2012 OUTLOOK

CSU Softball Looks to Take Next Step in 2012 Following back-to-back third place finishes, Charleston Southern Softball Head Coach Shane Winkler and his Buccaneers appear poised to make a run at Radford and Liberty atop the Big South standings this season. Senior shortstop Megan Lombard leads a group of 14 returners from a club which tied a program-record with 10 conference wins in 2011. The loss of just two seniors to graduation means experience is on the Bucs side, as they return eight starters – more than any other team in the Big South. Depth also figures to be a strength for CSU, with five freshmen and North Carolina State transfer Linzy Rother ready to contribute right off the bat. “Our goal this year is to continue playing on May 18,” Winkler said. “May 18 is the beginning of the NCAA Tournament. We’ve been looking forward to this year more than any other because of our experience, because of the type of depth that we have. Our goal is always to compete for a Big South Championship and now we have the team that we believe is as good as anyone in the conference to where our goal is beyond the Big South and toward continuing play in the NCAA Tournament on May 18.” IN THE CIRCLE Perhaps nowhere is CSU’s strength in numbers more evident than on the mound. Despite losing senior Kimberly Hobbs, the Bucs return workhorse Morgan Dowdy and expect Rother, as well as freshmen Jennifer Giles and Spencer Adkinson, to help her shoulder the load in 2012. Dowdy was excellent over a teamhigh 33 starts last year, and proved durable by yielding no earned runs over her final 19.1 innings on the bump. The 5-9 junior hurled 17 complete games en route to tallying a 2.88 ERA and 119 strikeouts, good for the fifth-highest single-season total in program history. Dowdy was at her best against Radford, authoring back-to-back shutouts in a doubleheader sweep as CSU became the only club to take a series from the regular season champions. Rother comes to the Bucs with an ACC pedigree from her time with the Wolfpack, and Giles and Adkinson are ready to toe the rubber as well. Winkler and Pitching Coach Meredith Felts are excited to have options on the hill over the course of the 54-game schedule. “I like it a lot because they complement each other so well,” Winkler said. Dowdy does a great job. She moves the ball around, she changes speeds well, she keeps the ball down in the zone where she’s not really susceptible to giving up the big inning. Then we have our freshmen that come in that throw with a little more velocity so they complement each other really well. Linzy Rother moves the ball around well and she’s got some experience in the ACC so they complement each other really well as a staff.” BEHIND THE PLATE Replacing the production of catcher Erin Kegley will be a challenge, but the Bucs have several players eager to pick up some of the slack behind the dish. Freshman Hannah Wagner is at the head of that list, along with junior backstop Melanie Stickney. Wagner enjoyed an illustrious high school career in Chico, California, capping it off with a North Section leading .733 slugging percentage as a senior on her way to being named 1st team all-league and garnering a nomination to the Northern Section All-Star game. Stickney, meanwhile, saw 23 starts as the number two catcher last season and smacked a pair of triples while displaying a solid throwing arm by picking off three runners and catching six more potential base stealers. Freshmen MK Parnell -- a local product from Mount Pleasant – and Kingstree, S.C. native Sheila Tomlinson also provide competition at the position. “Hannah Wagner has the ability to step in behind the plate as a catcher and at first base,” Winkler said. “She swings the bat extremely well. MK Parnell and

