MEDIA POLICIES Credentials

Press row and sideline credentials will be given to accredited working media only. All requests must be mailed or faxed to the Charleston Southern Office of Sports Information no later than two days before the game. Requests from media covering visiting schools can be made through that school’s sports information director. Requests for photographer passes should be made no later than the day before the game.

Media Services

All working media will be supplied with game notes (including up-to-date statistics), media guides of both teams (whenever possible), and any other information needed in their coverage of the game. A statistics summary, including team and individual stats, will be available at halftime; play-byplay is available by request. Following the game, a complete statistical book (including team and individual statistics and play-by-play) will be made available for media by the sports information staff. Fax service is available upon request from the sports information office. Two telephone lines will be available for use following the game in the sports information office. Each radio station broadcasting the game will have two reserved seats on press row and one telephone line. Please refer to the game contract if a fee is to be paid to CSU for use of the phone lines. Extra phone and communication lines are the responsibility of the broadcast entity.

Interviews

Postgame: Immediately following the game there will be a 10-minute cooling off period during which Coach Goodenough will speak to the team. Goodenough and the players will then be available to conduct interviews for both print and electronic media on the court. All CSU players will be available for interviews on the court immediately following the end of the 10-minute cooling off period. If possible, please inform a member of the sports information staff of the players you wish to interview after the game to expedite this process. Interviews with visiting coaches and players will be arranged by the visiting sports information director. Practice Days: Coach Goodenough will be available to speak to the media from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Players will also be available to speak to the media on weekdays except game days, but priority will be given to their class and practice schedule. All interviews with players must be arranged by the sports information office. At no time will a player’s home phone number be given to the media. Daily practices are open to the media only by request. Please call the sports information office to verify practice time and player availability. Goodenough will be available to speak to the media after practice. The head coach does reserve the right to close certain practice sessions.

2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK

Hopes have never been higher for the Charleston Southern women’s basketball program, coming off the team’s first postseason appearance and returning four starters. CSU finished with a 17-14 record last year, one win shy of tying the school record, while posting the most wins in Big South play (9-7) in program history. The season was the third winningest season (overall and in Big South play) in school history, and was capped off with the opportunity to host Appalachian State in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational.

Guard play has been dominant for CSU under Head Coach Julie Goodenough, who is now in her fifth season with the Bucs. Led by seniors Kelsey Wasmer and Katie Tull, both of whom earned allconference honors last year, Charleston Southern knocked down 263 three pointers last year, more than double made by their opponents (130). The Buccaneers averaged 8.48 threes per game to lead the Big South, while Gardner-Webb came in second at 5.12. Tull hit a school record 100 threes on the season, while Wasmer added 67, and posted one of the best scoring performances in school history, dropping 33 points against Radford. It ties for the fifth-highest single game total in program history. Senior Abby Poole will also return for her senior season, having played in six games during her junior season. Throw in Helen Terry, who posted 36 threes made and averaged 8.2 points per game in her freshman season and CSU returns 77 percent of their made threes in just three players. Shay Jones also factors into the game plan at the point guard spot, averaging 14.0 minutes per game last year. And the Bucs will regain the services of Kiki Rutledge, who redshirted last season after leading CSU in assists (4.5 apg) in her freshman season (2008-09). Her return makes the depth at the point guard position as deep as it’s been in recent memory. Lakeitha Alson, Lydia Johnson and Danielle Gibson all return as forwards, combining to average 7.7 points per game last season and giving CSU a

