2010 Lady Buccaneer Volleyball SEASON OUTLOOK The 2010 season begins with high expectations for the Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneer volleyball team. The Lady Bucs aim to continue momentum that has helped the team reclaim a winning tradition. A strong group of returning seniors headlines this year’s team, and the veterans will be joined by six newcomers added to a team that lost just two starters to graduation from a 17-17 club. The team, which finished .500 or better for the first time since 1993, went 6-10 in Big South play. Head Coach Danyel Bellush, entering her 14th season at the helm, said, “We’ve set the bar pretty high. This senior class has really stepped it up. We have quite a few newcomers, which I think will be great for them to be able to play with this class.”

Last season saw the Lady Bucs win a thrilling five-set match over Winthrop in the Big South Quarterfinals. The next day, CSU nearly upset two-time defending champion Liberty, falling 3-2 in the semifinal. “Winning in the first round last year has just shown them that they’re a team to contend with. If they can wear teams down, and frustrate some teams, with our defense and just our tenacity, that we won’t give up; I think we could do it again.” Schedule The Lady Bucs open the season with a tournament at North Carolina Central Aug. 27 and 28, facing the host Eagles as well as UTEP, Delaware State and Elon. Following the NCCU tournament, CSU opens the home portion of its schedule by playing host to The Citadel Aug.31 and UNC Wilmington Sept. 7. The team went 6-4 at home last season, and has gone 12-8 at CSU Field House over the last two seasons.

After competing in weekend tournaments at North Florida and Georgia Southern, the Lady Bucs open Big South play at Coastal Carolina Sept. 21. The conference home-opening weekend follows, as CSU hosts Radford Sept. 24 before playing High Point the next night. The Lady Bucs are defending city champions, having beaten both The Citadel and the College of Charleston in 2009. Both local rivals visit the Field House this season. “We play in some really good tournaments that will have great competition,” said Bellush. “The level of competition at these tournaments will really prepare us for the conference schedule.” The Big South conference remains a tough league, a challenge for which the team is preparing. Coach Bellush said, “We have some high expectations this season with our senior class coming back. This year should be extremely competitive in the Big South with the returners coming back for each school. We’re looking forward to a great season.” Setters A trio of setters will seize the opportunity to fill the shoes of departed four-year starting setter Sam Sasan. Sasan finished her career second in career assists and service aces. “Sam’s a big loss, and she was our quarterback for four years,” said Coach Bellush. “So, we have a few players that can step in.” Redshirt junior Amy Nokes returns following a 2009 season shortened by injury. A versatile six-footer, Nokes finished second on team in assists, third in blocks and fourth in kills as a sophomore in 2008, also seeing time at outside hitter. Sophomore Michaela Luna appeared in 76 sets in 2009 as Sasan’s primary backup at setter, and should see an expanded role. Joining the group is freshman Laura Grace Swindler, an all-state performer at Lexington HS. “We have Amy Nokes, who red-shirted last year, so she has to get her feet back under her, and then Michaela, who got to play under Sam Sasan for a year which was great for her,” Coach Bellush said. “And then we have a new one coming, Laura Grace Swindler, who is a really hard worker. We have those three options this season.” Outside Hitters The Lady Bucs will look to a group of six players at the outside hitter position, including three returnees and three newcomers. “We have an impressive

2010 Lady Buccaneer Volleyball SEASON OUTLOOK cast of outside hitters in Amanda, Emily and Ashley, and then we’re adding three more to the mix with the freshman class who are three really talented players,” Bellush said. Senior Amanda Hill, a three-time All-Big South selection, has rewritten the record book while at CSU while being among the leading hitters in the Big South. She placed second on the team in digs and service aces in 2009 and was named to the Big South All-Tournament Team for the first time.

“Amanda’s set the bar pretty high for herself. She’s on pace to do some great things number-wise, but she’s also got a target on her back.” Senior Emily Libertowski brings three years of experience to the table, starting 16 matches in 2009. She has recorded 100 or more kills and digs in each of the past two seasons. Sophomore Ashley Johnston earned five starting assignments in 2009 and led the team in service aces per set. Coach Bellush has added three freshmen to the team’s returning group of hitters. Kayla Klinger joins the Lady Bucs from Cary Grove HS, where she teamed with fellow CSU freshman Colleen Hargrove to win a state championship. Andrea Keesee will add athleticism on the outside, coming from Blythewood HS. Carley Reiter rounds out the newcomers, having earned all-Region honors at Wade Hampton High School. Middle Blockers CSU returns three accomplished middle blockers to the fold in 2010, as three of the team’s top four blockers will be back from a squad that placed second in the Big South in blocking last season.

