2011 OUTLOOK

CSU Softball Aims For Continued Success in 2011 The Charleston Southern softball team is coming off its first 30 win season since 1993 and looks to take the final step from being a Big South competitor to Big South contender. After a third place finish in the Big South in 2010 the Bucs are in a position to challenge for a Big South Championship and reach their goal of NCAA Tournament participation. “I’m extremely excited about our potential in 2011,” says Coach Winkler. “We have more depth and competition on our roster than we have had in the past and this has been a major factor in our improvement over the off-season.” IN THE CIRCLE Kimberly Hobbs returns for the Bucs after a record-breaking season in which she allowed the fewest walks per game in Big South history. Morgan Dowdy gained valuable experience in the circle during her freshman year and looks to step into a bigger role in 2011. The Bucs will also count on freshman Hayes Holdsworth to add depth to the staff. Senior Sondra Vetter will begin the season rehabbing from a shoulder injury and will hope to pitch later in the spring. “We are going to rely on all three of our pitchers on staff to match up with opponents as best as possible and give us a chance to win games,” says Winkler. “Kimberly and Morgan have improved a great deal under new pitching coach Meredith Felts, and I’m excited to see how their hard work has paid off against opposing offenses.” BEHIND THE PLATE After relying almost exclusively on Erin Kegley behind the plate in 2010, the Buccaneers will have a great deal of depth at the catcher position. Kegley returns, and the Bucs welcome sophomore Melanie Stickney, a transfer from South Florida of the Big East, and freshman Ari Tedesco. Kegley is coming off a nine home run season and will look to lead the team during her senior season while Stickney and Tedesco will also contribute at other positions. “It’s nice to have options behind the plate, as Erin got beat up catching almost every game for us in 2010,” adds Winkler. “I look for her offensive numbers to improve even more by having her split time with Melanie and Ari behind the dish. Each one of our catchers does a great job working with our pitching staff while all three bring a lot to our offense this year as well.” INFIELD The Buccaneers return both of their middle infielders in junior shortstop Megan Lombard and sophomore second baseman Trea Steele. Lombard will look to add to one of the most impressive offensive resumes in CSU history after hitting .340 with seven home runs in 2010. Steele batted .286 during her freshman campaign while also adding solid defense. “Strong teams are built up the middle and it’s very important that we bring back both of our middle infielders in Megan and Trea,” says Winkler. “Both had solid offensive seasons and will be relied upon heavily in our lineup this year, but more importantly we look for them to lead our infield after getting to work together for another season.” The Bucs will have a great deal of competition at the corner infield positions in 2011. Jessica Brock will move into the infield at third base this year after playing mostly in right field in 2010. Freshman Stephanie Sbardella will also see time at third. Kristin Kelleher will appear at first base after being mostly used as a designated hitter last year. Junior college transfer Kimberly Braxton (Spartanburg Methodist) will compete for playing time at first after crafting a very solid fall season. “We have a lot of options at both corner infield positions this year, and I look for these girls to push each other throughout the season,” says Winkler.

