Season Outlook SCHEDULE The 2010 schedule will feature the toughest preseason schedule in program history. Included in preseason tournaments are programs from the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Big East. The Buccaneers will use these early tests to prepare for an always tough Big South slate which opens March 27 at Defending-Champion Radford. The Bucs open up the 2010 season by kicking off the “Palmetto State Showdown” hosted by the University of South Carolina. The Showdown features teams only from South Carolina and gives the Bucs an opportunity to compete for the State Championship and host the tournament in 2011. Opponents at USC will be USCUpstate, Furman, Coastal Carolina, and South Carolina. February 16 marks the home opener for the Bucs as they host Campbell in a double header. CSU then hosts the CSU Invitational February 19-20 as they host Youngstown State, #22 Louisville and St. John’s. The Bucs will face off against Louisville twice in their first of a few opportunities to knock off a Top 25 opponent. After a mid-week double header at rival College of Charleston on February 23, the Buccaneers travel to #7 Georgia where they will face the host Bulldogs, who finished third at last season’s Women’s College World Series. CSU will also face off with South Alabama, Iowa State and St. John’s at the Georgia Softball Classic. The month of March begins with CSU traveling to Spartanburg, to face USC-Upstate before hosting the Low Country Invitational on March 5-6. Presbyterian, Dayton and UNC-Wilmington travel to Charleston as the Buccaneers look to defend their invitational championship from 2009. Spring Break 2010 will see Georgia Southern travel to Buccaneer Field for a double header followed by a trip to Boca Raton, Fla. for a tournament at Florida Atlantic. While at FAU, the Buccaneers will face off against 5 teams that were ranked in the top 100 last season (Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville). The preseason portion of the 2010 schedule will be complete after mid-week trips to both South Carolina State (March 17) and Campbell (March 23). “Our challenging preseason slate was put together to prepare us to challenge for a Big South Championship in 2010,” said Head Coach Shane Winkler. “We have to learn how to win on the road in order to win the conference tourney in Conway, as well as competing in the NCAA Tournament.” The Buccaneers look to improve on their highest conference finish since 2001 (4th) as they travel to Radford, Presbyterian, Coastal Carolina, and Gardner-Webb in conference play. The Bucs will host a single game with Coastal as well as series with Liberty and Winthrop. Splitting up the conference portion of the schedule is a home double header with College of Charleston on April 21 and a 3-game series with Howard May 6-7 at CSU. “Our ultimate goal this year is to win the Big South Tournament May 13-15 at Coastal,” said Winkler. “I feel we have the most talented team Charleston Southern has ever fielded, and I’m confident our hard work will pay off when it really matters.” SEASON PREVIEW The Buccaneers look to build off of their best season in nearly a decade as they return a solid nucleus of upperclassmen as well as welcome a talented recruiting class. “We have improved in every aspect of the game,” says Coach Winkler. “We are definitely more athletic from top to bottom and have more depth at every position.” IN THE CIRCLE Sondra Vetter returns after a solid sophomore season where she went 12-12 in the circle to accept the role of staff “Ace.” Also returning is senior Caitlin Allen and sophomore Kristin Kelleher. The Buccaneers welcome junior Kimby Hobbs,
2
a transfer from Georgia Perimeter College, and freshman Morgan Dowdy to the pitching staff as well. “Our pitching staff is much deeper this season,” added Winkler. “After Sondra, we have the ability to throw four other pitchers out there as our #2 in order to find the best matchup for each opponent. I look forward to each of these pitchers pushing each other for innings and making each other better throughout the season.” BEHIND THE PLATE After receiving a redshirt in 2009, Erin Kegley, will return as the starting catcher for the Bucs. Kegley has emerged as one of the top offensive threats for the Blue and Gold for 2010. Backing up Kegley will be sophomore Melissa Adams and senior Megan Hall, who will both be starting elsewhere throughout the season. “I’m very proud of the leadership role that Erin Kegley has taken,” said Winkler. “After missing last season, she has worked harder than anyone on our roster, and it has shown both offensively and defensively. She will be one of the biggest reasons for the success we look forward to having this season.” INFIELD The infield welcomes back leadoff hitter and shortstop Megan Lombard who led the Bucs in homeruns during her freshman season. Megan Hall also returns and will see time at first base when not in the outfield. Freshman Jessica Peters-Brock will step in and play third base with the ability to play first as well. Solidifying an already solid infield are transfers Shayla Cullum (Campbell) and Trea Steele (Orange Coast College). Cullum will start at either corner infield position while Steele will be the starting second baseman. “With the addition of Shayla and Trea, our infield has really taken shape in preseason practice,” commented Winkler. “We are very solid up the middle with Megan Lombard and Trea and we have a few different possibilities we can go with at the corners as Jessica Brock and Shayla will compete for time and third while both