“We’re really solid in the middle with the three that we have.” Coach Bellush said. “Cori and Amber return at that position, and Crissy has a lot of experience in the middle and on the right, so we’re excited about that.” Senior Cori Holeman brings an impressive resume to the table, as the leading returning blocker in the Big South. Holeman set a program record with 122 block assists in 2009, and was second on the team with 250 kills. Coach Bellush said, “Cori has taken ownership at the net, and she doesn’t want to let that ball come on our side of the net. She’s our number one defender, because the block is the first line of defense.” Fellow senior Amberle Trinder is a force in the middle, posting 93 total blocks as a junior, good for second on the team, in addition to 204 kills. Junior Crissy Skokan, a 2008 Big South AllFreshman Team honoree, aims to build on a sophomore campaign in which she averaged 0.67 blocks and 0.94 kills per contest. Freshman Colleen Hargrove, a state champion at Cary Grove HS has been brought in to bolster a strong core group in the middle. Coach Bellush said, “We’ve brought Colleen Hargrove in who’s from a state champion; we want to get her some playing time in the middle.” Liberos Senior Tricia Rodl has served as the team’s primary libero for the past three seasons and will continue her defensive excellence in 2010. As a junior, Rodl led the Lady Bucs and was in the top 10 in the Big South in service aces (9th; 40) and digs (8th; 441). Rodl is currently 10th in digs in program history. “Tricia, as a senior, will retain her spot as the libero,” Coach Bellush said. The senior will be joined at the libero position by freshman Maggie Murphy, who holds records for digs at her high school in Iowa, leading them to a state title in 2008. “We’ve added Maggie Murphy, who’s going to come in and be ready to play as a freshman.” CSU plans to improve on last year’s successful season, and with a strong group of returning players, bolstered by the addition of six newcomers, good things are in store for the Lady Buccaneers. Coach Bellush said, “We’re ready to get started, looking forward to it. With the old faces and the new faces, it’ll be a good mesh of both worlds.”

Danyel Bellush enters her 14th season at the helm of the Lady Buccaneer volleyball program. Bellush brings years of playing and coaching experience to the team and is no stranger to CSU volleyball. She played for four years for the Lady Bucs and was the team captain and lone senior in her last season. In addition, Bellush has posted the second most victories in program history with 136. In each of the last five years, Bellush has led a strong cast of players, including 2008-09 First Team All-Conference performer Amanda Hill, 2006 firstteam all-conference performer Jenni Shepherd and 2005 second-team selection Katie O’Riordan. The 2009 season saw CSU improve to 17-17 and cumlinated in a dramatic Big South tournament run, the Lady Bucs’ first semifinal appearance since 1990. CSU posted a thrilling 3-2 victory in the quarterfinal before taking two-time defending champion Liberty to the limit in a five-set semifinal defeat. Bellush, with the second longest tenure of any current Big South volleyball coach, was named Big South Coah of the Year in 2001 after directing the team to a fourth-place finish. The CSU record books have been rewritten under the direction of Bellush. Hill broke the single season

attacks and kills records during the 2008 season. The 2008 team alone had 23 additions to the individual single season and career leaders, followed by 40 additions from the 2009 cast. The single-season assist record was broken by O’Riordan in 2003, while the rest of the 2003 team set team season records in kills and assists. During Bellush’s senior year as a player, she led the team in digs (242) and digs per game (2.521) while recording 137 kills and 17 aces. Her junior year was shortened with a severe knee injury 12 matches into the season that required surgery on her anterior cruciate ligament and cost her the rest of her junior year. As a sophomore she played in 104 of 106 possible games and finished fourth in kills per game (1.337) and digs per game (2.510). She played in 28 of 33 matches as a freshman. Bellush was an all-state selection and team most valuable player at Osbourn Park High School. She coaches for the USVBA, serving as coach for the Charleston Junior Olympic girls team. The Manassas, Virginia, native graduated from Charleston Southern in the spring of 1997 with a degree in physical education and a minor in secondary education. She received her master’s degree in elementary education in 2001. Formerly known around the league as Danyel Lonigro, she was married to former CSU baseball standout B.J. Bellush in July of 2000. She is now the proud mother of two daughters, Tanner and Reece Bellush, who are 5 years and 3 years old respectively.