2

“Kristin Kelleher has proven that she can put up solid numbers offensively, and I’m looking for her to contribute defensively as well this season. Jessica and Stephanie both have the ability to be big power threats in our lineup and will look to lock down the hot corner after both playing multiple positions in the fall. Kimberly Braxton stepped in and had a solid fall offensively and is our most experienced first baseman on the defensive side.” OUTFIELD The Bucs feature four returners and three newcomers who will all compete in the outfield in 2011. Junior Melissa Adams has the most experience of the group after starting 57 games in 2010 and will play in center field. Jana Matthews returns after a record-breaking freshman season in which she shattered the all-time program record with 12 home runs. Also returning to the CSU outfield are sophomores Courtney Konyk and Jasmine Conley. Three freshmen will also play in the outfield in 2011 with the additions of Hayes Holdsworth, Lizzy Olmstead and Ari Tedesco. “We have the luxury of having many different combinations in our outfield this season with seven players being able to contribute,” says Winkler. “It is going to be difficult making an everyday lineup with so many players being capable of adding something to our lineup, but this is a very good problem to have. Jana has proven that she is one of the biggest power threats in the Big South, and Melissa has had very good offensive numbers during conference play in her career. I look for both to continue to improve this year and have breakout seasons. Jasmine is our most improved player this year and after mainly being used as a pinch runner last year, she’ll see time in right field this season. Courtney continues to improve as a slapper and gives us another speed option in the lineup. Hayes, Lizzy and Ari will all see time in our outfield after Hayes had a very successful fall season, and Lizzy and Ari are two of the fastest players on our roster.” SCHEDULE CSU opens the season Feb. 11-13 in Columbia, S.C., competing in four games during the Palmetto State Showdown. This early tournament will help the team get used to the level of intensity needed to compete for a Big South title. The Bucs begin their home schedule with a tournament Feb. 18-19, playing host to Virginia Tech of the ACC along with Mercer and Ohio. Big South play begins March 30 as the Bucs play host to Coastal Carolina in a double-header. CSU will also face Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb and Radford at home during the conference slate. The Bucs travel to play Big South series at Liberty, and Winthrop, also competing in a single game at Coastal Carolina. Midweek games at South Carolina and Longwood will break up the conference slate. WINKLER ON THE 2011 BUCCANEERS “This is our most athletic and deepest roster since I have been at Charleston Southern, and I look forward to our program taking another big step forward this season. After showing that we can compete in 2010 we look forward to challenging for the top spot in the Big South Conference. Our pitchers have the talent to keep us in every game we play, and defensively we have our strongest roster yet. We are coming off of one of the best offensive seasons in program history and have the potential to be much better this year. We will feature not only much more speed but also a great deal more power this year. Our goal has been and will continue to be reaching NCAA postseason play, and I’m excited to see our team grow on our path to reaching that goal.”

Head Coach

Third Season

Butler ‘04

SHANE WINKLER Shane Winkler enters his third season as the head softball coach at Charleston Southern, having guided CSU to a 56-61-1 record over his first two seasons at the helm. Winkler has been instrumental in restoring a winning tradition to the Buccaneer softball program. In 2010, CSU posted its first 30-win season since 1993, setting numerous program records along the way. Under the direction of Winkler, CSU has had seven players earn a total of eight Big South All-Conference Team honors. Additionally, in 2010, senior Caitlin Allen became the first CSU softball player to be named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The 2010 team went 30-28-1, and 8-10 in Big South play. CSU slugged a program-record 45 home runs, shattering the previous record while also setting standards in slugging percentage and total bases. The Bucs earned impressive wins over No. 15 Louisville and a 6-0 victory against Virginia Tech, and took 5-of-6 meetings from College of Charleston. Jana Matthews earned Big South All-Conference First Team, while teammates Megan Hall, Shayla Cullum and Kristin Kelleher collected second team all-conference. In his first season at CSU, he led the Bucs to a 26-33 overall record with a 7-11 mark in the Big South. CSU tied for the best start to the conference schedule in program history, jumping out to a 5-1 record. The Bucs also entered the conference postseason as the No. 4 seed, the highest finish since 2001. CSU finished with a 2-2 record in the 2009 postseason, including a win over No. 2 Winthrop, one game out of the Championship game. Amy Trenkamp and Jamie Wellons were named first team all-conference, while Melissa Adams and Megan Hall were tabbed to the second team, During the summer of 2009, Winkler was hired as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), which is the only professional softball league in the United States. The Bandits boasted a 27-12 record, the best in the NPF. Winkler worked with a star-studded roster, complete with several Olympic performers, such as Jenny Finch (Arizona). Hired before the 2008-09 school year, Winkler came to Charleston Southern after three seasons as the assistant coach at Marshall Univer-

