Al Givens Head Volleyball Coach
William Jennings Bryan, 1975 * 1st year at CSU (35th year coaching)
Givens comes to CSU after turning around the program at Texas A&M International. Last season at TAMIU, Givens was named the 2012 Heartland Conference’s Coach of the Year after leading the DustDevils to a 14-18 record and their first bid in the Heartland Conference Tournament in five years. Heading into Givens’ first season at TAMIU, the DustDevils won one match in 2010 (1-25) and had not qualified for their league tournament in four seasons.
Givens boasts an impressive resume as he takes over the reins of the Lady Bucs’ volleyball program, bringing 34 years of coaching experience over all levels. At the Division I level, Givens spent time at Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Weber State, where he combined for 378 career wins. He has 392 wins at the university level and will be looking for 400th career win in the 2012 season. He replaces longtime CSU head coach Danyel Bellush, who spent 15 seasons as Lady Bucs’ head coach before stepping down following the 2011 season. Givens started his coaching career in Yuma, Arizona, in 1977 where he was head coach at Kofa High School. After four years at Kofa, he made the jump to college volleyball taking the head coach job at Arizona Western College. In 1984, he made the leap into Division I, taking an assistant coach position at the University of Mississippi. The following season he was promoted to head coach and spent one year as the Rebels’ head coach before accepting the same role at Texas A&M University in College Station in 1986. During his two years at Ole Miss, the Rebels went 50-28, and Givens had a 29-15 record as the head coach. During his time with the Aggies, Givens picked up numerous Top 25 wins and one Top 10 win over No. 7 Texas in 1991, finishing his career with the Aggies with an overall 123-122 record. After seven years with the Aggies, he accepted the head coaching job at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He had several Top 25 wins and one Top 10 win over No. 10 Utah in 2002. He was named Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2006 and finished his 18-season career at Weber State as the longest tenured volleyball coach in the history of the Big Sky Conference.
6
During his tenure as a head coach, (28 years at DI & II) Givens has coached 154 academic all-conference selections, 64 allconference players, 10 all tournament team selections, four all South Region players, 4 Newcomers of the Year, two Freshman of the Year, one NCAA Woman of the Year and one NCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, several Regional and National Academic All-Americans.
Givens received his bachelor’s degree in 1975 from William Jennings Bryan College, where he also played varsity soccer and baseball. He received his master’s degree from Northern Arizona University in 1983.
He is married to Flossie McNally, a former volleyball coach who he met while coaching at rival schools in Arizona. He and his wife have three children, two daughters, Stephanie and Cori, and a son, Matthew.

2012 CSU Volleyball Season Preview With a team featuring two seniors in Michaela Luna and Wynter Davis and just seven upperclassmen, youth will play a major impact on the 2012 roster and season as five freshmen join the roster and will challenge immediately for playing time after a 5-25 2011 season, in which the Buccaneers went 1-13 in Big South Conference play. The program turnaround will begin with new leadership up top as Givens and Assistant Coach Kim Lissinna begin their first year in the program. Givens brings 28 years of Division I coaching experience along with 392 career victories, having coached at various schools around the Southeast, including Ole Miss and Texas A&M and looks for the team to continue to build on the progress it has made in the preseason. “The players have embraced the coaching change and are hungry for success,” commented Givens on the team’s preseason work. “We are focusing on the process knowing that if we get the process correct, the outcome will take care of itself.” Lissinna, a former student-athlete of Givens and recent graduate of Weber State University where she was a four-year starter and captain of the squad, is entering her second season in collegiate volleyball coaching, coming to CSU from Minot State University in Minot, N.D., and is also looking forward to the upcoming season. “I am grateful for the opportunity to coach at CSU alongside my mentor, Al Givens,” said Lissinna. “I am inspired by the players’ attitude and effort every day in practice and look forward to the season.” Libero Sophomore captain Ashley Higginbothem, junior Maggie Murphy and senior Luna return to man the libero position for the Buccaneers in the 2012 season as the duo look to provide steady leadership and passing from the backline for Coach Givens as the team adjusts to playing with each other early in the season. Higginbothem led the team with 422 digs on the season, averaging 3.98 digs per game to finish seventh in the Big South rankings for the 2011 season. She also added 3.79 digs per game during conference matches and was one of only four players on roster to see action in all 30 matches on the season. Murphy also saw action in 20 matches on the year, contributing 37 digs to the team’s totals as Charleston Southern averaged 13.93 digs per set as a team throughout the season. Luna will also provide experience and depth at the position as well as helping assume leadership in the CSU defensive efforts.
Setters Sophomore Kirsten Struksnes, junior captain Laura Grace Swindler and freshman Cassidy Greer will help set up the Buccaneers offense in the 2012 season as CSU looks to replace departed senior Amy Nokes’ production in the offense.
Struksnes returns after seeing action in 26 matches and 78 sets, recording three starts as the rising sophomore finished second on the team with 319 set assists and added 114 digs in seeing action on the court. Swindler also returns to provide experience and depth at the position, while Greer was a standout at Mary G. Montgomery High School, playing under Coach Leslie Gates.