2

Sheila Tomlinson will also add some depth to the lineup.” INFIELD Experience abounds around the horn for CSU on the infield portion of the diamond, as the Bucs return four players who started a combined 212 games last season. Lombard headlines the group and enters the year having started all 176 games of her career to date. The shortstop enjoyed another banner campaign in 2011 as she earned Big South All-Conference 1st team honors by raking at a .330 clip to go along with eight home runs and 33 RBI – both team-highs. Lombard has a chance to leave her mark on the program even further as a senior, as she begins the season 5th in career batting average, 4th in hits, 2nd in doubles, 3rd in on-base percentage, second in total bases and runs, third in RBI, and T-1st in home runs. Joining Lombard on the left side of the infield is junior third baseman Jessica Brock, who provided considerable pop herself in 2011 when she totaled a .301 batting average, four homers, four doubles, and 32 RBI. Senior Kristin Kelleher is back at first base after making 52 starts there in 2010. The left-hander showed a discerning eye at the plate as she racked up a team-high 30 walks in 168 plate appearances. Junior Trea Steele figures to anchor second base, where she made 56 starts last season and batted .255 with five doubles, one three-bagger, two homers, 16 RBI and 18 runs scored. Wagner has the ability to play first base as well, while Tomlinson is capable at the hot corner in addition to the crouch behind the plate. OUTFIELD Slugging corner outfielders are a trademark of powerful offensive clubs, and the Bucs have just that in junior left fielder Jana Matthews. The 5-8 Boonville, N.C. native powered a CSU single-season record 12 long balls as a freshman in 2010, and backed it up with a 2011 that was good enough to merit her Big South All-Conference 2nd team honors. Matthews launched seven homers last year while ranking third on the team with 28 RBI, and enters her final two seasons only one round-tripper off the school-record. The Bucs have plenty of options in center field and right. Senior Melissa Adams and sophomore Ari Tedesco spent most of the time roaming center in 2010, while sophomore Hayes Holdsworth made double-digit starts in both spots. A pair of Holdsworth’s classmates will also be a part of the outfield mix along with juniors Jasmine Conley and Courtney Konyk. Lizzy Olmstead appeared in 44 games as a freshman and made six starts in center field, while Sbardella found herself in the field seven times but made her impact as the designated player by hitting .246 with nine doubles and 15 RBI. Wherever his position players are stationed in the field, Winkler is confident in their ability to get the job done in the batter’s box. “One through nine, we’re going to have the ability to swing the bats really well,” Winkler said. “We have about 14 players on our team that deserve an opportunity to start which is really nice because it’s going to be competitive all year long just to find yourself within the starting lineup. We have some players from the left side who can lay the ball down and use some speed when they’re in the lineup but one through nine, we’re going to have the ability to slug it a little bit and score some runs. It starts with Megan Lombard in that one-spot. She’s not your typical leadoff hitter that’s just going to put the ball in play and get on base but we use Megan to set the tone for our lineup – have the ability to hit an extra-base hit, have the ability to hit the ball out of the park – and we continue that on with the rest of the lineup. We’re excited with the power our lineup shows this year and the ability to not only get on base but get on base with extra-base hits to score a lot of runs and help our pitching staff out.”

Head Coach

Fourth Season Butler ‘04

SHANE WINKLER

Shane Winkler has been instrumental in restoring a winning tradition to the Buccaneer softball program as he enters his fourth season as head coach with an 81-94-1 record. CSU set numerous schol records in posting its first 30-win season since 1993 in 2010; and the 2011 club built off that success by matching a program best with 10 conference victories. Winkler’s 81 career wins already rank him third all-time among CSU softball coaches. Under the direction of Winkler, CSU has had 11 players earn a total of 13 Big South All-Conference Team honors. Additionally, in 2010, senior Caitlin Allen became the first CSU player to be named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In the past three seasons, CSU has garnered three conference player of the week awards and six pitcher of the week laurels. A total of nine individual single-season records and three career standards have been set during Winkler’s time at Charleston Southern. The Bucs have broken nine single-season team records in the past three seasons as well. The Buccaneers 25 conference wins under Winkler are the second-most league wins for CSU in any three-year span. Additionally, the Bucs’ 13 AllConference performers under his tutleage are the most ever for the program in a three-year stretch. In 2011, the Buccaneers posted a 25-33 record, (10-8 Big South) tying for third in the Conference. CSU set a single-season program record with 269 strikeouts, including a individual-best 148 K’s from senior Kimberly Hobbs. The Bucs closed out the regular season with a series victory over Big South Regular Season Champion Radford May 7-8, with Morgan Dowdy pitching back-to-back shutouts May 7. Junior shortstop Megan Lombard was named to the Big South All-Conference First Team, with Erin Kegley, Jessica Brock, Jana Matthews and Stephanie Sbardella earning second team nods. The 2010 team powered its way to a 30-28-1 (8-10 Big South) mark by slugging a program-record 45 home runs, while also setting standards in slugging percentage and total bases. The Bucs scored impressive wins over No. 15 Louisville and a shutout of the ACC’s Virginia Tech, and took 5-of-6 meetings from College of Charleston. Freshman Jana Matthews earned Big South All-Conference First Team, while teammates Megan Hall, Shayla Cullum and Kristin Kelleher collected second team all-conference. In his first season at CSU, Winkler led the Bucs to a 26-33 overall record (7-11 Big South). CSU opened 5-1 in league to match its best ever start en route to earning the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, the highest finish since 2001. The Bucs highlighted their Big South Tourney run with a win over No. 2 Winthrop, and went 2-2 overall to finish only one victory shy of a spot in the title game. Amy Trenkamp and Jamie Wellons were named

