Head Coach Shane Winkler
Shane Winkler Head Softball Coach
Butler, 2004 * Fifth year at CSU Shane Winkler enters his fifth season as the head softball coach at Charleston Southern in 2013, and will look to build off a 2012 campaign which ranks as perhaps the best in school history.
Under the guidance of Winkler, CSU established program-bests with 12 Big South wins and 33 overall victories, and came within one win of its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid with a berth in the Big South Tournament Championship Game for the first time since 1988. Along the way, the Bucs defeated the likes of South Carolina and Notre Dame in out-of-conference play and compiled a six-game winning streak which is the longest during Winkler’s tenure. Morgan Dowdy set a single-season CSU record with 165 strikeouts and earned a spot on the Big South’s All-Conference Second Team, as did left fielder Jana Matthews, who smacked six more home runs and led the club with 33 RBI. Megan Lombard also put the finishing touches on a brilliant four-year run under Winkler’s tutelage, as the senior shortstop smoked seven homers and wrapped up her career as CSU’s all-time leader in home runs, RBI, hits, slugging percentage and total bases.
Even before a banner year in 2012, Winkler was instrumental in restoring a winning tradition to the Buccaneer softball program. In 2010, CSU posted its first 30-win season since 1993, setting numerous program records along the way, and the 2011 club tied the program record with 10 Conference victories. Under the direction of Winkler, CSU has had 12 players earn a total of 15 Big South All-Conference Team honors. Additionally, in 2010, senior Caitlin Allen became the first CSU player to be named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In the past four seasons, CSU has garnered four conference player of the week awards and eight pitcher of the week laurels. Coach Winkler’s teams have set or tied numerous CSU records since 2009. A total of 10 individual single-season records and seven career standards have been set during Winkler’s time at Charleston Southern. The Bucs have broken 11 single-season team records in the past four seasons as well. The Buccaneers have won 37 Conference games under Coach Winkler, the most League wins for CSU in any four-year span. In 2011, the Buccaneers posted a 25-33 record, including a 10-8 Big South mark, tying for third in the Conference. CSU set a single-season program record with 269 strikeouts, including a program-best 148 K’s from senior Kimberly Hobbs. The Bucs closed out the regular season with a series victory over Big South Regular Season Champion Radford May 7-8, with Morgan Dowdy pitching back-to-back shutouts May 7. Junior shortstop Megan Lombard was named to the Big South All-Conference First Team, with Erin Kegley, Jessica Brock, Jana Matthews and Stephanie Sbardella earning second team mention.
The 2010 team went 30-28-1, and 8-10 in Big South play. CSU slugged a program-record 45 home runs, shattering the previous record while also setting standards in slugging percentage and total bases. The Bucs earned impressive wins over No. 15 Louisville and a 6-0 victory against Virginia Tech, and took 5-of-6 meetings from College of Charleston. Freshman Jana Matthews earned Big South All-Conference First Team, while teammates Megan Hall, Shayla Cullum and Kristin Kelleher collected second team all-conference.
In his first season at CSU, he led the Bucs to a 26-33 overall record with a 7-11 mark in the Big South. CSU tied for the best start to the conference schedule in program history, jumping out to a 5-1 record. The Bucs also entered the conference postseason as the No. 4 seed, the highest finish since 2001. After a good showing in the Big South Tourney, including a win over No. 2 Winthrop, CSU finished with a 2-2 record in the postseason, one game out of the Championship game. Amy Trenkamp and Jamie Wellons were named first team allconference, while Melissa Adams and Megan Hall were tabbed to the second team.

Head Coach Shane Winkler (Cont.) During the summer of 2009, Winkler was hired as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), which is the only professional softball league in the United States. The Bandits boasted a 27-12 record, the best in the NPF, before being eliminated in the playoffs. Winkler worked with a star-studded roster, complete with several Olympic performers, such as Jenny Finch (Arizona). Hired before the 2008-09 school year, Winkler came to Charleston Southern after three seasons as the assistant coach at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. While at Marshall, Winkler worked mainly with the offense and outfield while assisting with the overall team defense, recruiting, and all administrative duties within the program. During his three seasons the Thundering Herd had a combined record of 91-78. During his time with the Marshall offense, the team broke its homerun record twice, including a combined 52 homeruns in 2008 with an overall team batting average of .288. Winkler had the opportunity to coach four players that continued their softball careers in the NPF. During the summer of 2007, Winkler coached as an associate field manager with the Akron Racers of the NPF. While with the Racers he coached NCAA National Champions Alicia Hollowell (Arizona) and Caitlyn Benyi (UCLA) in addition to many other top softball players from the PAC 10, SEC, and ACC. The Racers finished the 2007 season in 2nd place in the NPF standings earning a trip to Kimberly, Wisconsin, for the league playoffs. Prior to Marshall, Winkler spent one season as the Co-Head Coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois. He inherited a team at DACC that had won 11 games in 2004 and led the program to its first winning season in 12 years by posting a 2825 record in 2005. Winkler began coaching softball while in high school as a volunteer with the Kentland, Indiana, Summer Softball Association. He also spent one season as the hitting coach for South Newton High School in Kentland while attending Purdue in 2002. A 2004 graduate from Butler University, Winkler competed for the Bulldog baseball team after also playing at Purdue University and Illinois Central College.
