The Importance of Safety Inspections !

In the Transportation Industry we have all been told about the importance of conducting our safety inspections pre trip and post trip. These safety inspections are mandatory for both our driver logs for the MTO and DOT requirements as well as those of us who are part of the C-TPAT, FAST, PIP and CSA Programs. But, are we all actually doing this every single day prior to every single load that we do? Somewhere I think that the importance for safety has been lost. The amount of truck tires coming loose from the truck bodies whilst driving has increased from 2010 and in fact just last year in 2015 there were 127 incidents of these detached wheels just in Ontario With the new Operation Wheel Check that was launched in ON in December 2015, the requirements are getting more strict and to enforce this action the fines are getting steeper ranging from $2,000 for minor infraction to $50,000 for wheel separation.

10

Daily inspections are an absolute liability law by the MTO and requires companies to do specific specialized training for the technicians that are involved in the wheel installations.

Recently an innocent passenger vehicle driving along the highway 400 near King City, ON, January 27, 2015, 9:20 AM, was struck by two flying loose commercial truck tires. The gentleman driving that vehicle was killed when the two tires hit the windshield shattering it to bits and collapsing the roof of his vehicle. Unfortunately the truck driver, carrying a load of lumber, continued for 2 km before stopping to realize what had just happened.

The 69-year-old, Paul Koenderman, from Burlington, ON, former CEO of Aecon Group Inc., was air lifted to a Toronto hospital where he died from his injuries sustained when the two 200 lb. truck tires came loose from the commercial truck body and hit his GMC Yukon. Ministry enforcement with onroad inspections by specially trained police officers has become the norm and their eyes are peeled for those operators failing to do their proper inspections. Just since December 2015 there have been 1,800 trucks and 10,000 wheels inspected by the ministry. Cutting corners for truck safety inspections seems like a time saving idea when one is in a hurry to make a shipment as time is money in our JIT era, however, we must remember that lives are far more important here than monetary gains, after all, what are we working for everyday? Money to support our lives and our families; think about everyone else’s families out there that we could potentially be putting in danger by not performing our daily pre trip and post trip inspections properly. It shouldn’t have to take someone’s life to remind us of how important these safety inspections truly are.

The trucking company involved in this unfortunate accident stated that their last inspection on this truck was done January 22 and that their standard practice is to only inspect the trucks once per week; according to MTO standards, you must inspect your truck Daily for safety of the vehicle including it’s tires. Please conduct your daily safety inspections and help save lives.

Note from Dave! If you see suspicious activity, persons asking you for a ride across the border in your vehicle, a loose lipped driver talking about smuggling loads of weapons or drugs, do us all a big favour and contact authorities. Try to get as much information as possible without becoming involved and shut these bad guys down. They are bad for our business. CALL BORDER WATCH~

By; Ellen Voie CAE, President/CEO Women in Trucking

(TDC).

Women In Trucking Association (WIT) announces Peggy McCullah as its February Member of the Month. Peggy is a professional driver for Transportation Distribution Company

Over ten years ago, Peggy was a machinist, not a truck driver. However, circumstances gave her an opportunity to attend truck driving school. When she made the decision to become a truck driver, many told her she would have a hard time finding a job because she was a woman. In fact, she received discouragement from some men in the industry that this was not a woman’s place. Peggy kept going after her goal. When she received her license, she was actually sought after because she was a woman. And most men in the industry were gentleman who had a lot of respect for her. Skill has a lot to do with that respect. Peggy recalls a time she needed to park at a nearby truck stop. She called out on the CB and asked if there were any parking spaces available. With some laughing, she was told there was one spot left in the back. When she arrived, she understood why it was open because it was a tough space to fit in. Since backing wasn’t a problem for Peggy, she backed straight in. The audience of three men and one woman told her “Men were trying all day to back in there and couldn’t do it and here a lady comes in and put its right in the hole.” The backing story makes Peggy proud of her skill, but knows that it can be challenging for other women who don’t have prior experience as she did. That is why she takes extra time while training other women so they can master it as she has. Because, out here it doesn’t matter on gender, it is how you operate the equipment. Peggy is thrilled to see so many other women out on the road now. When she first started ten years ago, she would go several days without seeing a woman in the driver’s seat; now she sees up to five in one day! She does her share of spreading the word too. When she goes into truck stops, other females have talked to her about getting into

