Smuggled U.S. Passenger, Don’t Pick Up Stran
by: Terry Bridge A Southwest Ontario trucker and the American passenger he smuggled across the border during the pandemic - a case a federal prosecutor called "unusual" - have both been released from the jail in Sarnia after a month behind bars. Andrew Blackmore, a 39-yearold long-haul trucker from Woodstock, met an American man online earlier this year and planned to pick him up near the LouisianaTexas border during one of his runs, a Sarnia courtroom heard. Christopher Ramirez, a 33-yearold resident of Albuquerque, N.M., climbed aboard. Ramirez initially told Blackmore he had his passport as they headed north. "But when they entered Michigan, Mr. Ramirez disclosed to him
that his passport had been seized by ... the New Mexico police," Blackmore's lawyer, Robert McFadden, said. "He didn't have one and this scheme to hide him in the cab was cooked up." Ramirez hid in the bunk of the truck as they crossed the Ambassador Bridge. The scheme worked - for three days. Woodstock police were called around 2 a.m. on Aug. 13 about a disturbance at a motel. " The two were having what appeared to be a domestic dispute," prosecutor Michael Robb said. Ramirez, who wanted to go home, told one of the officers what happened. "He spilled the beans, so to speak," McFadden said.
Trucker released from Jail ngers Over the Road Woodstock police contacted the Canada Border Services Agency about the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act violation. Agents went to the motel and arrested Ramirez while police told Blackmore to stay in his truck. The agency considered Ramirez inadmissible to Canada due to prior convictions for smuggling heroin in the U.S. he served a four-year prison sentence - and outstanding charges in New Mexico. "That fact would have also made Mr. Ramirez inadmissible," Robb said. Blackmore turned himself in a couple of days later when charges against him surfaced. Both men pleaded guilty from the Sarnia jail late last month to Customs Act and Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
charges and received one month in jail. But Robb called the case "unusual" and pointed out his office reached an agreement with Mc-Fadden on 30 days behind bars for Blackmore before the Public Prosecution Service of Canada reviewed the case and suggested around six months. "Could've been a much heavier penalty for Mr. Blackmore than what is being recommended," Robb said. "This was a very serious matter." Ramirez, also a commercial driver, will be taken back to the U.S.

PFM International - Proud of our People By Dave MacKenzie
Many companies have key phrases that they believe tells all readers what they are about. Sometimes they are true and sometimes they are not. At PFM, we truly are Proud of our People! From drivers, to dispatch, to office staff and management, all put 110% into the job and do it well. PFM was founded in 1998 by Sheldon and Mark Koslovsky. They grew rapidly from 1 truck and 2 trailers to over 30 trucks and 35 trailers because of their philosophy of making their company a family orientated business. The trucking industry is likely one of the most legislated industries out there. As a carrier, there is no way around all the red tape, rules are rules and they must be followed. However, as an employer, we can make this experience an easier one on the driver, with a mandate to ensure that the driver has a good pay cheque each and every payday.
We at PFM have succeeded in making a business plan that is both successful for the staff, management and most of all for the Driver and Owner Operators. Over the years, we have grown our business with technology and continue to improve our working experience and improved results to our customers. Recently we have implemented a training program for newer drivers. PFM is a premium refrigerated carrier, our lanes are specific. We have chosen to service Western Canada to the TX corridor and the Carolinas. Our customers and our drivers appreciate working with a well-established solution provider managed by very experienced people. Just like any new advertiser we at CTM like to check them out by me (Dave) taking a ride in thier truck and doing a full tour on the road. PFM passed in spades,, as one of the Best Trucking Companies I have had the pleasure to turn a wheel with. Come check them out!

