2011 CHARLESTON SOUTHERN BASEBALL

2011 OUTLOOK The time is now for the 2011 CSU baseball team, who will look to send off the team’s 11 seniors with a successful campaign. The motto of “accountable urgency” fueled the team throughout the offseason and preseason, spurring hard work both on the field and in the classroom. Head Coach Stuart Lake enters his third season at the helm of the Bucs and has guided the team to improvements in numerous areas in both of his previous seasons. He is joined by Charles Assey (third season), Sid Fallaw (second season) and Jamie Rabon (first season). A slew of experienced veterans, combined with a crop of talented newcomers, will no doubt help the Buccaneers exceed expectations and finish ahead of their preseason eighth place Big South ranking in the 2011 season. Led by captains Tom Burkett and All-Conference Second Team member Nick Chinners, the Buccaneers boast the most depth and competition the team has seen in three seasons at many key positions.

CATCHER The Buccaneers have worked hard to improve at catcher and expect to reap the benefits of their hard work this season. Assistant Coach Sid Fallaw has strong options at the position this season, including redshirt junior Blake Hunt who returns to action this season after suffering an injury in 2010. “This year’s catching staff looks to be very promising,” says Coach Fallaw. “We have worked very hard over the course of the year to improve as a staff behind the plate and look forward to handling a talented pitching staff. This year we boast both youth and experience behind the plate, so I am very excited to watch these guys in action. If hard word breeds results, it should be a very exciting year behind the plate for our team.” Drew Woodall enters the season with a year of experience under his belt. Woodall started 21 games at catcher as a freshman and saw action in 33 games overall. He had 15 hits with eight runs and 12 RBI in 2010 and his 148 putouts ranked second on the team. Woodall and Hunt will be joined by freshman Denis Buckley behind the plate. In December of 2010 CSU suffered their most devastating loss when redshirt freshman Will Bedenbaugh was killed in a car accident. This close-knit unit will no doubt miss their comrade but will use their play to honor him in 2011.

2011 OUTLOOK

PITCHERS The loss of Tyler Thornburg to the professional ranks may be viewed as a hole in the lineup to some, but Coach Lake has many different ways to fill the void. A wealth of talent and experience on the mound will more than make up for the void left by Thornburg, who was selected in the third round by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2010 MLB draft. “I am very excited about this year’s pitching staff,” says pitching coach Charles Assey. “I strongly believe that with the maturity and experience of returning pitchers, combined with a few new additions, our pitching staff has a good chance of pushing our program into the top of the Big South. I preach to our staff to be both mentally and physically tough to endure a long, vigorous season Senior Jesse Cadenhead returns after a strong junior campaign and is expected to anchor the Bucs’ pitching staff. He will be joined by fellow senior Stew Brase, whose 21 appearances last season were second only to Thornburg. Cadenhead made 18 appearances with seven starts and struck out 55 batters while earning an ERA of 7.28. Brase had three saves and two wins for the Bucs as a junior, finishing with an ERA of 6.75. Anthony Markham also enters his final season of eligibility for the Bucs and should see plenty of time on the mound in 2011. His 11 starts were second only to Thornburg in 2010, and he finished third on the team in innings pitched with 63.2. Markham gave up 54 runs off of 92 hits for an ERA of 6.08. Juniors Patrick Dolan and Charlie McCready are both expected to see significant time on the mound after successful sophomore seasons. Dolan spent 2010 as a jack-of-all-trades for the Bucs and saw time at first base, outfield, designated hitter and pitcher. On the mound, he finished the year with an ERA of 9.85 over 28.1 innings. McCready had eight starts in 2010 and emerged from his sophomore season with an ERA of 8.38 over the course of 48.1 innings.

