2009

2009 Season Outlook An Era of Renovation

The 2009 season begins an Era of Renovation for the CSU baseball program. This renovation includes a new coaching staff, stadium upgrades and a championship attitude. The new head coach, Stuart Lake, was hired July 15, 2008, making him the ninth head coach in program history, and marking his first head coaching position. Lake quickly formed a staff he believed could help carry the team to the next level of competition; his assistant coaching staff includes Charles Assey, Stan Kowalski, and Anthony Hayes. Hayes and Kowalski, like Lake, are both former CSU baseball players while Assey joined the program from Presbyterian College. Lake was a 1994 graduate of CSU and returns to his alma mater after 13 years of coaching at the high school and college levels. Lake’s ties to the Charleston area go beyond his time at CSU; he has collegiately coached at both the College of Charleston and The Citadel, along with stints at the University of South Carolina and Ole Miss. His record includes five 40+ winning seasons, 6 regional playoffs, 5 super-regional playoffs, and one College World Series appearance. The baseball coaching staff, along with head strength and conditioning coach Toby Jacobi, has worked to install an attitude of championship baseball since Lake’s first day, and the players have responded not only on the field and in workouts but also in the classroom. Not only are the players transforming attitudes and working hard but the coaching staff has been tirelessly working to improve the appearance and appeal of Buccaneer baseball. Coach Lake’s newest addition to the program, Buccaneer Bullpen Club, along with the Building Buccaneer Baseball program, the Buccaneer baseball team is watching their field transform into a stadium. Major renovations started in July and include a new backstop, general admission bleachers, seatbacks for reserved ticket holders, and standing areas. These improvements and expansions bring the total fan capacity to 1,500, making the Buccaneer baseball experience not only more fan friendly but also exciting. Coach Lake has planned a challenging schedule for the Bucs this season as they face several out-of-conference opponents including the University of Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn, Marist and the Bucs’ crosstown rivals The Citadel and the College of Charleston. This season’s Big South Conference match-ups are anticipated to be just as challenging, while the Bucs are hoping to surprise some teams that may underestimate the challenges the Bucs will bring. The Bucs will rely heavily on their nine seniors to be examples for the large group of underclassmen in the program. This season’s senior class includes fielders Kory Morian, Jake Cox, Mark Perry, Keith Hustedt, and Michael Obuchowski, along with pitchers Brandon Roberts, Andrew White, TJ Green, and Eric McGough. While the seniors may have the most experience, other players the Bucs will look to include pitchers Jesse Cadenhead, Anthony Markham, Stew Brase, and Tyler Thronburg. Success depends, however, on all contributing and working hard to reach the goals set forth. Offensively the Bucs will look to be led by returner and 2008 Freshman All-American Derek Smith. Tyler Thornburg, Nick Chinners and Tom Burkett are also counted on to be effective at the plate for the Bucs. Burkett, a sophomore outfielder, will be looked to for his physical strength as he was named the Overall Weightroom Champion in the fall, as well as the Keshel Cup Champion for hitting. Coach Lake believes that the Bucs are developing into a team that can challenge for the Big South Championship but notes that it will take dedication from all players and unselfish habits as they contribute to the effort as a team. Building Buccaneer Baseball is no longer the effort of a few Alumni, but goal the of the entire program.

slugging percentage was 33 points higher than the year before. In addition, the Rebels topped the 600-hit mark with 614 base hits. In the 2005 season, the Rebels continued to improve offensively, producing more than 750 hits, scoring more than 500 runs and driving in 462 runs on the way to claiming the SEC Western Division title, the program’s first in 23 seasons. The Rebels also had six hitters hit over the .300 mark that year. The 2006 season witnessed Ole Miss led the extremely tough SEC in hitting as the Rebels batted at the .309 clip for the year, and four Rebels finished in the top eight in the SEC in total hits for the season. The Ole Miss offense produced more than 700 hits for the second straight season as the Rebels won the SEC Tournament on its way to a second straight NCAA Super Regional.

A 1994 graduate of CSU returns to his alma mater prior to the 2008-09 school year, having spent time at South Carolina, Mississippi, College of Charleston, and his most recent stop, The Citadel. Lake becomes the ninth head baseball coach in school history, and the third CSU/Baptist College graduate to coach the Buccaneers, including Ralph Ciabattari and Jamie Futrell. In Lake’s 13-year coaching career, he has coached more than 75 players who have gone on to play professional baseball with 31 of those being drafted in the first 10 rounds. Seven of those 13 were drafted in the first round. Three of his players have been named SEC Player of the Year and one named Southern Conference Player of the Year. Two of his players have been named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List with one winning that coveted award. Lake has had 10 former athletes reach the Major League, and Lake is one of the few who can ever claim to coach a player that eventually appeared in the Major League All-Star Game, World Series and the Super Bowl. Lake spent the past two years across town as an assistant for The Citadel Baseball program, where he was responsible for coaching the hitters and outfielders and was very involved in recruiting prospective student-athletes. Prior to The Citadel, Lake spent three seasons as an assistant for the Ole Miss Rebels, where he was responsible for the hitters and outfielders. Ole Miss enjoyed three of the school’s most successful seasons in history with 39 wins in 2004, 47 in 2005 and 44 in 2006. The Rebels hosted an NCAA Regional in all three of Lake’s years, as well as two NCAA Super Regionals. The 2005 edition of the Ole Miss ball club won the Southeastern Conference Western Division, and the 2006 team won the SEC Tournament Championship. In Lake’s first year at Ole Miss, the Rebels offense belted 14 more home runs than in the previous year, and the team’s .444