presence inside defensively with 10 blocks and numerous altered shots. Alston had five double-figure scoring games early in the season, while Johnson performed well with eight points and five rebounds against UT San Antonio. Gibson’s break out game came later in the season as she score eight points and pulled down seven rebounds against Presbyterian College on March 5. With 72 percent of the offense returning for the 2010-11 season, CSU may not be forced to depend heavily on the freshmen. Should the opportunity arise though, Goodenough’s signing class will no doubt be up to the challenge. Kirklin Kirkpatrick averaged 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists per game in her senior season at Tuscola High School, earning co-conference player of the year honors. Anicia Dotson will add to the front court, standing 5-11 and coming from Daniel High School, where she led her team to the 2010 AAA Upper State Championship. She was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and was twice named the region’s player of the year. Also playing this season is Erin Bratcher, who was also a McDonald’s All-American nominee, averaging 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game at Ravenscroft High School in North Carolina and Margaret Spaulding, who averaged 10 points and eight rebounds per game at Hopewell High School. Another challenging schedule awaits Charleston Southern, facing Clemson and South Carolina in the early part of the season, while also traveling to the World Vision Classic, hosted by Texas Tech. The Buccaneers will have 13 regular-season home games, as well as an exhibition against Montreat on November 6. CSU will host crosstown rival College of Charleston as part of a double-header with the men’s basketball team on New Year’s Eve. Conference play begins on January 3, 2011, as the team travels to Gardner-Webb, while they open the home part of Big South Play on January 15 with Presbyterian College.

HEAD COACH Head Coach Julie Goodenough Fifth Season at CSU All-Time Record: 258-189 CSU Record: 47-74 Julie Goodenough begins her fifth season at the helm of the CSU women’s basketball program after leading the Buccaneers to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, her best season at Charleston Southern. The 200910 squad and their 8.5 three’s made per game tied for 17th best in NCAA history (8.5). Last year’s team also finished tied for third in the conference. This was also the best finish in school history with a Big South Conference of at least nine teams. Goodenough went 10-20 in her first year and 8-22 in 2007-08, and 12-18 in 2008-09. Goodenough joined the CSU family for the 2006-07 campaign. She has continued building a foundation for a strong women’s basketball program at Charleston Southern University. Since beginning her tenure at CSU, Goodenough has coached eight players who have been named to All-Conference teams. Keena Whicker was named a member of the Big South All-Conference Second Team during coach Goodenough’s first season. In 2007-08, Pam Tolbert earned All-Conference First Team honors; Crystal Robinson was named to the All-Freshman Team. Last season, Kelsey Wasmer, Katie Tull and Helen Terry were named to the Big South All-Conference team. Ali Schwagmeyer and Kiki Rutledge were also named to the All-Freshman team in 2009-10. Last year was another banner year for Charleston Southern. The Bucs made their first ever post season tournament appearance by competing in the WBI. The Buccaneers were led this past season by explosive scorers Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer. Tull averaged 14.5 points per game and Wasmer dropped 13.2 ppg as the duo finished 3-4 in the league, respectively. Wasmer stepped up during conference play, leading the league with 15.9 points per game. The dynamic duo of Tull and Wasmer both earned Second-Team AllConference honors, and they were the first guard duo in CSU history to garner postseason laurels. Wasmer was also named to the All-Academic Team. Goodenough encourages her

players to display good sportsmanship and a hard work ethic. Her teams have gained respect from opposing coaches in the conference as they have been awarded the coach-voted “Sportsmanship Award” for two of the last three seasons. The CSU women’s basketball program have also boasted a 100% graduation rate in the past four seasons for players who have finished their eligibility at CSU Prior to CSU, Goodenough posted a three-year stint at Oklahoma State University as the head women’s basketball coach. Goodenough also spent nine years as the head women’s basketball coach and four years as the Senior Women’s Administrator at HardinSimmons University prior to her stint at OSU. HSU, like CSU, is a Southern Baptist University. She was inducted into the HSU Athletics Hall of Fame in fall 2007. While at Hardin-Simmons, Goodenough coached three All-Americans, 34 All-Conference selections and 46 Academic All-Conference selections. She left the program as the winningest coach in school history, reaching 150 career wins in less than 200 career games. HardinSimmons captured seven conference championships and made six consecutive postseason appearances under Goodenough, who posted a 188-54 record in her nine seasons. At Oklahoma State, Goodenough recruited and coached the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and posted the 19th best recruiting class in the country in her first full season. Five of the top 10 largest home crowds in school history occurred during Goodenough’s tenure, including the largest crowd to ever watch a home women’s basketball contest. As a player, Goodenough was a two-year captain and all-conference selection at Western Texas College before transferring to the University of Texas at Arlington. At UTA, Goodenough was a two-year captain, an all-conference selection and left as the 13th-leading scorer in program history. Goodenough received her bachelor of arts degree from UTA and received her master’s degree from Texas Tech University in 1993. She also coached at UTA and Lubbock Christian University prior to becoming the head coach at Hardin-Simmons in 1993. She was recently given another honor as earlier this year the FCA Big Country All-Star Game, annually played in Abilene, Tex., named its most valuable player award the Julie Goodenough MVP Award. She is also serving on the State Farm All-American Commission for next two years. Goodenough and her husband, Rob, the principal at River Oaks Middle School, have two daughters, Bailey (14) and Macy (12). The Goodenoughs (pictured below) reside in Summerville, S.C.