Tyler Vick is expected to lead both the long relief and set up pitchers after pitching 37 innings in 21 games as a junior in 2010. Vick finished the season with an ERA of 5.46 after giving up 23 runs off of 37 hits and striking out 21 batters. A quartet of newcomers is behind Vick at the relief spot, but they are sure to bring talent beyond their years to the mound. Redshirt junior Ali Williams is the lone member of the quad with collegiate experience but will see his first action in a Buccaneers uniform in 2011 after transferring from USC Salkehatchie. Freshmen Levi Mauldin, Zach Hagaman and Matt Witt are all expected to see a significant number of appearances this season. McCready could also see time as a long reliever. Behind Vick at setup is Kyle Ward, who enters his sophomore season with the Bucs. Ward was strong in the limited innings he pitched in 2010, ending the season with an ERA of 3.60 and giving up three runs off of seven hits Witt and Hagaman, as well as redshirt junior George Shaefer, are also expected to be used as setup type pitchers. Williams and junior Corey Deighan will handle the closer responsibilities. Williams sat out last season after transferring from USC Salkehatchie but is expected to be strong for the Bucs this season. Williams finished with an ERA of 3.72 and struck out 71 batters for the Indians in 2009. Deighan had 26 appearances for the Bucs as a sophomore, giving up 45 hits and 36 runs for an ERA of 7.16. “Pitching will be very strong for us,” says Coach Lake. “We have a lot of veterans who have really worked hard.”

2011 OUTLOOK

2011 OUTLOOK

“I would be remiss not to mention our most painful loss, and that was of Will. Will died over the Christmas holiday in car accident and would have been in position to see time this spring behind the plate. Our catchers know we use more than one and are a very close group. Will serves as the motivating force to our team, especially our catchers, every day.” - Coach Stewart Lake

INFIELD The infield is just one more place where the Bucs boast a veteran presence, with upperclassmen returning to reclaim their spots at every position. “Our infielders are working hard every day to improve on fundamentals,” says assistant coach Jamie Rabon, who enters his first season with the team. “Every infielder has bought into our system and continues to see improvement at every practice. I’m looking forward to the upcoming season.” Named last season to the Big South’s All-Conference Second Team, co-captain Nick Chinners will return at first base for his final season with the Buccaneers in 2011. Chinners led the team and finished second in BSC with a .385 batting average and ended the season with 79 hits, 26 runs and 43 RBI. Chinners started 35 games at first in 2010 and appeared in 52 games overall, recording a team-leading 407 putouts. Walt Quattlebaum is also expected to see some time at first base. Senior Bentley Christmas is expected to get the bulk of playing time at second base, but newcomer Cody Austin will be close behind and could also see significant time. Christmas started 36 games for the Bucs in 2010 and finished the season with 22 runs and 10 RBI, as well as 76 putouts. Quattlebaum and senior Brandon McKinney will battle for the starting spot at shortstop, as both a veterans that bring great experience to the table. Quattlebaum started 41 games last season, with most of his starts coming at shortstop. As a sophomore he hit .294 with 24 runs, 26 RBI and six home runs. McKinney also saw significant time in 2010, starting 24 games as a junior. He finished the season hitting .218 and had 46 putouts. Freshman Alex Tomasovich will compete with both for playing time as well. Third base will be another tough battle that continues over from last season between sophomores Jaren Sustar and redshirt senior Matt Still. The two split time at the position last season, and both are solid third basemen who bring power to the plate. Sustar appeared in 24 games with 14 starts as a freshman and hit .221 with 12 runs. Still saw little more action, with 44 starts and had one of the team’s best slugging percentages at .454. He was also third on the team in runs scored with 17 – seven of which were home runs. He finished the season with 51 hits and 28 runs in 185 at bats for a batting average of .276.