What brought you to Charleston Southern? I was recruited to play here and then I stayed and became the coach after my senior year. I got recruited to come play 18 years ago, and I never left. How important is it for student-athletes to receive a wellrounded education with a spiritual emphasis? It’s unique. That’s our claim to fame, our niche. I would have a hard time not being at a university where you could share your faith. It’s a huge part of our program and a huge part of the way we deal with good times and bad. So, it’s the only way for me now. What can we expect from a Danyel Bellush-coached team? I hope that you see a relentless team, a really hard-working, blue-collar kind of team that wears opponents down. We just won’t give up. We might not be the biggest or fastest, but we’re definitely going to outwork you. That’s what I would hope that every single one of my teams will be. What are some of your best memories from coaching? With coaching, it didn’t really have to do with our record, but I’ve watched some young ladies grow up into young women, and that’s been awesome. We’ve had a couple great wins over the 13 years, but watching the ladies grow up has been the most special part of it. What is your coaching philosophy? I think that coaching women, especially, is about relationships; the great Pat Summit said that one time, and I’ve really bought into that. Probably the last 10 years of my career, I’ve tried to get to know each lady and get involved in her life as much as I can. Investment is what it is. You can invest in their life, and they can invest in your program. I try to grow the whole person, not just the volleyball player.

What is the best thing about coaching at CSU? Obviously, getting to share your faith. I think there are coaches all over the country that get to be a part of great teams and watch young women grow up. But actually getting to share your faith and watching them grow in their faith is by far the best. That’s what I think gives you peace, and that if God’s brought you here, you know why you’re here. So I think that’s by far the most special thing about working here. How important is it to have strong senior leadership? Well, I think everyone prays for those seniors that take ownership of the team. And this senior class has just raised the bar so much and taken ownership of this team; this is truly their squad. I’m really proud to have them on the team. What are your thoughts on this year’s Big South volleyball season? I think it’ll be really competitive this year. It seems like everyone has a really good senior class, so everyone’s going to be wanting to finish high. We’re hoping to be in the mix with that competitiveness. How important is family to you in your life and in coaching? I think it changed me when I became a mom, for sure. I see these girls differently now. Everytime I’m dealing with a player it’s more, “How would someone deal with my daughter one day, when they’re in college?” So, it’s completely changed me, because it’s very important. Family in my life is the first thing I think of. What message would you say to fans? We play for you. We play for the fans, and we have great fans at CSU. We’re a small school, but it’s very tight. I just want to keep them coming back. We watch the other student-athletes at their games, because we’re a family at CSU.

KREG TOGAMI ASSISTANT COACH WHEATON COLLEGE (ILL.)

Kreg Togami begins his first year as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern. He will take over as recruiting coordinator, while holding on-court coaching duties and video exchange responsibilities. Togami will also assist in fundraising and promotional activities, among other responsibilities with player development. Prior to CSU, Togami was an assistant coach at The Citadel, from 2001-2005. He was the top assistant for The Citadel, helping the Bulldogs to 12 wins in 2004, the most wins the program has seen in a single season. Before coming to Charleston, Togami served as an assistant at NC State from 1994 to 1999 while also serving as the head coach of Club Raleigh. While coaching Club Raleigh, his teams won three regional Championships and qualified for the national tournament four consecutive seasons. “I’m very excited to work with Kreg,” said Head Coach Danyel Bellush. “I’ve known him for many years, and I know that he is really knowledgeable about the sport. Just to have another set of eyes to help me out will be great, especially when we are adding someone with the knowledge and excitement that Kreg will bring.” A 1989 graduate of Wheaton College (Ill.), Togami earned a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Wellness Management. Born April 4, 1966, Togami is married to the former Laura Kimbrell, and they are the proud parents of two children: Jonathan (8) and Hannah (5).

