Coach Eric Terrill enters his 15th season as the head coach of the soccer program at Charleston Southern University. He currently holds a record of 105-136-14 in his time at CSU with a conference record of 38-47-13. In his 14 seasons, Terrill’s teams have finished in the top half of the conference nine times. He has coached more than 50 all-conference players, three freshmen of the year, two players of the year, 95 scholarathletes, two Academic All-Americans, and four Big South Academic Athletes of the Year. Terrill has always been a strong recruiter with several All-Americans, region team players and state players of the year under his belt. In 2006, Terrill landed the No.1 recruiting class in the Big South, a class that was ranked 23rd in the East Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine. Terrill followed this in 2007 by landing the second-ranked recruiting class in the conference. This class included Michelle Dennis and Marky Boyce. Dennis won Big South Freshman of the Year honors, made the All-Freshman Team and was also named to the All-Conference Second Team. Boyce was named to the All-Freshman Team and the All-Conference First Team and this past season was named as the Big South Player of the Year for 2009. Terrill’s ’09 squad tied the program record for most wins in a season (12) and most consecutive wins (6). He went into the ‘08 season with a strong recruiting class that included Anja Djumisic, who held her high school’s record for most goals in a career. Casey Bolduc held her high school’s record for goals in a season; transfer Amy Arroyo recorded seven shutouts at her previous school, and Olivia Urig twice won SC High School Player of the Year honors. Terrill has been coaching for 23 years. He spent his first six years as an assistant before earning his first head coaching job at Chowan College. There he directed both the men’s and women’s teams in 1993 and ’94. He started the men’s and women’s programs from scratch at Chowan, and he led both programs to successful seasons before coming to CSU. Terrill served as assistant men’s and women’s coach at nationally ranked Lee’s McRae College from 1990-93 and as an assistant with the men’s program at Appalachian State from 1987-89. Besides his college coaching experience, Terrill has also been active in the soccer community as a club director and an instructor at several camps and clinics throughout the country. He currently serves as a South Carolina Olympic Development staff coach and has also been involved with Region III, Virginia ODP and Tennessee ODP. Terrill is a 1987 graduate of Michigan State University with a B.A. in physical education, and he earned his master of arts in education with a concentration in sports management from Appalachian State in 1989.