4

sity in Huntington, West Virginia. While at Marshall, Winkler worked mainly with the offense and outfield while assisting with the overall team defense, recruiting, and all administrative duties within the program. During his three seasons the Thundering Herd had a combined record of 91-78. During his time with the Marshall offense, the team broke its home run record twice. Winkler had the opportunity to coach four players that continued their softball careers in the NPF. During the summer of 2007, Winkler coached as an associate field manager with the Akron Racers of the NPF. While with the Racers he coached NCAA National Champions Alicia Hollowell (Arizona) and Caitlyn Benyi (UCLA) in addition to many other top softball players from the PAC 10, SEC, and ACC. The Racers finished the 2007 season in 2nd place in the NPF standings earning a trip to Kimberly, Wisconsin, for the league playoffs. Prior to Marshall, Winkler spent one season as the Co-Head Coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Ill. He inherited a team at DACC that had won 11 games in 2004 and led the program to its first winning season in 12 years. Winkler began coaching softball while in high school as a volunteer with the Kentland, Indiana, Summer Softball Association. He also spent one season as the hitting coach for South Newton High School in Kentland while attending Purdue in 2002. Winkler competed for the Butler baseball team after also playing at Purdue University and Illinois Central College. He played professional minor league baseball in both 2004 and 2006. After graduation from Butler, Winkler signed a professional contract with the Florence Freedom of the Independent Frontier League in July 2004. In 2006 Winkler signed to play in Amarillo, Texas, with the Amarillo Dillas of the United League before being traded to the Washington Wild Things in Washington, Penn. Winkler earned his associate’s degree in general education from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., in 2002. He then received his bachelor of arts degree in communication studies from Butler University in 2004.

Assistant Coach First Season James Madison ‘10

MEREDITH FELTS Meredith Felts comes to CSU after completing a Softball Coaching Internship at the University of North Carolina. While with the Tar Heels, she served as tournament director for multiple home tournaments. Felts’ main responsibilities also included scouting opponents’ pitching, evaluating recruits, game day operations, practice planning and simulating opposing pitchers in practice. Prior to UNC, Felts was an assistant coach for the Mannheim (Germany) Tornados Juniors in 2009. During her time with the Tornados, she planned and implemented team practices and assisted in game day operations. Felts also taught skill development with an emphasis on pitching, among other player development responsibilities. Felts had an accomplished playing career as a pitcher for the James Madison Dukes. As a four year starter, she amassed nearly every major single-season and career pitching record at JMU. Felts is the School’s all-time leader in wins (61), ERA (1.62), games started (85), complete games (52), strikeouts (581) and

shutouts (20). She also holds single-season records in strikeouts (184), wins (18), complete games (19) and shutouts (8). Felts took home several Colonial Athletic Association awards, including CAA Pitcher of the Week on eight occasions (20062009), CAA All-Rookie Team (2006), Three-time CAA AllConference Team (2007-09) and CAA Softball Tournament Outstanding Player (2009). She also gained national recognition as a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All MidAtlantic Team (2008), a two-time member of the VA Sports Information Directors’ Association All-State Team (2008-09) and she was named the VA Sports Information Directors’ Association University Pitcher of the Year (2009). In addition to an impressive playing and coaching resume, Felts has been active in softball camps at JMU and UNC in a variety of capacities, over the past several years. Felts graduated from James Madison University in May of 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a minor in general business.

Q&A WITH COACH WINKLER What is your coaching philosophy? My programs will always be very aggressive. I believe players compete at their best when they are having fun playing the game. Our players will work hard and you will be able to see that they are enjoying competing together every day of a 56 game season. We know that mistakes will be made, but it is important for our players to know that they will have the opportunity to grow from their mistakes.

What are the team’s goals for the 2011 season? Our goal each season is to compete for a Big South Championship and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. CSU has never played in the NCAAs and we’re working to take the program to that level. Each season we’ve taken a big step forward and after winning 30 games last year, we are in position to challenge for a Big South Title.

How will the nonconference schedule help prepare the team for Big South play? Many teams plan on being at their best going into the conference tournament at the end of the season. Our hopes are to be playing at our highest potential early in the season and maintain that level of excellence. With our goal being to win the Big South Championship, we have to prepare by playing at a championship level many times throughout the season. Our preseason tournaments are opportunities to compete for championships against many solid programs. Our experience early in the season will have us ready for Big South play.