can fill in at first as well. I’m also very proud of the way Megan Hall has led and has accepted more of a utility role and will play both outfield and first base while also giving us one of the most consistent bats in the Big South.” OUTFIELD The Charleston Southern outfield will be both young and athletic in 2010. Melissa Adams is the lone returner in the outfield after being selected 2nd Team All-Big South. Also seeing time in the outfield will be Megan Hall and freshmen Jana Matthews, Courtney Konyk, Mandee Camargo and Jasmine Conley as well as junior Cortnie Drew. “We are counting on Melissa stepping up and covering a lot of ground in our outfield as both Megan Hall and Jana Matthews are converted infielders who will see a lot of time in the outfield,” says Winkler. “Those three are very athletic, and we have a great deal of depth behind them. Courtney Konyk and Mandee are our two lefty slappers and will compete for time while Jasmine Conley has improved every day at the plate and is our fastest player. I’m also looking forward to Cortnie Drew hopefully getting healthy as she has undergone a few shoulder surgeries and has been out the entire year. WINKLER ON THE 2010 BUCCANEERS “I feel that we have the most talented team Charleston Southern has ever fielded this season. We had a respectable finish in 2009, and I believe we’re ready to compete for a Big South Championship in 2010. Offensively we are much stronger as we have a lineup that will produce 1 through 9. Our pitching staff has the talent to keep us in ball games, and we have seen leaders develop during the preseason that will help us win tight ball games. Our goal is to participate in postseason play in the NCAA Tournament. We will be challenged by teams early on that have reached that goal already. I look forward to seeing our players grow as a team as they head into Big South play.

Coaching Staff SHANE WINKLER Head Coach • Second Season • Butler (2004)
Winkler worked with a star-studded roster, complete with several Olympic performers, such as Jenny Finch (Arizona).
Shane Winkler enters his second season as the head softball coach at Charleston Southern. In his first season at CSU, he led the Bucs to a 26-33 overall record with a 7-11 mark in the Big South. CSU tied for the best start to the conference schedule in program history, jumping out to a 5-1 record. The Bucs also entered the conference postseason as the No. 4 seed, the highest finish since 2001. After a good showing in the Big South Tourney, including a win over No. 2 Winthrop, CSU finished with a 2-2 record in the postseason. A 2-2 record and one game out of the Championship game was the best finish the Bucs have seen since 1993. Under the direction of Winkler, Melissa Adams and Megan Hall were also named second-Team All-Conference selections at left field and first base, respectively. During the summer of 2009, Winkler was hired as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), which is the only professional softball league in the United States. The Bandits boasted a 27-12 record, the best in the NPF, before being eliminated in the playoffs.
4
Hired before the 2008-09 school year, Winkler came to Charleston Southern after three seasons as the assistant coach at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. While at Marshall, Winkler worked mainly with the offense and outfield while assisting with the overall team defense, recruiting, and all administrative duties within the program. During his three seasons the Thundering Herd had a combined record of 91-78. During his time with the Marshall offense, the team broke its homerun record twice, including a combined 52 homeruns in 2008 with an overall team batting average of .288. Winkler had the opportunity to coach four players that continued their softball careers in the NPF. During the summer of 2007, Winkler coached as an associate field manager with the Akron Racers of the NPF. While with the Racers he coached NCAA National Champions Alicia Hollowell (Arizona) and Caitlyn Benyi (UCLA) in addition to many other top softball players from the PAC 10, SEC, and ACC. The Racers finished the 2007 season in 2nd place in the NPF standings earning a trip to Kimberly, Wisconsin, for the league playoffs. Prior to Marshall, Winkler spent one season as the Co-Head Coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois. He inherited a team at DACC that had won 11 games in 2004 and led the program to its first winning season in 12 years by posting a 28-25 record in 2005. Winkler began coaching softball while in high school as a volunteer with the Kentland, Indiana, Summer Softball Association. He also spent one season as the hitting coach for
South Newton High School in Kentland while attending Purdue in 2002. A 2004 graduate from Butler University, Winkler competed for the Bulldog baseball team after also playing at Purdue University and Illinois Central College. Winkler played professional minor league baseball in both 2004 and 2006. After graduation from Butler Winkler signed a professional contract with the Florence Freedom of the Independent Frontier League in July 2004 and completed the season with the expansion franchise. In 2006 Winkler signed to play in Amarillo, Texas, with the Amarillo Dillas of the United League before being traded to the Washington Wild Things in Washington, Pennsylvania. Winkler earned his associate’s degree in general education from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., in 2002. He then received his bachelor of arts degree in communication studies from Butler University in 2004.