As soon as my college playing career was ended, I knew I wanted to stay in college basketball at the college level as a coach. -Phrases you say most often during practice... “All makes” ..... “Low hips, High Hands”.... “Its not about easy”...... “Game Like” -What is your favorite drill in practice... I actually have several, but my top favorites are olympic shooting drill, perfection drill, toughness drill and 5 sec cover out. -What is the best thing about being a coach at CSU? My players and staff are awesome people to work for and with everyday! I love the Christian atmosphere on the CSU campus. -When you played what was the greatest strength of your game? My nickname wasn’t “Jumpshot Julie” for nothing! -What are your best coaching characteristics? Teaching and motivating -Who is your favorite basketball team outside of Charleston Southern? DuBose Middle School and Ashley Ridge High School -What is the most exciting part of gameday? That is tough to answer because the whole day, from the moment I wake up until the postgame talk, just absolutely rocks! I really prepare and look forward to pregame, but watching the players transfer what we work on in practice to the game is so awesome. Our team is so exciting to watch when they play hard and play as a team. -What attracted you to Charleston Southern? CSU is a Division I, Southern Baptist university by the beach, and I love the beach! -Who was your biggest influence growing up? My mom and dad -Which coach do you model yourself after? Team atmosphere (No one is more important!) -When you played what was the greatest strength of your game? My ability to score. -What is your favorite part about coaching? Teaching the game I love that has gotten me where I am today -What is the most important thing you want to see from the team this season? To see all of them push past what they think is possible -What is your best coaching characteristic? Passion for the game -What is your favorite basketball team outside of Charleston Southern? My alma mater, Texas Tech -My favorite thing about Charleston is... Beaches and the Food -Who was your biggest influence growing up? My Mother -Which coach do you model yourself after? In his first year as at CSU, Newland will serve as the recruiting coordinator and will specifically work with the post players. He will also be responsible for overseeing community service, scouting and assisting with marketing and promotions. Newland comes to Charleston Southern after spending four years at the University of Missouri and four years as a student assistant at Texas Tech University. He spent the last two years as an assistant coach with the Tigers, and before that served as the graduate assistant at Missouri. During his time as an assistant coach, Newland was responsible for post-player development, while assisting with marketing, strength and conditioning and recruiting. Newland also oversaw the male practice squad and helped scout opponents. “I am extremely excited for Jarod to join our staff and assist us in what we anticipate to be another historic season for Charleston Southern basketball,” coach Goodenough said. “Jarod learned about coaching from his mother, head coach at Mesquite High School in Texas and received an invaluable education about Division I women’s basketball while working for four seasons for the legendary Marsha Sharp at Texas Tech. Recruiting and coaching in the Big 12 at Missouri has provided Jarod the opportunity to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be amazing assets for our program.” Newland earned a master of education degree in health, education and promotion in 2008 from the University of Missouri. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in exercise and sport sciences in 2006 from Texas Tech University. Newland married his wife, Jessica, in June and they live in Summerville.”