Winkler played professional minor league baseball in both 2004 and 2006. After graduation from Butler Winkler signed a professional contract with the Florence Freedom of the Independent Frontier League in July 2004 and completed the season with the expansion franchise. In 2006 Winkler signed to play in Amarillo, Texas, with the Amarillo Dillas of the United League before being traded to the Washington Wild Things in Washington, Pennsylvania.

At Mississippi Valley State, Butler assisted with the team’s pitchers, catchers and hitters. In 2011-2012, she helped lead MVSU to the SWAC Conference Championship and a trip to the 2012 NCAA Regionals. Butler assisted with catchers and hitters, during her coaching time with the Gators. The Orlando, Fla., native was a four year starter for the Gators from 2003-2006, capping off her career by being named the 2006 SEC Player of the Year. During her time on the field for the Gators, Butler made a name for herself as a strong-armed catcher, finishing her career on top of many of the career leaderboards at Florida, including runners caught stealing, pickoffs and lowest stolen base percentage by a catcher. Also known for her powerful bat, Butler led the Gators in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage in her senior season, setting the school record for single season home runs with 17 and became only the second player in school history to record more than 50 RBIs in a season with 52. She ended her career ranked in the top 10 in nearly every career batting category. Among her accolades at Florida include: SEC All-Tournament team (2003), SEC Honor Roll (2003-2005), NFCA/ Louisville Slugger Second-Team All-Southeast Region (2005), and NFCA/Louisville Slugger First-Team All-Southeast Region (2006). Immediately following the end of her senior season at Florida in 2006, Butler signed a professional contract with the Akron Racers of the National Professional Fast Pitch League where she started at catcher for the Racers for four years. In 2007, Butler was coached by current CSU Head Coach, Shane Winkler. In the summer of 2007, Butler was invited to the USA National Team Tryouts in Chula Vista, California. From 2009-2010, Butler played overseas in the Japan National League, becoming one of just six Americans to be invited to play in the prestigious league. While in Japan, she started as a catcher, third baseman and designated hitter, setting the Japanese national record with three home runs in one game. From 2010-2011, she competed and played in the PFX Tour. The professional tour, run by former Olympian Dot Richardson, featured players such as current USA Olympian Lisa Fernandez, as well as many All-Americans. Last season Butler signed a contract with NPF Chicago Bandits, where she finished second in the league with seven home runs and 29 RBIs, starting as catcher and designated player. 2013 Softball Season Preview Charleston Southern looks forward to their fifth season under head coach Shane Winkler with the Lady Bucs improving every season as CSU looks to make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament after falling in the Big South Softball Championship game last season. The Lady Bucs finished third in the Big South standings for the third consecutive season in 2012 finishing with a 33-26 record, 12-9 in conference play and look to improve their standings with a tough nonconference slate in the 2013 season with games against teams from 10 different NCAA Division I conferences this season. “We have a veteran team this year I am looking forward to seeing them continue to take this program to new heights. Our ultimate goal is to always reach the NCAA tournament and falling one game short of that goal last season has given this group a great deal of motivation for this upcoming season. We are going to challenge them early with a difficult schedule once again and look forward to them continuing to improve as we reach Big South play.” Charleston Southern’s schedule features 24 Big South games, 10 games against the Southern Conference, five against the Southeastern Conference and four against the Colonial. The Lady Bucs will also take on opponents from the Colonial, Mid-Eastern Atlantic, Horizon, Pacific Coast, Pacific 12 and Metro Atlantic conferences during the season. Winkler enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Lady Buccaneers after guiding the program to arguably their best season in school history. CSU established program bests with 12 Big South wins and 33 overall victories, coming within one win of its first NCAA Tournament bid after making it to the Big South Championship Game for the first time since 1988. In 2012, Charleston Southern defeated high-profile opponents South Carolina and Notre Dame, while pitcher Morgan Dowdy set a single-season CSU record with 165 strikeouts in earning a spot on the Big South’s All-Conference Second Team. Left fielder Jana Matthews also earned All-Conference honors after finishing the year with six home runs and a team-high 33 RBIs. Season Outlook Six seniors headline this year’s group of 15 returners that set a program record with 12 conference wins last season as the Lady Bucs recorded the season sweep over Winthrop, as well as conference series wins over Liberty and Campbell. The Lady Bucs were