What are the strengths of a Shane Winkler-coached team? My teams always show up ready to compete. Our practices are structured at a very high pace with a lot of competition so that games are slowed down a little and players can relax and have fun competing. We are always aggressive and will look to take advantage of our opponents’ mistakes in all aspects of the game. Finally, my teams have a great deal of faith and know they can overcome any obstacle. God has blessed all of us with the ability to compete at a high level, and everyday we will compete for His glory and with that approach wins and losses will take care of themselves.

BIG SOUTH

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of Developing Leaders Through Athletics. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. He has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

22

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002 and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highestever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, Developing Leaders Through Athletics was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s onfield accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

2010 IN REVIEW

Bucs Post 30-win Season, Set Records in 2010 The 2010 Charleston Southern softball season marked continued improvement, highlighted by records being broken, 30 wins on the season and a team winning record. The Bucs finished with a final record of 30-28-1 and an 8-10 mark in the Big South, before being eliminated in the conference tournament after a 1-2 record. In just his second year as a Head Coach, Shane Winkler has seemingly changed the culture surrounding the CSU softball program. In each of his first two years, Winkler has created a team motto heading in to the season. The 2010 motto: “Why not us? Why not now?” The slogan turned out to be more than just words to this group of Buccaneers, who posted the most wins the program has seen since 1993. “I’m very proud of this year’s team and what they accomplished,” reflected Winkler. “Only about one-third of the country has a shot at 30 wins, so that says a lot about this group of players.” If there is one common theme in all sports, it’s that winning breeds winning. Getting over the elusive .500 mark can be a struggle for some teams, as it has been for CSU softball for nearly a decade. But the 2010 Bucs managed to break the seal with a winning season and now have no plans of looking back. “We took another big step forward by posting the first winning season since 2001 and that is only going to help with recruiting future players,” said Winkler. “For the past two years we have sold the idea of being a part of a winning program and now we have established that we are a winning program and only look to get better.” CSU capped off the regular season with a five game winning streak, the longest win streak in the Winkler era. The Bucs also posted some impressive individual wins on the season, with a 9-4 victory over No. 15 ranked Louisville and a 6-0 win vs. Virginia Tech. CSU faced off with crosstown rivals College of Charleston six times on the year, taking five out of six wins vs. the SoCon member. These wins helped the Bucs to tally 56 wins over the past two seasons, compared to 33 in the two years before that. Now the goal for this team has changed from being a Big South competitor, to a Big South contender. “We are all proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past two seasons,” said Winkler. “The goal is going to remain winning a Big South Championship and making it into the NCAA Tournament.” The Bucs didn’t get to a 30-win season by accident; they got there by hitting the cover off the ball, while breaking nearly every major team and individual batting record. Megan Lombard broke individual season records for at bats, runs scored and total bases. Jana Matthews chipped in with an outstanding freshman season, breaking the single season home run record.

As a team, CSU set new program marks for homeruns, total hits, slugging percentage and total bases. To sum it up, the Bucs broke so many records this year that there was a new record book created for them. Also contributing to the successful year were two seniors that stepped in to leadership roles for the season. Megan Hall capped off one of the best careers in CSU history by leading the team with a .369 batting average. Hall finished her storied career as the all-time leader in runs scored, while finishing second in total hits, walks, onbase percentage and total bases. Caitlin Allen also had a career year as a senior, tallying a 7-3 record in the circle to go along with a pair of saves. She finished her career tied for first in both single season and career saves. Allen also was named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the first ever CSU softball player to receive the award. “Our seniors were a very big part of our success this season,” added Winkler. “They did a great job of leading our team both on and off the field as both Megan and Caitlin were great players and great students. We are going to miss their contributions, but it is nice to only have to replace two seniors compared to six a year ago. The experience that our young kids received will only help us as we move forward.” Buccaneer fans are certainly excited coming off of an outstanding season, looking back at a host of accomplishments. On the campus of CSU, it’s understood that there is plenty to be proud of from 2010, but even more to look forward to in 2011.