4

first team all-conference, while Melissa Adams and Megan Hall were tabbed to the second team, Winkler spent the summer of 2009 as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF). The Bandits boasted a leaguebest 27-12 record as he worked with a star-studded roster, complete with several Olympic performers, such as Jenny Finch (Arizona). Hired before the 2008-09 school year, Winkler came to Charleston Southern after three seasons as the assistant coach at Marshall University. While at Marshall, Winkler worked mainly with the offense and outfield while assisting with the overall team defense, recruiting, and all administrative duties within the program. During his three seasons the Thundering Herd had a combined record of 91-78. Marshall broke its home run record twice over that period, including 52 homers in 2008 to pair with a team batting average of .288. Winkler had the opportunity to coach four players that continued their softball careers in the NPF. Winkler’s first go-around in the NPF came during the summer of 2007, when he served as associate field manager with the Akron Racers. While there, he coached NCAA National Champions Alicia Hollowell (Arizona) and Caitlyn Benyi (UCLA) in addition to other top performers from the PAC 10, SEC, and ACC. The Racers finished the 2007 season in 2nd place in the NPF standings. Prior to Marshall, Winkler spent one season as the Co-Head Coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois and guided the program to its first winning season in 12 years by posting a 28-25 record in 2005. Winkler began coaching softball while in high school as a volunteer with the Kentland, Indiana, Summer Softball Association. He also spent one season as the hitting coach for South Newton High School in Kentland. A 2004 graduate of Butler University, Winkler competed for the Bulldog baseball team after also playing at Purdue University and Illinois Central College. Winkler played professionally with the expansion Florence Freedom of the Frontier League in 2004 and hooked on with the Amarillo Dillas of the United League in 2006 before being traded to the Washington Wild Things in Washington, Pennsylvania. Winkler earned his associate’s degree in general education from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., in 2002. He then received his bachelor of arts degree in communication studies from Butler University in 2004.

Assistant Coach

Second Season James Madison ‘10

MEREDITH FELTS Meredith Felts made an immediate impact in her first season as the Buccaneers’ pitching coach as CSU established a single-season program record with 269 strikeouts. The Bucs tandem of Morgan Dowdy and Kimberly Hobbs both earned Big South Pitcher of the Week in 2011, making CSU the only BSC team with two conference pitcher of the week honorees for the campaign. Under her tutelage, Hobbs struck out a programrecord 148 batters. CSU posted the second-lowest Conference-only ERA (2.01) of any Big South team in 2011. Felts arrived at CSU in 2010 after completing a Softball Coaching Internship at the University of North Carolina. While with the Tar Heels, she served as tournament director for multiple home tournaments. Felts’ main responsibilities also included scouting opponent’s pitching, evaluating recruits, game day operations, practice planning and simulating opposing pitchers in practice. Prior to UNC, Felts was an assistant coach for the Mannheim (Germany) Tornados Juniors in 2009, where she planned and implemented team practices and assisted in game day operations. Felts also taught skill development with an emphasis on pitching. Felts enjoyed an accomplished playing career as a four-year starting

