DAW DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is a software used for editing, recording and mixing music and producing audio files. DAW software includes apple logic, cube base and cakewalk these are some examples of DAW software. The reason we have this software is because it allows us to edit, improve and change the audio which allows the final product to be a professional standard. Without this type of software the audio would be unorganised and the quality would be poor because you wouldn’t be able to edit out any unwanted noise like white noise and vibrations. Moving on DAW software is more practical than a mixing desk is because you are unable to save your work which makes it unreliable and you could argue that the mixing desk is more complicated than the DAW software because of the wide range of buttons. Also DAW software takes up less room up because it is downloaded onto the computer and it is a lot cheaper than a mixing board because the mixing board cost around £2000 were the DAW software cost £200.

Mixing desk A Mixing desk is part of the sound equipment. It is a console where sound signals are mixed during recording or broadcasting it includes a microphone. It is used to changing the quality and the level of audio signal. It also include microphones being used by singers and for picking up acoustic instruments, signals from electric or electronic instruments, or recorded music. The most popular mixing desk is sound craft EPM8 8-channel Mixer which cost around £160 which is the cheaper mixing desk. The feature includes fading, headphones slot, speaks with good audio quality. The advantage of the mixing desk is that it is simple to use also it can be quite affordable. However it can be difficult to set up if you don’t know what you’re doing. The mixing desk is very pacific which means it has highly effective out comes. This is perfect for song editing and has far better control over frequencies, bussing pitch and reverb. However this is very expensive. Also this is not made for lip syncing because it doesn’t have visual guidance. Which means you need an ear for it

Cut Cut is an editing tool on the software like logic. It normally looks like scissors and it you to cut up the text so instead of being one big chunk it can be many small chunks. It also you do cut and delete any long pause, awkward silences or any white noise. It stops sound being wasted and makes the audio flow a lot better. However if you want to get it spot on so you don’t have a long pause or any extra sound you have to zoom in on a 100th of a second which can become quite hard to do.

Join The join tool allows you to join any separate audio to become one long audio. It will mean no silence and will allow the audio to flow better. It also makes it easier for the editor because it means you can move on long audio instead of moving lots of little ones.

Cut and paste Copy and paste allows you to copy the audio then paste it .It is done so you can delete the sound you don’t need and paste the sound you do need. You copy by pressing command C. Cut and paste is also a tool on logic and the best hard drive to use of logic is a mac because it is more efficient however the mac is more expensive.

Stereo Field The stereo field consists of placement from left to right and front to back. When you mix a song, you can set your instruments wherever you want them on the “stage that's created by your listeners' speakers. This is usually achieved by using two or more independent audio channels through a configuration of two or more loudspeakers in such a way as to create the impression of sound heard from various directions, as in natural hearing. It is when you put different music together to form one long piece of music. However this software can be complicated and difficult to use if not done correctly it can mess up your work.

Mono Mono is a signal sound. Mono audio is an accessibility feature that makes sure, even if you're hard of hearing or deaf in one ear, you never miss a word, note, or sound when listening to your iPhone or iPad with a headset on. Mono uses one, stereo uses more than one. In monaural sound one single channel is used. Mono uses one, stereo uses more than one. In monaural sound one single channel is used. It can be reproduced through several speakers, but all speakers are still reproducing the same copy of the signal. A monophonic will sound the same anywhere you stand as it is a continues sound. Do this will be perfect for a band because they have different speakers for different instruments.

Naming tracks and clips This is an editing process which allows the editor to know what track is what and so the track doesn’t get lost. They do it so you can easily find the track. The clips might get loss or mistaken for something else. It might be messy and unorganized. For example, a Novices wouldn’t follow this procedure because they wouldn’t name their tracks because they are unorganised as they would probably only have two tracks. As an hobbyist will follow this procedures as they do this in their spare time so they would take this more seriously. However a professional would follow this procedure as they would label it as date and place it in alphabetical order. They would also colour code. They would also have different tracks per studio.

Stereo Sound that is directed through two or more speakers so that it seems to surround the listener and to come from more than one source; stereophonic sound. Stereo recording is a technique involving the use of two microphones to simultaneously record one instrument. Usually, it is cheaper than other media, it can be aimed at a narrow audience and can reach people within this audience wherever you go. The stereophonic creates a sense of space. A small enclose space will have a stereo speacker because it has even sound throughout.

Soundbite A soundbite is a short extract from a recorded interview or speech, chosen for its succinctness or concision. It is often used to promote or exemplify the full length piece. It is a short extract of sound/ audio used. It is a brief catchy saying used in adverts, radio television etc.

Fader A fade is a gradual increase or decrease in the level of an audio signal. Each channel has its own fader (slider) to adjust the volume of the channel's signal before it is sent to the next stage (subgroup or master mix). It allows us to control the volume. It is normally used in radio station to make the show flow smoothly and it you talk over the song and it just allows the audio flow a lot better. Also on an on screen fader control a professional editor will normalise all the clips so that they are equal before they enter a master timeline. Then consistent control can take place. For example they would use this in a film they would do this to character so they would sound the same through out the film.