By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking
The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has announced Leigh Foxall as its September Member of the Month. Foxall is the founder and CEO of Truck Parking Reservations and a 30-year veteran of the trucking industry.
She has experience leading large and small businesses into and through tremendous growth phases. It is said she has diesel in her blood. After moving to Portland, Oregon in 1986, Foxall began working for the Jubitz family at Dial-A-Truck/DAT Solutions. The Dial-A-Truck offices were housed in “the brown broker building” at the far corner of the Jubitz Truck Stop parking lot. Trucks parked within inches of the building and the only way to get to the Ponderosa for lunch was to walk through the fuel island. There and then is where the diesel got into her blood. Foxall has worked side-by-side with several successful technology pioneers in the transportation industry. Al Jubitz, who recognized a pain point
16
for shippers and brokers looking for truck drivers to move their loads, and Scott Moscrip, who starting his company by employing his family and their friends to build what is now Truckstop.com, are a few of them. After spending over 20 years with these colleagues, it is no surprise that Foxall started building Truck Parking Reservations. The solution allows a driver the ability to search for safe and secure reserved truck parking. Just ask an over-the-road truck driver how long it takes to find truck parking in or around a major city, or if they can find a spot after 6pm, and you’ll see there is a truck parking crisis. In fact, over the past few years, American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) studies have shown truck parking as a top critical issue for truck drivers. “The pandemic has caused an even greater truck parking crisis for the trucking industry. Due to the lockdown, property owners in major cities with safe and secure overnight parking are no longer able to serve the trucking industry with much needed available, reserved truck parking spaces,” said Foxall. Working for technology companies has been Foxall’s full-time career path, but her passion for WIT runs deep. For six years, she served as chairwoman on the board of directors. She also helped staff the WIT trade show booths, attended conferences, and was always there to support and encourage Ellen Voie, WIT president and CEO, while she was building the association. “I will never forget the first ‘Salute to Women Behind the Wheel’ event with WIT. When the doors opened, we had no idea what to expect. Female drivers, their families, and supporters streamed in through the doors for what seemed like 30 minutes,” said Foxall. “Some women had tears running down their face as they thanked us for honoring them. It was an amazing day and I am fortunate to have built relationships with women who too have diesel in their blood.” To find out more about Truck Parking Reservations visit truckparkingreservations.com Women In Trucking Association, Inc. is a nonprofit association established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as 17 percent of its members are men who support the mission. Follow WIT on Twitter, Facebook, or

Rescue dogs and lost pets who need a ride home have a new group of allies in Canada: truck drivers. A group based in Thunder Bay, Ont., will help coordinate rides for animals who are heading from one part of the country to another. Furry Hobos and Hiway Heroes is the creation of Margaret Foster. A former truck driver, she took it upon herself to help coordinate rides for those with four legs. "It actually gives them something they feel good about. I mean, you go up and down the road here, you see the accidents and everything else that happens," said Foster. She said nearly 300 dogs have been transported through the group to their new homes, anywhere in Canada. She said some trucks in the United States are also now part of her 'network', allowing

for international movement of the animals in need. Foster said drivers are not compensated, but she asks for a donation of home baking, or a gift card for coffee. Help from the community Foster said many of the drivers have their own animals in their trucks, that they refer to as 'An Ambassador.' The one ambassador cat of the group, named Turtle, recently got out of a truck in Granby, QC. Foster said she's overwhelmed, as it seems the whole community wants to find the cat. She said the Ambassador animals are a key part of the program. "The dogs are so relaxed, they introduce them before they come into the truck." " They show them the bunk, like 'this is where we can lay and

sleep' and it just keeps them really really calm and collected. And, they enjoy it." As for continuing to help ferry rescue animals, or those who are lost and found to their proper homes, Foster said most drivers can't get enough of it. "[One driver], he gets a hold of me all the time and says, 'Margaret, I'm getting tired of laughing at my own jokes, you'd better give me a dog.'" Visit on FaceBook; Furry Hobos N Hiway Hero"s. MyDenny’s App Adds Value for Frequent Diners
It's all about you. Your preferences, your tastes, your cravings. It's your Denny's, so why not have it all? Make Denny's yours with MyDenny's, the only app that earns you perks with every bite you take. Denny’s Restaurants has been a staple of Canadian dining for the last 45 years, providing classic diner fare, an inviting atmosphere, and great value for all their guests. With 59 locations across the country, many located along major transit routes, Denny’s is a dining staple for drivers, providing a bit of comfort and familiarity when away from home. Denny’s has always placed a high importance on being a good value, but with their recently relaunched Loyalty Program they have found a way to make dining an even better deal, especially for their loyal customers. With a simple download from Google Play or the App store, the free MyDenny’s mobile app allows guests to earn points for every purchase at participating stores. Every purchase also earns a stamp on their digital loyalty card. Once the card has been filled in, members earn a special $5 reward coupon and a new card is started automatically. One of the big questions about the app, has been how hard is it to get enough points to get the rewards? Well the answer is it’s easy, and there are lots of added incentives to sign up! New members automatically get 50 points for registering and there are opportunities to earn bonus points by completing polls on the app and entering promo codes that are posted on social media or emailed to their members. It doesn’t take long to earn enough points to redeem for rewards such discounts on purchases or free food and beverages. Every week Denny’s is giving away one thousand points to a new member, so there is an added incentive to sign up. With over 45,000 members and growing quickly, the app is proving to be highly successful for both Denny’s and their customers. One of the cool new upgrades to the app is the ability to scan a QR code on the bottom of each receipt, making it quick and easy to add the points to your account. Members can also use the app to send invitations to meet up with friends and share points back and forth with other members. For the non-smartphone users, there is a desktop version of the loyalty program available at www.mydennys.ca providing all the perks, promotions, and contests available through the app. If you are a Blackberry user, you can use the mobile web version on your phone’s Internet browser, also at mydennys.ca.