ASSISTANT COACHES Leslie Cook

Second Season

Meet Coach Cook -When did you know you wanted to become a coach? While I was playing basketball in college -Phrases you say most often during practice... “Relocate!!!” -If you weren’t a coach, what would be your profession? Something in finance or accounting -What is your favorite drill in practice... Any Shooting drill -What is the best thing about being a coach at CSU? Team atmosphere (No one is more important!) -When you played what was the greatest strength of your game? 3 point shooting Being surrounded everyday by a great group of players & coaches -What is your favorite part about coaching? Being surrounded everyday by a great group of players & coaches -What is the most important thing you want to see from the team this season? For our girls to perform up to their potential. If we do that, the possibilities are endless. -What is your best coaching characteristic? My ability to read defenses and from that create shot opportunities. -What attracted you to Charleston Southern? The potential of the women’s basketball program here at CSU and the opportunity to coach in the Big South Conference. I loved being a part of the conference as a player and was excited for the chance to be a part of the conference as a coach. -My favorite thing about Charleston is... how close it is to the beach. -Who was your biggest influence growing up? My high school basketball coach -Which coach do you model yourself after? Mike Krzyzewski -What’s the most important attribute you look for when you look at recruits? Work ethic -On my off days I... relax and take it easy, which usually is watching TV or movies or going shopping

Leslie Cook enters her second season as an assistant coach for Charleston Southern. Coach Cook joined the CSU coaching staff after helping coach the girl’s basketball team at High Point Central High School in High Point, N.C. She played collegiately at fellow Big South Conference member High Point University as a transfer from 2005-07. In 2007, Cook earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from High Point. Cook served as team captain for the Lady Panthers, while being named Big South All-Conference Second Team in 2007 and amassing more than 1,000 career points. Her team won the regular season conference championship during her senior season at High Point. “Coach Cook is revered as one of the top three-point shooters to ever play in the Big South Conference,” coach Goodenough said. “Her own storied career at the D-I level affords her the experience and knowledge to educate and coach our perimeter players to become consistent and confident scorers.” Cook earned numerous academic awards, including four Big South awards in 2006 and ’07, along with being named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American Teams in 2006 and ’07. Cook also received the prestigious George A. Christenberry Award for academic excellence in 2007, an award presented by the Big South Conference to one male and one female athlete who attain the highest GPA in the conference for their graduating season. Cook started her collegiate career at Atlantic 10 Conference member University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she twice broke the program’s single-season record for made three-pointers. Cook’s coaching responsibilities will focus mostly on guard development. In addition to her coaching duties, Coach Cook will serve as academic liaison and travel coordinator.

ASSISTANT COACHES Sloan Calvert Second Season

Meet Coach Calvert -When did you know you wanted to become a coach? Senior year of college, I started playing on the scout team, and I knew I wanted to be a coach -Phrases you say most often during practice... “BALL PRESSURE!!!!” -If you weren’t a coach, what would be your profession? Something in the medical field, physical therapy or something with Genetics -What is your favorite drill in practice... 1 on 1 full court -What is the best thing about being a coach at CSU? The players that I coach and the staff that I coach with -When you played, what was the greatest strength of your game? Physical strength and effort... oh yeah, and I could shoot a little bit too -What is your favorite part about coaching? The relationships with the team and competing. -What is the most important thing you want to see from the team this season? I want to see every player play hard all the time. -Who is your favorite basketball team outside of Charleston Southern? Clemson -My favorite thing about Charleston is... great food, and good, warm weather. -Who was your biggest influence growing up? My mom and dad. They are my best friends. -What’s the most important attribute you look for when you look at recruits? Character on and off the court -Students love Charleston Southern because... the great coaches of course! -Describe your coaching style in three words or less... Coach Sloan Calvert is in his second season as an assistant at Charleston Southern University. Calvert joins the Buccaneers after three seasons with the Clemson University women’s basketball program. He served as a graduate assistant from 2007-09, working with video editing and game film exchange. He also oversaw the team’s student managers. “Coach Calvert adds much diversity to our staff, bringing a male’s perspective to the program,” coach Goodenough said. “From his work experience at Clemson with Coach Christi McKinney and her staff, he learned to value and demand work ethic and intensity on the court. Off the court, his expertise with computers and audio visual services is a tremendous aid for scouting and video exchange needs.” Before attending Clemson, Calvert played basketball and football at Emerald High School in Greenwood, S.C. He graduated from Clemson in 2007 with a bachelor of science degree in genetics -and earned a master’s degree in human resources development in August 2009. Calvert’s main responsibility is working with point guards. His other duties include coordinating video exchange, helping with recruiting and scouting, and supervising the Buccaneer scout team.