Coaching Staff MEGAN RHODES SMITH Assistant Coach • First Season • Tennessee (2009)
Megan Rhodes Smith comes to CSU after an accomplished career as a Tennessee Lady Volunteer pitcher. The four year starter amassed a 67-22 career record, including a 23-11 mark her senior year. Known in her
playing days as Megan Rhodes, she was also part of a UT team that made three trips to the Women’s College World Series. While at Tennessee, Smith completed her career second in Lady Vol history in strikeouts (726), third in victories (67) and fourth in both innings pitched (570.1) and winning percentage (67-22, .753) after a 2.20 ERA and 233 K’s in 213.1 frames as a senior. Smith was a standout student at Tennessee, getting recognized on the SEC Spring Honor Roll in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She also was awarded Second-Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American and First-Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV in 2008. Smith has also provided private pitching lessons for several young pitchers, as well as being involved in a number of pitching clinics in the greater Farragut, Tennessee area.
Smith will serve mainly as the Buccaneers pitching coach, but will also be involved with all player development and game time responsibilities. Smith graduated in 2008 from the University of Tennessee with a 3.8 GPA and a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is also working towards a master’s in sport studies with a concentration in sport psychology from the University of Tennessee. Smith currently holds a 3.75 GPA in her master’s and is set to complete the program in July of 2010.
Q & A With Coach Winkler Q: How do you envision this year going? A: I believe that we have a very solid mix of returners and newcomers this year. This will either be one of the most talented or the most talented team that Charleston Southern has fielded in the program’s history. I envision us competing for the #1 spot in the Big South and a bye in the conference tournament that comes along with it. Q: What do you have planned for the future of the program? A: We are quickly building a program with the ability to compete with not only the best in the Big South, but also the best in the Region. We are going to continue to put together a very demanding schedule, and I expect us to be successful against that schedule every
year. Our university and facility are growing, and our success will grow right along with them. The NCAA tournament is our goal every season, and I see us reaching that goal and eventually having to increase our goals to advancing in the NCAAs. Q:Who has influenced your coaching style the most? A: I have been influenced a great deal by every person that I have been coached by from little league through professional baseball. I have always known that I wanted to coach, so I intentionally took a little from each coach in order to try to put together a style that could be most successful. My father was my coach for the most years, so I have to credit him with influencing my style the most over the years. Recently I have learned so much
from every coach that I have coached with, under and against. The key is to never stop learning and never stop trying to grow as a coach. Q: What is your favorite thing about Charleston Southern University? A: It is such an honor to be part of a university and family where everyone has the same morals and values as you do. We are not only competing for a Big South Championsip and a trip to the NCAA tournament, but most importantly we are competing to glorify Christ and for the love that we have for Him. This is a special place, and I could not have been led to a better place to begin my head coaching career.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander became the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first longrange strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an atlarge participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

harleston Southern is a fully accredited, comprehensive university offering liberal arts and professional curricula, including graduate and undergraduate degrees. The University, founded in 1964, is included on the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges and was named one of America’s Best Christian Colleges. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the University’s mission is to promote academic excellence in a Christian environment. Charleston Southern has grown from 500 students to more than 3,000 students in its 45 years. Situated on 300 acres, the University is strategically located near Charleston, South Carolina, in the center of the modern growth patterns of the tri-county area. Students take advantage of the cultural, historical and recreational opportunities the city offers. Charleston is a city famous for its well-preserved colonial houses, famous gardens and plantations, miles of wide sandy beaches, and major fine arts events, including the Spoleto Festival USA (a kaleidoscope of opera, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts). The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Students can choose from 38 undergraduate majors and four graduate programs. In addition, our College of Distance and Continuing Education allows students to schedule classes around their busy lifestyles. Each degree program is combined with a comprehensive liberal arts foundation, which is designed to develop problem-solving and communication skills. CSU is widely known as a valuable community leader through its active participation in partnerships with local schools and businesses. CSU has the only master of science in criminal justice program available in the Lowcountry.
