BUCCANEER 2011 OUTLOOK After two consecutive 12 win seasons, the 2011 Buccaneers come into the season with a lot of guile and confidence as a squad. The Buccaneers look to follow up the 2010 Big South Title campaign with another strong year. In the 2009 and 2010 seasons, the Bucs posted a 24-13-3 (11-4-3) record with two top of the conference table finishes and a share of last year’stitle. This is a result of hard work, team effort, and shared faith for one goal. As this year looms, Coach Terrill and the Lady Bucs intend to continue with this success. CSU is picked to finish 3rd in the Big South this season after being in a four way tie for first in 2010. Coach Terrill on 2011 selection “ We are very surprised and also pleased to be shown so much respect from our colleagues. That shows us that we are moving in the right direction and the strides we have made these past years have been noted by others. After having graduation hit us as hard as it did, we have brought in a good freshman class. Combine our incoming class with a solid core of seniors and we will try to live up to what others expect from us. If our spring season as well as some of preseason is any indication of what our future holds in the Big South, I am excited to see what can happen.” In 2010 was picked to finish 2nd in the preseason polls but ended up having a share of the Big South Regular Season Title. After posting back to back 12 win seasons the CSU Lady Bucs have now amassed a 35-33-13 (.512%) record since 2000. Goalkeepers CSU will have a dual threat in between the posts this year. redshirt senior, Amy Arroyo was solid for the Lady Bucs last year but is overcoming an injury suffered last season. Being trusted a lot her junior season, the coaches are looking forward to seeing her compete for the position and to keep their goals against average way down. Along with Arroyo, is redshirt freshman Caitlin Cody, who the coaches are very excited to see compete for the position. Cody was touted as one of the best goalkeepers coming out of the state of Tennessee in her graduating class of 2009. Cody has had a full year of training and is looked to step in and help the Lady Bucs with keeping clean sheets throughout the season. Defenders Chloe Urig (Soph.), Andrea Williams (Sr.), Tori Wright (Soph.) and Casey Bolduc (Sr. and Tri-Captain) are the most experienced defenders returning for Coach Terrill. All of these defenders played significant roles in winning a share of the Big South Regular season title last year and plan to contribute ever more this year. Casey Bolduc has made her stamp on the Big South Conference as one of the best if not the best man to man marker in the league. With Bolduc’s pace and hard nose mentality she helps anchor the back. Along with Bolduc steps in Chloe Urig, who as a freshman played a pivotal part in the Lady Bucs defensive last year. Positionally on the pitch, Chloe tends to put herself in the right place at the right time. Tori Wright is another sophomore who is slated to be in contention for a spot in the back. After a good spring, the coaching staff is looking for Wright to make strong strides for a position. Rounding out the upperclassmen is Andrea Williams, who has struggled through injury but after a solid spring season is being looked at as a leader on and off the pitch. As a senior, Williams is looked at to keep up the positive momentum gained from her good spring season. With a loss of some seniors in the defense Coach Terrill and Rostin looked to pick up four freshmen in the offseason to add to their returners. All of the freshmen are looked to step in and make an impact in the back. CSU has Jacquelyn Leo, Katelyn Faucette, and Hali Singleton, who seem to give CSU a lot of athleticism and height, which in soccer now seems to be a move towards taller defenders. Along with them, comes the tenacious and feisty Stephanie Hand, though not as tall as the other three poses a threat to most attacking players with her hardnosed, “in your face” playing style. With this being a high pressure position for the Lady Bucs, the Freshman are being looked at to come in and make an impact quickly. Another senior thrown in the mix of defense is Anja Djumisic, who will be looked at to possibly play in the midfield or defense. Midfielders CSU, in 2011 will look to play at times two defensive midfielders in which Anja Djumisic (Sr. Tri-Captain) will be an anchor for the Lady Bucs. Having the trust and belief of the coaching staff, Djumisic will have the responsibility of keeping the game in front of her and making sure the team’s shape is always in order. With graduation hitting the Lady Bucs upperclassmen in the midfield, CSU will look to one of its more dynamic players in Rebecca Hollstegge (Jr.). Having not had a single season clear of some type of injury thus far, Hollstegge looks to have a breakout year in the midfield. Olivia Urig, is considered one of the most skillful players on the Lady Bucs roster and as a senior, she is looked at to fulfill leadership roles on and off the pitch. All of the upperclassmen are viewed by the staff as very dynamic, game changing players, with the ability to make an impact for the Lady Bucs midfield. To add to the upperclassmen there is a great class of freshman midfielders to arrive at CSU. Misty Tatom and Gina Thomas are touted as very crafty and skillful players with the ball at their feet. Whether playing on the flanks or in the middle, both players possess the ability to take players on and get in behind defenders to link up with the forwards. Kenandra DeSaussare is a boast of speed for the CSU midfield, being one of the fastest players Coach Terrill has recruited. DeSaussare has a knack to get in behind defenders which will aid the CSU attack and keep opposing teams on their heels with her speed. CSU looks to get a lot of numbers from the midfield into the attack whether the formation is a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2. CSU’s midfield is looking to get out in the open and make the game enjoyable to watch. Forwards After two great seasons with standout and recent CSU graduate, Marky Boyce as a mainstay, the Lady Bucs look to keep the line of great strikers alive. Sophomores, Toni Lashley and Ali Lewis saw valuable playing time last season and aided Boyce to one of her best seasons. After waiting in the wings for their chance to make their own stamp on CSU, both Lewis and Lashley are expected to make a huge impact in the forward position. Lashley and Lewis both recorded double digits in games played and had some key goals as well. Freshmen Chelsea Phillips, Kenandra DeSaussare and redshirt Freshman Aislinn Mcllvenny, all come in being expected to contribute to the attack of the Lady Bucs. All have tremendous speed and high expectations for the year to come. Lashley, DeSaussare and Phillips will be looked at to get in behind opponents defensive and cause havoc with their speed. Along with that the ability to link up with their fellow forwards and make good runs are expected from them during the season. Mcllvenny and Lewis, who both can shoot from distance are viewed to play more as holding forwards. Both players can play with the ball at their feet and will be asked to help hold the attack up so the rest of the team can get into the attacking third. Lewis has been touted as a clinical finisher and a nose for goal while Mcllvenny has a solid strike from distance.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highestever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