OUTFIELD “In the outfield, we return to every day starters in Burkett and Meier,” says Coach Lake. “They will both see time in center and corners but bring a wealth of talent and experience to us. We also have some interesting newcomers that I feel will make an immediate impact in our outfield.” Co-captain Tom Burkett and Brantley Meier, who was elected by teammates to wear the commemorative #23 jersey, are expected to anchor the outfield both in the field and at the plate, as both are at the top of the order. In the outfield will be Burkett, who started 46 games in 2010, led the team in home runs with 24 and was fourth with 97 put outs. He was also second in stolen bases with 15. Freshman Brian Welch is also expected to make some appearances at left field. Meier will see time in center field, but like Burkett, could see time at both left and right as well. Meier was one of the Bucs strongest hitters in 2010, leading the team in runs scored (41), on base percentage (.455), hits (84) and stolen bases (25), among others. His leadership and dedication both on and off the field led to his teammates awarding him the #23 jersey, which is worn by the senior who best represents the program and CSU values. Junior Brennan Dorsett will compete for the spot in the outfield after transferring from Louisburg Junior College in 2010. Burkett will be able to add experience to this position after seeing time in right field as a junior. After playing in just 14 games due to injury as a freshman, Shane Miles will also fight for time in the outfield. Interestingly enough, CSU’s outfield lineup will be based upon the pitching staff, as Dorsett and Hagaman will split time in the field and on the mound. HITTING The Buccaneers return two of the Big South’s strongest hitters in Chinners and Meier, who finished second and fourth, respectively, in the conference in batting average. Chinners hit .385 to lead the team, and Meier was close behind at .378. Coach Lake feels the Bucs will find strength in the designated hitter spot with senior Derek Smith. Smith hit .324 with 19 runs and eight homers in 102 at bats in 2010. He boasted the team’s best slugging percentage at .588 and an on base percentage of .407. “We have a very solid offensive team returning and some exciting newcomers who give us added options and depth,” says Coach Lake. “As a coach, when you have depth then you have the ability to pinch hit and pinch run. Now that BBCOR bats are standard in the NCAA, I feel this depth with be vital to our offensive success.

COACH PROFILES STUART LAKE Head Coach (3rd Season) Charleston Southern ‘94 South Carolina ‘98

COACH PROFILES

This season will mark head coach Stuart Lake’s third year at the helm of his alma mater, the CSU Buccaneers, and could very well be one of his best as the team has seen much improvement in his prior two seasons. In 2010 Lake piloted the Bucs to a 17-38 record with impressive wins over #25 The Citadel and Virginia Commonwealth, as well as Big South foes #28 VMI and Presbyterian. CSU also had strong showings against some of the nation’s top teams, including #8 Coastal Carolina, #6 Florida and the eventual national champions #7 South Carolina. Pitcher Tyler Thornburg capped off a stellar season by being named to the All-Conference Second Team. He was then selected in third round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Teammate Nick Chinners, who returns for his senior season in 2011, was also named to the All-Conference Second Team after finishing 2010 ranked second in the Big South in batting average (.485). In Lake’s first season as the CSU skipper, the Buccaneers went 16-37 and posted a 10-16 mark in Big South Conference play. Highlights of the season included season-series victories over BSC foes UNC Asheville, VMI and Radford. Pitchers Jesse Cadenhead and Brandon Roberts earned BSC Pitcher of the Week honors, while senior Mark Perry was a member of the BSC All-Academic team. In Lake’s 14-year coaching career, he has coached more than 75 players who have gone on to play professional baseball with 31 of those being drafted in the first 10 rounds. Seven of those 13 were drafted in the first round. Three of his players have been named SEC Player of the Year and one named Southern Conference Player of the Year. Two of his players have been named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List with one winning that coveted award. Lake has had 10 former athletes reach the Major League and Lake is one of the few who can ever claim to coach a player that eventually appeared in the Major League All-Star Game, World Series and the Super Bowl. In 2008, Lake became the third CSU/Baptist College graduate to coach the Buccaneers, following in the footsteps of Ralph Ciabattari and Jamie Futrell. Prior to his arrival at CSU, Lake spent two years across town as an assistant for The Citadel Baseball program, where he was responsible for coaching the hitters and outfielders, and was very involved in recruiting prospective student-athletes.

In Lake’s first year at Ole Miss, the Rebels offense belted 14 more home runs than in the previous year and the team’s .444 slugging percentage was 33 points higher than the year before. In addition, the Rebels topped the 600-hit mark with 614 base hits. In the 2005 season, the Rebels continued to improve offensively, producing more than 750 hits, scoring more than 500 runs and driving in 462 runs on the way to claiming the SEC Western Division title, the program’s first in 23 seasons. The Rebels also had six hitters hit over the .300 mark that year. The 2006 season witnessed Ole Miss lead the extremely tough SEC in hitting as the Rebels batted at the .309 clip for the year and four Rebels finished in the top eight in the SEC in total hits for the season. The Ole Miss offense produced more than 700 hits for the second straight season as the Rebels won the SEC Tournament on its way to a second straight NCAA Super Regional. Prior to his stint at Ole Miss, Lake spent one season at the College of Charleston. In his only year with the Cougars, Lake served as third base coach, hitting instructor and outfield coach. Lake began his collegiate coaching career at South Carolina in 1999, where he coached the outfielders, coached first base and assisted with the hitters. During his time at USC, the Gamecocks won three SEC East Division titles, two SEC Championships, played in three NCAA Super Regionals and reached the College World Series Championship Game in 2002. Lake helped two SEC Player of the Year winners during his stint as a Gamecock. One of those players, Kip Bouknight, was also the 2002 Golden Spikes Award Winner. Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Lake coached at Mid Carolina High School (his alma mater) and at Brookland Cayce High School in Columbia. Brookland Cayce won the AAA State Championship in Lake’s second year in 1998. Lake also served as the head coach of the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League in 2000. Lake is married to the former Tracie Smith of Clover, S.C. The couple has one son, Hayden.