ADMINISTRATION Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr., President

Named president of Charleston Southern University in 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr. is also a professor of management and education. His teaching and professional interests include educational leadership, institutional assessment, higher education finance, organizational change, and student personnel services. Dr. Hunter is a frequent keynote speaker and seminar leader on topics related to higher education, and he continues to teach in the MBA program in CSU’s School of Business. This fall marks Dr. Hunter’s 26th year as president of the university, and the 46th anniversary of CSU’s founding. During his tenure at CSU, enrollment has increased from 1,600 students to more than 3,000. Academic programs have expanded to include graduate degrees in education, business administration, criminal justice and nursing. The university now offers 38 undergraduate and four graduate programs. Church ministry-related degrees have also grown to include youth ministry and church music. A sports medicine/athletic training program has also been added under Hunter’s administration, providing students with academic and clinical preparation for certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Beginning in 2007-08, the Hunter Cup is given annually to the top athlete who also stands out academically and spiritually.

Dr. Rick Brewer, Vice President For Planning and Student Affairs and Athletics

Dr. Rick Brewer is a seasoned Christian leader with the vision and leadership skills essential for serving effectively in the 21st century Christian higher education community. Throughout Brewer’s 23-year tenure at CSU, he has played a vital role in shaping the university’s vision for a Christian campus environment and spearheading and executing countless initiatives that underscore what Christian universities are about. He has consistently and enthusiastically taken on positions of increasing responsibility and has brought to each his unique blend of commitment, administrative skills, and Christ-centered focus. Brewer is highly respected as an effective higher education administrator who has the ability to effect change while maintaining support and trust. Indeed, Brewer is a student-centered strategic thinker and transformational change-agent. Brewer holds BS and MBA degrees from CSU and a PhD in higher educational leadership from the University of South Carolina. In his role as vice president for student affairs and planning and athletics, Brewer provides leadership for CSU’s student life, Christian ministries, denominational relations and athletics. His family has a solid commitment to Christian higher education - Dr. Brewer’s wife, Cathy, and two sons Jason and Jonathan, are also alums of CSU. The Brewers are members of Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, S.C., where he previously served as a deacon.

Hank Small, Director of Athletics

Henry “Hank” Small is in his 10th full year as CSU’s athletic director. Small took over the position of head of CSU athletics following the tenure of interim athletic director Rick Brewer, who served as both athletics director and the dean of students. Small came to CSU in summer 2001 following a four-year stint as assistant football coach at Wake Forest University. Small has more than 30 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including stints at Rutgers, Florida State, Lehigh, Princeton, and Brown. Small also spent one year in the personnel office of the New England Patriots. As the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Small guided the Demon Deacons offense to record-setting heights as a number of school records fell during his tenure. In his most recent head coaching experience, Small was able to guide Lehigh to a 47-40-1 record and led them to become one of the most productive offenses in the nation.

Small is a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College and has a master of science degree from Rutgers University. Small and his wife, Pamela, currently reside in Goose Creek. Daughter Lacy and middle son Jonathan both graduated from CSU.

ATHLETIC TRAINING/MEDIA RELATIONS BRAD DRAKE - HEAD TRAINER Brad Drake joined the CSU athletic training staff in 2007 and was promoted to head athletic trainer in July, 2010. He is responsible for the healthcare needs of the football team and oversees the care of all other sports at Charleston Southern. Brad is originally from Greenville, S.C., and is a 1996 graduate of Presbyterian College. In 1998 he earned a master of arts degree in health and Exercise Science from Furman University. After receiving his master’s, Brad completed a summer internship with the Carolina Panthers. Most recently, Brad was the head athletic trainer at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C. Brad also provided athletic training coverage for the North team during the 2006 North/South All Star Football game in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Brad is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the South Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association. He serves as the Chair of the Program Committee for the SCATA Annual Symposium and also serves on the CSU Safety Committee. Married in May, 2010, to the former Catherine Cheek, in his free time Brad enjoys playing golf, watching movies and visiting with friends and family.