picked second in the 2013 Preseason Big South Softball Coaches Poll, receiving two first place votes and 69 points in the annual preseason poll one year after finishing as the 2012 Big South Tournament runner-up behind reigning Big South Champion Coastal Carolina. “The exciting thing about the preseason poll is that it means the season is right around the corner,” commented Winkler on the poll results. “We are right where we expected to be based on the finish to last season, but the Big South is so balanced that anyone can beat anyone from 1 through 9.” Pitching/Catching With returning senior and workhouse Morgan Dowdy out for the season due to injury, the Lady Bucs will rely on senior Linzy Rother, sophomore Jennifer Giles and junior Hayes Holdsworth inside the circle this season to hold off the opposing offenses.
Giles finished ninth in the Big South in earned run average with a 2.71 ERA in her freshman year at Charleston Southern, compiling a 9-10 record on the mound in 24 appearances. She accumulated 90.1 innings inside the circle for the Lady Bucs, turning in several of her top performances in Big South play, making 10 appearances and four starts with a 5-2 record in recording victories over Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian, Liberty, as well as both wins by CSU over Campbell in the 2012 season.
Rother transferred in from North Carolina State last season, making 12 appearances and five starts on the season, throwing two complete games and one shutout in 43.2 innings pitched

on the year. She made three appearances in the conference, accumulating a 2.33 earned run average, pitching nine innings, including five shutout innings against Campbell in combining with Giles for a 1-0 shutout win over the Camels.
Holdsworth did not see action on the mound in the 2012 season, but saw action on the mound in three games in her freshman season, pitching in conference play against Longwood and Radford.
“Losing Morgan is obviously difficult, but we have seen Jen Giles grow up a great deal in a short period of time and look forward to her being one of the best pitchers in the Big South this season after having a solid freshman campaign. Linzy Rother has also continued to improve and her experience gives us a veteran presence in the circle will be big for us. Hayes Holdsworth will also see some time in the circle and the way she has improved leading into the season could put her in a position to see some significant time for us. Our pitching has been a strong point of our program in recent years and I believe that will once again be the case this season.”
In the battle to see time behind the plate include senior Melanie Stickney, junior Ari Tedesco and sophomore MK Parnell and newcomer Marci Christian. Stickney appeared in 47 games with 33 starts at the backstop, throwing out 14 potential base-stealers on the season from behind the plate and recorded three pickoffs. Under her guidance, the Lady Bucs pitching staff recorded a 2.46 ERA, second best in the Big South for the 2012 season. Tedesco also saw time behind the plate, often splitting doubleheaders with Stickney in receiving 25 starts in the backstop. She appeared in 48 games overall, compiling a five-game hitting streak near the end of the regular season and 10 hits in the last 12 games and was known for her clutch play down the stretch with laying down a drag bunt to drive home the tying run in the Lady Bucs eventual 4-3 victory over Radford on May 6th. Parnell also received time behind the plate in the 2012 season making her first collegiate appearance against Hampton last February. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native recorded a hit in her first Big South at-bat, driving in a single against Gardner-Webb. Christian enters the crowded battle for playing time behind the plate after transferring to the Lady Bucs from Longwood University where she appeared in 34 games, earning 29 starts for the Lancers as a sophomore. An Arvonia, Va., native, the junior catcher finished the season with three doubles, one triple and five home runs in 74 at-bats and will provide a powerful right-handed bat to the lineup for Winkler. Around the Bases Seniors Trea Steele and Linzy Rother, junior Stephanie Sbardella and sophomore Hannah Wagner return to man the infield for Winkler this season, while Stickney and freshman Natalie Yonan will also see time on the dirt for the Lady Bucs. Steele returns for her fourth season at second base for the Lady Bucs, having appeared in 149 games with 139 starts for the Lady Bucs. She’s coming off a junior season which saw her hit four doubles during the season and finished the year with only three errors in 94 chances on the field. Rother spent most of her time at first base for the Lady Bucs when she wasn’t on the mound and returns as the team’s leading hitter, finishing the year with a .294 batting average with nine doubles and four home runs, finishing second on the team with 24 runs batted in. She tied the CSU single game record with seven RBI in a game and had five RBI with a three-run home run in the doubleheader sweep over crosstown rival College of Charleston. In Big South play, she also delivered a key two-run double in the first inning of CSU’s 8-0 Big South tournament semifinal win over Gardner-Webb.

