2012-2013 Season Preview “Humble and Hungry” is the theme for the 20122013 Charleston Southern women’s basketball team, based on 1 Peter 5:6, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand that he may lift you up in due time. (NIV)” and the Lady Bucs are hungry for the upcoming season as CSU begins their first season under head coach Fred Applin. Applin joins the Lady Bucs from Greeneville, N.C. where he served as an assistant at East Carolina University for the past two seasons and boasts an impressive resume with experience in the ACC, Big 12, PAC 12 and Conference USA. “I have been really pleased with the team’s progress during preseason. They have been going very hard in practice and preparing for the upcoming basketball season,” commented Applin on the upcoming season. “The expectations for the season is to compete for 40 minutes each game. We have to do the little things that could help us win game, like rebounding and getting the 50/50 balls.” The Lady Bucs were picked sixth in the annual Big South Preseason Coaches’ poll released in early October after an 18-15 season where CSU went 9-9 in Big South Conference play, advancing to the semifinals of the Big South Championships and earning a berth into the Women’s Basketball Invitational. CSU has an abundance of upperclassman leadership on the team led by leading returning scorers Rachelle Coward and Lakeitha Alston as the senior duo was named to the College Sports Madness Big South preseason women’s basketball team. Coward, a Nova Scotia, Canada native, joined the team following her sophomore season at UNC Charlotte and made an immediate impact on the Charleston Southern roster, leading the team with 17.9 points per game, increasing her output to 19.3 points in Big South play in earning preseason First Team honors. She set a Charleston Southern single game record for three-pointers made last season against Liberty with nine and scored double-figures in 15 consecutive games to pace the CSU efforts on the season. She will reprise her role on the outside with Alston, a preseason Second Team selection, who returns as the Lady Bucs’ leading rebounder in averaging 5.6 rebounds per game, while contributing 16.3 points per game on the year. Alston led CSU with four double-doubles last season, including a 31-point-10 rebound effort in Charleston Southern’s 82-77 victory over Clemson. The Myrtle Beach, S.C. native ranked second in the Big South in field goal percentage, connecting on 53.7 percent of her attempts from the field on the season.

Charleston Southern opens up the 2012-2013 regular season on November 10th at the Big South/SoCon Challenge hosted by UNC Asheville as the Lady Bucs take on UNC Greensboro. CSU opens up their home schedule on November 14th with their opener at Buccaneer Field House.

Guards Seniors Kiki Rutledge, Shay Jones and Helen Terry lead a deep back court for the Buccaneers in the 2012-2013 season and will be joined by returning juniors Erin Bratcher, Kirklin Kirkpatrick and newcomers DJ Fowler and Alyssa Mann. Terry was the third leading scorer for the Lady Bucs on the season, only playing in 14 games due to injuries but averaged 10.4 points per

game while splitting time as the primary point guard with Jones and Rutledge. Jones led the team with 66 assists on the season and added three rebounds per game for the Lady Bucs, while Rutledge also missed time with injury but contributed 6.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, starting in 18 of the 19 games she dressed in Charleston Southern blue and gold.

Bratcher saw action in 27 games for the Lady Bucs, finishing second on the team with 59 three-pointers behind Coward, connecting on 39.9 percent of her attempts from behind the arc with a pair of 20 point games in conference play against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb and will look to reprise her role as a gunner on the wings for Applin, while Kirkpatrick provides depth for the Lady Bucs, seeing action in 47 games at Charleston Southern.

Fowler comes to Charleston Southern by way of St. Petersburg College, where she played for the past two seasons under Coach Denisha Davidson. Fowler lined up at point guard for 27 games in the 2011-2012 season for the Titans, taking on most of the ball-handling duties on the court. Mann comes to CSU from IMG Academy where she was named the 2011 MVP after averaging 17.0 points, five assists and four steals per game. Both are expected to compete for playing time immediately during the season. Forwards Coward and Alston will be joined on the wings and down in the post by junior Anicia Dotson and newcomer Christal Barnett this season. Dotson, a Central, S.C. native, was one of three players in the CSU lineup to start every conference game joining Coward and Alston on the court and was the second-leading rebounder on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and added 8.1 points per game to her resume, scoring double-digits in nine games on the season and added two double-doubles for the Lady Bucs. Barnett joins the team from Colorado Mesa University, seeing action in four games with the Mavericks during the 2011-2012 season and the sophomore will provide depth in the early part of the season. Centers A pair of new faces join returning sophomore Whitney Collins in the paint as transfer Carra Coy and freshman Monique Maximilien will line up at center for Applin during the season. Collins saw action in 11 games last season for the Lady Bucs and has been one of the top surprises in preseason camp as the Gastonia, N.C. native is expected to see a majority of the playing time in the middle for the Lady Bucs early in the season. Coy, a transfer from Big South opponent Liberty University, saw action in 25 games for the Flames as the 6-6 athlete finished fourth on the team in blocks during the 2009-2010 season as Liberty won the Big South Championship, advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Maximilien, a Coconut Creek, Fla. native lined up at center for North Broward Prep where the 6-4 athlete led the Eagles to the 2011 Florida State Finals and was named to the Florida State All-Tournament team. During the tournament run, she averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds in the Final Four, putting up 18 points, 18 boards and six blocks in a semifinal win over Tallahassee Rickards.

