This is a good example of shorthand communicate with the use of the universal indicator being dull and dark to reflect the situation which seems to a sad and depressing mood with the two ladies weeping by the cross which indicates loss as it appears for them to be grieving. The sky is dull and is filled with clouds which is stopping the light from entering which conveys a loss of hope because it reflects the situation that the two woman are in as it reflects their mood of being upset and the see no light at the end of the tunnel. Also the dark colours represent death as the overall theme to his photo is loss and death. There are also religious universal indicators with the cross this is symbolises Christianity and how Jesus died for our sins. This could represent death because it appears to be over a grave as for protection and it reflect their religion. The cross is the most dominate art of the photo as it could symbolise that religion is the most important part of their life and they are turning to it for guidance.

The cross could also link to mise en scene as it is used to create meaning which is faith is the strongest part of most people life and how people turn to their faith in the darkest times.

It denotations of the cross connotes Christianity and it reflects their faith and how they are turned to it in the darkest times. However, the children in the background juxtaposed the two women as they are playing and laughing which is a complete opposite to the two woman. This is the only positive symbol in this photo because it reflects the innocents and purity of children as they can find light in the darkest

times. The exterior location is outside which appear to fit the situation of being dull and depressing. This also links with the connotations and denotations because the denotation is black and white which connotes death and misery.

In this image it juxtaposes the other image as the other image connotes pain and suffering because of the universal symbols of the cross and the location. however the location of this image is Paris which the universal indicator is love and happiness. The two silhouettes are close together but aren’t the main focus is the man leaping in front of them this could be used to symbolises what the couple are feeling for each other and could leap for joy. This symbol represents the joy in the couple relationship. Moreover the distance between the couple is symbol represents how close they are. The non verbal communication is very loving unlike the other photo. The black and white image was manipulated in Photoshop the universal symbol is the dull colour which juxtaposes with the atmosphere and it helps emphasis the relation as being loving and caring.

This image has also been manipulated in photoshop with the use of the back and white image which is used to juxtapose the atmosphere which is positive.

Mise en scene This Adidas advert is an interesting use of mise en scene because there is a lot going on but everything in this image creates meaning.

The use of costumes is interesting because the modal is clothed with Adidas clothing.

The reason for this is because it fits the theme of the advert which is health and fitness and Adidas whole purpose is to encourage people to get fit. Also it is promoting the clothes so it will interest the target audience (which is 16 years plus who are interested in health and fitness) because it the clothing looks comfortable and is easy to move in, which will help increase sells because it looks stylish and comfortable. The reason the editors has chosen this clothing is because it is part of the Adidas clothing brand and it also fits the text because the modal is wearing all running clothing and she is also running this helps promotes the idea that these clothes are made for running as she looks effortless and comfortable in the clothes. The setting is outside in a the street, the reason this is set outside is to reflect the fact that you can do this anywhere and anytime and the product is particle and is easy to adapt. Furthermore, the setting is quite dull and boring which juxtaposes the outfit.

The reason for this is that the outfit is the focus on the poster. This also links with short hand communication because the universal indicator is the colour pink and this poster is a stereotyping because the woman is wearing pink which connotes femininity. Moving on, the non verbal communication seems to be relaxed but determined also the use of the long shot allows us to see the modal and how comfortably and easy she is moving in the outfit. Also the use of the modal being an athletic slender woman sell

the audience not just a product but a lifestyle because it is suggesting if you wear our cloths you will have this figure.

This first choice advert is very interesting use of mise en scene much like the adidas the use of costume is interesting as the modal is barely clothed. This is an example of sexualising woman to increase sales. However the clothing fits the theme of the advert and location which is fun and relaxation. The use of location will help sell the product because the camera frame is the an long shot shot to get the whole of the background in and the modal body language which is joyful and relaxed .

The location is very bright and blue it looks as though the modal is in a paradise. The reason it is in this location is to create a relaxing and it reflects that the company will provide a heavenly setting for the customer. This is similar to the adidas advert because it is also an establishing shot so the audience can see what products are being sold. However in this theme the main focus is the surrounding to help sell the location to the target audience which is 20 years old plus. However unlike the adidas advert this advert main focus is the location because this is what they are selling. The text is not the main focus as the main focus is the location. It has the company logo which is an audience familiarity so the audience can straight away identify the company. The text in the left corner “all inclusive. Two little words. one great feeling” this short yet effective use of the text sums ups what the company is selling to the audience which is an all-inclusive holiday.

The use of the colour is yellow the reason they have manipulated the colour yellow because it connotes a positivity and it remains the audience the audience of the sun.

Anchoring This is an interesting news article because the headline “OUTRAGE” is the anchoring because the headline is one of the main focus point. This anchors in the audience because it is a short yet affective headline because there is no other context it will interest the reader because it has an element of mystery because of the headline. The purpose of the the photos is too add a sense of realism which will anchor in the audience. Another purpose of this photo is to reflect the situation and the loss because of the bottom right photo show the reaction of the people affective.

This is an interesting photo to use because it allows the audience to sympathies with the people effective and it creates a overall negative tone. This also links to short hand communication because the use of the colours of the grey clouds connotes death and destruction and the audience can straight away see the theme of the paper which is loss and pain. The sub heading “Thousands dead, a nation staggered as terrorists strike New York, Washington” this heading instantly anchors in the audience because “terrorist” connotes fear and aggression.

This subheading allows the audience a better insight of what has happened and where it has happened. The shot that has been used is an establishing shot because allows us to see the whole of the damage and the loss that has been caused.

