Coach Terrill on Chandler Wingreen: “Again, Chandler is a later recruit. I had an opportunity to see her play in Raleigh. She’s just a really good, strong athlete. We have a lot of size in this year’s class. I think Chandler’s probably about 5-8 and she’s a good ball-winner. I saw her play center back and outside back. It’s a position that we’re in a little bit of flux with right now and I think that Chandler’s going to be able to step in, hopefully, give us more depth, and make us more solid in the back for the 2012 year.”

2012 CSU Wome ns Socce r Se ason Preview Youth will reign supreme when the Charleston Southern University women’s soccer team takes the field for the start of the 2012 regular season. With a roster featuring just six upperclassmen and seven incoming freshmen, the Buccaneers will be counting on the senior leadership of captains Rebecca Hollstegge and Morgann Wood, as well as the play of preseason College Sports Madness Big South All-Conference players Stephanie Hand and Toni Lashley as CSU opens the 2012 regular season on Friday against The Citadel. Charleston Southern was picked sixth in the 2012 Preseason Big South Coaches Poll after last season’s 9-8-2 record in which the Buccaneers went 4-5-1 in conference play, earning the seventh-seed to the 2011 Big South Tournament. CSU took second-seed Winthrop to the wire in the quarterfinal round of the tournament, before falling in penalty kicks. The tournament berth was the Buccaneers 18th consecutive trip to the postseason, dating back to when the CSU women’s soccer program began in 1993. Goalkeepers Charleston Southern welcomes back redshirt sophomore Caitlin Cody to the goal this year as she returns boasting the lowest goals allowed average in the Big South Conference last season, allowing only five goals in 874 minutes of play, while making 54 saves. After splitting time with Amy Arroyo last season, Cody is ready to put her stamp on the squad between the posts and help CSU to clean sheets this season. Helping Cody and spelling her in goal this season will be fifth-year senior Melissa Adams who joins the soccer team in her final year of eligibility after a standout career on the CSU softball team where she starred in centerfield. Possessing good athleticism and great technical skills having a soccer background in high school, Adams will see action in the goal and is ready to step in when called upon. Defenders The youth movement begins on the backline for CSU as the five players listed on the roster as defenders have accumulated a total of six years’ experience at the collegiate level, led by returning 2011 Big South All-Freshman and All-Tournament team selection Stephanie Hand. One of the more aggressive and consistent players on the roster, Hand was a solid presence on defense and was one of just six players on the roster to start all 19 games last season. She also returns after earning CSU women’s soccer Defensive MVP honors at the 2011 annual banquet and was a 2012 College Sports Madness Preseason All-Big South Second Team selection. She will be joined on the backline this season by junior Chloe Urig, redshirt sophomore Tori Wright, sophomores Katelyn Faucette and Hali Singleton, as well as freshman Chandler Wingreen, while sophomore Kenandra DeSaussure is expected to split time at both forward and defender during the season. Urig, a 2010 First Team All-Conference defender as a freshman, struggled on the field as a sophomore, but has returned in great shape and is poised for a breakout campaign this season along the backline. Wright continues to make strides with the team in her third season with the squad after redshirting this past year, while Faucette and Singleton combined for 30 games and 18 starts on the pitch earning valuable experience in their freshman seasons.

Wingreen is also expected to battle for playing time early in the season, coming to the program from Tabb High School where she lined up at both center and outside back. She’s a good ball-winner in the air and will provide solid depth in the backline in the upcoming season.

Midfielders The middle of the field provides a blend of senior experience as well as freshman youth for the Buccaneers in the 2012 season as Hollstegge and junior captain Allison Lewis will be joined by sophomore Gina Thomas and a quintet of freshmen all vying to get on the field and see playing time in the season.

Hollstegge and Lewis return to captain the midfield and look to guide the freshmen along in the early season. Hollstegge returns after starting all 19 matches last season at the midfield and is known for her relentless

attitude and play on the field, serving as the engine that makes the team go on the pitch with her constant effort all over the field. Lewis, a 2011 Big South All-Academic Team selection, was another player who started all 19 matches last season for the Buccaneers and led the team in both shots and shots on goal, as the Greenville, S.C., peppered the net and challenged goalkeepers from the Big South, recording at least four shots on seven different occasions during the 2011 season.