TUESDAY PATTERSON - ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER Tuesday Patterson, a former graduate student at CSU, joined the staff in 2009 as an assistant athletic trainer. She works in conjunction with Trident Health Systems through Trident Sports Medicine. Her primary sport responsibilities include medical coverage of the CSU volleyball and women’s basketball teams. Tuesday comes to CSU from Sunset, South Carolina. She completed her bachelor of science degree in athletic training at Erskine College and her masters degree in business administration at Charleston Southern. She holds memberships in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association and South Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association.

SAMANTHA BOUDREAU - ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER The 2010-11 school year marks Samantha Boudreau’s second season as an assistant athletic trainer at Charleston Southern. Boudreau is the primary athletic trainer for the CSU baseball team. She is also an athletic training instructor. Prior to her time at CSU, Boudreau spent one season as an assistant athletic trainer at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and for two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Kentucky. Boudreau has twice presented research projects to her athletic training colleagues. As a CSU student, Boudreau presented on the topic of “Implications of Long Thoracic Nerve Injuries” at the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers annual symposium in Virginia. As a graduate student, she presented a research project entitled “Hip Muscular Activation During Functional Exercises” at the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn. The project is also published in the Journal of Sports Rehabilitation. Boudreau is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the South Carolina Athletic Trainers Association. A native of Crestview, Fla., she received her bachelor of science degree from Charleston Southern in 2006 and her master of science degree from the University of Kentucky in 2008.

PHILIP ALLMAN - SPORTS MEDIA CONTACT

Named as a Sports Information Intern for the 2010-2011 year, Philip Allman will serve as the main media contact for Women’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball, as well as serving as a secondary contact for Baseball and Golf. Allman graduated from Carson-Newman College in June of 2008 with a bachelor of arts in art with an emphasis in graphic design. He spent time working in the sports information office during his time at Carson-Newman, working with a wide variety of sports. He currently resides in the North Charleston area.

CONFERENCE AFFILIATION

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in fall 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years. He has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the league as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinctive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified conference membership with the additions of High Point, GardnerWebb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual NCAA National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth year of the Big South’s football existence. The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”, was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the conference’s 25th anniversary. The league also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-08, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-07 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic AllAmericans in its quarter-century of existence.

The University, founded in 1964, is included on the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges and was named one of America’s Best Christian Colleges. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the University’s vision is integrating faith in learning, leading and serving. Charleston Southern has grown from 500 students to more than 3,000 students in its 46 years. Situated on 300 acres, the University is located in the center of the Charleston metropolitan area. Students take advantage of the cultural, historical and recreational opportunities the city offers. eyond the classroom, students can participate in a variety of campus activities, including academic clubs, service organizations, intramural athletics and campus ministries. CSU’s athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Our athletic programs have produced several nationally recognized professional sports figures, including Charlie Simpkins, 1992 Olympic silver medalist; Maurice Price and Josh Breeden, who signed as free agents in the NFL; Bryant Burch, who signed with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders; Crystal Carpenter, who signed with the WNBA’s Utah Starzz; R.J. Swindle, who played for the Charleston Riverdogs as a member of the Yankees organization and became the first CSU player to ever pitch in a MLB game, joining the Phillies; Tyler Thornburg, who was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2010 MLB draft; and Bobby Parnell, who made it to the Majors with the N.Y. Mets. Charleston Southern University is proud to have sent 11 different teams to NCAA competition over the past eight years. The women’s golf team is the most recent to represent the University in NCAA postseason play, winning the conference championship in 2010, while men’s tennis is historically the most consistent, having competed in four NCAA tournaments since 1999. In 2008, CSU sent 12 track athletes to the NCAA Regional meet, and were also represented at the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The University fields teams in basketball, women’s soccer, softball, cross country, baseball, track & field, golf, tennis, and volleyball, as well as an NCAA Division-I football program. In it’s history, CSU has captured 28 Big South Conference championships. In 2009-10, CSU placed more than 40 athletes on the all-conference teams with another four athletes earning all-freshman honors.