2012 CSU Volleyball Season Preview
Middle Blocker The middle returns the most battle-tested depth on the roster as Davis, Erin LaVenice and freshman Meredith Parrott will all see playing time for a group that finished fifth in the Big South rankings at 1.93 blocks per game.
Davis and LaVenice led all CSU hitters last season as the duo combined for over 350 kills in the 2011 season. Davis led the way, hitting .231 from the floor and added 92 blocks. LaVenice added 153 kills and 82 total blocks at the net, and her height at the net has been impressive in the preseason as the Buccaneers defense has currently outshone their offensive efforts.
Parrott comes to Charleston Southern by way of Mobile, Ala., and Cottage Hill Christian Academy where she currently holds the record for most kills in a match at College Hill. She was also a member of the CHCA 2011 State Championship team and earned State MVP honors and will challenge for playing time immediately up front.
Outside Hitter 2011 CSU kills leader Kayla Klinger, redshirt junior Ashley Johnston and sophomore Sydney Tracy return to pace the Buccaneers on the outside, while a trio of freshmen will jump into the mix and look to start right away. Klinger led all Buccaneers with 219 kills on the season, playing in all 30 matches as a sophomore. The Cary, Ill., native is joined by Johnston, who played one of the best matches on the team last season, recording 14 kills and 20 digs against East Carolina on September 10th and looks to provide consistency on the outside for the team. Tracy added 203 kills and 140 digs in providing a good balance for the team all over the court. Siraya Windsor, Catie Hurt and Katrina Houston are all poised to make an impact on the outside in their first year wearing the blue and gold. Windsor comes to CSU after a decorated career at White Knoll High School in Lexington, S.C., where she was named the 4A Player of the Year after a season which saw her record 262 kills, hitting .328 percent from the floor. Hurt adds Club Team success to the roster as her team made it to Nationals in her junior season at Wando High School, while Houston was an All-Area and All-District Player of the Year for North Stafford High School. The trio will all look to provide youthful energy on the outside as the Buccaneers battle their way through the regular season. Schedule Charleston Southern’s schedule features four tournaments over the first four weekends of play, as well as home-andhome series against Big South opponents Presbyterian, Campbell, High Point, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. The Buccaneers will feature home tournaments with Canisius, USC Upstate, Mercer and Furman on August 31-September 1, as well as Wofford, Stetson and The Citadel from September 14-15. CSU will also take part in the Georgia Tech Courtyard Invitational, taking on Southern Methodist, Georgia Tech and Cal State Fullerton, as well as the Loyola University Tournament, featuring matches against Morgan State, Loyola and Rider.

