CSU LOOKS To Contend in Big South in Year Two of Lake Era Expectations are high as the Charleston Southern Buccaneers embark on year two of the Stuart Lake Era. Picked 7th in the Big South Conference preseason poll, the Bucs look to blend 14 returning lettermen with 17 newcomers and improve upon last season’s 16-win campaign. Highlights of the 2009 season included Big South series wins over UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, VMI and Radford. 2008 Freshman All-American Derek Smith and two-way standout Tyler Thornburg look to lead Charleston Southern back to the NCAA Tournament, while seniors Scotty Radabaugh and Andrew White look to close out their Buccaneer careers with a trip to Omaha and the College World Series. The only returning catcher from 2009, Blake Hunt looks to anchor the position for the Bucs in 2010. Hunt hit four home runs in part-time duty in ’09 and looks to be rounding into form after batting .382 for the Arizona Collegiate League Diamondbacks squad in the summer. A pair of freshmen, Drew Woodall and Will Bedenbaugh, will serve as Hunt’s primary backups and will battle for time at the position.

BUCCANEER BASEBALL 27. Freshman Kyle Ward, an All-State selection in 2009 for Georgetown (S.C.) HS, will man the position in back of Chinners. CSU’s lone senior position player, Radabaugh enters the spring as the team’s top 2nd baseman. Radabaugh overcame multiple injuries to start 46 games and bat an even .300 in 2009. Coaches expect junior Bentley Christmas, who batted .357 in spot duty last season, to also see time at the position. The hot corner is the domain of newcomer Matt Still. A local product out of Moncks Corner, S.C., Still sat out 2009 after transferring from Limestone College, where he tallied 29 career RBI in two seasons. In back of Still is freshman Jaren Sustar, while sophomore utility man Patrick Dolan, who started 38 times at the position in 2009, may also see time at 3rd this season. The graduation of four-year starter Mark Perry leaves an open spot at the shortstop position, and another fresh face, Brandon McKinney, enters the season as the leading candidate to fill the hole. McKinney batted .327 at Guilford Tech CC in 2009 while swiping 14 bases in 15 tries. Incoming

sophomore Walt Quattlebaum, the 2005 and 2007 SCISA Player of the Year as a prep player, will play the position as well. Heavy hitter Smith is back into form after an injuryplagued 2009 season, and coaches expect him to bat in the middle of the line-up as the team’s primary designated hitter. Smith belted 11 home runs en route to earning All-American honors in 2008 before slipping to just two homers last year. Outfielders # 7 9 11 21 24 31 49 50

The Buccaneers enter the 2010 season with perhaps the most versatile outfield in the Big South. Leading the pack is Thornburg, who finished the 2009 season fifth in the BSC in home runs, with 12. The junior set school records a year ago for runs, home runs, and RBI in a game, and he’s back to man right field for the Bucs this year. Speed demon Tom Burkett should lead the defensive charge for CSU from the center field position. Burkett enters 2010 with 27 career stolen bases, and he committed just two errors in 129 opportunities a year ago. At left field, Dolan’s arm makes him one of the most feared defensive players in the conference. At the plate, Dolan’s .505 slugging percentage was second on the team in 2009, as were his 22 extrabase hits. Both Thornburg and Dolan are two-way stars who will see plenty of action on the mound, opening the door for Brantley Meier to contribute greatly in the outfield. Meier was the toughest Buccaneer to strike out in 2009, fanning just nine times in 109 at-bats, and he could feature prominently in the offense as a lead-off hitter and all-around sparkplug. Freshmen Shane Miles and Jon Matthews will also contribute in the outfield as rookies. Both players were All-State honorees as prep seniors.

2010 MEDIA GUIDE
Versatile junior Jesse Cadenhead started 11 games in 2009, but he enters this season as one of the team’s most trusted relievers. The right-hander tossed a team-high 73.2 innings last year and is the only current Buc to have earned BSC Pitcher of the Week honors. Corey Deighan is back for his sophomore season and will factor greatly into CSU’s middle relief efforts. Deighan worked hard during the summer and should be one of the most improved Bucs in 2010. Another returner, Stew Brase, is also expected to provide quality relief innings. Brase posted an ERA of 4.74 during a successful summer stint with the CPL’s Columbia Blowfish. Thornburg may have had a strong summer in a closer’s role, but CSU coaches expect Dolan to anchor the back end of the Buccaneer staff in 2010. Dolan tallied one save as a freshman, in a March 7 victory over UNC Asheville. A pair of transfers could provide an immediate impact to the Buccaneer staff in 2010. Tyler Vick, a solid right-hander, participated in the NJCAA World Series while at Spartanburg Methodist College and won eight games during his junior college career. Also, George Schaefer comes to CSU from The Catholic University of America, and he held opponents to a .224 average during a summer stint with the Spartanburg Blue Eagles of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.

Charleston Southern returns eight significant pitching contributors in 2010, leading Coach Lake to call the position his strongest and most experienced spot on the diamond. Only 14 of CSU’s 53 games from a year ago were started by players no longer on the roster. After suffering an injury in the 2009 season opener and taking a subsequent redshirt year, southpaw White is back to lead the Buccaneer staff in 2010. White’s 51 career appearances and 3.82 career ERA are both tops on the Buc staff. A leader both on and off the field, White is healthy again and expects to return to his 2008 form, when he notched wins over Ohio, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Presbyterian College and Winthrop. Another lefty, Charlie McCready, is expected to serve in a starting role after starting 10 games as a freshman. McCready gained just one win as a rookie, against Radford on April 25, but pitched five innings or more on five occasions last season. Anthony Markham should also reprise his starter role in 2010. Markham dominated the Coastal Plain League over the summer, posting a 7-1 record with a 1.83 ERA for the Edenton squad, and he struck out two batters in a perfect inning of work at the CPL All-Star Game. When he’s not in the outfield, Thornburg will be on the mound for the Bucs, likely in a starting role. Thornburg did not start a game in 2009, but he did win four games and post a 3.73 ERA. During the summer, he tallied eight saves for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League.