Prior to his stint at Ole Miss, Lake spent one season at the College of Charleston. In his only year with the Cougars, Lake served as third base coach, hitting instructor and outfield coach. Lake began his collegiate coaching career at South Carolina in 1999, where he coached the outfielders, coached first base and assisted with the hitters. During his time at USC, the Gamecocks won three SEC East Division titles, two SEC Championships, played in three NCAA Super Regionals and reached the College World Series Championship Game in 2002. Lake helped two SEC Player of the Year winners during his stint as a Gamecock. One of those players, Kip Bouknight, was also the 2002 Golden Spikes Award Winner. Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Lake coached at Mid Carolina High School (his alma mater) and at Brookland Cayce High School in Columbia. Brookland Cayce won the AAA State Championship in Lake’s second year in 1998. Lake also served as the head coach of the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League in 2000. Lake is married to the former Tracie Smith of Clover, S.C. The couple has one son, Hayden (4).

assistant coach charles assey

Charles Assey was hired as the assistant coach at Charleston Southern on July 21, 2008, coming to CSU from Presbyterian. A 2004 graduate of Presbyterian College, Assey returned to the Blue Hose in the summer of 2007 and was in charge of PC’s field output in the 2008 season. Under Assey’s guidance, PC catchers gunned down more than 30 percent of stolen base attempts, and held a .985 fielding percentage. Offensively, Assey was brought in to help power numbers, which he did, upping the homerun total by 13 over their 2007 campaign. Prior to PC, Assey had a successful stint at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. He served as a graduate assistant baseball coach and as the head strength and conditioning coach during his time at St. Edward’s. During his two years at St. Edward’s, Assey served as

the first base coach and as the assistant recruiting coordinator. He also served as the camp director for former St. Edward’s head baseball coach Jeremy Farber’s baseball camps. Assey coached two outfielders and one catcher at St. Edwards who went on to play either Minor League Baseball or in Independent Professional Baseball. Prior to Assey’s arrival at St. Edwards the program had gone .500 the year before. During his two years the program improved exponentially, winning 35 games in his first year and 36 in his final year. A former Blue Hose team captain who graduated from PC in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies with a minor in Secondary Education, Assey completed his Masters Degree at St. Edward’s in May of 2006. He graduated with an Arts of Human Services degree with a concentration in Sports Management. Assey is also a veteran in the summer baseball camp circuit as he has been an instructor at summer baseball camps at The Citadel, Clemson, South Carolina, Presbyterian College, Lander and the University of Texas. Assey was recruited to play two sports at PC, suiting up for both the football and baseball team. Assey left the football team to concentrate on baseball after his freshman campaign. Assey pitched and played in the field for PC. He was a part of PC’s 2003 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship team. The Blue Hose participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2003. The West Columbia, S.C., native played high school baseball at Brookland-Cayce HS for his father Charlie Assey, who was a four-year starter for the Bucs. Assey was a part of Brookland-Cayce’s 1998 South Carolina 3A state championship team.

and facilities. He spent seven years in that post, while at the same time, starting his own baseball training indoor facility, Pro Level Sports. Kowalski left CSU to devote his full-time energy to his business, which is the only indoor baseball and softball training facility in the Lowcountry. He has trained and coached numerous players from youth age all the way to college and professional pitchers. Stan Kowalski begins his first season as the pitching coach for the Buccaneers this spring and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the young staff.

Kowalski was a teammate of current CSU head coach Stuart Lake and jumped at the chance to join his coaching staff when Lake was hired last summer.

Kowalski knows all about CSU baseball, having played for the Bucs from 1991-95 as a pitcher. Kowalski left the program as the school’s all-time winningest pitcher with 23 career victories and held the record until 2004 when R.J., Swindle surpassed the mark.

“My heart has always been with the Buccaneer program and this is an exciting opportunity to give something back to the University and the program that helped me so much as a student and player,” says Kowalski.

After graduation, Kowalski became the pitching coach for the Fort Dorchester High Patriots in North Charleston for three years before returning to Charleston Southern as assistant athletic director for operations

Stan has lived his entire life in the Lowcountry and is a graduate of Hanahan High School. He is married to the former Brooke Palmer of Honea Path, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Ryland (5) and Cooper (2).

assistant coach anthony hayes “I am excited to have Coach Hayes join our staff,” said Lake. “Not only is he a former player here but is a very knowledgeable coach that will help teach our players. I know Anthony will be a big plus for our program.” Hayes will help the Buccaneers while finishing up his master’s degree, having played two seasons (1996-97) in the Blue and Gold. Hayes started and played in 97 games at CSU, missing the last few games of his junior season with an injury. A transfer from Columbus State Community College, Hayes was a 2004 NJCAA Academic All-American and an all-conference selection. In 2005 he upped his performance, earning Player of the Year honors for his region, and first-team NJCAA All-American honors.

Anthony Hayes will join the staff for the 2009 season. Hayes, who will coach the outfielders, help with the hitters and act as the first base coach, will be the third coach on the staff to return to his alma mater, joining former CSU battery mates Lake and pitching coach Stan Kowalski.

As a coach, Hayes has helped current CSU pitching coach, Stan Kowalski, at Pro Level Sports, serving as a hitting and infield instructor, as well as the third base coach for Pro Level’s 18u AAU team. He has also served as the varsity assistant coach at R.B. Stall High School during the 2008 season.