pitcher for the James Madison Dukes, amassing nearly every major singleseason and career pitching record at JMU. Felts is the school’s all-time leader in wins (61), ERA (1.62), games started (85), complete games (52), strikeouts (581) and shutouts (20). She also holds single-season records in strikeouts (184), wins (18), complete games (19) and shutouts (8). Felts earned a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team (2006) and was a three-time member of the CAA All-Conference Team (2007-2009), while also taking home CAA Pitcher of the Week on eight occasions (2006-2009). She also gained national recognition as a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association All Mid-Atlantic Team (2008) and a two-time member of the VA Sports Information Directors’ Association All-State Team (2008-09). Felts picked up a pair of accolades in 2009, as she was named the VA Sports Information Directors’ Association University Pitcher of the Year and earned the CAA Softball Tournament Oustanding Player Award. Felts has been active in softball camps at JMU and UNC in a variety of capacities over the past several years. She graduated from James Madison University in May of 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and a minor in General Business.

INSIDE THE CLUBHOUSE WITH COACH WINKLER On excitement for 2012 season: This is the year that we’ve been looking forward to. We finally have experience. We have a lot of kids that our staff has brought in, recruit-wise, and most of them have gained a lot of experience and mixing that in with a couple that we have this year that will see some significant time, this is the year that we’ve really been looking forward to. On CSU’s 3rd Place Standing in Big South Preseason Poll: Big South play is going to be very competitive this year. You don’t need much extra motivation going into each series but one motivating factor we do have from the preseason poll is there was a team that picked us to finish seventh and there was a team that picked us to finish sixth. We feel based on what we did last year and what we accomplished that we’ve earned a little more than that so going into each Big South series we get to think ‘that’s the team that picked us 7th’ and we have something to prove so we get to use the preseason poll as somewhat of a motivating factor this year.

On playing in the Long Beach State Invitational: We finally get to go out there and it’s nice for our California kids to get to play close to home but again, the biggest thing is we want to be a program that can compete with anyone in the nation and in order to do that you have to schedule trips like that where you’re going out west, you’re playing in different parts of the country. We play UCLA which won the national championship a couple of years ago so we’re playing some big time programs out there and trying to compete nationally. On roster with players from 7 different states, including 5 from California and another from Washington We want to recruit nationally so we want to show our recruits that you’re not just coming here to play in a smaller conference. We’re trying to compete for Big South Championships, but also with other programs nationally. We sell that to our recruits very hard and they’ve bought into it. That’s why we’ve been able to get kids from the west coast and from down in Florida. We’ve gotten some kids that can play at a very high level.

BIG SOUTH

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of Developing Leaders Through Athletics. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. He has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002 and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highestever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The Conference’s tagline, Developing Leaders Through Athletics was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s onfield accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

2011 IN REVIEW

Bucs Gain Experience and Build Toward Promising Future in 2011 A season that started with high expectations ended with the 2011 CSU Buccaneers tying the program record for most Conference victories while posting numerous strong performances. The Buccaneers went 25-33 overall and finished in a tie for third place for the second year in a row with a 10-8 Conference mark. The 2011 edition of CSU softball built off of the momentum of the team’s first 30-win season since 1993, becoming the first Buccaneer softball team with 10 Big South victories since 1992. Third-year Head Coach Shane Winkler said, “2011 was another step forward for the program. We finished third in the conference again, but it was improvement, which was what we were looking for. We didn’t reach the expectations and the goals that we were hoping for, because we set those extremely high.” CSU played its best softball during the final weekend of the regular season, winning a threegame series against Big South Regular Season Champion Radford May 7-8. The Buccaneers posted back-to-back 3-0 shutouts over the Highlanders May 7, with Morgan Dowdy penning 14 shutout innings. Charleston Southern is the first Big South team to shut out Radford since the 2008 season. “Radford only had two losses on the season in conference going in, and we played extremely well,” Winkler said. “That weekend not only did a lot for our confidence this season, but I think it’s going to change what our goals and expectations are the rest of the way.” Five Buccaneers were honored on the All-Big South Team this season, tying for the most All-Conference players in a single season in program history. Junior shortstop Megan Lombard was named Big South All-Conference First Team at shortstop. Senior catcher Erin Kegley earned second-team All-Conference, and was also tabbed to the All-Academic Team. Sophomores Jana Matthews (OF) and Jessica Brock (3B), along with freshman DP Stephanie Sbardella, drew mention on the second team as well. The Buccaneers opened the season at the Palmetto State Showdown in Columbia, where the team went 2-2. Kegley and Matthews provided highlights during the season-opening Palmetto State Showdown in Columbia by clubbing back-to-back homers in an 11-3 win over Winthrop. Morgan Dowdy then pitched a three-hit shutout and Hayes Holdsworth homered in her first career at-bat Feb. 13 vs. Furman. Dowdy was named Big South Pitcher of the Week Feb. 14 and May 9, while senior Kimberly Hobbs earned pitcher of the week honors April 18. CSU was the only team with two Big South Pitcher of the Week honorees. Trea Steele’s walk-off single enabled CSU to open the home schedule by downing ACC opponent Virginia Tech, 10-9, in nine innings Feb. 18. The Bucs also added a victory over Georgetown of the Big East. “Getting a couple wins over big-time programs in big conferences was a highlight this season,” Winkler said. The Bucs’ 11-run rally during the first inning against MEAC Champion Bethune-Cookman Feb. 26 was highlighted on the ESPN.com College Sports Blog alongside national powers Tennessee, Florida and Stanford. Charleston Southern hosted its first StrikeOut Cancer game this season, April 20 vs. College of Charleston raising support and awareness for breast cancer survivors. The Bucs wore pink jerseys, and Sharon Adams, mother of junior outfielder Melissa Adams and a cancer survivor, threw out a special first pitch.