Rostin had a very prolific four-year career while playing for Terrill and the Lady Bucs from 1997-00. Over the course of her four seasons, Rostin appeared in 62 games (starting on 41 occasions), amassing 19 goals and recording 43 points in the process. The 19 goals currently rank Rostin eighth all-time on the CSU goalscoring list, while her 43 points are good enough for ninth place all-time in that offensive category. After concluding her eligibility, Rostin also served as an assistant coach at CSU during the 2001 season while completing her bachelor’s degree in social science. The 2001 season was one of the Lady Bucs’ most successful campaigns in program history, as Terrill’s team finished with a 4-1-1 conference record, earning second place in the Big South in the regular season. Before returning to CSU, Rostin coached with the South Carolina Olympic Development program and served as the head coach of various age levels at the Mt. Pleasant Soccer Club. She has also spent time as the soccer coordinator for the Mt. Pleasant Recreation Department. As the soccer coordinator, Rostin has been responsible for overseeing all aspects of one of the largest participatory soccer programs in the state, which sees 4,000 participants take the field annually. GOALKEEPER COACH
JACKIE STOLL
Jackie Stoll enters her second season as the Lady Buc goalkeeper coach after a dominant playing career at Coastal Carolina, where she holds several all-time season records for the Chanticleers. Stoll saw her playing time increase as she advanced into her tenure at Coastal Carolina, appearing in a total of 67 games. Stoll appeared in every game during her final two seasons (2005-06) and recorded 64 saves and 74 saves, respectively, allowing an average of only 1.43 and 1.58 goals per game during that period. Her save record in the 2004 and ’05 seasons (82, 74) placed her in fourth and fifth place respectively in all-time single season saves, along with seventh and ninth places for her 64 saves in 2006 and 34 saves in 2003. Stoll also left CCU second, third and fifth in all-time single season shutouts. Stoll’s appearances in her final two seasons tied her for first in Coastal’s alltime record for matches played (20) and placed her alone at the top for matches started (20). She left CCU with the record for minutes played with 1,820 in 2006. Her 1,711 minutes in 2005 ranked third; her 1,626 minutes in ’04 were fifth and her 527 minutes in ’03 ranked ninth. BUCCANEER 2010 OUTLOOK The 2010 Charleston Southern University Lady Buccaneers soccer team is riding the momentum from one of its best seasons in recent history. They follow up a campaign that saw them finish with a 12-6-2 overall record, including a 5-2-2 mark in Big South conference play, good enough for third in the regular season. These results mark the continued upswing of Coach Eric Terrill’s squad. This year the team looks to build upon that success. CSU was picked second in the preseason coaches’ poll. They were second only to Liberty, who garnered 94 total points in the poll and five first place votes. CSU was not far behind with a total of 87 points, including four first place votes. Coastal Carolina was next, picked third with a total of 72 points with High Point to follow in fourth, with 69 total points that included one first place vote. Nipping at the Panther’s heels are the Highlanders of Radford University, coming in at fifth with a total of 68 points, just one behind High Point University’s total. Gardner-Webb was sixth in the poll with 55 points, while Winthrop garnered 36 points. VMI totaled 31 points for the eighth position ahead of UNC Asheville with 27 points. Presbyterian finished in the 10th and final position in the poll with 15 points. FORWARDS The Bucs expect great things from the strikers again this year. Senior forward Marky Boyce was named the Big South’s attacking player of the year last season. She was given this honor as a result of a season that saw Boyce lead the Big South in almost every offensive category last season, including points (33), points per game (1.74), goals (13), goals per game (0.68) and tied for first in assists (7). Boyce had one of the greatest single seasons in Charleston Southern history “She had a great year last year, there’s no doubt about it, obviously after being named Big South Player of the Year,” Coach Terrill said. “She really stepped up to the plate when we needed her to.” Playing alongside Boyce is senior Michelle Dennis. Dennis played in all but one game last season; recording six starts for Charleston Southern. She follows up a campaign in which she recorded six goals and tallied three assists for 15 points last season. The Buc’s proven veteran attackers have been surrounded with several young talented strikers. Freshmen Toni Lashley, Allison Lewis, and Aislin McIlvenny give the Bucs an injection of youth in the attacking third. They look to enhance an already potent offensive onslaught this season. “I think some of the freshman (forwards) have come in, and their early development has really taken some of the pressure off Marky to be our only goal scorer like she was toward the end of last season,” said Coach Terrill. MIDFIELDERS Controlling the midfield has always been a vital factor in determining the Buc’s success with the 3-5-2 formation (three defenders, five midfielders, two forwards) that Coach Terrill employs. This
8
year is no exception. Redshirt-senior Caitlin Wesnesky anchors a midfield that lost several experienced players in the midfield. She was arguably the Bucs most versatile player this past season, controlling the flow of games on numerous occasions from both the midfield as well as during a stint on CSU’s backline. Returning midfielders of note include junior Olivia Urig, she returns after a season in which she appeared in 18 games including two starts. Sophomore Rebecca Hollstegge played in 15 games and made four starts in her rookie season. Hollstegge helped the Buccaneers finish with a 4-0 mark in games in which she started. Junior Anja Djumisic displayed her unmatched work rate and solidified her spot as CSU’s top defensive central midfielder. Sophomore Morgann Wood was one of six Bucs to play in all 20 games, starting in five. Sophomore Mary-Kate Dunphy proved a reliable substitute last season and appeared in six games despite battling injuries all year. Joining the veterans at midfield is a group of talented young newcomers to the Buccaneer’s program. They look to step into positions vacated by seniors in the midfield. Freshmen looking to bolster the midfield are Emma Krantz, Cara Johnson, and Chloe Urig. “It’s tough to replace those players that we lost at midfield, but with the talent we have coming in this year we can make some adjustments on how we are going to play in the midfield and continue to be successful,” said Coach Terrill. DEFENDERS This year the Lady Bucs have an experienced senior laden back line. The defense should certainly be a point of strength for the Bucs this season. Emily Danchak and fellow seniors Kelsey Riggs and Staci Ulichnie look to give the team strong senior leadership from back to front. The CSU defense is coming off a year in which they only allowed eight goals in Big South conference play and averaged just over one goal allowed per game overall. Another returning starter is junior Casey Bolduc. Bolduc was one of five Buccaneers to start in all 20 games, and solidified her spot as one of the leaders on the back line. Also looking to contribute this year to the defense is junior Andrea Williams. Also, Joining the fray this year on defense is freshman Tori Wright. She looks to contribute this season to an already established back line. GOALKEEPERS The Bucs have two keepers on the roster in 2010. Amy Arroyo saw limited action last year but had an extremely strong spring season and will look to compete for the starting spot in 2010. The Bucs have also brought in freshman Caitlin Cody and her imposing 6”1’ frame. She was named to the AAA all state team in Tenn., three years in a row and has all the tools necessary to be a successful keeper in the Big South.