CARRIE YOHE ASSISTANT COACH

Carrie Yohe returns for her fourth year on the sidelines as the assistant coach with the Lady Buc volleyball program. Set to be alongside her former teammate and coach, Danyel Bellush, Yohe is a familiar face for CSU, having played for the Lady Bucs from 1994-97. A team captain as a senior, she earned MVP honors in 1997 and was named Female Athlete of the Year for 1997-98. She was also recognized as the Physical Education Major of the Year, with an emphasis in teaching, in 1998. Yohe still holds records for CSU, although they are listed under her maiden name of Fenwick. She is second all time in block assists (311), sixth in games played (419) and 10th in attacks (2,190). Since 1996, Yohe has been a coach with the Charleston Juniors Volleyball club. While she has coached at a variety of age levels, for the last seven years Yohe has been building the development program with children 12 years old and under. Her duties include giving them an introduction to the sport and building their knowledge of the game, continuing into preparation for more advanced levels of competition. Yohe is the Physical Activity Director at Devon Forest Elementary School, where she has taught since 2001. Before that, she was a physical education teacher and assisted with the volleyball program at Wando High School from 1998 to 2001. Known as Carrie Fenwick in her CSU playing days, she married former Buccaneer baseball player Tim Yohe, who graduated in 1994, on December 31, 1998. She is the proud mother of two, Elizabeth (9) and Rebecca (4).

2009: Played in 123 sets and started in 33 matches… received her second consecutive first-team All-Conference selection… led team with 3.84 kills per set and placed second with 3.32 digs per set... nearly broke her own record for kills in a season with 472 in 2009, after posting 499 in 2008... moved into second place on the career kills list and is on pace to break the 15-year-old record... also tallied 35 aces, 38 blocks and 37 assists in 2009… named Big South Choice Hotels Player of the Week on two separate occasions… registered double-figures in kills 28 times, including a stretch of 11 consecutive matches… had 17 doubledoubles, including in the final four matches of the season… had three straight matches in conference play with 20 or more kills, to go along with 18 digs… recorded 18 kills and 26 digs in 3-1 win over the College of Charleston on September 22.

2010 Lady Buccaneer Volleyball ADMINISTRATION Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr., President

Named president of Charleston Southern University in 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr. is also a professor of management and education. His teaching and professional interests include educational leadership, institutional assessment, higher education finance, organizational change, and student personnel services. Dr. Hunter is a frequent keynote speaker and seminar leader on topics related to higher education, and he continues to teach in the MBA program in CSU’s School of Business. This fall will mark Dr. Hunter’s 26th year as president of the university, and the 46th anniversary of CSU’s founding. During his tenure at CSU, enrollment has increased from 1,600 students to more than 3,000. Academic programs have expanded to include graduate degrees in education, business administration, criminal justice and nursing. The university now offers 38 undergraduate and four graduate programs. Church ministry-related degrees have also grown to include youth ministry and church music. A sports medicine/athletic training program has also been added under Hunter’s administration, providing students with academic and clinical preparation for certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Beginning in 2007-08, the Hunter Cup is given annually to the top athlete who also stands out academically and spiritually.

Dr. Rick Brewer, Vice President Student Affairs and Athletics

Dr. Rick Brewer is a seasoned Christian leader with the vision and leadership skills essential for serving effectively in the 21st century Christian Higher Education community. Throughout Dr. Brewer’s 22-year tenure at CSU, he has played a vital role in shaping the university’s vision for a Christian campus environment and spearheading and executing countless initiatives that underscore what Christian universities are about. He has consistently and enthusiastically taken on positions of increasing responsibility, and has brought to each his unique blend of commitment, administrative skills, and Christ-centered focus. Dr. Brewer is highly respected as an effective higher education administrator who has the ability to effect change while maintaining support and trust. Indeed, Dr. Brewer is a student-centered strategic thinker and transformational change-agent. Dr. Brewer holds BS and MBA degrees from CSU and a PhD in higher educational leadership from the University of South Carolina. In his role as Vice President for Planning and Student Affairs, Dr. Brewer provides leadership for CSU’s student life, Christian ministries, denominational relations and athletics. His family has a solid commitment to Christian higher education - Dr. Brewer’s wife, Cathy, and two sons Jason and Jonathan, are also alums of CSU. The Brewers are members of Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, S.C., where he serves as a deacon.

