2012 Big South Championships
NINETY SIX, S.C. – CSU head men’s golf coach Michael Wilson was named the 2012 Big South Men’s Golf Coach of the Year by his peers and went on to lead his squad to a third-place finish despite a two-hour rain delay at the 2012 Big South Men’s Golf Tournament on Wednesday at the Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C. In addition, Ross Thomson joined David Denlinger and Jacobo Pastor in receiving conference honors. Thomson was named to the 2012 Big South All-Conference team for his finish at the event, joining Pastor on the team. Denlinger had previously been named to the 2012 AllAcademic team. The Bucs shot 285-279-295-859 to finish five strokes behind runner-up Coastal Carolina, who carded a team score of 285-273-296-854. CSU, who ‘s second round score of 279 tied for second-place in program history, finished five under par in the tournament after shooting seven over on the day. The wet conditions ended a streak of five consecutive rounds under par for the Buccaneers. The 2012 season marked the 15th time since 1985 the Bucs have finished third or higher at the event. No. 32 Liberty fired a record-setting 280-275-289-844 to claim their second consecutive Big South Men’s Golf title. The Flames’ Robert Karlsson took home top individual honors for the second time since 2010, carding a 69-68-69-206 to finish 10 under par. “I’m really proud of the way the guys competed today,” said Wilson. “Particularly in tough conditions. They played hard. It’s great to see both Ross and Jacobo honored again for their efforts, as well as David for his work both on and off the course. This is the best scoring year in CSU history, so I’m very pleased with the adjustments they’ve made and the work they’ve put in. I’m both honored and thankful to be named the Coach of the Year, because I know there are a lot of great coaches in our league.”
that aided in record-setting performances, Wednesday’s round was interrupted by bouts of rain throughout the day. The final groups were able to get few holes in before several on the front nine went under water, forcing tournament officials to halt play for nearly two hours. The round was finally resumed around 1 p.m., making for a late finish. Pastor was the Buccaneers’ top finisher at the event, finishing two strokes behind runner-up Daniel Kim by two strokes at six under. The three-time All-Big South honoree moved from eleventh place to third on the final day of play, shooting 72-69-69-210. He birdied four times across the final round to record 14 total in the tournament. Thomson added three birdies in the final round to shoot a 74, taking sixth place overall to earn his spot on the All-Conference team for the second time in his career. Thomson carded a 69-70-74-215 to finish three under par for the Buccaneers. Also in the top ten was David Denlinger, who birdied twice to finish with a 74 for two over on the day. Denlinger shot 72-69-74-215, moving from eleventh place into 10th during the final round. The 2012 season marked the second consecutive year he has finished the event under par, as he recorded eight birdies across three rounds. Will Pieper took 25th place in his second career Big South Conference tournament. Pieper struggled on the final day of action, shooting seven over despite three birdies on the round. He finished with a 54-hole total of 73-71-79-223 for seven over par. Making his first BSC tournament appearance was Choo Teck Ng, who finished 10 over par. Ng carded a threeround score of 72-76-78-226 to take 30th place.
The third and final round of event was not without dramatics. After two days of warm and sunny conditions

2011-12 Charleston Southern Men’s Golf
2011-12 Season Outlook Coming off of a runner-up finish at the 2010 Big South Men’s Golf Tournament, the CSU men’s golf team knew it would need an underclassman to step up and fill the void left by the departure of Kelvin Day. Lucky for the Bucs, more than one player would step into the talented Day’s golf shoes, as junior Jacobo Pastor and sophomore David Denlinger would highlight the season with strong individual finishes. CSU has six top-ten finishes prior to the conference tournament, while individual golfers finished inside the top-25 a total of 21 times. The Bucs had an individual finish in the top-10 nine times, with Pastor picking up CSU’s first individual title in five seasons. The team also claimed two wins over ranked opponents – in-state rival South Carolina and UNC Wilmington. The Bucs kicked off the 2010 fall season with a trip to Florence, S.C., where they took part in