Thomas is a crafty player whose skills translate more toward offense, where she scored three goals and contributed two assists last season, appearing in 18 matches on the pitch for the Buccaneers.

Joining them in battling for playing time in Charleston Southern’s rotation are freshmen Ashley Lowdermilk, Gina Cox, Jane Vardzel, Hannah Thomas and Rebecca Henry. Lowdermilk joins the team from Bradenton, Fla., where she played for the IMG Academy. Known for her versatility, she will see time all over the field and has the ability to contribute right away at the collegiate level. Cox adds the dimension of speed, as well as a powerful left foot to the program on the outside and will provide the CSU coaching staff with a variety of options of implementing her into the game plan this season. Vardzel is another talented player in the class, possessing great endurance and a lot of heart on the pitch and has a proven track of winning, having won several state championships at both the high school and club level. Thomas and Henry will provide size and defensive presence on the field as both stand between 5-10 and 6-0 and combine their height with speed and power as the duo both excelled in various track and field events at their respective high schools. Forwards Morgann Wood and 2011 leading goal scorer Toni Lashley headline the front-line for CSU this season, and returners Chelsea Phillips, Emma Faubert and DeSaussure and freshman Chelsea Frankeny look forward to finding the back of the net multiple times in the upcoming season for the Buccaneers. Wood’s clutch play and scoring ability helped the team in several tough contests last season as the senior scored the game-winning goal against Longwood, as well as assisted or scored in the Buccaneers’ victories over The Citadel, VMI and Gardner-Webb. Lashley, the leading goal scorer for CSU in 2011 with eight scores, returns earning 2012 College Sports Madness Preseason All-Big South Second Team honors and is expected to be marked everywhere she is on the field. Phillips returns after seeing action in four matches last year before redshirting, but scored her first collegiate goal on the only shot she placed on net last year against the College of Charleston. DeSaussure possesses great closing speed and the ability to create opportunities around the net for both herself and her teammates and will again provide offensive spark in her sophomore campaign. Faubert saw action in 17 matches last season as a freshman, recording five starts at forward and provides great athleticism and versatility along the front line and a good finishing touch around the net, placing 16 shots on goal in her first collegiate season. Joining them on the front line is newcomer Frankeny who comes to the program from Wilmington, N.C., and has a sparkling resume after scoring 90 career goals in high school, as well as 60 career assists, earning Regional Player of the Year honors in her senior season after a 26 goal, 15 assist campaign in 2011. The Schedule Charleston Southern’s schedule features contests against local rivals The Citadel and College of Charleston, as well as nonconference matches against USC Upstate, Mercer, Northern Iowa, Francis Marion and Georgia Southern, before the Buccaneers take on their annual Big South slate. Overall, the schedule features 12 home contests in the friendly confines of the CSU Soccer Field, including a pair of three game home stands and a stretch of four consecutive home contests to close out the season.

The Big South Confe re nce BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE QUICK FACTS Address: 7233 Pineville-Matthews Road, Suite 100 Charlotte, NC 28226 Phone: (704) 341-7990 Fax: (704) 341-7991 www.BigSouthSports.com Founded 1983 President Penelope W. Kyle, Radford University Vice President Dr. Frank Bonner, Gardner-Webb University Secretary Dr. Anne Ponder, UNC Asheville Coordinator of Football Officials Doug Rhoads Full-Time Member Institutions (11): Campbell University, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, Gardner-Webb University, High Point University, Liberty University, Presbyterian College, Radford University, UNC Asheville, Virginia Military Institute, Winthrop University.

The Big South Conference took a big step in its young history in the Fall of 2002 when, for the first time in its 19-year history, the League crowned a football champion. Football had always been a long range goal of the Conference. In the early 1990s, football seemed on the horizon in the Big South, as Charleston Southern fielded its first team in 1991 and the Conference added Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, football never got off the ground in the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awarded its first automatic bid to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketball began to flourish. The idea was revived in 1997 when Elon joined the Big South. That gave the Conference three full-time members with football programs -- half the number needed to be recognized as a Conference by the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. 10, 1999, Coastal Carolina University announced it would add football by the Fall of 2003. The wheels were set in motion to establish a Conference home for the League’s football-playing members.

After attempts to form a joint football conference with the Atlantic Sun Conference failed, the Big South began Associate Members: Stony Brook Universi- recruiting more members to join its ty (football), Bucknell University (women’s fledgling football league. On May 23, golf), College of the Holy Cross (women’s 2001, the dream became a reality when the Big South’s Council of Chief Executive golf). Officers voted unanimously to add football Championship Sports (19): Baseball, Men’s as the Conference’s 18th championship sport. It became the first sport added since Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s 1997 when men’s and women’s indoor Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, track were incorporated as championship Football, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Men’s sports. Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Indoor and Shortly after the approval of football, the Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Indoor Big South’s recruiting efforts paid off, as the and Outdoor Track & Field, Volleyball, addition of Gardner-Webb University as an Women’s Lacrosse (2012-13) associate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that with the addition of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a four-team League could begin play later

that Fall, with Coastal Carolina coming into the fold in the 2003 season. However, scheduling conflicts could not be worked out, so the Fall of 2002 was designated as the kick-off to Big South Football. The Big South continued to look for additional members, with a goal of eventually having seven or eight playing members. On Dec. 10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state of Virginia -- Virginia Military Institute, announced it would join the Big South in all sports in 2003 and maintain the Conference’s football membership at five following Elon’s departure. In 2006, the League moved one step closer to etching its status as a viable football Conference. First, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Warren Koegel was appointed to the FCS Football Selection Committee, the Big South’s first-ever representative on a national football committee. On April 6, the Big South added Presbyterian College as its sixth football member. Presbyterian, now in the final year of its transition to Division I, officially joined the Big South in all sports in 2008. On May 26, 2006, the Big South announced that associate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008, solidifying the Big South’s football make-up for years to come. With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign. League champion Coastal Carolina became the first football member to advance to the postseason when the Chanticleers received an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Big South took another step closer to becoming eligible for an automatic berth when on March 20, 2007, the Conference announced the addition of Stony Brook University as an associate football member beginning in 2008. All the efforts came to fruition in the spring of 2008 when the NCAA announced the expansion of the FCS Playoffs from 16 to 20 teams beginning in

The Big South Confe re nce 2010 and granting the Big South an automatic bid starting that year. The growth of Big South football has been exceptional since its inception just nine years ago. The Big South experienced its most successful campaign in 2006 with Coastal Carolina’s FCS playoff berth; two teams (Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern) ranked in the national Top 25 in the same week for the first time; four appearances on the ESPN family of networks; and the first-ever NFL Draft pick and first finalist for the Walter Payton Award in Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen. In 2007, Liberty won the first of its four consecutive Big South football championships in record-breaking fashion just two years after finishing 1-10 overall; Coastal’s Jerome Simpson (second round) and Gardner-Webb’s Brian Johnston (seventh round) were selected in the NFL Draft, and the League’s five football members combined to average a Big South-record 7,488 fans per game. The Big South produced another nationally-ranked program in 2008 in Liberty, as well as its fourth NFL draft pick in three years – Liberty’s Rashad Jennings (seventh round).

on the same day, when Gardner-Webb won in overtime at Akron and Liberty defeated Ball State on the road on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the season, Stony Brook extended its football membership through the 2015 campaign. Individually, Liberty’s Mike Brown led the nation in total offense while Stony Brook was the only FCS team to have two 1,000-yard rushers in Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Coastal Carolina emerged from a three-way tie for first-place with the Big South’s first-ever automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The Chanticleers also became the first Conference member to host a football playoff game as Coastal faced Western Illinois in the first round at Brooks Stadium. The Conference also had its largest television package to date, as a record eight League games were broadcast while Big South football members appeared on TV 12 of the 13 weeks of the season. With an automatic playoff berth officially awarded to its annual champion, the Big South is poised to continue its ascension as a national competitor in FCS football with an eye on advancing in the postseason and capturing the ultimate goal – a national championship.

The 2010 season saw the Big South make noise around the country early in the season with two wins over FBS opponents