Hank Small, Director of Athletics Henry “Hank” Small is in his 10h full year as CSU’s athletic director and has helped lead CSU to 13 Big South Conference championships during his time. Small came to CSU in summer 2001 following a four-year stint as assistant football coach at Wake Forest University. Small has more than 30 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including stints at Rutgers, Florida State, Lehigh, Princeton, and Brown. Small also spent one year in the personnel office of the New England Patriots. As the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Small guided the Demon Deacons offense to record-setting heights as a number of school records fell during his tenure. In his most recent head coaching experience, Small was able to guide Lehigh to a 47-40-1 record and led them to become one of the most productive offenses in the nation. Small is a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College and has a master of science degree from Rutgers University. Small and his wife, Pamela, currently reside in Goose Creek. Daughter Lacy and middle son Jonathan both graduated from CSU.

2010 Lady Buccaneer Volleyball MEDIA RELATIONS Blake Freeland - Assistant A.D. for Media/Sports Info. Director The 2010-11 school year will mark Blake Freeland’s seventh year at Charleston Southern, and his second as assistant athletics director for media, having been promoted from sports information director in 2009. He also served two years (2004-06) as assistant sports information director. He is the main contact for the football, cross country and track & field programs, while overseeing the coverage of all 16 Division I teams. In five years, Freeland has had the chance to serve as the main contact for every sport. He has hosted the Big South Women’s Soccer Championship twice and has also helped out at the Southern Conference Basketball tournament. Under his direction, the Buccaneers have had two AP All-American selections in football, as well as a Draddy Trophy Semifinalist and two finalists for the ADA postgraduate scholarship. Freeland has also directed the publication efforts for two Atlanta Area Boy Scout Peach of an Athlete selections, a Lowe’s Senior CLASS finalist in baseball and a Johnny Bench Watch List selection. He has overseen a redesign of the athletics website and has started a number of new media projects for the department, including a Facebook fan page, Twitter and YouTube sites. He started and maintains the athletic department’s blog as well. Freeland is married to the former Katie Davis, and the couple lives in North Charleston. He is a member of CoSIDA, serving on the publications committee, and served as the chairman of the Big South Football SIDs in 2008-09 and 2009-2010. Joe Carmany - Sports Information Intern (Volleyball Contact) Joe Carmany begins his first year as a sports information intern at CSU. Carmany will aid in media relations for the Buccaneers’ volleyball, men’s basketball, softball and women’s tennis programs. Carmany graduated from Mercyhurst College in May 2010 with his M.S. in organizational leadership. While at Mercyhurst, he served as athletic communications graduate assistant, acting as primary contact for six varsity sports (men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, and softball). During his time in Erie, Pa., he wrote press releases, coordinated media requests, edited media guides and disseminated statistics. Prior to Mercyhurst, Carmany earned a B.A. in sports ministry at Malone University in Canton, Ohio. He served as equipment manager for the men’s basketball team for three seasons and aided the sports information office with game management. In addition, Carmany was a three-time NAIA national qualifier in track and field.

eyond the classroom, students can particiB pate in a variety of campus activities, including academic clubs, service organizations, intramural athletics and campus ministries. CSU’s athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Our athletic programs have produced several nationally recognized professional sports figures, including Charlie Simpkins, 1992 Olympic silver medalist; Maurice Price and Josh Breeden, who signed as free agents in the NFL; Bryant Burch, who signed with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders; Crystal Carpenter, who signed with the WNBA’s Utah Starzz; R.J. Swindle, who played for the Charleston Riverdogs as a member of the Yankees organization and became the first CSU player to ever pitch in a MLB game, joining the Phillies; Tyler Thornburg, who was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2010 MLB draft; and Bobby Parnell, who made it to the Majors with the N.Y. Mets. Charleston Southern University is proud to have sent 11 different teams to NCAA competition over the past eight years. The women’s golf team is the most recent to represent the University in NCAA postseason play, winning the conference championship in 2010, while men’s tennis is historically the most consistent, having competed in four NCAA tournaments since 1999. In 2008, CSU sent 12 track athletes to the NCAA Regional meet, and were also represented at the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) is a 1 + 3 curriculum program and has Full Approval of the S.C. Board of Nursing. It is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

The Bachelor of Management Arts degree provides a fast track and convenient degree in general business management for nontraditional students. A student transferring in previous college credit hours, accredited work training and military experience could complete the degree program in as little as 20 months. Bachelor of Technology Graduate degrees are offered in the following fields:
