After back to back winning Big South seasons and a trip to the post season in 2010, Coach Julie Goodenough and her Buccaneer Women’s Basketball program look forward to an exciting 2011-2012 campaign. Having graduation take the best class to ever dawn a CSU jersey, Coach Goodenough and her staff have cultivated a new crop of CSU starlets and look to shock people as they have an underdog mentality. Not being looked at this year as a threat as in years past the Buccaneers look to use that to their advantage. Also with having such a big freshmen class, CSU looks to go into games with a fearless mentality as this team looks to make its mark not only on the Big South but in CSU folklore as well. “This year will be a real challenge for us adding six true freshmen and a redshirt junior to our squad. We lost three starters last year and with that being said there are a lot of minutes to be earned by all of our players now. Our team might have some mental lapses but that is to be expected with a young team, but also we will learn and grow from that as well. I love being the underdog and people looking at our team and underestimating our ability,” spoke Coach Goodenough. “We are very excited and look forward to our season.” Post players: Lakeitha Alston is one of the Buccaneers key players down on the blocks for the 2011-2012 campaign. With great instincts down low and the ability to create in the post Alston is expected to be a double digit scorer for the Buccaneers and pivotal in the Buccaneers success down low. Foul trouble plagued Alston in years past but the Buccaneer coaching staff look for Alston to show more maturity and keep herself in the game rather than on the bench due to foul accumulation. Another threat Alston poses is her ability to spot up and drain three-pointers which is a deadly combination. Another leader in the post for the Buccaneers is Anicia Dotson. Dotson, who the staff have praised for changing her dynamics as a player has developed, from a tentative freshman to a vocal leader for the Buccaneers. Guards: In years past the CSU Women’s Basketball Team has been predominantly guard oriented but with the departure of Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer, CSU look to even out their scoring but still keeping the tradition of being lethal behind the three-point stripe alive. Rachelle Coward looks to fill one of those voids this season as a top scorer. A pure three-point shooter, Coward makes shooting three-pointers look effortless. Coward’s size will give her the ability to have a mismatch out on the
4
wings. Coward, who has a quick first step, can slide by her defender with no hesitation and can also hit shots from all over the flow with her range. Kiki Rutledge had a good freshman year but had to sit out a year due to injury. CSU anticipates her to contribute right off the bat. Rutledge has an eye for assists. With good vision on the court, Rutledge will be looked to help execute the game plan with surgeon like precision. Helen Terry adds range and a lot of dynamic play to CSU’s front court. A player who can get the rack and create her shot even though she might be in a lane of tall trees. Being 5-5 in stature Terry’s inspiration has been UNC’s point guard Ivory Latta. Though small, Terry is quick and at times can take over a game as she has been known to get in the “zone” and help lead her team to victory. Lastly Shay Jones rounds out the guards. Jones, who will be looked at as an extension of the CSU coaching staff on the court. A pure playmaker, Jones can create things for CSU off the dribble or can find the open man. Look for Jones at times to show flashes of brilliance and command CSU in every aspect of the game. Coach Goodenough on the season: “It is pertinent that we have success in our non-conference schedule. Early success in our non-conference games it will get us prepared mentally and physically for our grueling Big South schedule. Granted we might stumble along the way because we are young but if we can learn and grow from our mistakes and try not to repeat those we can look at everything positive and continue to move forward. In 2010, we made the postseason for the first time in school history. The coaching staff along with myself want to make that a regular occurrence instead of a lofty hope and dream. We have drilled that into our girls that we should and plan on making the postseason year in and year out. We understand we are young and are the underdogs but that’s how I like it. We will battle every day in practice so when we get into the game “battling” will be something we are used to and feel comfortable in doing. It makes us hungry and gives us a lot of fight. This should be very interesting for everyone to watch.”
HEAD COACH Head Coach Julie Goodenough sixth Season at CSU All-Time Record: 273-205 CSU Record: 62-90 For CSU: Coach Julie Goodenough begins her sixth season at the helm of the CSU women’s basketball program with an overall record of 6390 (28-48 Big South Conference). Tolbert was second in the conference in scoring last season, and she finished her storied career with 11 separate program records and two Big South Conference records. 2009-10 season saw Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer get 2nd Team All Conference honors with Heleny Terry garnishing a spot on the All Freshman Team. In 2010-2011, the Buccaneers added to that impressive resume as Katie Tull took home Big South’s Player of the Year award along with being named 1st team All-Conference adding to her 2nd team All-Conference accolades earlier in her career. Kelsey Wasmer for the 2nd time in her career, took home 2nd team All-Conference and AllAcademic accolades. Coach Goodenough encourages her players to display good sportsmanship and a hard work ethic. sons under Goodenough. Coaching Career Prior to CSU: Goodenough posted a three-year stint at Oklahoma State University as the head women’s basketball coach. Goodenough also coached at University of Texas at Arlington and Lubbock Christian University prior to becoming head coach at HardinSimmons University in 1993. The FCA Big Country All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award garnishes Goodenough’s name. This game is played annually in Abilene, Texas. For her service, basketball excellence and humanitarianism Goodenough was blessed with this honor. While at Hardin-Simmons, Goodenough coached three All-Americans, 34 All-Conference selections and 46 Academic All-Conference selections. She left the program as the winningest coach in school history, reaching 150 career wins in less than 200 career games. HardinSimmons captured seven conference championships and made six consecutive postseason appearances under Goodenough, who posted a 188-54 record in her nine seasons. At Oklahoma State, Goodenough recruited and coached the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year (Nina Stone, currently a college coach, after a brief stint playing professionally in Puerto Rico), and posted the 19th best recruiting class in the country in her first full season. Five of the top 10 largest home crowds in school history occurred during Goodenough’s tenure, including the largest crowd to ever watch a home women’s basketball contest. CONFERENCE AFFILIATION
Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in fall 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. He has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the league as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified conference membership with the additions of High Point, GardnerWebb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual NCAA National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth year of the Big South’s football existence. The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”, was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the conference’s 25th anniversary. The league also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-08, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-07 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic AllAmericans in its quarter-century of existence.