This is an interesting newspaper article because the main focus of the this article is the big bold headline “terror bombs explode across London” this anchors in the audience as is takes up the majority of the page. This anchors in the audience because it uses “Terror” which straight away tell the audience the situation. However in the other article the main focus was the image which helped tell the story of what happened which was an establishing so we could see the full extent of the cause. However in the this image it is a two person shot which reflects the terror of the situation because we can clearly see the terror which brings the situation to life and adds emotional. The reason the photographer has used a two shot so the audience can see some of the surrounding area but the main focus is on the pedestrian to covey the chaos that this attack has caused. In this article there is not much text it is mainly images this is also to anchor in the audience because large text might put off the audience. Also the article is summarised with short yet affective bullet points in the bottom this anchors in the audience because this technique allows the audience to know what’s going on in as much little detail which will anchor them in to read more.

Overall the first newspaper article is more effective because it used more technical terms throughout like having both the establishing shot and the close of the people running. Also, the use of layout was a lot clearer. The image in the other was a lot better as it was taken landscape and it was digitally manipulated in photoshop as it is a lot clearer and you can see what has happened. However the image in this article doesn’t really tell you what has happened you have to read it to understand it.

Denotation/connotation Firstly, the denotation is quite dull and dark colours this connotes a sense of hopelessness due to the lack of colour and the sky is covered by thick grey clouds stopping any sunlight from getting in. furthermore the dark colours symbolise death and destruction because the colours connote a deadly and negative image. The exterior location is a very derelict and seems to be the urban area before the bombing it connotes a sense of chaos and instability due to the rubble and smoke everywhere. Even the building that are standing are rundown and damage.

Also, the lack of people connotes the poverty and chaos in the area because it is somewhere unfit and too dangerous to live. The chaotic scenes connote war and conflict due to the absence of people and the amount of damage and destruction caused. Also, the denotation of the gloominess of the image connotes depression because there is no bright or uplifting colours.

The denotation of the lighting in this image is very dark and gloomy but it mostly focuses on the rubble to connote the damaged that has been caused by the bombing and to reflect the loss and the danger of this war zone area. The denotation is the standing buildings are out of focus compared to the rubble to connote the damage that the bombs have caused. The story that this photo tells us that war can destroy people life’s causing them to abound the place they use to live. Also the damage the bombs can cause on an area. The optional read is (the way the photographer wants us to view it) is destruction and loss because of the use of colours. This also links with short hand because the universal indicators is dull which connotes depression and loss which is the running theme of this image.

This is an interesting use of photography. Firstly the denotation like the other image is quite dull colours which has a denotation of depression and dullness however unlike the other image the theme seems to be love and togetherness. The denotation of the man expression and the way is holding the dog connotes love and protection as he Is holding the dog close the man. the frame that this has been taken in is along shot frame the reason this frame has been taken is so we can see both the modals and the surrounding area. The focus is the dog which connotes a comedic element because he has been zoomed in and is in the middle of the photo.

The reason the photographer has done this is because the dog adds a humours approach because of the wind blowing his hair to one side and is looking down at the camera. This brings a light hearted approach to the image because of the use of camera allowing the dog to be the main focus. the surrounding area seems to be manipulated using Photoshop as it is quite hard to see because it is white and not much texture compared to the man and the dog the reason the photographer has done this is to make the dog the main focus. moving on the denotation is the lady in the background she connotes distance because she has the back to the camera and is far away from the man and his dog which could reflect the relationship the man and woman has that they have a frosty relation and the location can also

Visual language

This is also a example of visual language because much like the other image it uses rule of third. The reason the photographer used the rule of third to create a dramatic effect because of the different layers like the first layer is the dry grass which help adds texture then the dead tree which connotes a sense of loneliness as there is no life on the tree and it is by itself. The nect layer is the mountain then the final layer is the dark sky. This image overall is very dull and is deprived of colour.

The only colour in this is the dead grass which adds texture to the image this signifies how rural the location is. the photographer purposely mad the tree the main focus because the focus is sharp and has been manipulated on photoshop to enhance the texture and the shadow.

The tree represents how deserted this location is and how everything in this image is dead.

This is a complete opposite to the other image as the other image is full of colour. The lack of colour especially in the sky makes the viewer almost miss the sky as it is not a main focus point it is almost been blurred our this create a negative tone due to the lack of life and colour .

This photo is a good use of visual language as it uses the rule of third.

The reason this photographer uses the rule of third to create a dramatic because of the different layers of the colours and different textures help build the story. For example, the signifier is the sky the bright colours make the sky the most dominant part of the picture and with the use of the bright colours. The use of the sunrise signifies new beginning and hope because it is a start of a new day. The colour is also signifies warmth positivity because this images theme is positivity but it also has a theme distance because of the use of the hot air balloon as it is not the dominate picture and the audience doesn’t focus on the hot air balloon first as the sunrise id the most dominate feature. This also links with events photography because this photo is used to change behaviour and spread awareness of global warming because this image is very shocking. Moving on another reason this is a good exterior shot because it has a number of uncontrolled variables like the weather is used to create meaning like the rain has connotations of sadness and depression which creates a sense of vulnerability because the lady in the picture is vulnerable. The reason the photographer has chosen to do this in a urban area is to show the audience that global warming can effect anyone at anytime.

This is an interesting exterior location shot because unlike the other image this is a birds eye view of a village which makes the village appear small and vulnerable to the audience. This image has a lot more colour than the first image but one side has ore shadow than the other which could give the image a sinister feel to it. this image isn’t as interesting as the other because this image weather is a normal day where as the other image had a harsh weather condition and the focus was the girl struggling. However this image does have interesting parts like the use of the shadows.

Also in this image almost everything is symmetrical which connotes perfection because everything is in order which juxtapose the other image as it is chaotic.