26

“The StrikeOut Cancer game was definitely a big highlight of the year, to do that for the first time here. We have a player, Melissa Adams, whose mother is going through breast cancer, and has battled through that and has beat that. That was nice, to bring her out to throw the first pitch,” Winkler said. When the page turned to the Conference season, the Buccaneers pitching and defense improved to become among the best in the Big South. CSU led the League with a .978 fielding percentage in Conference games, and finished second with a 2.01 Big South ERA. An errorless weekend helped the Bucs take a 2-1 series over Radford. “Pitching and defense put us in a position to win every game throughout conference,” said Winkler. “That’s the biggest key, is our pitching and defense stepped up a great deal; we got great outings all conference season long from Kimberly Hobbs and Morgan Dowdy. They did a great job, and our defense played tremendous throughout the conference season.” The Buccaneers faced Presbyterian to open Big South play, and went 1-2 against the Blue Hose. CSU swept a doubleheader from rival Coastal Carolina April 4, which included a run-rule, 9-1, victory and a 6-2 win over the Chanticleers. The Bucs won all four meetings from Winthrop this season, including a 2-1, eight-inning victory followed by a 10-1 run-rule triumph April 18. In the conference tournament, CSU posted a 1-2 record which included a 2-1 win over Presbyterian College as the Bucs eliminated the Blue Hose for the second year in a row. CSU continued its power-hitting prowess, slugging 31 home runs and 103 extra-base hits total. The Bucs have had 100 or more extra-base hits in each of the last four seasons. The Bucs ability to drive the ball to the gaps is a strength that has been developed over the past few seasons, says Winkler. Lombard continued to set new benchmarks last season, as she tied her own single-season program record with 191 at bats. Additionally, she hit her programrecord-tying 20th career home run May 7 vs. Radford. The Buccaneer pitching staff showed vast improvements, setting the single-season CSU standard with 269 strikeouts. Kimberly Hobbs struck out a program-record 148 batters this season, including 11 against PC April 1, while Dowdy posted 119 strikeouts. “Morgan and Kimberly both stepped up a great deal. We lost Sondra Vetter, who was a senior, before the season started with a shoulder injury, which really hurt us, and we fought through that adversity. Those two led us the entire way and did a tremendous job, so I’m proud of the way that they were able to step up,” Winkler said. Last year’s club featured only two seniors with a majority of the starters holding underclassmen status, so the combination of youth and experience promises that 2012 will be another step in the quest for a championship. “We took a step forward this year, and we have almost everyone returning. We gained a great deal of experience, which is key this year. So we bring back experience and talent, and mix that in with our best recruiting class that we’ve ever had, and we feel we have the team to finally . . . take that step forward and be the top team in the Big South and continue playing on through the NCAA tournament.”