The Big South Conference BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE QUICK FACTS Address: 7233 Pineville-Matthews Road, Suite 100 Charlotte, NC 28226 Phone: (704) 341-7990 Fax: (704) 341-7991 www.BigSouthSports.com Founded 1983 President Penelope W. Kyle, Radford University Vice President Dr. Frank Bonner, Gardner-Webb University Secretary Dr. Anne Ponder, UNC Asheville Coordinator of Football Officials Doug Rhoads Full-Time Member Institutions (11): Campbell University, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, Gardner-Webb University, High Point University, Liberty University, Presbyterian College, Radford University, UNC Asheville, Virginia Military Institute, Winthrop University.

The Big South Conference took a big step in its young history in the Fall of 2002 when, for the first time in its 19-year history, the League crowned a football champion. Football had always been a long range goal of the Conference. In the early 1990s, football seemed on the horizon in the Big South, as Charleston Southern fielded its first team in 1991 and the Conference added Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, football never got off the ground in the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awarded its first automatic bid to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketball began to flourish. The idea was revived in 1997 when Elon joined the Big South. That gave the Conference three full-time members with football programs -- half the number needed to be recognized as a Conference by the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. 10, 1999, Coastal Carolina University announced it would add football by the Fall of 2003. The wheels were set in motion to establish a Conference home for the League’s football-playing members.

After attempts to form a joint football conference with the Atlantic Sun Conference failed, the Big South began Associate Members: Stony Brook Universi- recruiting more members to join its ty (football), Bucknell University (women’s fledgling football league. On May 23, golf), College of the Holy Cross (women’s 2001, the dream became a reality when the Big South’s Council of Chief Executive golf). Officers voted unanimously to add football Championship Sports (19): Baseball, Men’s as the Conference’s 18th championship sport. It became the first sport added since Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s 1997 when men’s and women’s indoor Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, track were incorporated as championship Football, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Men’s sports. Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Indoor and Shortly after the approval of football, the Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Indoor Big South’s recruiting efforts paid off, as the and Outdoor Track & Field, Volleyball, addition of Gardner-Webb University as an Women’s Lacrosse (2012-13) associate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that with the addition of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a four-team League could begin play later

that Fall, with Coastal Carolina coming into the fold in the 2003 season. However, scheduling conflicts could not be worked out, so the Fall of 2002 was designated as the kick-off to Big South Football. The Big South continued to look for additional members, with a goal of eventually having seven or eight playing members. On Dec. 10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state of Virginia -- Virginia Military Institute, announced it would join the Big South in all sports in 2003 and maintain the Conference’s football membership at five following Elon’s departure. In 2006, the League moved one step closer to etching its status as a viable football Conference. First, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Warren Koegel was appointed to the FCS Football Selection Committee, the Big South’s first-ever representative on a national football committee. On April 6, the Big South added Presbyterian College as its sixth football member. Presbyterian, now in the final year of its transition to Division I, officially joined the Big South in all sports in 2008. On May 26, 2006, the Big South announced that associate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008, solidifying the Big South’s football make-up for years to come. With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign. League champion Coastal Carolina became the first football member to advance to the postseason when the Chanticleers received an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Big South took another step closer to becoming eligible for an automatic berth when on March 20, 2007, the Conference announced the addition of Stony Brook University as an associate football member beginning in 2008. All the efforts came to fruition in the spring of 2008 when the NCAA announced the expansion of the FCS Playoffs from 16 to 20 teams beginning in

The Big South Conference 2010 and granting the Big South an automatic bid starting that year. The growth of Big South football has been exceptional since its inception just nine years ago. The Big South experienced its most successful campaign in 2006 with Coastal Carolina’s FCS playoff berth; two teams (Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern) ranked in the national Top 25 in the same week for the first time; four appearances on the ESPN family of networks; and the first-ever NFL Draft pick and first finalist for the Walter Payton Award in Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen. In 2007, Liberty won the first of its four consecutive Big South football championships in record-breaking fashion just two years after finishing 1-10 overall; Coastal’s Jerome Simpson (second round) and Gardner-Webb’s Brian Johnston (seventh round) were selected in the NFL Draft, and the League’s five football members combined to average a Big South-record 7,488 fans per game. The Big South produced another nationally-ranked program in 2008 in Liberty, as well as its fourth NFL draft pick in three years – Liberty’s Rashad Jennings (seventh round).

on the same day, when Gardner-Webb won in overtime at Akron and Liberty defeated Ball State on the road on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the season, Stony Brook extended its football membership through the 2015 campaign. Individually, Liberty’s Mike Brown led the nation in total offense while Stony Brook was the only FCS team to have two 1,000-yard rushers in Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Coastal Carolina emerged from a three-way tie for first-place with the Big South’s first-ever automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The Chanticleers also became the first Conference member to host a football playoff game as Coastal faced Western Illinois in the first round at Brooks Stadium. The Conference also had its largest television package to date, as a record eight League games were broadcast while Big South football members appeared on TV 12 of the 13 weeks of the season. With an automatic playoff berth officially awarded to its annual champion, the Big South is poised to continue its ascension as a national competitor in FCS football with an eye on advancing in the postseason and capturing the ultimate goal – a national championship.

The 2010 season saw the Big South make noise around the country early in the season with two wins over FBS opponents
