans, experienced returners and talented newcomers.” The Bucs will use a tough nonconference slate to tune up for an always competitive Big South schedule. Among the highlights for this year is a pair of big name tournaments. CSU travels to N.C. State for their season opening tourney and will meet members of the ACC, SoCon, A-Sun and MEAC. The following weekend, the Bucs head to the west coast to take on Arizona State and company. In the ASU tourney, CSU will also compete against Idaho State and UTEP. Next, the Bucs travel to play local rivals, The Citadel and College of Charleston. At home, CSU will welcome Savannah State and Georgia Southern before beginning conference play. “I’m really excited about our tournament opponents, as well as the other great competition we have scheduled,” said Bellush. “The conference has been extremely competitive and evenly matched recently. I think that our nonconference schedule will be important in gaining an edge in the Big South.” Setters Directing the traffic for her fourth consecutive year will be the team’s captain, Sam Sasan. Sasan returns as the team’s setter, currently in fourth place for the career leaders in assists with 2973. She also led the team in sets played last year and will provide the most on court leadership and experience. One of two players added to the mix is freshman setter, Michaela Luna. Luna certainly has a bright future with talent, athleticism and the opportunity to learn behind a seasoned veteran. “It’s great to have Sam back with all that she brings to this team,” said Bellush. “Michaela may surprise some people, and the two setters have really been able to push each other in practice.” Outside Hitters In 2009, CSU returns some of the most talented outside hitters in school history. Leading the group is junior Amanda Hill, who not only led the Big South in kills and kills per set last year, but also shattered the CSU single season kill record with 499. Hill also led the team in service aces and had over 300 digs for the season. Another experienced upperclassman is junior, Emily Libertowski, who played in all 34 matches last year, starting in 19. Libertowski will provide some balance and another option for defenses to worry about. The second newcomer, freshman Ashley Johnston, will also get her feet wet as an outside hitter. A solid option in the rotation, Johnston could grow up quick with this group of hitters. “This is an exciting group that teams will really have to prepare for,” said Bellush. “The conference knows about the success we have had with our outside hitters, and we

Head Coach Charleston Southern, ’97 Danyel Bellush enters her 13th season at the helm of the Lady Buccaneer volleyball program. Bellush brings years of playing and coaching experience to the team and is no stranger to CSU volleyball. She played for four years for the Lady Bucs and was the team captain and lone senior in her last season. In each of the last four years, Bellush has led a strong cast of players, including 2008 first team all-conference performer Amanda Hill, 2006 first-team all-conference performer Jenni Shepherd, and 2005 second-team selection Katie O’Riordan. The CSU record books have been rewritten under the direction of Bellush. Hill broke the single season attacks and kills records during last season. The 2008 team alone had 23 additions to the individual single season and career leaders. Also, the single-season assist record was broken by O’Riordan in 2003, while the rest of the team set team season records in kills and assists During Bellush’s senior year as a player, she led the team in digs (242) and digs per game (2.521) while recording 137 kills and 17 aces. Carrie Yohe

Assistant Coach Charleston Southern, ’98 Carrie Yohe returns for her third year on the sidelines as the assistant coach with the Lady Buc volleyball program. Set to be along side her former teammate and coach, Danyel Bellush, Yohe is a familiar face for CSU, playing for the Lady Bucs from 1994-97. A team captain as a senior, she earned MVP honors in 1997 and was named Female Athlete of the Year for 1997-98. She was also recognized as the Physical Education Major of the Year, with an emphasis in teaching, in 1998. Yohe still holds records for CSU, although they are listed under her maiden name of Fenwick. She is second all time in block assists (311), fourth in games played (419) and fifth in attacks (2,190). Since 1996, Yohe has been a coach with the Charleston Juniors Volleyball club. While she has coached at a

Bellush was an all-state selection and team most valuable player at Osbourn Park High School. She coaches for the USVBA, serving as coach for the Charleston Junior Olympic girls team. The Manassas, Virginia, native graduated from Charleston Southern in the spring of 1997 with a degree in physical education and a minor in secondary education. She received her master’s degree in elementary education in 2001. Formerly known around the league as Danyel Lonigro, she was married to former CSU baseball standout B.J. Bellush in July of 2000. She is now the proud mother of two daughters, Tanner and Reece Bellush, who are four and two years old respectively.

Her duties include giving them an introduction to the sport and building their knowledge of the game, continuing into preparation for more advanced levels of competition. Yohe is the Physical Activity Director at Devon Forest Elementary School, where she has taught since 2001. Before that, she a physical education teacher and assisted with the volleyball program at Wando High School from 1998 to 2001. Known as Carrie Fenwick in her CSU playing days, she married former Buccaneer baseball player Tim Yohe, who graduated in 1994, on December 31, 1998. She is the proud mother of two, Elizabeth (9) and Rebecca (4).

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic AllAmericans in its quarter-century of existence.