the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate. The team shot a respectable 298-290-299=887 to finish 23 over par and in 11th place. Pastor, who has been named to the All-Conference team in 2009-10, led the Bucs with a seventh place individual finish after shooting one under. Senior Jonathan Rustin was close behind, finishing two over and in a tie for 19th place. At the Sea Trail Men’s Intercollegiate in Sunset Beach, N.C., Charleston Southern played some of its best golf of the season. The Bucs shot a season-low 866, finishing two over as a team and in sixth place. Again, it was Pastor and Rustin who led the team with third and sixth place finishes, respectively. Rustin shot a season-low 213 to finish three under par at the event. Brandon CaddowYoung made his first appearance of the season, finishing eight over par. The next weekend, CSU headed to Daufuskie Island for the Third Annual Rees Jones intercollegiate where they took eighth place overall. A trip to Georgia for the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate was next on the schedule for the Bucs. Denlinger carded his best score of the fall season at the Savannah Quarters C.C., finishing two over par and in a tie for 23rd place. Denlinger
proved to be the Bucs’ most consistent player, carding a three-round score of 73-72-73-218. Charleston Southern wrapped up the fall season by hosting 14 teams at the Turtle Point Golf Course for the 2011 Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. No. 33 Indiana took top honors, with the Bucs taking sixth place ahead of ranked rival South Carolina. CSU shot a team score of 924 at the event to finish 10 over, with Pastor tying for 16th place and rookie Will Pieper just two strokes behind for 22nd place. CSU headed south in late January to kick off the spring season at the 2011 Jacksonville University Invitational. In a competitive field that featured Florida, Wake Forest and Clemson, the Bucs took 11th place with a team score of 923 for 59 over par. The Buccaneers then took on a new challenge soon after, competing at The Match Play at TPC Tampa Bay and finishing in a 2-2 tie in the tournament. Eventual champion Kennesaw State defeated the Bucs 3-2 in the first round, the CSU was able to rebound and pick-up wins against Loyola and Cleveland State. Pastor was undefeated in match play, going 3-1-0 on the weekend. The College of Charleston joined the Bucs in hosting the 2011 Charleston Shootout at the Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C. Pastor thrived on one of his home courses, coming from behind for the Bucs’ first individual title in five years. The Spaniard out-shot Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, who carded a first-round score of 64, to take the top honors at seven under par and earned his second Big South Golfer of the Week award. Fellow Buc Rustin shot 222 for six over to finish 22nd as the Bucs took fifth place at the event.
Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C. Rustin carded a season low score of 69 in the second round, but it was Pastor who’s tenth place finish led the team. The Bucs continued their hot play at the 23rd Annual Coca-Cola Invitational, where they took fourth place as a team with a combined score of 287-291-298=876. Pastor picked up his second title of the season, winning the event with a score of 210 for six under par and earning BSC Golfer of the Week honors for his efforts. Rustin also played in one of his best tournaments of the season, recording 11 birdies for a score 215 (one over par). In April, the Bucs made trip up to NinetySix, S.C., for the 2011 Big South Men’s Golf Tournament. Pastor and Denlinger earned Big South Honors at the pre-tournament banquet, with Pastor claiming a spot on the All-Conference team. Denlinger was honored for his work in the classroom with All-Academic accolades. The Pennsylvania native then took his talents to the links, shooting a career-best 215 to finish one under par and in fifth place. Denlinger birdied eight times overall, besting his previous personal record by three strokes. He earned spot on the All-Conference team for his efforts. The Bucs took seventh overall with a score of 898. In addition to Denlinger, two more Bucs finished in the top-25 with Pastor claiming 20th place and Rustin taking 23rd. After a solid season, the Bucs will lose only Rustin to graduation. All-conference honorees Pastor and Denlinger will return, while Pieper will boast a season of experience under his belt. With a wealth of young talent joining the Bucs in the fall, Charleston Southern should be primed for a strong season in 2011-12.