The Big South Conference took a big step in its young history in the Fall of 2002 when, for the first time in its 19-year history, the League crowned a football champion. Football had always been a long range goal of the Conference. In the early 1990s, football seemed on the horizon in the Big South, as Charleston Southern fielded its first team in 1991 and the Conference added Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, football never got off the ground in the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awarded its first automatic bid to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketball began to flourish. The idea was revived in 1997 when Elon joined the Big South. That gave the Conference three full-time members with football programs -- half the number needed to be recognized as a Conference by the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. 10, 1999, Coastal Carolina University announced it would add football by the Fall of 2003. The wheels were set in motion to establish a Conference home for the League’s football-playing members.
After attempts to form a joint football conference with the Atlantic Sun Conference failed, the Big South began Associate Members: Stony Brook Universi- recruiting more members to join its ty (football), Bucknell University (women’s fledgling football league. On May 23, golf), College of the Holy Cross (women’s 2001, the dream became a reality when the Big South’s Council of Chief Executive golf). Officers voted unanimously to add football Championship Sports (19): Baseball, Men’s as the Conference’s 18th championship sport. It became the first sport added since Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s 1997 when men’s and women’s indoor Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, track were incorporated as championship Football, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Men’s sports. Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Indoor and Shortly after the approval of football, the Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Indoor Big South’s recruiting efforts paid off, as the and Outdoor Track & Field, Volleyball, addition of Gardner-Webb University as an Women’s Lacrosse (2012-13) associate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that with the addition of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a four-team League could begin play later

that Fall, with Coastal Carolina coming into the fold in the 2003 season. However, scheduling conflicts could not be worked out, so the Fall of 2002 was designated as the kick-off to Big South Football. The Big South continued to look for additional members, with a goal of eventually having seven or eight playing members. On Dec. 10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state of Virginia -- Virginia Military Institute, announced it would join the Big South in all sports in 2003 and maintain the Conference’s football membership at five following Elon’s departure. In 2006, the League moved one step closer to etching its status as a viable football Conference. First, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Warren Koegel was appointed to the FCS Football Selection Committee, the Big South’s first-ever representative on a national football committee. On April 6, the Big South added Presbyterian College as its sixth football member. Presbyterian, now in the final year of its transition to Division I, officially joined the Big South in all sports in 2008. On May 26, 2006, the Big South announced that associate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008, solidifying the Big South’s football make-up for years to come. With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign. League champion Coastal Carolina became the first football member to advance to the postseason when the Chanticleers received an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Big South took another step closer to becoming eligible for an automatic berth when on March 20, 2007, the Conference announced the addition of Stony Brook University as an associate football member beginning in 2008. All the efforts came to fruition in the spring of 2008 when the NCAA announced the expansion of the FCS Playoffs from 16 to 20 teams beginning in

The Big South Conference 2010 and granting the Big South an automatic bid starting that year. The growth of Big South football has been exceptional since its inception just nine years ago. The Big South experienced its most successful campaign in 2006 with Coastal Carolina’s FCS playoff berth; two teams (Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern) ranked in the national Top 25 in the same week for the first time; four appearances on the ESPN family of networks; and the first-ever NFL Draft pick and first finalist for the Walter Payton Award in Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen. In 2007, Liberty won the first of its four consecutive Big South football championships in record-breaking fashion just two years after finishing 1-10 overall; Coastal’s Jerome Simpson (second round) and Gardner-Webb’s Brian Johnston (seventh round) were selected in the NFL Draft, and the League’s five football members combined to average a Big South-record 7,488 fans per game. The Big South produced another nationally-ranked program in 2008 in Liberty, as well as its fourth NFL draft pick in three years – Liberty’s Rashad Jennings (seventh round).
on the same day, when Gardner-Webb won in overtime at Akron and Liberty defeated Ball State on the road on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the season, Stony Brook extended its football membership through the 2015 campaign. Individually, Liberty’s Mike Brown led the nation in total offense while Stony Brook was the only FCS team to have two 1,000-yard rushers in Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Coastal Carolina emerged from a three-way tie for first-place with the Big South’s first-ever automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The Chanticleers also became the first Conference member to host a football playoff game as Coastal faced Western Illinois in the first round at Brooks Stadium. The Conference also had its largest television package to date, as a record eight League games were broadcast while Big South football members appeared on TV 12 of the 13 weeks of the season. With an automatic playoff berth officially awarded to its annual champion, the Big South is poised to continue its ascension as a national competitor in FCS football with an eye on advancing in the postseason and capturing the ultimate goal – a national championship.
The 2010 season saw the Big South make noise around the country early in the season with two wins over FBS opponents