Coach Terrill’s thoughts about Cody: “Cody was one of the best keepers at the CESA combine last winter. Her team won the state cup in Tennessee, and she had a great performance at regionals. She played against (fellow signees) Chloe (Urig) and Ali (Lewis) in regionals, where she had a phenomenal game. She’s got great height standing at 6-foot-1, and both of her parents are extremely athletic and were great basketball players in college. We’re really happy that we signed her, and we’re counting on big things from her.”

Personal: Daughter of Roger Krantz and Christel Pettersson. Born on May 17, 1990. Coach Terrill’s thoughts about Krantz: “Emma is very similar to a U.S. region team player. She’s a much different player than (former CSU player) Emma (Mattsson). (Mattsson) is a finesse player, and Emma has got more of an American style. She’s got the finesse of a Swedish player, she’s very skilled and sees the field well, but she possesses that athletic, physical edge that an American player has. Emma is going to step in and make a big impact in the midfield. We’re very excited about having another Swedish player in the program, especially a player at her level.”

We didn’t necessarily need a defender with this class, but Tori was just so good that we decided to push for her. We’re very happy and excited that we got her. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highestever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

participate in a variety of campus activities, including academic clubs, service organizations, intramural athletics and campus ministries. CSU’s athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Our athletic programs have produced several nationally recognized professional sports figures, including Charlie Simpkins, 1992 Olympic silver medalist; Maurice Price and Josh Breeden, who signed as free agents in the NFL; Bryant Burch, who signed with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders; Crystal Carpenter, who signed with the WNBA’s Utah Starzz; R.J. Swindle, who played for the Charleston Riverdogs as a member of the Yankees organization and became the first CSU player to ever pitch in a MLB game, joining the Phillies; Tyler Thornburg, who was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2010 MLB draft; and Bobby Parnell, who made it to the Majors with the N.Y. Mets. Charleston Southern University is proud to have sent 11 different teams to NCAA competition over the past eight years. The women’s golf team is the most recent to represent the University in NCAA postseason play, winning the conference championship in 2010, while men’s tennis is historically the most consistent, having competed in four NCAA tournaments since 1999. In 2008, CSU sent 12 track athletes to the NCAA Regional meet, and were also represented at the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The University fields teams in basketball, women’s soccer, softball, cross country, baseball, track & field, golf, tennis, and volleyball, as well as an NCAA Division-I football program. In it’s history, CSU has captured 28 Big South Conference championships. In 2009-10, CSU placed more than 40 athletes on the all-conference teams with another four athletes earning allfreshman honors.