Big South foe Coastal Carolina hosted the competitive General Hackler Championship at TPC Myrtle Beach in mid-March. The Bucs found themselves in good company as seven NCAA championship teams attended the event; including defending national champion Augusta State. CSU finished ahead of all but one Big South opponent, taking 14th place overall with a score of 940. The Bucs picked up another top-ten finish with an impressive team effort at the

Coaching Staff MIKE WILSON Head Coach Charleston Southern ‘99 Third Season
Despite just three seasons at the helm of the CSU men’s golf team, Head Coach Mike Wilson boasts numerous honors and accolades in his tenure with the Buccaneers. He is the 2012 Big South Coach of the Year, as voted by his peers in the league, after guiding the Bucs to a top-100 ranking and a team title at the 24th Annual Coca Cola Invitational, as hosted by Wofford. Wilson’s players compete with the best of the best, as four Buccaneers have received individual bids to the NCAA tournament under his tutelage. Senior Jacobo Pastor and David Denlinger will compete at the Athens regional in 2012, marking the second consecutive season in which Pastor has been selected. Former Buc Kelvin Day also received a bid to NCAA Regionals in 2010. This season’s team rewrote the record books, with Pastor departing CSU with the program’s all-time best career average of 72.55. The squad’s score of 841 for 23 under par at the Coca Cola Invite is also a program record for 54-hole total. Pastor has twice earned tournament titles, winning the 2011 Charleston Shootout and 23rd Annual Coca Cola Invite. Six players have earned all-conference honors, while Denlinger has twice been acknowledged for his excellence in the class room as well. In a concerted effort to make the Charleston Southern golf team a nationally recognized program, Wilson has put together challenging schedules for his players over the last two seasons. The Bucs competed with some of the nations’ best golfers at challenging venues like TPC Sawgrass, Kiawah Island, Haig Point, TPC Myrtle Beach and TPC Tampa Bay. After a short stint as interim head coach, Wilson led the Buccaneers to a second place finish at the 2010 Big South Championship, marked improvement from their seventh place finish the year before. Led by Kelvin Day, who cracked the top-100 rankings during the season, the Bucs had four top-five finishes and eight top-ten finishes as team in Coach Wilson’s first season. They also boasted a win at the CSU Fall Invitational. Day concluded his CSU career with a second-place individual
6
finish at the Big South Championship, and earned BSC All-Conference honors. Prior to taking the reins of the men’s program, Wilson served as the inaugural head coach of the CSU women’s golf team and was an assistant to the men’s program. Boasting an 81-77-1 overall record, Wilson led the Lady Bucs to a second place finish at the 2009 Big South Championships and claimed a win at the Wendy’s Invitational. Olivia Jordan-Higgins paved the way for the Buccaneers, earning a share of the BSC Golfer of the Year honors as well as a spot on the All-Conference team. Teammate Madison Jeter earned BSC Academic AllConference honors. In 2007-08, Wilson led the Lady Bucs to the 2008 Big South Championship and onto the NCAA East Regional, where the Bucs finished 19th overall. Jordan-Higgins finished second overall at the Big South Championships and, along with teammate Katrin Rumpf, earned BSC AllConference honors. Jeter again earned BSC Academic All-Conference accolades as the Bucs shared the BSC Sportsmanship Award with Radford. After concluding his four-year playing career at CSU in 1999, Wilson joined the Buccaneers as an assistant coach from 1999-2000. He spent seven years as the Golf Assistant and Director of Instruction as the Seabrook Island Club on John’s Island, S.C., before joining the Top Golf Academy in Alexandria, Va., as a teaching professional in 2006. Wilson also spent time as a golf professional at nearby Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston, S.C. As a player, Wilson was the 2001 Santee Amateur champion before becoming a PGA professional in 2001. In 2010, he was the Low Amateur at the North Charleston Open.

Turtle Point rated 48th on Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Course List Jack Nicklaus once said that his number one goal in golf course design was to “make the player use his mind ahead of his muscles – to control his emotions sufficiently to really think through his options before drawing a club from the bag.” To that we say, welcome to Turtle Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, one of Jack’s early designs and steeped in the finest traditions of classic golf course architecture. Because of its traditional design, many of the better players visiting Kiawah Island Golf Resort would rather play Turtle Point than any of the other courses on the island. With narrow fairway corridors, small greens, strategically placed water hazards and plenty of out-of-bounds, Turtle Point calls for great accuracy and intelligent strategies. Players not driving the ball well will struggle for par. Since it is one of the longest courses on the island, proficiency with fairway woods and long irons is a must. So is the ability to scramble. Like many of Jack’s early courses, the greens on Turtle Point are small. So players need to be able to hit shots high if they want them to stop. The course calls for players to be able to shape their shots both left-to-right and right-to-left. They will need to be proficient with every club in the bag and won’t necessarily hit a driver on every hole. And true to Jack’s playing philosophy, Turtle Point plays best hitting to specific landing areas to get the best angles into the greens. Turtle Point experiences a lot of wind, as do all of the courses on Kiawah Island. The wind blows in different directions throughout the day. Trees protect many areas at Turtle Point so players won’t always sense how the wind might affect their shots. Local knowledge is very important in dealing with these phantom winds.