14

the business. She tells them about companies that take good care of females and some that help with schooling. As a woman in the industry for over ten years and over one million safe driving miles, she has some advice for other female drivers. For example, she never takes the same walking path to and from the truck stop. And if she has to park far away from the front, she will pull up front under the lights to do her pre-trip check. Peggy is married and has one daughter and three grandchildren. She is a solo driver and her husband owns his own business. They all love that she is a truck driver and are extremely proud of her. Her friends and relatives keep updated with her new adventures on Facebook. Read Peggy’s full story at: http://womenintrucking.org/peggy-mccullah/

Women In Trucking Association, Inc. is a nonprofit association established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. FIRST CLASS TRAINING CENTRE STARTING OR ON THE JOB

FCTC HAS THE PROGRAM FOR YOU

Since opening our doors in January 2012, First Class Training Centre Inc. has been providing the highest standard of training to our clients in a personal relaxed learning environment. From the beginning we recognized there was a need for a high quality Class 1 driver training program preparing the students for a promising career ahead of them. Becoming a professional truck driver takes years of experience. Any truck driving school can teach you how to drive a truck, but at First Class Training Centre we are interested in teaching you how to get industry ready. All aspects of the job are covered in the training. We don’t limit our instruction to the things that will help you get your licence; we want to help individuals to go out and get a job. We’ll do this by sharing the kind of insight that can only be earned by spending years doing the job, and helping you prepare for a career in the industry, not just a road test.

20

All of our instructors at First Class are career veteran truck drivers. These instructors have combined on-the-road trucking experience that exceeds two centuries! That’s a lot of experience teaching the students. Our instructors will give you the training you will need to take on the challenges of the transportation industry. Demand for our high standard of training and unique perspective on the trucking industry has been fuelling our growth, and we now have eight instructors on staff in Winnipeg and one in our new Brandon location. As well as training locally, we have also done out of town projects as far north as Thompson, Manitoba, but the down fall to out of town training was to find a suitable location for a classroom and transporting our airboard to do proper air-brake training. That’s when my partner, Jeff Esslinger and I, decided to custom build a mobile classroom for training that we can bring almost anywhere in Manitoba.

This 48 foot trailer has a classroom with 8 air-ride truck seat for the students, a fully functional tractor trailer air board system and a state of the art driving simulator. Our passion at First Class is not just developing new drivers for the industry but we have a passion for the trucking industry as a whole. We invite trucking firms to take advantage of our mobile training unit to refresh or enhance their drivers with the use of the driving simulator. We will book and bring the trailer and instructor right to your work place almost anywhere in Manitoba for as many days as needed so you are able to assess your drivers. With the driving simulator, First Class can develop a company specific curriculum to suit the organizations particular needs, including complete orientation programs for newly hired drivers.

It seems like yesterday but 40 years ago Jack Shields and his 3 sons (Clarence, Jim & John) started their first restaurant an A&W, in a small northern town called Fort McMurray. At that time there were less then 5,000 people living in that community. From there they expanded to include the Fort’s first Smitty’s Pancake House & Diary Queen franchises, the Garden Cafe, Willies and Oriellys & the Stags Head Inn. As Fort McMuuray continued to grow so did the Shields family business. In 1986 after the introduction of the Liberal National Energy Program the family lost all their business and were forced to start all over again. Some 25 years ago Jack and Clarence started all over again by operating a restaurant located the Nisku Truck Stop. From there they continued to grow acquiring the Airways Country Inn and numerous other business interests. Brother Jim and his wife Jody ventured off to start a successful greenhouse operation, while John continued on with an award winning career in radio. Blackjacks Roadhouse and Games Room is a brand new building been created to host Clarence’s latest vision, this outstanding and beautiful building features amazing truss work and a 2nd floor grand stage over- looking our room. They boast the best buffet in the area, as well as a great Canadian & Chinese cuisine menu. Our games room is furnished with 25 V.L.T.s, 5 Minute Keno, Sports Select. Watch and play all the sports from our comfortable lounge. Trucker Friendly Please come by anytime and enjoy our menu and great service. Open 24 hours a day featuring specials daily. Spend some time wandering around looking at one of the largest collection of oilfield, trucking and car racing memorabilia dating back some 100 + years.