2013 Softball Season Preview (Cont.) Sbardella returns as the most accomplished hitter in the Lady Bucs’ lineup as the junior third baseman hit .290 in her sophomore season, finishing with 49 hits, 15 for extra bases, including seven doubles and tied for the team lead with seven home runs. She also added 24 RBI and 18 runs scored from her position at the hot corner, coming up with key home runs against Furman, Hampton, Wisconsin, Winthrop and Liberty in CSU’s Big South tournament run. Wagner split time at first base and catcher last season, starting 25 games from the right side of the infield as the sophomore earned her first start as a true freshman at the season opener against Furman last year. She shined at the plate in several games, including a 3-for-3 performance with a triple, home run and five RBI against Hampton and led the team on the field with 201 putouts, finishing the season with a .986 fielding percentage. Yonan enters the infield rotation as a true freshman as the Susanville, Calif., native comes to the program holding most of the career records at Lassen High School. During her career with the Grizzlies, she was named to the All-League team in each of her four seasons on the diamond and holds school records for the most wins, most hits, most plate appearances, most runs scored, most defensive attempts and putouts in her career. She’ll likely split time with Stickney at shortstop during the season. Covering the Outfield With the loss of Kristin Kelleher and Melissa Adams to graduation, the Lady Bucs will see some new faces among the returners in the outfield this season, led by seniors Jasmine Conley, Jana Matthews and Courtney Konyk. Matthews returns after earning a spot on the Big South All-Conference Second Team in her junior season, leading the Lady Bucs with 51 hits and 33 RBI, finishing second on the team with six home runs, while racking up a .422 slugging percentage. She also finished second on the team with 26 runs scored and sits two home runs away from Megan Lombard’s Lady Bucs career home run mark entering her senior season. Konyk appeared in 53 games for the Lady Bucs, starting 13 times in right field and three more in center, tying for the Big South lead with four triples on the season in only 52 at-bats. She reached base 16 times, recording 13 hits and three walks, while scoring 12 runs. She also came up with timely hits in CSU wins in the Big South tournament with key triples against Liberty and Gardner-Webb. Conley spent most of her time on the bases for the Lady Bucs last season, appearing in 35 games mainly as a pinch runner where the speedster from Morganton, N.C., stole two bases, scoring eight times on the season. Her thefts came against Ohio and Liberty in the Big South tournament opener, and she also added an RBI single in the series win against Campbell. The senior trio will be joined in the outfield by Tedesco, juniors Lizzy Olmstead and Holdsworth.
12
Olmstead started three games as a sophomore among her 34 appearances on the field, recording a single in CSU’s win over Ohio and scored 10 runs on the season. She also showed adept feeling on the basepaths, stealing four bags on the year to rank second on the team in the category.
Holdsworth appeared in 45 games on the season, mainly as the first pinch hitter off the bench for the Lady Bucs, coming through with the game-winning three-run double against Notre Dame this past March, and she went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the sweep over College of Charleston. She looks to reprise her role for the Lady Bucs in the 2013 season.
“Jana Matthews has been a mainstay in our outfield since the day she arrived on campus and we look for her to put up her best season yet. Center field and right field are still up for grabs and we have a lot of great competition going on for those spots. Lizzy Olmstead, Hayes Holdsworth, Courtney Konyk, Jasmine Conley and Ari Tedesco are all poised to have breakout seasons for us this year.”

Kyle, Radford University Vice President Dr. Frank Bonner, Gardner-Webb University Secretary Dr. Anne Ponder, UNC Asheville
The Big South Conference took a big step in its young history in the Fall of 2002 when, for the first time in its 19-year history, the League crowned a football champion. Football had always been a long range goal of the Conference. In the early 1990s, football seemed on the horizon in the Big South, as Charleston Southern fielded its first team in 1991 and the Conference added Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, football never got off the ground in the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awarded its first automatic bid to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketball began to flourish.