Lake also spent three seasons as an assistant for the Ole Miss Rebels, where he was responsible for the hitters and outfielders. Ole Miss enjoyed three of the school’s most successful seasons in history with 39 wins in 2004, 47 in 2005 and 44 in 2006. The Rebels hosted an NCAA Regional in all three of Lake’s years, as well as two NCAA Super Regionals. The 2005 edition of the Ole Miss ball club won the Southeastern Conference Western Division and the 2006 team won the SEC Tournament Championship.

COACH PROFILES

Charles Assey enters his 3rd season under head Coach Stuart Lake at Charleston Southern. Assey heads up the recruiting efforts, while on the field he is in charge of the pitchers and infielders for the Buccaneers. Pitcher Tyler Thornburg flourished under Assey’s tutelege in 2010, earning All-Big South Second Team Honors for his efforts. Thornburg ranked first in opponent batting average as a junior (.212) and finished the season with an ERA of 4.14. He was chosen in the third round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Assey also guided the rest of the pitching staff to improvements, dropping the team ERA from 7.00 to 6.86. Anthony Markham and Stew Brase in particular saw major improvements, as Markham’s ERA improved from 7.95 to 6.08, while Brase cut his in half. In Assey’s first season with the Buccaneers, he improved CSU’s fielding percentage from .955 in 2008 to .961 in 2009. Specifically within the infield, Assey helped fielding percentage improve from .937 in 2008 to .965 in 2009. Pitching coach duties will be added to Assey’s duties in 2010. Off the field, Assey continues to hit the recruiting trail to bring the top players throughout the Southeast and the country to CSU. A 2004 graduate of PC, Assey returned to the Blue Hose in the summer of 2007 and was in charge of the team’s field output in the 2008 season. Under Assey’s guidance, PC catchers gunned down more than 30% of stolen base attempts and held a .985 fielding percentage. Offensively, Assey was brought in to help power numbers, which he did, upping the homer un total by 13 during the 2007 campaign. Prior to PC, Assey had a successful stint at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. He served as a graduate assistant baseball coach and as the head strength and conditioning coach during his time at St. Edward’s. During his two years at St. Edward’s, Assey served as the first base coach and as the assistant recruiting coordinator. He also served as the camp director for former St. Edward’s head baseball coach Jeremy Farber’s baseball camps. Assey coached 3 position players at St. Edwards who went on to play either Minor League Baseball or in Independent Professional Baseball. Prior to Assey’s arrival at St. Edwards the program had gone .500 the year before. During his two years the program improved exponentially, winning 35 games in his first year and 36 in his final year. A former Blue Hose team captain who graduated from PC in 2004 with a bachelors of science in social studies with a minor in secondary education, Assey completed his master’s degree at St. Edward’s in May of 2006. He graduated with an Arts of Human Services degree with a concentration in sports management. Assey was recruited to play two sports at PC, suiting up for both the football and baseball team. Assey left the football team to concentrate on baseball after his freshman campaign. Assey pitched and played in the field for PC. He was a part of PC’s 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship team. The Blue Hose participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2003. The West Columbia, S.C., native played high school baseball at Brookland-Cayce HS for his father Charlie Assey, who was a four-year starter for the Bucs. Assey was a part of BrooklandCayce’s 1998 South Carolina 3A state championship team.

BIG SOUTH

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

34

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in fall 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. He has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the league as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University.

Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual NCAA National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth year of the Big South’s football existence. The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”, was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the conference’s 25th anniversary. The league also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-08, with Liberty University’s 10year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-07 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