Automation Automation allows the console to remember the audio engineer's adjustment of faders during the post-production editing process. Automation curves are displayed as coloured curves and points on top of audio and MIDI regions across the track, running the length of the project. It shows the automation curve you want to work on, and choose between track-based and region-based automation. This helps with fading and the advantages to this is it fades out any unwanted sound however this can be quite difficult to master.

Colour Coding Clips The reason we colour code clips is so we can see the different layers for each one. The helps the editor to be organised and helps them to know what clip is what. It makes the job a lot easier and it’s a lot helpful. A novices wouldn’t colour code clips because they wouldn’t know how to and also they would only have a small amount of clips. A hobbyist would just colour code clips and a professional would colour and name the clips as it would be easier for them to identify the clip and will help make the procedure a lot quicker. If you don’t colour code clips it will make the procedure a lot longer and difficult for the editor.

Clipping

Unit 24 Task 2 Name: Lara Young Clipping is a tool in logic. Signal clipping occurs when the volume of a track or bus becomes too loud, which results in distortion. This tool helps make the audio flow better however this procedure is difficult to do.

EQ EQ is the levels of frequency response of an audio signal or controls which allows them to adjustments. It is used to alter the frequency response or an audio system using linear filters. Helps your audio sound better and correct problem when recording. The reason professional use this is to help frequencies. This will help get ride of white noise. However this can be quite complicate to use and sometimes doesn’t get rid of the noise.

Review recorded material before using it It allows us to see the problem with the audio and any other issues. It could lose the company money and the artist could get a bad reputation or their career. If the audio is bad no one will want to buy the product and this will lead to no sells. The different types of people that review their product are a novice they wouldn’t follow this procedure and wouldn’t listen with fresh ears this will be problematic as it means they didn’t know the quality of their product. Then a hobbyist would review it until their happy. Then a professional will review the product until their happy then get the client to review it until their happy so the final product will be perfect. If you choice to ignore this procedure then it can have a negative effect on your product. It is also important to pre record. A novices would plan they would just improvise and record it once in an non sound prof room and using their phone. Well a hobbyist would produce a script and would add keys but wouldn’t pay a professional voice actor to do the voices. Were as professional would do all of those procedures including hiring a voice actor as it would help make the product more professional.

Naming tracks and clips The reason we name tracks so we know what track is what and so the track doesn’t get lost or mixed up. It also means the editor can easily find the track. If you don’t do this the clips might get loss or mistaken for something else. If you don’t do this the tracks might be messy and unorganized. This process can be long in the short term but does save you time in the long run.

The benefits of using keyboard shortcuts in comparison to mouse By Using Keyboard instead of mouse saves a lot of time, it helps to type faster and accurate. Instead of moving mouse from one place to another, just use single keyboard shortcut. If it isn’t done probably you could lose your work and not know how to get it back. On macs these can be customised as it may be easier on a mac than on a pc to use the keyboard short cut. The keyboard shortcut is more effective on programs such as logic as it is a lot quicker. However it can be difficult to learn as there is many different short cuts. A perffwsional editor will use this procedure.

Repositioning the order of different segments of audio This is done because it makes the audio sound a lot better. It allows the creator to reorder and arrange their audio segments into an order that they know and are familiar with. The benefits of this are arranging the audio segments would allow the final piece to make sense when heard back. The effect is it improves how the final piece sound. However if this is not done properly and the audio is in different places it can make the final product disoriented. A novices will not fade sound in and out of each other. They may place tracks in a tenth of a second which means they cant get into much detail. Where as a hobbyist will fade sound and follow this procedure. They will control the levels of particular tracks and will place tracks to a 100 th of a second. Were as professional will do the same as a professional but to be more accurate will get a professional lip sinker to repositioning and merging sound files as it will become a more professional standard and will be perfect for the client. Alos they might employ a arrhythmia software because if not done probably it can make the lip sync look of and ruin the whole of the audio.

Dragging clips into timeline for readiness This is used so the clips are in the right place and so the audio flows a lot better. It can allow overlapping of the clips to speed up the tracks. For this a novices would place tracks in time order and using a singular tracks. Then a hobbyist will use multiple tracks and name their tracks. Where as a professional will put the clips in the correct order as will help make the audio flow. Also colour code it to make it easier for the and put the tracks in different programs to help them create tracks. The reason they will do this is because it gives them more of a Varity and they will choice what the best one for their client.

Insertion of spaces in-between dialogue This is an editing process that puts spaces in the between dialogue this could create a dramatic effect. For this a use of breathing spaces in editing speech, pause to replicate true essence of sounds. A professional to help elevate to an extent by doing this they will need to overlap syllables and words which would take place for lip syncing editing within the media artefact hence the recording the editing flow. This need multiply recording will be required. If the media products was of a slow speaker it would take less recordings of the voice actor speaking slowly and a greater time of editing