The idea was revived in 1997 when Elon joined the Big South. That gave the Coordinator of Football Officials Conference three full-time members with Doug Rhoads football programs -- half the number needed to be recognized as a Conference by the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. Full-Time Member Institutions (11): Campbell University, Charleston Southern 10, 1999, Coastal Carolina University announced it would add football by the University, Coastal Carolina University, Fall of 2003. Conference failed, the Big South began recruiting more members to join its fledgling football league. On May 23, 2001, the dream became a reality when the Big South’s Council of Chief Executive Officers voted unanimously to add football Championship Sports (19): Baseball, Men’s as the Conference’s 18th championship sport. It became the first sport added since Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s 1997 when men’s and women’s indoor Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, track were incorporated as championship Football, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Men’s sports. Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Indoor and Shortly after the approval of football, the Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Indoor Big South’s recruiting efforts paid off, as the and Outdoor Track & Field, Volleyball, addition of Gardner-Webb University as an Women’s Lacrosse (2012-13) associate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that with the addition of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a four-team League could begin play later Associate Members: Stony Brook University (football), Bucknell University (women’s golf), College of the Holy Cross (women’s golf).
that Fall, with Coastal Carolina coming into the fold in the 2003 season. However, scheduling conflicts could not be worked out, so the Fall of 2002 was designated as the kick-off to Big South Football. The Big South continued to look for additional members, with a goal of eventually having seven or eight playing members. On Dec. 10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state of Virginia -- Virginia Military Institute, announced it would join the Big South in all sports in 2003 and maintain the Conference’s football membership at five following Elon’s departure. In 2006, the League moved one step closer to etching its status as a viable football Conference. First, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director Warren Koegel was appointed to the FCS Football Selection Committee, the Big South’s first-ever representative on a national football committee. On April 6, the Big South added Presbyterian College as its sixth football member. Presbyterian, now in the final year of its transition to Division I, officially joined the Big South in all sports in 2008. On May 26, 2006, the Big South announced that associate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008, solidifying the Big South’s football make-up for years to come. With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign. League champion Coastal Carolina became the first football member to advance to the postseason when the Chanticleers received an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Big South took another step closer to becoming eligible for an automatic berth when on March 20, 2007, the Conference announced the addition of Stony Brook University as an associate football member beginning in 2008. All the efforts came to fruition in the spring of 2008 when the NCAA announced the expansion of the FCS Playoffs from 16 to 20 teams beginning in

The Big South Conference 2010 and granting the Big South an automatic bid starting that year. The growth of Big South football has been exceptional since its inception just nine years ago. The Big South experienced its most successful campaign in 2006 with Coastal Carolina’s FCS playoff berth; two teams (Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern) ranked in the national Top 25 in the same week for the first time; four appearances on the ESPN family of networks; and the first-ever NFL Draft pick and first finalist for the Walter Payton Award in Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen. In 2007, Liberty won the first of its four consecutive Big South football championships in record-breaking fashion just two years after finishing 1-10 overall; Coastal’s Jerome Simpson (second round) and Gardner-Webb’s Brian Johnston (seventh round) were selected in the NFL Draft, and the League’s five football members combined to average a Big South-record 7,488 fans per game. The Big South produced another nationally-ranked program in 2008 in Liberty, as well as its fourth NFL draft pick in three years – Liberty’s Rashad Jennings (seventh round).
on the same day, when Gardner-Webb won in overtime at Akron and Liberty defeated Ball State on the road on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the season, Stony Brook extended its football membership through the 2015 campaign. Individually, Liberty’s Mike Brown led the nation in total offense while Stony Brook was the only FCS team to have two 1,000-yard rushers in Miguel Maysonet and Brock Jackolski. Coastal Carolina emerged from a three-way tie for first-place with the Big South’s first-ever automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs. The Chanticleers also became the first Conference member to host a football playoff game as Coastal faced Western Illinois in the first round at Brooks Stadium. The Conference also had its largest television package to date, as a record eight League games were broadcast while Big South football members appeared on TV 12 of the 13 weeks of the season. With an automatic playoff berth officially awarded to its annual champion, the Big South is poised to continue its ascension as a national competitor in FCS football with an eye on advancing in the postseason and capturing the ultimate goal – a national championship.
The 2010 season saw the Big South make noise around the country early in the season with two wins over FBS opponents
